Lake Luzerne Celebrates
225th Anniversary with
History and Adventure
Est. 1792-2017
Originally, Luzerne was part of the “Town of Queensbury
Tract” beyond the mountain at its western edge (their west part of
town), and the place was called Westfield, which was obligated to
stand on its own feet and organize itself into a township. At the
end of the Revolutionary War with England, Westfield became
known as Fairfield and incorporated as a township on April 10,
1792 when the town of Queensbury relinquished their ‘west’ tract.
The Town later became known as Luzerne and then in 1963 the

name changed again to Lake Luzerne as it is known today.
Two hundred twenty-five years later, the celebration will include
several educational history opportunities starting July 1:
Lake Luzerne History Day, National Day of the Cowboy, 90 Years
of the Dude Ranch Trail and a pageant style celebration parade on
September 16th.
Part of the summer season will include local history buffs and
Ambassadors to be on duty at the Rockwell-Harmon House, the
Gailey Hill School House, the Kinnear Museum of Local History
and the Pagenstecher Pulp Mill Museum every Thursday- through
Sunday from 11-3. All museums are within
a three-block walking distance.
You will fall in love with our past,
present and future, especially along the
Indian Trail from the river to the lake.
This leisurely stroll between “Museums
on Main Street” is a village delight
and very pet friendly. The real treat
is being surrounded by flowing waters
from Lake Luzerne, Wells Creek, and the
Mighty Hudson River’s narrowest and
most picturesque location, Rockwell Falls
from the Bridge of Hope. The rush of the falls is enchanting,
breathtaking and relaxing, especially from the shoreline park behind
the Rockwell-Harmon House Cottage.
