1 Version 1:8
INTRODUCTION
For whom is this document written?
It is written to resource and empower an individual (not necessarily a pastor
or a leader) in a local church who has a passion for evangelism or who would
like to themselves and their church develop the passion.
• You may or may not have “the gift of evangelism.”
• You may not even be doing any evangelism yourself but you recognise that
the primary responsibility of every believer and every church is to actively,
regularly, and personally contribute to the evangelisation of the world (i.e.
reaching lost people with the message of the gospel). To read about why
the evangelisation of the world is the priority, please click here.
• You have observed that mention of this responsibility receives little
attention in the life of your church. It might even be nonexistent. Before God, you don’t have peace about
this and you feel you can’t let this situation continue unchallenged.
• You want to make a positive, strategic, and crucial difference in the life of your church.
• The Holy Spirit is stirring deep within you to take action and become part of the solution.
If what I have described resonates with you, thank God!
Doesn’t sound like you?
If this is not you, but you know of a person who fits the description, please - give them this document.
They are in every church...
We believe there are people in every local church who fit the description I have given at the top of this page.
Why? Because we know that every true believer is in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). The Holy Spirit
never sleeps in His desire to motivate and empower the believer in whom He dwells to evangelise (Acts 1:8).
This is the very reason He was given.
Working together...
Our challenge is to find these incredibly precious people who want to flow with the Spirit’s prompting. We
want to envision, resource, coach, and empower them so the Holy Spirit can work through them to help
mobilise all the people in their church for evangelism. As a ministry, God has given us a passion to work
with Christians who want to see a resurgence of the Great Commission across the world, starting with their
own church.
Becoming an ETL...
If what I have written here resonates with you, we want you to make contact with us. We’ll show you how
you can become an “Evangelism Team Leader” in your church or “ETL” for short. An ETL is someone
who wants to be used by God to resurrect evangelism in their church for the sake of His Name. Eventually,
others in your church will gather around you and join in, hence the word “team” in the title. You are going
to be working closely with your pastor, so you’ll need to take this document to them and get their support
and approval for what you are wanting to do. What you are wanting
to do is entirely biblical, so expect the full support, buy-in, and
encouragement of your pastor. This Evangelism Team Leader’s Guide
was put together to resource and empower ETLs and their pastors.
Being able to get where you want to go...
This ETL guide which you are reading now is like a road map to show
you how to get from where you are now to the point where 100% of
the people in your church are mobilised.
This might seem like an impossibility, but we are working with
churches right now who are slowly but surely making this dream a
reality. This guide will explain exactly how they are doing it.
2 Version 1:8
HOW TO BECOME AN
ETL.
Are you a potential ETL? Please
read the descriptions and study the
flow diagrams below. They refer to
the three different types of people
who are sitting in every local
church who could be potential
ETL’s.
1. THE SMOLDERING EMBER
You are a person sitting in a
local church like a smoldering
ember. The desire in your
heart is to evangelise and
see others in your church
evangelising. You may or may
not have the Ephesians 4:11-
15 “gift” of evangelism. The
point is you have a passion for
evangelism and deep down you
know it’s extremely important.
You feel God’s call on your life
and it’s powerful. It worries
you that so few around you
share the burden you have to
evangelise the world.
You will also probably feel
alone and isolated because
very few people in your church
appear to share your passion
for evangelism. You have not
read Julian Batchelor’s book
on evangelism, or attended
an Evangelism Strategies
International (ESI) “Change
The DNA Of Your Church” one
day conference.
Reading this ETL guide is
pretty much the first contact
you have had with ESI.
2. A SMOLDERING EMBER
WHO HAS HAD CONTACT
WITH ESI
You are a smoldering ember
who has started to take some
action and do something about
what’s stirring within your
spirit.
Batchelor’s book “Evangelism: Strategies from Heaven In the War for Souls.”
After this exposure your passion and vision to mobilise everyone in your church has been heightened but
you don’t know where to start.
The people in your church don’t share your passion and excitement for evangelism so you feel “stuck” and
in need of some help.
You too probably feel isolated and alone, like a prophet in the wilderness.
3. THE DORMANT
You are a person who is sitting in a local church who is actually an Ephesians 4:11-15 evangelist but you
just haven’t been awakened to the fact. Or maybe you once have exercised your gift but you have since
neglected it and you feel it’s in hibernation mode. i.e. You have the gift, but it’s lying dormant within you.
All you need is for your passion for evangelism to be sparked into life. This will happen through the grace
and power of the Holy Spirit when you are exposed to the teaching on evangelism which ESI offers.
