Learning does not stop.
When the mind gets
1. Look-out
Identify what you want to learn and the
competencies you will target in your on the
job learning.
You can do this based on your competency
gap analysis , your career management plan
and discussions with your manager, coach or
mentor. Also, think about the time frame, i.e.
the amount of time you have to learn.
Understand the proficiency level you need to
target within the specific competency areas.
This will help you understand how deep your
learning needs to be.
Finally, document your on the job learning
objectives so you can refer to them later.
2. Explore
It is a good idea to gather as much
information as you can about how to do the
job.
Do this by talking to an experienced person,
reading up about the task or even observing
someone perform the task.
This step is particularly important when the
task is complex, sensitive or has safety
protocols that must be followed for your and
others safety.
Document the information so you can refer to
it later if necessary.
3. Acquire
A support system enables you to lean back
on as you start your on the job learning and
get feedback and advice.
This is best established before you start.
Support systems can include reference
books and job aids, people and
organizations.
Books and job aids typically provide
information and steps to carry out the task.
People can include subject matter experts
and others who are experienced at the task.
They may also include your manager, coach
or mentor who can guide you and give you
feedback.
Organizations can include industry bodies
or network groups that specialize in
information and resources on specific
topics and areas.
4. Race
It goes without saying that at some stage
you actually have to race the task.
Pay special attention to the nature of the
task or job before you start it. If What you
are about to do is complicated, may have
an adverse outcome if not done properly, is
sensitive in nature or has safety protocols
that must be followed then it is best to
have your support person with you as you
attempt the task for the first time. If
something goes wrong or you need
immediate feedback then you will have
someone close to you that can help you.

5. Neutralize
As you go through your on the job
learning, neutralize all the negatives that
you discover through the work
environment and people. Introspect:
How has it gone so far?
What went right?
What went wrong?
What did you learn?
What could you have done better?
What will you do differently next time?
It is a good idea to use this opportunity to
talk to someone like your manager and get
their perspective on your performance.
Keep a journal or notebook with you as
you go through your on the job learning.
Use it to keep track of your progress.
Make it a habit of jotting down your
thoughts regularly - preferably daily or at
least once a week.
What may appear as important at a
particular point in time may be difficult to
remember later if you do not record it.
This will also help you refresh your
memory if you are going back to the task
after some time and you do not have your
instructor or subject matter expert close to
you for advice.
7. Nurture
You will find that there are usually many
ways of doing the same task unless it is so
complex or hazardous that there is just
one prescribed method.
If there is flexibility in how you do the task
then over a period of time you will have
established your way of doing it.
If a process or way of doing the task did
not exist in the first place then it is best to
document how you do it and establish a
standard. This is sometimes known as an
SOP or Standard Operating Procedure.
If you can, nurture an SOP for your task.
8. Go-share
Once you have completed your on the job
learning and done the same task a few
times it is time to review it and look for
areas of improvement. Consult your
journal or notebook when you do this and
you may find some opportunities for
improvement as you review your notes.
This is an important step in your
development which will help you become
more effective in your job.
It is useful to also reflect on the way you
went about your on the job learning.
Sharing your learning is always better to
consolidate your learning.
PROFESSIONALS
LEARNING
to be a
SMART
Person
They make smart decisions.
Smart people know their actions have consequences. They
also know that they have to earn business results one
decision at a time. In other words, a few smart calls won’t
make you omnipotent. Consistently making good decisions
takes discipline and focus.
They learn from their mistakes.
From our first steps to our last, we learn everything in life
by trial and error. We all make mistakes because that’s how
we learn. Smart people learn from theirs. After all, if you
don’t face reality and judge yourself honestly, you’ll never
do better next time.
They don’t have all the answers.
There’s an old saying, “Those of you who think you know
everything are annoying to those of us who do.” It’s a funny
line but if you say it in earnest, that’s pretty annoying.
Smart people don’t need to constantly reinforce the fact by
acting like know-it-alls. They’re smart enough to know how
much they don’t know.
They surround themselves with smart people.
No man is an island. Individuals may be smart but small
teams do the best work. Steve Jobs may have been a
control freak, but he made sure the eight or nine people on
his leadership team were the most talented he could find
and taught them to do the same with their teams. That’s
smart.
PROFESSIONALS
9
They are resourceful.
Since human intelligence is an evolutionary
advantage -- we didn’t evolve an enormous
neocortex for no reason – intelligent people
are generally more adaptable and creative in
the way they make use of their surroundings
to achieve results.
They can reason.
I will never get this as long as I live: Even
when presented with irrefutable evidence
that they’re wrong, many people will
consistently hold their ground as if their life
depended on it. Without critical thinking,
logical reasoning, causality, and the scientific
method, we’d still be living in the dark ages.
They don’t follow fads.
We live in the golden age of fads and
pseudoscience. Frankly, nothing speaks
louder to the dumbing down of society that
was portrayed so accurately in Mike Judge’s
futuristic spoof Idiocracy. Urban Dictionary
calls it a "movie that was originally a comedy,
but became a documentary.” Truth.
They don’t live beyond their means.
Don’t get me wrong, we all stretch ourselves
somewhat when we’re young. But once
you’ve achieved something you don’t want to
lose, it’s not very bright to squander it
needlessly by living beyond your means.
They’re often their own worst enemy.
As developed as our frontal lobes are,
everyone has at least one emotional blind
spot that haunts them. Oftentimes that’s just
the flipside of whatever it is that makes them
smart to begin with. Like yin and yang, they
need each other to coexist.
Family business
Mentoring by Rajiv
Khurana
Family ventures in India serve as the backbone of
the economy. Name any field of business or social
initiative, and families in India would have played a
pivotal role.
Family businesses have their own unique style and
culture which keep evolving over the time. Market
opportunities have been expanding globally;
technology has been helping in the need and speed
of delivery and the social and family milieu has
created new dimensions in control and decisionmaking
power-centres, besides the newer
generation aspiring for new avenues or seeking a
higher and faster stake in the enterprise.
Complexities have been rising and so has the
commitment to succeed.
Globally, businesses are seeking professional
MENTORS for advice, strength and support. In
India, highly aware families have followed suit.
Some are gearing up, while a large number still live
in the comfortable bliss of ignorance.
You too can easily reach out to a MENTOR
if you identify your family business with any of
these illustrative needs:
