Sunday mornings services. They become critically important. HOW SUNDAY SERVICES WOULD NEED TO CHANGE: With so many non-Christians visiting your church on Sunday mornings, the focus would probably be a lot different from what it is now. How so? The Sunday service would need to be geared towards catering to the needs of those 20 unsaved non- Christians. You might only get one chance with these 20, so you don’t want to blow it. Literally every aspect of church on Sunday morning would be carefully scripted and planned to cater for this group: • The welcome at the door • The focus of the prayer team • The hospitality • The music • The announcements • The message • The seating • The environment • The altar call (click here to see how to run a great altar call which will eliminate the creation of pseudo Christians). Suddenly, church becomes all about the lost for the glory of God, not just the saved. And you know what? This is how it was always meant to be. God is glorified to the degree we expend time, effort, and resources to complete His priority, the Great Commission. IF WE EXPEND ALL OUR ENERGY ON WINNING THE LOST, HOW WILL EXISTING CHRISTIANS GROW? Good question. Firstly, God grows Christians phenomenally and personally when they are personally active in evangelism. How does this work? • BIBLE STUDY: Christians who evangelise have to dig into their bibles for answers to all the questions non-Christians are asking. This forces bible study and apologetics research. • PRAYER: Christians who evangelise receive an infusion of divine compassion for the lost person when they give the gospel. This stimulates prayer for those they are reaching. • EXPERIENCING GOD PERSONALLY: Christians who evangelise experience the power and presence of God tangibly as they step out in faith, taking risks to open their mouths and share the gospel. The connection between evangelism and finding life in Christ is clear (John 14:21; Mark 8:35). • WALK THE TALK: Christians who evangelise have to “up their game” when it comes to their life style and conduct. Now they have put themselves “out there” with their faith through proclamation, they have to be very careful to make sure their walk matches their talk. • UNITY AND BLESSING: Christians who evangelise have a strong sense of being united, similar to the unifying effect of being in an army or a sports team. Psychologists affirm that it’s only when an army is actually in the battle, the sports team is actually playing the game, that true camaraderie is forged. When we do His will, the blessed sense of unity comes (Psalm 133). • DEEPENED RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER CHRISTIANS: Christians who evangelise will deepen relational ties with each other. This leads to an increasing openness to be real, honest, and 12 Version 1:8
transparent - all essential components for inner healing, growing, and the development of a healthy church. Evangelism moves the flock away from pastor dependence towards God dependence. In short, God will work through evangelism to grow the church in maturity, as well as number. It’s the activity which makes the rest of church life make sense, giving it context and purpose. When evangelism is not central, “church” can quickly become boring, mundane, academic, routine - business as usual - like the army which never goes to war. It loses it’s spark. For 98% of Churches in the West, the fire of evangelism has gone out CONCLUSION? To mobilise a whole church for evangelism marks a return to the original church growth strategy given by Jesus. He is satisfied with nothing less than 100% mobilisation. The more profile your church leader gives evangelism in your church, the faster you will reach THE GOAL. And the faster you reach THE GOAL, the faster your church will grow in number and maturity. But if you blow an uncertain trumpet call, not sure that 100% mobilisation is what you want, you’ll fail. This is about reaping and sowing. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out. This is why an ETL is so important. Without you, your church won’t achieve THE GOAL. Your church leader needs your support/gifting/ and help. He/she can’t do it all on their own. You and your pastor just need to start the journey and execute this plan. If you are thinking about becoming an ETL, the first step is to get an evangelism vision for your church. Getting an evangelism vision for your church. GETTING A VISION FOR EVANGELISM IN YOUR CHURCH Vision has three aspects - IMAGINING, PLANNING, AND EXECUTING • IMAGINING : Can you see everyone doing evangelism? Can you see people in the community being blessed through hearing the gospel? Can you see Christians being set alight for Jesus as they share their faith? Can you see the whole temperature of church rising as evangelism becomes more and more a part of the life of the church? Can you see people going door to door? Can you see the members of your church giving the gospel in their places of work, at school, when they are on holiday, to their neighbours? Can you see the church growing in maturity and number? Can you see God’s name being lifted up in dark places? Can you see your church leader excited and joyful as they watch their people coming alive, and the church growing and thriving?