Over and over, we have watched the Holy Spirit ignite people for evangelism through reading Julian’s
book, attending a one day conference, or sitting in on the ESI sermon series on Sunday mornings -
exposure leads to ignition.
So, if you are wondering where all the evangelists have gone, this is your explanation. They are sitting in
your church. Think of the people in your church as matches and the evangelist as the matchbox. Bring
the two together under the empowering work of the Holy Spirit and enjoy the fire!
“What’s important to realise is that
igniting church-wide passion and zeal
for evangelism doesn’t just happen. The
Holy Spirit delights to work through a true
Ephesians 4:11-15 evangelist to effect this
end. So find an evangelist like this, and
find a church which wants to be ignited
into evangelism. Bring the two together
and watch the Holy Spirit light the fire!”
No matter which of the three potential ETLs you are, what’s important is that you realise that you are a
vital part of God’s plan to redeem the world. That stirring you feel within you is God’s call on your life.
Don’t despise it. Go with it. Fan the ember until it becomes a flame (2 Timothy 1:6). Take action.
How do you do that? For a start, and as the flow diagram shows, we urge you to read Julian Batchelor’s
book and attend a one day conference, or listen to the content of the conference for 4-5 Sunday mornings
during an evangelism series at your own church or someone else’s church.
You can even get some of the chapters of Julian’s book free as PDF files. You can also watch some of
the videos of the conference free on line. To make a start, contact Julian at: julian@esisite.com or
GETTING YOUR PASTOR’S APPROVAL
An ETL is someone who is approved by their pastor so you need to get a tick from them.
Your pastor is the key to your success as an ETL. You won’t get far in mobilising 100% of
the people in your church for evangelism unless you have the complete buy-in of your
leadership. You and your whole leadership team at your church are going to need to work
closely together for the sake of the Great Commission.
OK, now we are done with the Introduction, let’s see what’s in the Evangelism Team Leader’s Guide.
6 Version 1:8
WHY TRY AND MOBILISE 100%?
The original mission’s mandate of Jesus was to evangelise the whole world, using 100% of the Church to do it.
So the goal of 100% mobilisation is simply obedience to the express command of Jesus.
This was His ‘Plan A’ for growing His Church.
It’s since been called THE GREAT COMMISSION.
The Early Church Christians obeyed Jesus and they reached the known world with the gospel.
And what happened? The Church exploded with growth.
The history of what happened is recorded in Acts.
The point is that the Early Church proved that 100% mobilisation was possible.
Why were they so committed to evangelising the world and using everyone to do it?
They had heard Jesus tell them audibly and personally it was the priority.
Today, only 2% of Christians engage in evangelism.
The bald and truthful reality is that 98% of us are now living in wilful disobedience to Jesus’ priority and His
expressed command.
We’ve drifted a long way from the original mandate.
It’s to this mandate and His command to evangelise the world that we must return.
We are therefore calling all leaders to lead their churches back to
obedience to the original mandate of Jesus which is to mobilise
100% of their people to participate personally and regularly in the
evangelisation of the world.
“No Modern Church Growth Strategy Will
Ever Be Better Than The Original”
The evangelisation of the world doesn’t just happen, and nor does the mobilisation of everyone in your church.
There needs to be a vision for it at a leadership level, strategies, coaching, and resources.
This ETL guide you are reading is your “how to” and “where to find” document.
It will show you how to mobilise 100% of the people in your church to participate regularly and personally in
the Great Commission.
Why settle for anything but 100% mobilisation? Anything less is compromise.
3 KEY TERMS IN THIS ETL GUIDE
THE GOAL
The goal of an ETL is to work with his/her leadership to
mobilise 100% of the people in their church to be active in
evangelism, proclaiming or spreading the gospel at least once
a week.
THE ESI ONE YEAR PLAN.
8 Version 1:8
THE MANDATE IS BIBLICAL
It Is God’s plan to mobilise 100% of people in every church to evangelise. Who says so?
“It is the duty of the Church, and that means the duty of every
Christian, to tell the story of the good news of Jesus to those who
have never heard it.”
Dr William Barclay. The Gospel Of Mark. Saint Andrew Press,
1975, p.370
“The supreme purpose of every true Christian Church, the chief
duty of every Christian minister, the main responsibility of every
Christian layman, is to present to all who may be reached in the
clearest and most forceful way, the basic facts of the Gospel of
Christ, and to urge all who hear to make the definite personal
response to these facts which God requires. To this, the supreme
task, every other duty and activity of the church, must be
secondary and subsidiary.”
Derek Prince. Foundation series, volume 1.
Sovereign World Books. 1986. p145
“There is not room for evasion by trying to limit the commission
of Jesus to the apostles or to any subsequent section of the Church.
