HOW WILL THE CHURCH GROW?
THIS IS HOW IT IS:
There are currently 17 churches in New Zealand who have started on
a journey to achieve THE GOAL. They are all at various stages. Your
church could be the next to begin the journey!
So how will achieving THE GOAL grow your church?
Good question. Your pastor will want to know the answer. He/she
wants growth, which is an entirely God-given desire.
An ETL, THE ESI ONE YEAR PLAN, and this ETL GUIDE are key
components of a plan to grow churches.
HOW THE PLAN WORKS:
Every church which begins this journey towards THE GOAL will start with a very small
group of people who are interested in evangelism - expect around 2% to start with.
This 2% group (your Eteam) led by you the Evangelism Team Leader (ETL), will start
proclaiming or spreading the gospel.
Non-Christians who hear the gospel through your Eteam will react in one of three ways:
1. NOT OPEN: The gospel is proclaimed, and both parties (i.e. the Christian and the
non-Christian) are polite and gracious with each other. At the end, the non-Christian confesses that
if they died tonight they would go to hell. This doesn’t concern them, and they don’t want to go any
further. The Christian and the non-Christian shake hands, and the event is brought to a pleasant and
polite close (20%).
2. OPEN: The same as in (1) above, except they are concerned to find out they are going to hell. However,
they don’t want to go any further- just yet. They want time to think and process what they have
just heard and are not ready to come to church - just yet (50%).
3. RESPONSIVE: They are interested. They are concerned to find out that if they died tonight they
would go to hell. They have lots of questions, and want to go further. They respond positively to an
invitation to come to church (30%).
RESEARCH FINDINGS:
Our research shows that if 10 people in a church of 100 are regularly active in
evangelism, this group of 10 will bring, on average, 2 people a week to church on
any given Sunday i.e. the collective effort of 10 people results in 2 non-Christians
coming to church on a Sunday morning (or being brought to your home/life
groups so they can build relationships before coming to a church service on
Sunday). That’s a 20% strike rate - or 104 non-Christians per year.
Now, take your church of 100 and project forward to the point where everyone is
active in evangelism. Remember, this is THE GOAL. What, for example, would
Sunday morning look like when THE GOAL is reached?
You’d have 120 people in church, 20 of whom would be complete non-Christians. In a year, that’s 1040
non-Christians visiting your church. Imagine if only 10% of these were saved and assimilated into the life
of the church. Your church will have doubled in the first year. If a church of 100 can double in a year by
mobilising 100% of it’s people to proclaim or spread the gospel, then total mobilisation of a church is the
golden key to church growth. Are there other keys? Yes, there are many. One to note here is
11 Version 1:8
