What talent can you discover within Drawn to the Valley? 

All the artists in this year’s Open Studios event are 

looking forward to welcoming you. We are all used 

to seeing reproductions of art but there is something 

very different about original artwork and talking to 

the artist who produced it. If you haven’t visited an 

Open Studio before, here is a summary of what you 

might expect: 

What is the Open Studios event? 

There is no charge to visit the studios – artists are 

more than happy that you just come and look. They 

will of course be delighted if you want to buy 

their work! 

It is a chance to meet artists in their studios or 

exhibition spaces throughout the beautiful Tamar 

Valley. You can buy art direct from the artist and find 

out more about how and why they produce their 

work. Take time with your visits and if you want to 

know anything just ask the artist. 

Opening dates and times – these vary so please check 

the entry for each studio that you plan to visit – if in 

doubt, contact the artist before you travel. 

Travelling around the area – there is more 

information about travelling to and around the Tamar 

Valley on page 58.

Each entry in this Directory includes directions and 

there will be roadside signs and arrows, with our 

Drawn to the Valley logo, to lead you to each venue. 

Accessibility 

Please see individual artist’s details. Any queries 

please contact the artist direct. 

Payment 

Generally by cash or cheque but credit/debit cards 

are also accepted subject to availability. A deposit will 

usually secure a piece of art work for you. There are 

often cards and small items for sale. 

Safety 

If you visit a working studio there may be chemicals 

and tools, so you should take particular care 

yourselves and supervise children carefully.

FOREWORD 

Having spent the last 39 years living on the banks of the River Tamar, the 

most unique county boundary in England, I never cease to be amazed by its 

infinite variety and changing moods with the passing seasons. 

It is no wonder that the Tamar Valley, with its extraordinarily rich heritage 

of mining – silver, tin, lead, copper, arsenic – market gardening and farming, 

is officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From the 

early primroses and special varieties of gorgeous Tamar Valley daffodils, 

the mouthwatering strawberries and cherry orchards which clothe the 

river banks, to the myriad molluscs and crustaceans living on the edge of 

the reed beds, attracting wildfowl to the mudflats, the river is home to a 

fantastic range of flora and fauna. 

Where else would I choose to live? Nowhere. The colours of the seasons, 

the textures of the marshes and trees, the tidal ebb and flow of the 

river, which can be so gentle and yet sometimes so ferocious, are unlike 

anywhere else. It is not difficult to fully appreciate the artist’s desire to 

capture and celebrate the spirit and soul of the Tamar Valley. 

It has been a pleasure to watch Drawn to the Valley artists at work, 

gathering inspiration from the Pentillie Estate each season over the past few 

years. Their interpretations of our beautiful valley can be seen in some of 

the works shown at their annual Summer Exhibition and Open Studios. 

I wish all the artists involved in this year’s Open Studios all the best and I 

bid all the visitors welcome to enjoy our valley and the art it has inspired.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION 

TAVISTOCK TOWN HALL 

2 ND AUGUST TO 6 TH AUGUST 2017 

This summer, almost 100 artists from the Drawn to the Valley art collective 

in Devon and Cornwall will be exhibiting their work to the public at their 

major annual exhibition at Tavistock Town Hall on the 2nd to 6th August. 

It’s a chance for the public to meet some of the artists and purchase 

unique pieces of art from across multiple disciplines. From paintings and 

printmaking to sculptures and jewellery, all the pieces have one thing in 

common – they were made by artists living and working alongside the 

River Tamar. 

Drawn to the Valley group is an artist led initiative, membership is open 

to professional artists and craftspeople living and/or working in the Tamar 

Valley area. Drawn to the Valley was formed by the artists themselves 

over a decade ago, mainly as a support network, but also in order to 

promote the Tamar Valley Area, bringing the area of natural beauty to life 

through art. There are over 150 members of the group today. Numerous 

individuals in the group are renowned nationally and internationally for their 

art work across a range of diverse art media both 2D and 3D. 

Long term and new members alike continue to be inspired by each other’s 

work, and are encouraged in their efforts to continue to grow creatively.

My paintings are an expression of the experience of landscape: perhaps a walk 

in the woods or on a beach in the rain. I am also interested in the colours of 

disturbed landscapes found in, for example, old mine workings.

get in Cornwall especially around Prussia

The huge picture window and balcony afford

My work reflects my interest in the relationship

GETTING ABOUT THE TAMAR VALLEY 

Drawn to the Valley are keen to promote the use of 

sustainable transport. On this page you will find details 

of public transport which we would encourage you to 

use whenever possible to reach some of the venues. 

The Tamar Valley Line, run by First Great Western, 

is a scenic route between Plymouth and Gunnislake 

which also stops at Bere Alston and Calstock. 

There is also a train from Plymouth to Saltash. 

The Cremyll ferry is a charming foot ferry, near the 

Royal William Yard, which connects Plymouth to the 

Rame Peninsula, with a bus to Millbrook and Rame:

Our drawing days are chance to work en plein 

air, gain inspiration in beautiful and interesting 

locations, and importantly for those who so 

often work in isolation; a chance to discuss 

ideas and enjoy some creative company. The 

public also enjoy seeing us at work.

chatty and helpful,