Acts 1:8 is clear: ‘You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; you shall be My witnesses 1 …’ We can only restrict
the command to witness if we equally restrict the promise of
power. The gift of the Spirit and the call to be witnesses belong
together and apply indiscriminately to all Christians. All
Christians may inherit the promise; all must obey the command.”
Dr John Stott. Motives and Methods In Evangelism. IVP, 1973, p.5
“The biggest difference between the New Testament Church and
our own,” he says, “is that every member was a witness.
The responsibility of bearing witness to Jesus rested fairly and
squarely upon every single member.”
Dr Michael Green. Evangelism Now And Then. IVP, 1979, p.118
1 [Editorial: there is much confusion about what ‘to witness’ means today. It means to
proclaim or spread the gospel. It does not mean engaging in social action, not mowing
one’s lawns on Sunday, or not smoking etc]
9 Version 1:8
The Evangelism Team Leader’s Job Description (Etl)
An evangelism team leader (ETL ) is a person who works alongside their church leader
to help bring their church back to the original
mandate of Jesus which is the mobilisation of
everyone for evangelism.
“God’s Plan ‘A’ Is For
A Local Church Leader
And An In-House Evangelist
To Work Closely Together
To Grow The Church”
(Ephesians 4:11-15)
The words “church leader” will be used throughout
this guide to describe the many titles they have
such as pastor, minister etc.
It will be through the ETL’s guidance, help, prayers,
motivation, love, and commitment that the number
of people mobilised in your church for evangelism
will grow over time. As the number of those
mobilised increases, so your church will grow.
“ It will be through the ETL’s guidance, help,
prayers, motivation, love, and commitment
that the number of people mobilised in your
church for evangelism will grow over time.”
10 Version 1:8
HOW WILL THE CHURCH GROW?
THIS IS HOW IT IS:
There are currently 17 churches in New Zealand who have started on
a journey to achieve THE GOAL. They are all at various stages. Your
church could be the next to begin the journey!
So how will achieving THE GOAL grow your church?
Good question. Your pastor will want to know the answer. He/she
wants growth, which is an entirely God-given desire.
An ETL, THE ESI ONE YEAR PLAN, and this ETL GUIDE are key
components of a plan to grow churches.
HOW THE PLAN WORKS:
Every church which begins this journey towards THE GOAL will start with a very small
group of people who are interested in evangelism - expect around 2% to start with.
This 2% group (your Eteam) led by you the Evangelism Team Leader (ETL), will start
proclaiming or spreading the gospel.
Non-Christians who hear the gospel through your Eteam will react in one of three ways:
1. NOT OPEN: The gospel is proclaimed, and both parties (i.e. the Christian and the
non-Christian) are polite and gracious with each other. At the end, the non-Christian confesses that
if they died tonight they would go to hell. This doesn’t concern them, and they don’t want to go any
further. The Christian and the non-Christian shake hands, and the event is brought to a pleasant and
polite close (20%).
2. OPEN: The same as in (1) above, except they are concerned to find out they are going to hell. However,
they don’t want to go any further- just yet. They want time to think and process what they have
just heard and are not ready to come to church - just yet (50%).
3. RESPONSIVE: They are interested. They are concerned to find out that if they died tonight they
would go to hell. They have lots of questions, and want to go further. They respond positively to an
invitation to come to church (30%).
RESEARCH FINDINGS:
Our research shows that if 10 people in a church of 100 are regularly active in
evangelism, this group of 10 will bring, on average, 2 people a week to church on
any given Sunday i.e. the collective effort of 10 people results in 2 non-Christians
coming to church on a Sunday morning (or being brought to your home/life
groups so they can build relationships before coming to a church service on
Sunday). That’s a 20% strike rate - or 104 non-Christians per year.
Now, take your church of 100 and project forward to the point where everyone is
active in evangelism. Remember, this is THE GOAL. What, for example, would
Sunday morning look like when THE GOAL is reached?
You’d have 120 people in church, 20 of whom would be complete non-Christians. In a year, that’s 1040
non-Christians visiting your church. Imagine if only 10% of these were saved and assimilated into the life
of the church. Your church will have doubled in the first year. If a church of 100 can double in a year by
mobilising 100% of it’s people to proclaim or spread the gospel, then total mobilisation of a church is the
golden key to church growth. Are there other keys? Yes, there are many. One to note here is
11 Version 1:8
Sunday mornings services. They become critically
important.
HOW SUNDAY SERVICES WOULD NEED TO
CHANGE:
With so many non-Christians visiting your church on
Sunday mornings, the focus would probably be a lot different from what it is now. How so?
The Sunday service would need to be geared towards catering to the needs of those 20 unsaved non-
Christians.
