Mr. Leo Ledohowski
at this year’s Testimonial Banquet
This year, the Osvita Foundation has chosen Ukrainian
Mr. Leo Ledohowski as the Honouree for his extraordinary
efforts and contributions to society and the Ukrainian
community.
Mr. Ledohowski is the President and Chair of Canad Inns, the
largest, fastest growing and most progressive hotel chain in the
Under his direction, Canad Inns sponsored a
documentary video titled “Vichnaya Pam’yat” which
features exclusive interviews with Ukrainian famine
survivors who now live in Winnipeg. The Holodomor is
now a part of the social studies curriculum in our
schools.
As part of a year long commemoration of the 75th
anniversary of the Holodomor, Mr. Ledohowski,
welcomed and honored the President of Ukraine, Victor
Yushchenko, at a private luncheon on May 27th, 2008.
“President Yushchenko’s visit to Winnipeg is exciting for
the community and for all Canadians,” said Ledohowski.
“As a Ukrainian Canadian, I am proud to take part in informing Canadians of this dark
chapter of World History. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to welcome President
Yushchenko and present him with this video that tells the story of the survivors of the
Holodomor.”

Spring is almost here and what a wonderful time it will be. It seems that everyone is looking forward to warm weather
and spring activities. Our newsletter is full of upcoming spring events and activities for our children and parents from
within our program as well as in the community. We are so fortunate to have so much being organized for us and our
children.
Included in this edition is information on Easter and some of the Easter rituals. I always find it interesting to learn about
how people observed different celebrations in days gone by and how many people maintain certain traditions and how
some traditions have changed. We hope you enjoy the Easter articles. You can always let us know of other things we
can share with our readers.
As you may have noticed, we will be celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the program. If you know of program alumni,
educators and students, please have them contact us. We would love to find out where they are, what they are doing
and invite them to partake in next year’s celebrations.
I want to thank Krystyna and Nataliya for all their hard work in pulling all the information together and including
Ukrainian articles and providing translation. They do a great job to ensure this is an interesting publication.
Finally, please note all the dates of the various fieldtrips and camps which your children may be participating in. If you
have an opportunity to attend any of the day fieldtrips or Grade 6 Camp with your child(ren), please do so. They are all
very interesting and fun experiences for both the children and yourself.

Grade 4 Multicultural Trip
This year’s Grade 4 Multicultural Trip will take place on Friday May 22. The students,
teachers and chaperones will start off the day with a visit to The Caboto Centre - Italian
Cultural Centre ( http://www.cabotocentre.com) for a presentation and “tour” of Italy.
After the Caboto Centre, everyone will head to the Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens for a
presentation and tour of this famous Ukrainian’s beautiful artwork.

