When you pay Zak\h (alms), you have done your duty<br />
as is obligatory. But a person who amasses unlawful wealth<br />
and <strong>the</strong>n makes gifts to <strong>the</strong> poor from it will have no<br />
spiritual reward for doing so. On <strong>the</strong> contrary,<br />
he will carry <strong>the</strong> burden <strong>of</strong> it with him into <strong>the</strong> next world.<br />

All\h has made <strong>the</strong> Muslims duty-bound to pay Zak\h (alms).<br />
It will be taken from <strong>the</strong> wealthy to be distributed among <strong>the</strong> needy.<br />

ON THE AUTHORITY OF `ABDULL¬H IBN 'ABB¬S.<br />

The owner <strong>of</strong> any land which is irrigated by rain water or<br />
a stream, or which is situated close to a river, is obliged to give<br />
one tenth <strong>of</strong> its produce to <strong>the</strong> needy. The owner <strong>of</strong> such<br />
land as is irrigated by o<strong>the</strong>r methods will pay half this amount.<br />

A person to whom God has given wealth but does not<br />
give Zak\h (alms) from it will find on <strong>the</strong> Day <strong>of</strong> Judgement<br />
that his wealth will turn into a poisonous serpent with two<br />
black spots on its head. It will wind itself like a yoke around<br />