You might only get one chance with these 20, so you don’t want to blow it.
Literally every aspect of church on Sunday morning would be carefully scripted and planned to cater for
this group:
• The welcome at the door
• The focus of the prayer team
• The hospitality
• The music
• The announcements
• The message
• The seating
• The environment
• The altar call (click here to see how to run a great altar call which will eliminate the creation of
pseudo Christians). Click here to read how psuedo Christians are putting the hand brake on
genuine church growth
• The lighting
• Etc.
Suddenly, church becomes all about the lost for the glory of God, not just the saved. And you know
what? This is how it was always meant to be. God is glorified to the degree we expend time, effort, and
resources to complete His priority, the Great Commission.
IF WE EXPEND ALL OUR ENERGY ON WINNING THE LOST, HOW WILL EXISTING
CHRISTIANS GROW?
Good question. Firstly, God grows Christians phenomenally and personally
when they are personally active in evangelism. How does this work?
• BIBLE STUDY: Christians who evangelise have to dig into their bibles for
answers to all the questions non-Christians are asking. This forces bible
study and apologetics research.
• PRAYER: Christians who evangelise receive an infusion of divine compassion
for the lost person when they give the gospel. This stimulates prayer for those they are reaching.
• EXPERIENCING GOD PERSONALLY: Christians who evangelise experience the power and presence
of God tangibly as they step out in faith, taking risks to open their mouths and share the gospel.
The connection between evangelism and finding life in Christ is clear (John 14:21; Mark 8:35).
• WALK THE TALK: Christians who evangelise have to “up their game” when it comes to their life
style and conduct. Now they have put themselves “out there” with their faith through proclamation,
they have to be very careful to make sure their walk matches their talk.
• UNITY AND BLESSING: Christians who evangelise have a strong sense of being united, similar to
the unifying effect of being in an army or a sports team. Psychologists affirm that it’s only when an
army is actually in the battle, the sports team is actually playing the game, that true camaraderie is
forged. When we do His will, the blessed sense of unity comes (Psalm 133).
• DEEPENED RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER CHRISTIANS: Christians who evangelise will
deepen relational ties with each other. This leads to an increasing openness to be real, honest, and
12 Version 1:8
transparent - all essential components for inner healing,
growing, and the development of a healthy church.
Evangelism moves the flock away from pastor
dependence towards God dependence.
In short, God will work through evangelism to grow the
church in maturity, as well as number.
It’s the activity which makes the rest of church life make
sense, giving it context and purpose.
When evangelism is not central, “church” can quickly
become boring, mundane, academic, routine - business
as usual - like the army which never goes to war.
It loses it’s spark.
For 98% of Churches in the West, the fire of evangelism
has gone out
CONCLUSION?
To mobilise a whole church for evangelism marks a return to the original church growth strategy given
by Jesus. He is satisfied with nothing less than 100% mobilisation.
The more profile your church leader gives evangelism in your church,
the faster you will reach THE GOAL. And the faster you reach THE
GOAL, the faster your church will grow in number and maturity. But
if you blow an uncertain trumpet call, not sure that 100%
mobilisation is what you want, you’ll fail. This is about reaping and
sowing. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out.
This is why an ETL is so important. Without you, your church won’t
achieve THE GOAL. Your church leader needs your support/gifting/
and help. He/she can’t do it all on their own. You and your pastor just
need to start the journey and execute this plan.
If you are thinking about becoming an ETL, the first step is to get an evangelism vision for your church.
Getting an evangelism vision for your church.
GETTING A VISION FOR EVANGELISM IN YOUR CHURCH
Vision has three aspects - IMAGINING, PLANNING, AND EXECUTING
• IMAGINING :
Can you see everyone doing evangelism? Can you see people in the community being blessed through
hearing the gospel? Can you see Christians being set alight for Jesus as they share their faith?
Can you see the whole temperature of church rising as evangelism becomes more and more a part of
the life of the church? Can you see people going door to door? Can you see the members of your church
giving the gospel in their places of work, at school, when they are on holiday, to their neighbours? Can
you see the church growing in maturity and number?
Can you see God’s name being lifted up in dark places? Can you see your church leader excited and joyful
as they watch their people coming alive, and the church growing and thriving? Can you see yourself
13 Version 1:8
pioneering something in your church which could help a lot of other churches around the world?
Can you sense this would glorify God and please Him? So, what do you see? You have to own it. It’s
yours from God. Vision is about imagining outcomes in the Spirit and seeing them clearly.
It’s about dreaming big things for God. It’s about seeing reality before it happens. It’s about seeing
something hugely significant in the heart of Jesus that’s died come to life again, like Lazarus.
