MISSISSAUGA: With June being designated as Seniors Month in Ontario, Mississauga–Brampton South Amrit Mangat joined seniors in celebrations at Neebin Park in Mississauga last Friday. She spoke about what the provincial government is doing for seniors. The MPP said the Ontario government is proposing to provide seniors above 65 with a new Ontario Seniors Public Transit Tax Credit. To improve the care and quality of life for those living in long-term care, Mangat said the government is encouraging operators to redevelop more than 30,000 beds. The Canadian Parvasi TORONTO: Under President Donald Trump, Indians view the US very positively but Canadians think unfavourably of America. A latest survey of 37 countries by Pew Research shows that 40 percent Indians view the US positively under President Trump. Only 9 percent Indians think negatively of the US even as 42 percent express no opinion. However, 51 per cent Canadians think negatively of the US under President Trump while about 43 percent view their neighbour to the South positively. The Canadian antipathy towards the US is the deepest in almost 35 years and it has all to Modi with Trump and his wife Melania at the White House do with President Trump. Even under President George W. Bush, who was very unpopular in Canada, 55 percent Canadians thought positively about the US. But when it comes to the American people, 65 percent Canadians think positively of them. About 56 percent Indians also view the American people positively. Interestingly, it is Sweden where 80 people think positively of the American people but only 10 percent approve of President Trump. Muslim countries Jordan (82 percent) and Turkey (79 percent) rank the highest in their dislike for the US under President Trump. At 84 percent, Vietnam is the country where the US is most liked under President Trump. Over 81 percent Israelis also view the US positively under Trump. In Mexico with which Trump wants to build a wall to stop illegal immigration, 95 percent people think negatively of the US and 90 percent Mexicans want no wall. As for Trump as a person, the survey shows that 92 per cent people think he is arrogant, 78 per cent think he is intolerant, and 72 per cent perceive him to be dangerous. Despite controversies, Peel Police chief Jennifer Evans gets 2-year extension The Canadian Parvasi MISSISSAUGA: Despite controversies and public opposition to her policing policies, Peel Regional Police chief Jennifer Evans will keep her job for two more years. Peel Police Services Board on Tuesday gave the green light to renew her contract for two more years till October 2019. In a Peel Police Services Board statement, its chairman Chair Amrik Singh Ahluwalia said, "After careful consideration and deliberation, the Board voted to accept Chief Evans’ request for a 2-year renewal of her employment." Ahluwalia added, "We look forward to working with Chief Evans for the next two years as we continue to modernize policing in Peel." Jennifer Evans, who has been the police chief since 2012, said she was "excited for the opportunity" to continue to lead Peel Regional Police for two more years. "I would like to thank all of our employees and the community for their unwavering support and dedication to our Service. Last October, community groups in Brampton mounted calls for the police chief to resign over the race-specific carding - also known as street checks. But Jennifer Evans defended the practice as an invaluable tool in policing even as data showed that black people were three times more likely to become victims of the policy. Chief Jennifer Evans had also turned down a request by Peel Police Services Board to stop the carding practice, saying that the board had no control over operational issues.
The International News Weekly July 01, 2017 | Toronto 17 Indo-Canadian Golf Association raises $151,000 for Trillium Health Partners Foundation TORONTO: The Indo-Canadian Golf Association (ICGA) raised $151,000 for the Trillium Health Partners Foundation at its 20th Annual Anniversary Charity Golf Tournament at the Glencarin Golf Club in Milton on June 20. Over 220 golfers from the Greater Toronto Area, the Niagara Falls, BC, the US, India, England and Australia took part in the event. The team of Jasbir Singh, Rocky Raikotia, Bob Gharyal and Daniel lifted the trophy and won the ICGA Canada Blue Jacket. At the end of the event, fireworks were displayed to celebrate Canada's 150 anniversary. Gian Paul, Communication Director of the Indo-Canadian Golf Association, added that the cheque for the raised funds was presented to Steve Hoscheit,President & CEO of the Trillium Health Partners Foundation. Speaking on the occasion, Hoscheitsaid that “working with our community, Trillium Health Partners Foundation is dedicated to raising the critical funds needed to address the highest priority needs of Trillium Health Partners— Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital, and Queensway Health Center—one of the largest community-based, academically affiliated, acute care facilities in Canada. Our intention is to achieve the highest quality of care that is easily accessible for our community, at the lowest cost. We are committed to creating an exceptional experience for everyone who walks through our doors.’’ He said $151,000 from the ICGA Canada would further boost efforts to extend health services for all. The money will be used for purchasing critical equipment for the cardiology wing, he said. Mr. RaiSahi, chairman and CEO of Morguard Corporation, and chairman and CEO of ClubLink Enterprises Limited, appreciated the services of ICGACanada and its members and extended his support for the future events of the organization. Mr. Mohinder Singh, chairman of ICGA, thanked all the players, sponsors and media outlets who supported the event and encouraged everyone to keep supporting future events and worthwhile causes. Formed in 1996, the Indo- Canadian Golf Association (ICGA Canada) is a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to serve the community by raising funds for local charities through annual golf tournaments across the Greater Toronto Area.