Ukrainian Holy Week and Easter Traditions
Христос Воскрес! - Воiстину Воскрес!
Holy Week starts with Verbna Nedilia/ Palm Sunday. The willow is used instead of the palm both in Canada as
well as Ukraine, because of the similarity of climates - that is - no palm trees! It honors the triumph of Jesus entering
Jerusalem. The pussy willow branches have the additional significance of showing life early in the spring, symbolizing
the hope of the resurrection. They are gathered and blessed at services. After the service, parishioners
gently tap each other with the willows, in imitation of the scourging of Christ while repeating The willow hits, not I; A
week from now will be Easter ( Loza bje, ne ja bju, Vid neni za tyzhden' bude Velykyi Den'). The tapping with the
willow also signifies the wishes for health, happiness and wealth. After Easter, the willow was either stuck in the
ground - and legend would have it that if daughters married that their young man would be healthy, strong and a
good provider. Otherwise, as with tradition regarding blessed items, the willows would be burned and the ashes
scattered on the fields to ensure a good crop.
The Great Week was a flurry of activity in Ukraine. Everything had to be done before Holy Thursday as no work
was done until after the Easter celebration. House cleaning had to be done, the annual coat of whitewash had to
be applied, plowing, planting and the other farm chores. As well, this is when pysanky would be done, the food prepared
for the Easter basket to be taken to church for blessing and of course the paska and babka had to be baked.
The icons would be draped in embroidered linen towels (rushnyky - ritual cloths) in anticipation of Velyk Den'
Strastney Chetver (Holy or Passion Thursday), recalls the Passion of Christ. The passion service consists of
readings from the twelve Gospels relating the story of the suffering of Jesus. The gospels are read (or sung), along
with prayers, prostrations and hymns with bells being rung after each chapter. The bells are then silenced and replaced
with either wooden clappers or the striking of a mallet on a board. The bells are not heard again until Easter
morning.
Velykodnia Piatnytsia (Good Friday), observes Jesus’ Crucifixion. A fast abstaining from meat and dairy products
is observed and no manual labor of any kind is permitted. Conversation is muted and must avoid argument.
Good Friday observances include the Veneration of the Holy Shroud. The Holy Shroud is the representation of the
sheet that Christ was buried in. There is a procession of worshippers carrying the Crucifix, banners and the Holy
Shroud, with the priest carrying the Eucharist and the altar boys carrying lighted candles and the wooden clappers.
The congregation circles the church and reenters symbolizing the journey from the Crucifix on Calvary to the tomb.
The Holy Shroud is placed on a representative tomb and is surrounded by willows, candles and flowers
Holy Saturday is when parishioners visit the Holy Shroud to worship and kiss the wounds of Christ. A guard of
honor keeps vigil at the Holy Sepulcher. Fasting is continued to prepare the soul for purity of confession on the .
Holy Saturday is also when one goes to the Sviachenia or the Blessing of Traditional Easter Foods.

Easter Sunday The Resurrection Mass was always eagerly awaited. In olden times a was held in the early morning
before the rising of the sun. At that time in history all churches in Ukraine were built to face the East. When the
Mass was ending and the priest first said "Chrystos Voskres" (Christ Has Risen), the doors of the church would be
opened and the rays of the rising sun would envelop the faithful. Following the Mass the people greeted each other
in the traditional way, by kissing each other three times. This is called "chrystosuvania" The people would then
stand outside the church with their baskets filled with the food which they had prepared for the blessing ceremony.
A lit candle was always placed in the baskets which were decorated with aromatic herbs and periwinkle
HAHILKY-VESNIANKY(HAYIVKY) Ritual Spring Songs and Dances
On Easter Sunday, young girls performed hahilky in front of the church or in the cemetery. In pagan times hahilky
were performed in sacred groves by the water. These group dances, songs, games and dramatic scenes were believed
to serve a magical function with the aim of enticing Spring and chasing Winter away. These songs and
dances personified a funeral for frost and winter. They also imitated planting and growth of crops, and tried to ensure
a bountiful harvest through the magic of music, words and body motion.
With these dances and songs the people attempted to entice and enchant all the good spirits of the reawakened
Nature so that it would bring them good luck and wealth. Hahilky addressed various subjects. In some the dancers
walked in a circle imitating the rotation of the sun in the sky, while in another the gestures showed the continuity of
human life on earth. There was also a group of hahilky that spoke about the beauty and industriousness of young
maidens, since Spring was also a time when love blossomed.