And if you don’t get REALLY excited about what you see, you need to do some more reading, praying,
meditating, and reflecting.
Write your vision down. It doesn’t have to be too fancy or detailed. Bullet points will do.
Write down what you see. Let your imagination flow. Shape this document over a few days. Make sure
it’s realistic and achievable. e.g. “I want to see our whole city saved in two years through the evangelism
efforts of the people in our church” is not realistic or achievable. Even in times of full blown revival, not
everyone was saved in a particular geographical area.
After you have received your vision, then you need a plan. So let’s talk about planning.
• PLANNING:
This is about having clear ideas/strategies/plans about how you are going to make what you see happen.
It’s all very well “seeing in the Spirit” and in your imagination what you want to see
happen at your church.
But how is it going to happen? What’s the plan? What’s the starting date? What’s
the first thing to do? The second? Where are the money and resources coming
from? Who will you need to get on board? What are you going to teach? This is
where you are going to need detail and specifics.
If you had to mobilise 100% of your church into evangelism, how exactly would
you do it? Dream. Think. Meditate. Pray. Brainstorm. Write your plan down.
As you read through this ETL guide, and become familiar with it, you’ll be able to compare your plans with
the plans and strategies we have come up with.
You’ll then be able to mix and match and choose what’s best for your situation.
Every church situation will be different and you know your church
environment better than anyone else. You know what would work and
wouldn’t work in your situation. After planning comes the execution of the
plan.
• EXECUTING THE PLAN:
If we envision but don’t plan we are just a dreamer. If we envision and plan and don’t execute the plan, we are
still just dreamers.
OK, where to from here? So far, you know the Holy Spirit is stirring you to do something about the Great
Commission in your church; you know why the goal is to settle for nothing less than 100% mobilisation and
you’ve got a vision for it; you can see how your church will grow if they get involved, and you have come up
with a rough plan to make it happen. What’s next? The flow diagram on the next page shows how you will
move from where you are now, to the place where your whole church is regularly engaging in evangelism.
To pull this off, you and your church will need to move through three distinct phases and 10 steps, as the flow
diagram shows.
“
If we envision and plan and don’t execute the plan, we are still
just dreamers.”
14 Version 1:8
HOW TO ACHIEVE THE GOAL...(the green boxes show the preferred route)
MOBILISING 100% OF THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CHURCH FOR EVANGELISM. WHAT
THE JOURNEY MIGHT LOOK LIKE.
STEP 1: Attend a "Change The
DNA Of Your Church" one day
conference (ODC) or hear the
content of the conference via a
series 4-5 messages on Sunday
mornings.
STEP 2: Read Julian
Batchelor's book (JBB)
"Evangelism: Strategies
From Heaven In the
War For Souls."
STEP 6: You are appointed as the
ETL. You begin to be coached by
one of the ESI coaches.
EITHER STEP 7A: your
pastor agrees to host a
ODC and then follows up
by teaching the content of
the ODC to the rest of the
church over 4-5 Sundays
STEP 3: Become
familiar with this
document
STEP 4: Go to your leader and discuss step 1 and/or step 2 and/or step 3 with them. Take 2
copies of a document called "Request to Leaders For a Pre-DNA Change Meeting." Read it
with your pastor so you can answer any questions they have. Details of where to download this
document are on the next page. The outcome you want is for your pastor to agree to meet with
ESI to seriously look at mobilising 100% of the people in your church for evangelism.
STEP 5A:You don't get
immediate buy in at
leadership level. Your
pastor wants more info &
time to process.
STEP 5B: Encourage
your leader to read
JBB
STEP 5C:
Encourage your
pastor to attend a
ODC
STEP 5D: After prayer/
time/more info, still no
movement? Find
another church where
the leadership is
interested in the Great
Commission.
STEP 5: Your pastor agrees
to meet with ESI to look
seriously at mobilising 100%
of the people in your church
for evangelism.
PHASE THREE
PHASE ONE
PHASE TWO
STEP 9: Work the new plan for 4 years, modifying
where necessary as you go so as to achieve "the goal"
STEP 10: 4 years later every member of your church will be
spreading or proclaiming the gospel at least once a week and
your church will be truly and biblically flourishing!
STEP 5E: You don't
get buy in and your
pastor is definitely not
interested in moving
forwards
STEP 5F: Find another
church where the
leadership is interested
in the Great
Commission
OR STEP 7B: Your pastor
agrees to have the content of
the ODC taught as a series
over 4-5 Sundays in your
church
STEP 8: Meet with your pastor
to see how much of the ESI
ONE YEAR PLAN you can
merge with your existing church
plan and the plans you
personally came up with on the
previous page. Together you'll
come up with a new and unique
plan which your whole church
will work to.
