Co-President’s Message
Linda Needel & Wendy Drabinski
Shalom!
We would like to thank Larry and all the outgoing board
members for all of their hard work. We are excited and
honored to be co-presidents of our temple and look forward to
working with the board of trustees and congregants to ensure
our temple is a spiritual and safe home for all.
We recently attended the Scheidt Seminar for incoming
temple presidents, which was an invaluable experience. We
acquired skills, networked with other synagogue leaders,
learned about philanthropy and youth engagement, and more.
We both came back energized and ready to fulfill our role as
synagogue presidents. While at Scheidt, we learned that we
are doing lots of things very well and that we can improve on
others. We hope that we can count on the support of our
congregation to become involved and be ambassadors for our
“little” shul in Havre de Grace, Maryland.
Do not hesitate contacting us with any concerns, ideas or just
to say “hi.” We are around the synagogue a lot and are both
very approachable.
We look forward to serving our congregation.
See you around the shul!
Religious Practices Committee – News and Notes
Mark Wolkow & Melissa Brown
As I write this, I am sitting here with mixed emotions. Having
served as co-chair of the Religious Practices Committee for
many years, I realize how much I have learned. I have had the
opportunity to work with a wonderful team of dedicated
individuals who have the best interest of the synagogue at
heart. While being co-chair of the RPC can be a challenge at
times, it is also very rewarding. After every High Holiday
season, as stressful as it can be, the sense of accomplishment is
so satisfying.
While I will still remain a member of RPC, I will be handing
off my co-chair hat to Melissa Brown. I want to thank Melissa
for stepping up to this fulfilling position. I have to also thank
my co-chair Mark Wolkow for his time and dedication to this
committee. Without his knowledge, expertise and
organization, this position would have been a difficult
challenge for me. Mark made it easy and I have cherished all
the time we worked closely together. Thank you to everyone
on the committee. It takes a village! Remember, RPC is always
looking for people to join the committee. Take a risk… you will
find it very rewarding. See you around Shul in my new role.
B’Shalom,
Religious School News
Jenn Bober & Cheryl Conley
The Religious School Committee is proud to announce the recipients of the
Yvette Kravitz Award and the Eileen Moss Memorial Award.
The Yvette Kravitz Award is given to a member who has gone above and
beyond on behalf of the Religious School students. This year’s honoree is Randi
Chancey. Our children’s first Jewish learning experience is in Miss Randi’s
room. They learn about being Jewish and about holidays; the Hebrew letters
and blessings over food and drink. Her dedication to the students of the Adolph
Nord Religious School spans many years and for that we are all thankful. Mazel
Tov, Randi – We are so lucky to have you as a teacher!
The Eileen Moss Memorial Award is given to a sixth-grade student who has
shown exemplary attendance in Religious School and services, and has shown
improvement in Hebrew skills throughout the midweek Religious School years.
This year’s honoree is Rayna Drabinski, daughter of Wendy and Patrick. Rayna
and her family are at services most weeks, and it shows in the classroom. Or is
it that she is rarely absent from the classroom and it shows at services? Either
way, Eileen would have recognized and applauded Rayna for showing up and
participating in both. Mazel Tov, Rayna- We are proud of you and your
accomplishments!
Thank you to Dr. Dave for constructing the buzzer system for the end-of-year
Festi-Bowl Tournament! The students particularly loved buzzing in against
each other, and now teachers have another fun resource for the classroom.
Many thanks to Brian Schorr for again solving “The Mystery of the Coins” by
providing the namesake book for the winner of the Eileen Moss Award. This
book was read by Morah Moss to all of her classes when she taught, and it
subsequently went out of print. Thanks again for working your magic,
Brian! And congrats to the winner Rayna Drabinski! May you read it in good
health. –Menahelet Jenn Bober
Jacob Stanford Henry Folus
Jacob is the youngest of three children. He has two
older sisters Olivia and Sarah. Jacob is in 7 th grade
at Southampton Middle School. He plays bass in
the orchestra and skateboards anywhere he can. He also enjoys playing on
the computer and making videos, montages, and vlogs. He hopes to one day
put those skills together and be a film maker. Jacob has been attending
Temple Adas Shalom since he was 3 years old starting with Miss Judy’s preschool
and then Pre-K with Miss Randy. He is very grateful to all of his
religious school teachers for their patience and guidance.