PASKA (Easter "babka")
Starter: 2 oz. yeast (2 packages of dry yeast)
1 tbsp. milk
1 tbsp. sugar
2-3 tbsp. water
Dissolve the yeast in the above mixture; wait
until it bubbles and then add
4 cups sifted flour
2 cups warm milk
Mix all ingredients and wait until the dough
rises.
PASKA - Easter Ritual Bread
The most honoured Easter bread was the paska and the preparation and baking of paska was considered one of the
most important tasks of the year. People believed that the future could be predicted, depending on how this holiday
bread turned out. Every homemaker wanted her paska to be the best and the biggest, therefore while baking it she performed
various magical gestures and used incantations.
The dough for the paska was kneaded in a trough which rested on a pillow so that the bread would be light. During the
preparation the homemaker had to maintain pure thoughts. While the paska was in the oven no one was allowed to sit or
make a loud noise for fear it would collapse in the oven. In some regions of Ukraine the man of the house stood guard in
his front door lest someone enter and cast an evil spell while the paska was baking.
A successfully baked paska brought great joy to the family. Wrapped in a rushnyk (ritual cloth), or placed in a basket, the
paska was carried to church by the master of the house to be blessed in a ceremony following the Resurrection Mass on
Easter morning. Other foods such as cheese, butter, salt, pork fat, horse radish, eggs, pysanky (Ukrainian Easter egg),
ham, sausages, as well as various seeds were also brought to church for the blessing. Immediately after the ceremony
the family would hurry home to share the blessed paska and thus begin Easter breakfast.
The antiquity of the paska as a ritual bread is evidenced not only by the rituals performed during the preparations and
baking but also by the decorations which adorned this holiday bread. The top of the paska was covered with symbolic
signs made of dough such as a cross, solar signs, rosettes, leaves, pine cones and sometimes even birds and bees.
Most of these decorations were remnants of an ancient pagan religion tied to the cult of the sun and bread.
To the mix add:
8 cups flour
3 whole eggs
8 egg yolks
1/4 lb. (or 8 tbsp.) sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 vanilla sugar
lemon rind of 1 lemon
juice of 1 orange
1 jigger of rum or other spirits
(brandy)
1/4 lb. melted butter

DECORATIONS
FOR THE TOP OF THE PASKA:
Mix all the ingredients together. Add butter at the very end. Knead well
for about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour, until the dough is elastic. The dough will
be very stiff. If it is too stiff, add 1/4 cup milk. Place the dough in a warm
spot and let it rise until double in bulk. When ready, fill greased and
floured pans 1/2 or 1/3 full with dough. Make dough decorations for the
tops of the pasky: solar motifs, square crosses, scrolls, braids, rosettes,
birds, etc. Place the pans in a warm spot and let the dough rise until it
reaches the top of each pan. Brush the tops of the dough with an egg
wash. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 for 10 minutes, and then at 325
for additional 45 minutes. When done, take the pans out of oven and
wait until the pasky cool in the pans. Then, carefully take them out of the
pans and place gently on a cloth-covered pillow. Allow to cool completely.
INCANTATIONS for a successful paska. Upon placing the paska into the
oven say: "Holy paska, be as grand and beautiful as the sun, because
we are baking you for the sun. Let all members of our family be healthy.
Let our children grow up as quickly as you grow. "Come out as beautiful
as you go in!"
DO'S and DONT'S:
• When preparing paska dough and during the kneading, think
only good thoughts, shoo away all evil ones.
• Don't let any of your neighbors or worse – strangers - come
into the house when you are preparing the paska. They might
put an evil eye on your paska and it will not rise as it should.
Don't make any sudden noises while the paska is rising or
while it is in the oven baking. Also, don't sit down while the
paska is in the oven or it will become flat.
• If you carefully follow all of the above instructions, the paska
will be light, airy and tasty.

FOLKLORAMA — CELEBRATING 40 YEARS!
This year, Winnipeg’s Folklorama is celebrating 40 years as one of the
largest and longest running multicultural festivals in the world!
This year’s Ukrainian Kyiv Pavilion will take place from Sunday, August 9 - Saturday, August 15.

Pavilion done by the EUBP students.
We are asking all EUBP teachers to begin the student art projects and submit completed
artwork and projects to the MPUE office to be displayed at the Kyiv Pavilion.
Please keep in mind this year’s theme when creating the artwork,
but any Ukrainian themed artwork is welcome.