15 Version 1:8
FLESHING OUT THE FLOW DIAGRAM...
Step 1 on the flow diagram on the previous page :
ATTEND A ‘CHANGE THE DNA OF YOUR CHURCH’ ONE DAY CONFERENCE
(ODC) OR HEAR THE CONTENT OF THE CONFERENCE VIA A SERIES OF 4-5
MESSAGES IN SOMEONE ELSE’S CHURCH ON SUNDAY MORNINGS.
Quite often the first contact a person has with Evangelism Strategies International (ESI) is to
attend a ODC or hear the content of the conference by chance when they are visiting
someone else’s church. For these people, the next step is to read Julian Batchelor book on
evangelism.
Eventually, you’ll want to host a ODC at your church or have
your whole church hear the content of the ODC via a series
of 4-5 messages on Sunday mornings.
Step 2 on the flow diagram :
READ JULIAN BATCHELOR’s BOOK ‘EVANGELISM:
STRATEGIES FROM HEAVEN IN THE WAR FOR
SOULS’.
Sometimes the first contact someone has with ESI is reading
Julian’s book. The next step for these people is to attend a
ODC. You can access the first five chapters of this book by
visiting www.churchdnachange.com/resources/seminar
attendees. You’ll need a password which is mark1615. Then
look for the section ‘Julian Batchelor’s book Evangelism...’ etc.
You’ll see the chapter files in this section.
Step 3 on the flow diagram :
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THIS
EVANGELISM TEAM LEADERS GUIDE YOUR
ARE READING NOW
Reading this Leader’s guide will help you understand
what’s involved in mobilising 100% of the people in
your church for evangelism.
If reading this document is the first contact you have
had with ESI, the next thing to do is to start reading
Julian’s book.
16 Version 1:8
Step 4 on the flow diagram on the previous page :
MEETING WITH YOUR CHURCH LEADER
• Meet with your leader. Take with you a document called “REQUEST FROM A LEADER A PRE-
DNA CHANGE MEETING”. You can download this document by visiting www.churchdnachange.
com/resources/seminar attendees. You’ll need a password which is
mark1615. Then look for the section “Letters you could write to your
church leadership.” You’ll see the file in this section.
• Before you show them this document, debrief him/her about:
• The ODC (if you’ve been to one)
• Julian Batchelor’s book (if you’ve read it)
• What you have read in this ETL guide.
• Explain to the pastor that:
• You’d like to work with him/her to mobilise all the people in your
church for evangelism.
• That this is an entirely biblical plan.
• Other churches are doing it successfully.
• It will result in the growth of his/her church.
• To mobilise everyone in a church, the church must execute a three phase plan.
• Encourage your pastor and the other leaders at your church to read Julian’s book and attend a ODC.
• At this meeting you are wanting your pastor to agree to proceed to phase one, which is to host what we
call a PRE-DNA CHANGE CONFERENCE MEETING with the rest of the leaders of your church. What
does this meeting involve?
Step 5 on the flow diagram.
PHASE ONE:
HOST A PRE-SEMINAR MEETING WITH
YOUR PASTOR AND OTHER LEADERS IN
YOUR CHURCH.
A representative of Evangelism Strategies International
(ESI) will meet with you and the leaders of your church
OR with the leaders of a group of churches e.g. churches
in the same geographical locality - a suburb of a city or all
the churches in a small town.
• This meeting could take up to three hours but is
often only 1.5 hours.
• We get to meet you and you get to meet us.
• The meeting is a forum to interact and ask
questions.
• At this meeting we want to understand your
existing evangelism vision and hear what you want to achieve.
• We show you how you can mobilise 100% of the people in your church for evangelism, even if you have a
very elderly congregation. The strategies we unveil are not labour intensive.
• You’ll see how you and your church can be more effective with the Great Commission.
• You’ll see how the strategies we offer can really help build unity and forward momentum in your church
• By attending this phase one meeting, you and your church are not obligating yourselves to anything
further. You are effectively window shopping.
17 Version 1:8
Steps 5A-D on the flow diagram.
IF YOU DON’T GET IMMEDIATE BUY IN FROM
YOUR CHURCH LEADERSHIP.
Often a leader will want more time and information before they
buy into the idea of mobilising everyone in their church for
evangelism. This is entirely reasonable, since taking on board
what is written in this document is going to radically change their
church. Also, your first meeting with them might be the first time
they have ever heard of this idea or considered that it was possible.
They will want to know how it could happen and how it would
change their church. They will need time to pray through and
process what you are showing them and what they are reading.
