What talent can you discover within Drawn to the Valley? 

All the artists in this year’s Open Studios event are 

looking forward to welcoming you. We are all used 

to seeing reproductions of art but there is something 

very different about original artwork and talking to 

the artist who produced it. If you haven’t visited an 

Open Studio before, here is a summary of what you 

might expect: 

What is the Open Studios event? 

There is no charge to visit the studios – artists are 

more than happy that you just come and look. They 

will of course be delighted if you want to buy 

their work! 

It is a chance to meet artists in their studios or 

exhibition spaces throughout the beautiful Tamar 

Valley. You can buy art direct from the artist and find 

out more about how and why they produce their 

work. Take time with your visits and if you want to 

know anything just ask the artist. 

Opening dates and times – these vary so please check 

the entry for each studio that you plan to visit – if in 

doubt, contact the artist before you travel. 

Travelling around the area – there is more 

information about travelling to and around the Tamar 

Valley on page 58.

Each entry in this Directory includes directions and 

there will be roadside signs and arrows, with our 

Drawn to the Valley logo, to lead you to each venue. 

Accessibility 

Please see individual artist’s details. Any queries 

please contact the artist direct. 

Payment 

Generally by cash or cheque but credit/debit cards 

are also accepted subject to availability. A deposit will 

usually secure a piece of art work for you. There are 

often cards and small items for sale. 

Safety 

If you visit a working studio there may be chemicals 

and tools, so you should take particular care 

yourselves and supervise children carefully.

FOREWORD 

Being an artist can be an isolated business, often working alone in a studio at home. 

Drawn to the Valley was established to fill a need for networking and collaboration 

between artists, and this continues to be the primary aim of the collective, all of 

whose members live or work within a few miles of the river Tamar and its tributaries. 

Over the years the group has grown dramatically, and while only a small proportion 

of the members earn their living from their art, the standard of work produced by 

members, and their approach to their art, remains “professional.” Several of our 

members have been elected to prestigious societies, had work selected for national 

exhibitions, and won significant prizes for their work. 

As an organisation we are well recognised in Devon and Cornwall, but we also want 

to spread our wings, so last year we introduced the Valley and our Artists to the 

London scene, with a successful exhibition at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery in 

Pall Mall. 

Drawn to the Valley provides a mechanism for members to meet, share ideas, learn 

from each other, work collaboratively, and for those who wish to do so, to exhibit and 

sell their artwork. 

Open studios is the highlight of the Drawn to the Valley year where artists extend the 

networking to include members of the public. You can always be assured of a warm 

welcome at studios and other venues across our beautiful and inspiring part of the 

country. A celebration of Art towards the end of summer. Do come and visit us. 

As I approach the end of my three years as Chair of Drawn to the Valley, I feel deeply 

privileged to have been able to work with such a varied and talented group of people, 

and wish you all, paraphrasing the words of Robert Burns 

“Guid speed and furder to you all, 

Guid health, hale hands, and weather bonny.” 

In others words, a healthy, prosperous and 

talent filled future to Drawn to the Valley and 

all its members.

With many of our 150 artists presenting their work, the Tavistock Annual Summer 

Exhibition provides a wonderful display, showcasing the diversity of Drawn to the Valley; 

with oils, acrylics, watercolour, glass, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, digital art 

and much more. 

Visitors always find the exhibition to be inspiring and stimulating. 

As well as art on the walls there are browsers, prints and cards. A speciality of this 

exhibition is the mini art, which helps encourage buyers to purchase affordable and original 

local art.

in launching our exhibition with a fantastic private view evening (contact admin@

We have enjoyed many years showcasing our art at The Town Hall. However, for this year 

we move to the beautifully restored Butchers Hall, within the pannier market complex. On 

ground level and flooded with natural light, we are hoping to encourage even more visitors 

to be inspired by Drawn to the Valley Artists.

TORPOINT & RAME PENINSULA 

TERESA WICKSTEED – TIBETAN SINGING BOWLS 

During my Open Studios, I shall have a selection of my Tibetan Singing Bowls, ancient and 

modern, on display alongside my paintings, and individuals can experience these healing 

sounds, also have a go at trying to play a bowl, with my help and supervision. I can also 

answer queries about Sound Healing. I am open every day, see the directory for times.