Aнгло-Українська Двомовна Програма — English Ukrainian Bilingual Program
Celebrating it’s 30 Year Anniversary
1979-2009
Did you know that in 1979, the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program (EUBP) began in Manitoba in 5
schools and has now expanded to 12 schools in 6 school divisions from grades K to 9?
It all started back in mid 1970’s when some parents decided to petition the government to develop a heritage language
bilingual program. There was a lot of hard work in order to make their dream of an English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program
come to life. In the spring of 1979 a small group of educators, six teachers, two who continue to teach in the program
today, and a Ukrainian language consultant met for the first time in an office at the Department of Education Building on
Portage Avenue to prepare for the first English-Ukrainian Bilingual teaching year.
The pilot program of 1979 to 1982 was a success and the program grew to where it is today, which include the
following schools:
� Ralph Brown Elementary School, R.F. Morrison Elementary School, Springfield Heights Elementary School, Bernie
Wolfe Community School, H.C. Avery Middle School, Chief Peguis Junior High School, in Winnipeg,
�Oak Bank Elementary School and Springfield Middle School in Oakbank,
�Smith-Jackson Elementary and Mackenzie Middle School in Dauphin, and
�Happy Thought and East Selkirk Middle School in East Selkirk.
The EUBP is more than a language program with the following characteristics:
�This program is open to everyone. Students are not required to come from a Ukrainian background to enrol.
�The program is approved and monitored by the Manitoba Department of education.
�It brings together children and their families in a unique community setting.
The Program offers:
� an energetic and talented school staff
� an active and involved parent body
� development of an appreciation for cultural diversity in Canada
� exciting cultural experiences including Pysanka workshops, St. Nicholas concerts, Christmas Eve dinners, Koliada,
Malanka, Hahilky, Easter Breakfasts, Camp, inter-English-Ukrainian Bilingual school field trips
Another interesting aspect of this program is how it allows children who have recently immigrated to Manitoba,
to integrate into Canadian society. EUBP classrooms provide an environment:
� which allows children who are new to Canada to thrive
� where they learn English quickly while having the comfort of a common cultural environment within the classroom,
and where non-English speaking parents can communicate with the teachers in Ukrainian.
Without a doubt this is a special educational environment, where children have the chance to thrive in the public
school system while extending their language capabilities and cultural awareness. Even French is a component
of the learning! The result of this heritage language program is that it:
� promotes self-esteem
� enhances personal and cultural identity
� provides for better communication and problem-solving skills
� expands cultural, economic, educational and professional opportunities
� prepares for living and working in cross-cultural environments
� provides the opportunity for Manitoba students to study other languages in addition to English and French has
been proven by research to stimulate the brain and has been linked to stronger Math and Science scores in later
grades
We are truly indebted to the parents and educators who had the dream to begin the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program
here in Manitoba. It has provided thousands of children in this province with a truly unique opportunity to learn and grow.
We are looking for all EUBP alumni, students, teachers, administrators and educational assistants, to invite
them to our upcoming celebrations.

дитячому садку починається з вересня 2009
Seven Oaks Sadok Inc раді оголосити про відкриття Програми після
Дитячого Двомовного садка. Програма доступна для всіх дітей
дошкільного віку 4-5 років і буде відбуватися з вересня по червень,
з понеділка по пятницю 11:30 - 15:30 год.
Вартість: $10 за день за одну дитину. Садок забезпечує легку
перекуску. Діти повинні мати свій ланч.

Читаємо разом
Яєчко золоте, та не те
Казка
Жили собі дід та баба. І була у них курочка Ряба. От якось знесла
курочка яєчко. Не просте, а золоте!
Дідо бив-бив не розбив. Баба била-била не розбила. Мишка бігла,
хвостиком зячепила, яєчко впало і... покотилося! Покотилося аж за
двері, викотилося на ганок. А з ганку на траву, травичкою за пліт, а
там на доріжку і подалося до лісу! Котиться яєчко, а на зустріч
йому лисичка. Схопила лисичка золоте яєчко і до своєї хати
понесла. Думає: покладу яєчко в кошик, притрушу пір’ячком,
виведу з яєчка курчатко. Виросте воно дуже велике. Отот вже
наїмся! Як подумала — так і зробила. Цілу ніч лисичка над яєчком
сиділа, а на ранок чує: тук-тук! Стукає хтось у яєчку. Зраділа
лисичка! Витягла яєчко з кошика, а воно тільки бух! І впало, трісь,
розбилося! А з яєчка викотилося... Сонечко!
Тепле, лагідне, весняне! Підстрибнуло Сонечко
високо-високо, аж до неба...
Не віриш, визирни у вікно, весняне сонечко
й досі там.