There are a number of things you can do to help them process:
• Drip feed your pastor, other leaders, and prayer team in
your church chapters of Julian Batchelor’s book “Evangelism:
Strategies from Heaven in the War For Souls. You can
download the first five chapters of this book for free as PDF
files. This makes them easy to download and attach to an
email to send to your pastor. Go to www.churchdanchange.
com/resources/seminar attendees. The password is ‘mark1615’. Once you are ‘in’ you’ll see the chapters
there. This strategy of sending out chapters is crucial. Why? The reason your church has lost its focus
on the Great Commission is because your leaders have shifted in their thinking away from the mind of
Christ. Reading targets the mind. Our experience shows that when people read Julian’s book, the Holy
Spirit works through it to change their mind, which will in turn result in a change of behaviour i.e. your
pastor will put the Great Commission on the centre of the stage in your church again.
• Ask the prayer team at your church to pray for your leadership team in light of what they are reading.
• Encourage your leadership and prayer team to attend a ODC.
• Encourage you leaders to phone pastors who are already making the dream of mobilising everyone in
their church for evangelism a reality. Here are just two:
• Iain Dickson, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Mt Maunganui (07) 575 9347 or iainpres@xtra.co.nz.
• Ian Pimm, St Andrews’ Presbyterian Church, Hawkes Bay 06 858 8036 or pimm.ian@xtra.co.nz
• Renee Tobin, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Hawkes Bay 021 535 2486 or r.tobin@xtra.co.nz
• Pray for your leadership team yourself and keep in contact with them regularly. Ask them questions:
• How are you going with your reading?
• Do you have any questions? Is there anything else I can get for you?
• Do you have any concerns/fears? If so, what are they? Let’s talk them through.
• What would it take for you to come on board? i.e. get fully behind this?
If you don’t get buy in eventually, and after you have exhausted all prayer, dialogue, and effort to keep unity in
the Spirit through the bond of peace, change churches.
Find a church which is interested in the Great Commission and the evangelisation of the world.
This might seem like a radical solution but really, why stay in a church which is wilfully living in disobedience
to the priority of Jesus?
There will be other churches which will embrace what you are trying to do, so go and help them. You only
have one life, so use it wisely and strategically (Philippians 2:12).
In the final analysis, the Christian life is not about denominational, church, or loyalty to a particular church
leader, but about obedience to Jesus (John 14:21; 1 Samuel 15:22; Matthew 7:21 etc).
Steps 5 E-F on the flow diagram.
IF YOU DON’T GET IMMEDIATE BUY IN FROM YOUR CHURCH LEADERSHIP
AND THEY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN MOVING FORWARDS
Sadly, a few churches will be like this. Find a church which is interested in the Great Commission and the
evangelisation of the world and go and serve Jesus in that church with all your heart, mind, and strength.
18 Version 1:8
Step 6 on the flow diagram on the previous page
(APPOINTING AN ETL).
It will probably be at this stage that you will be appointed by your pastor
as the ETL in your church. By agreeing to move to phase two, your
leadership have bought into the vision of mobilising everyone in your
church for evangelism so they will need your help and energy.
Steps 7A and 7B on the flow diagram on the previous page
(EXPOSE YOUR CHURCH TO THE ESI
TEACHING ON EVANGELISM).
After you have passed through phase one, you then move to phase two.
PHASE TWO:
EITHER: 7A on the flow diagram.
HOST A SATURDAY CONFERENCE AT YOUR CHURCH
•This can be a combined church event, or one
church can host it on their own.
•This conference can be for groups as small as 10 people.
•The conference is a Saturday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
•We have all the resources you need for advertising and
hosting this conference at your church. Just contact us
and we’ll work with you and help you.
•For further details visit www.churchdnachange.com/
resources/seminar attendees. Password ‘mark1615’.
Look for the section ‘Hosting a DNA change conference” and
download the information you need.
•At best only 30% of your church will attend the ODC. To
capture the other 70% teach the content of the ODC as a series
on Sundays mornings to the rest of the church, starting within a
month of the ODC.
OR: 7B on the flow diagram.
TEACH THE CONTENT OF THE ODC AS A 4-5 PART EVANGELISM SERIES ON
SUNDAY MORNINGS IN YOUR CHURCH
• Who does the teaching? Either:
• The pastor of the host church or their ETL
• Or Julian Batchelor
• Or one of the ESI team
The pastor decides which he/she prefers.
• We provide whoever does the speaking with the power
point slides used in the one day conference (ODC).
• The slides are delivered as a 4-5 part Evangelism Series on
Sunday mornings in your church with notes provided.
• Each part would be about 45 minutes.