For Jacob’s Tri- Mitzvahlon, he chose to twin with Jakob Hiller. He was a
young boy who perished in the Holocaust and did not live to have a Bar
Mitzvah. Jacob is honored to share his Bar Mitzvah with Jakob Hiller. The
chair draped with the Tallit is there in memory of Jakob Hiller. The Tallit is
the one worn by Jacob Folus’ father, Brian, at his Bar Mitzvah. For Jacob’s
service to the community he is collecting eyeglasses to recycle to the Lions
Club. For his service to the Temple Jacob has chosen to do two things. He
and his family have planted an apple tree near the entrance to our nature
walk. Jacob and his father and the 8 th grade religious school class, 7 th grade
teachers, and B’nai Mitzvah teachers, are making a short movie on the joys
of becoming a B’nai Mitzvah. This movie will be posted on the Temple Adas
Shalom web site very soon.
Jacob and his parents, Brian and Tammy, would like to express our
gratitude to all the leaders and teachers here at Temple Adas Shalom and
the Adolph Nord Religious School. Thank you to Rabbi Gila Ruskin, and
Mr. Andy Klein for preparing Jacob for his Bar Mitzvah.
We thank the entire 7 th grade class and their families for being a part of our
family.
Aidan Feulner
Aidan was born on March 10, 2004, in Harford County and
has lived here his entire life. Through his experiences at Harford Day School, sports,
synagogue, and his relationships within the community he has grown into a kind,
loving, and confident young adult. Aidan has blossomed academically and socially at
Harford Day, where he has maintained a straight “A” record throughout his elementary
and middle school years. He became a member of the Center for Talented Youth, at
the Johns Hopkins University, at a very young age, and received an award for High
Honors in a CTY talent search. Aidan has participated in a number of CTY online
courses and programs, including a week on the Skipjack as part of a Living Classroom
experience. He will be graduating 8th grade at Harford Day School in 2018 and is
looking forward to a new adventure when he enters high school in the fall of that year.
Aidan is a dynamic person and often reminds many of us of his late grandfather, Harry
Kale. He actively uses his right brain to think and create abstractly, and his left brain
to perform well academically. He is silly at times, and is able to bring laughter to those
around him. He is creative and artistic, but also inquisitive, thoughtful, and
academically gifted. He has a wit and humor that makes those around him laugh, and
join with him in his sometimes light-hearted approach to the world. Aidan is truly
comfortable in his own skin, and his joy of life is evident. He sometimes breaks out in
song and dance, but may just as easily engage someone in a conversation about politics
or current events (ask him if you dare). Aidan’s life has been blessed with many
adventures and challenges, and one of his many gifts is his ability to analyze situations,
collect information, and formulate his own opinions that he articulates well to others.
Aidan’s love of art led to his decision to collect art supplies for the Boys and Girls Club
of Harford County. He hopes to enhance art awareness in the community and provide
much needed supplies for children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to
experience the enjoyment of art.
Aidan has developed into a smart, talented, happy, loving and kind young man. He is a
deep, complex, and thoughtful individual who is just fun to be around. He loves to be
with his friends and family, but like all kids his age he spends as much time as he can
on electronic devices. We are very proud of Aidan and look forward to guiding and
supporting him through the next new and exciting phase of his life.
Sisterhood News
Elise Woods
Our Sisterhood Shabbat service was held on May 12, and I would like to
thank Pat Wolkow, Denise Gordon, Wendy Drabinski and Naomi
Walton for leading such a lovely service. Our new board was installed for
the coming year and we will be working over the summer planning our
events for next year. Congratulations to all of our new officers!
We hope that those of you who are not members of the Sisterhood will
consider joining next year. We do wonderful things for the temple and
participate in many fun and meaningful activities. For example, on June 3
we will be participating in the Fourth Annual Amanda Hichkad
Celebration Walk in support of Cancer LifeNet at the University of
Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health’s Kaufman Cancer Center. The
event will be held at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland, starting at
7:30 am, and our team is the Tri-Faith Alliance. Please consider walking
with us. If you have any questions about the walk, please contact Marcia
Buchness at 410-916-6875.
Later in the day on June 3 we will be having our Sisterhood Year End
Event at the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center in Abingdon. Beginning at
11:00 am, we will learn the history and purpose of the beautiful center
and why it is important to us. We will experience a complete tour of the
building, a conversation with a Park Naturalist and a dairy luncheon.
The cost is $18 per person. Please RSVP to Pat Wolkow at
patwolkow@gmail.com if you plan to attend. All are welcome.
Have a wonderful summer!