• The advantage of 7B over 7A is that everyone in the
church is exposed to the teaching at one time so you can
all move forwards together as a church. This promotes
unity and a strong sense of forward momentum.
19 Version 1:8
• The other GREAT advantage of 7B is that churches don’t become interested in evangelism by chance.
Their interest and passion for it must be awakened. By God’s grace, the Holy Spirit is working
through the ESI resources to do this.
• For a copy of the slides and instructions on how to use them, please contact julian@esisite.com.
After you have passed through phase two, you then move to phase three which is step 8 on the flow diagram.
Step 8 on the flow diagram.
PHASE THREE:
YOU AND YOUR PASTOR FORMULATE A UNIQUE PLAN FOR YOUR CHURCH.
This is the all important “how to” or “where to from here?”
Phase 3 is where the real exciting stuff happens!
We have mapped out a whole year of planning for you.
• It’s called THE ESI ONE YEAR PLAN.
• This is a very specific, practical, step by step plan to show
you how to mobilise 100% of your people into evangelism.
• As the ETL you are provided with a 77 page guide (the
EVANGELISM TEAM LEADER’S GUIDE) which unpacks the ESI ONE YEAR PLAN.
• Inside this guide are 12 specific, practical strategies which you as the ETL will implement over a 12
month period.
• Most churches will already have a year plan, so it’s at this stage you and your pastor will sit down to
see how much of the ESI ONE YEAR PLAN you can integrate into the existing church plan. You’ll also
weave into this plan some of your own ideas. Together, you’ll come up with a new unique plan for your
church.
NB: The more of the 12 strategies from the ESI ONE YEAR PLAN you include in the
new plan, the faster you’ll reach the goal and achieve a DNA change.
To come up with this unique plan, the following are some of the key strategies to be negotiated.
• Will the church leader allow you to have a 5-10 minute “evangelism slot” (marked at “ES” on the ESI ONE
YEAR PLAN) on Sunday mornings every 2 weeks to motivate, encourage, role play, inform, inspire the
church etc for evangelism?
• In between weeks, will he allow a 3 minute evangelism testimony (ET)?
• Will he allow a DNA change conference in his church once a year?
• Can you run a teaching series on evangelism for your Eteam & for those who want it? Negotiate when
and with whom.
• Would your church leader be open to using the teaching slides which are used in the DNA change
conference on Sunday mornings?
• Will the church leader make your ETL role official in the church?
• Will he/she give the ETL profile and a budget?
• What parts of the NEW ONE YEAR PLAN will he allow you to organise and run without further
reference to him?
• Will your pastor agree on an outreach plan to reach every person in your town/suburb with the gospel?
The new and unique one year plan you come up with will become the one the whole
church works to in the coming year (s) until “the goal” is reached.
Once it’s finalised, regularly report on plans, progress, struggles, challenges, resourcing etc to your church
leader. This plan will likely be constantly tweaked as you progress on your journey towards achieving the
goal.
20 Version 1:8
PHASE
ONE
PHASE
TWO
PHASE
THREE
IF YOUR CHURCH HAS HAD NO CONTACT WITH EVANGELISM
STRATEGIES INTERNATIONAL, WHAT DO YOU DO?
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS STIRRING YOU TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE
APPALLING STATE OF THE GREAT COMMISSION IN THE WEST i.e.
only 2% of Christians are now active in evangelism.
Step 1: Attend a
"Change The DNA Of
Your Church"
Saturday conference
or go and hear the
content of the DNA
change conference
via a series 4-5
messages in a
someone else's
church on Sunday
mornings.
STEP 2:
Read Julian Batchelor's
book (JBB) "Evangelism:
Strategies From Heaven
In the War For Souls."
STEP 4: Go to your leader to request a
Pre-DNA change meeting
STEP 5: Your pastor agrees
to host a pre-dna change
meeting at your church.
STEP 6: You are appointed as the
ETL. You begin to be coached by
one of the ESI coaches.
EITHER STEP 7A: your
pastor agrees to host a
ODC and then follows up
by teaching the content of
the ODC to the rest of the
church over 4-5 Sundays
STEP 3:
Become familiar with
the document you are
reading now.
OR STEP 7B: Your pastor agrees
to have the content of the ODC
taught as a series over 4-5
Sundays at your church
STEP 8: You and your pastor integrate the ESI ONE YEAR
PLAN with your existing church plan plus your own ideas to
come up with a new and unique church plan.
STEP 9: Continue to work the plan for as long as it takes to achieve "the
goal". This plan will probably need to be tweaked as you journey
towards the goal.
STEP 10: 4 years later every member of your church will
be spreading or proclaiming the gospel at least once a
week, and your church will be flourishing!
21 Version 1:8