KATE WILLIAMS – HAND WEAVING 

I am a cloth hand weaver working on mechanical looms in my studio at 

Mount Edgcumbe. I am increasingly seeking to push through woven cloth 

design into a freer kind of woven cloth sculpture – really pushing the 

boundaries of cloth woven on a hand loom. I also make lots of scarves!

Tavistock Parish Rooms Open Studio promises an inspiring experience this year. As well as all our nine artists being 

in attendance, there will be a programme of demonstrations and workshops. Throughout the week there will be 

demonstrations of spinning, weaving, mixed-media textile techniques, painting, pen and ink drawing and painting 

on fired clay. Gill and Andy Cairns from West Devon Art Workshops will be offering an exciting range of drop-in 

and bookable workshops. There will be two 3 hour sessions - pen and wash landscapes on Tuesday 27th August 

and Relief Assemblage on Friday 30th August, both in the afternoon. Booking essential for both. Willow and Tissue 

Hangings on Wednesday 28th August and mixed-media stitch on Thursday 29th August will be ‘drop in’ at 1.00 pm, 

2.00 pm or 3.00 pm. A vibrant and exciting week not to be missed!

Anything can capture my imagination as ideas for my art: this year’s work has been 

much influenced by pattern and shape in nature. I work mostly in acrylics, and also 

collages and clay. I’m drawn to abstraction rather than figurative work, because I 

like to find a different way of portraying what I see.

My paintings evolve in layers of paint, print and sometimes collage. This year I have 

acquired more detailed maps of 18th-century London to form the background layers, 

with the story telling letters of Turner in coloured layers on top. My intention was to 

make them look as if Turner himself had handwritten them on the canvas. From our 

studios we run workshops, life drawing, printmaking and residential courses all year, all 

information on our website.

myself through colour which never shines so brightly as in working with glass, but I also paint on 

canvas, paper and silk. In Earthborn I found an inspiring cooperation with John Rowe.

With Impressionism and the natural world as a constant inspiration, I create richly textured 

oil paintings. In February 2019 I won the Visitor’s Choice Award while exhibiting at the

housebound due to chronic disability, my wife has enabled my work to be exhibited at this event as part of the Drawn to the Valley group. 

10% of all sale profits will be donated to the charity, Invest in ME Research (IiMER). They are pioneering new biomedical research into 

the causes, diagnosis, treatment and potential cure for this debilitating disease that Roger has been disabled by for the last 6 years, to raise

Steve Crimlisk is a portrait artist based in Tavistock, Devon. Steve 

recognised his skill for drawing at a young age and has covered a range 

of subjects, predominately animals. A long-standing and much-loved 

subject for Steve and over time he has broadened the variety of his work. Living within 

a close proximity to the beauty of Dartmoor has lent itself greatly to the themes of 

creatures and wilderness. Steve uses charcoal and pencil in most of his work, capturing not

My work is an ongoing investigation into the human presence and how we react to each other 

and the landscape that surrounds us. I enjoy experimenting in many mediums and image making 

techniques whilst investigating the notion of merging abstract themes with figurative painting 

in a form of stylistic pluralism. Transience is the theme of my latest body of work. I will be 

finishing the large-scale mural in the hall during the open studio week, please feel free to drop

ABOUT US 

Drawn to the Valley provides a great network for artists, a way of keeping in 

touch and exhibiting work inspired by their passion for the beautiful Tamar 

Valley Area and beyond. 

Drawn to the Valley group is an artist led initiative, membership is open to 

professional artists and craftspeople living and/or working in the Tamar Valley 

area. Drawn to the Valley was formed by the artists themselves over 13 years 

ago, mainly as a support network, but also in order to promote the Tamar Valley 

Area, bringing the area of natural beauty to life through art. 

There are approximately 150 active members of the group today. Numerous 

individuals in the group are renowned nationally and internationally for their art 

work across a range of diverse art media both 2d and 3d. 

Long term and new members alike continue to be inspired by each other’s work, 

and are encouraged in their efforts to continue to grow creatively.

My inspiration comes mainly from the countryside in Devon and Cornwall, particularly 

in the Tamar Valley, which I translate through monoprints and collagraphs. I look to 

create an impression of a landscape with abstract and semi-abstract forms, carefully 

selecting simple colour fusions that give the senses a feel of space, light and vista.

I have always used my art as a way to express my personal feelings and emotions. 

My art is very expressive, intricate and spiritual. It is a form of release and a means 

of understanding of my life. I am influenced by nature, especially the beauty of trees, 

grass and plants. I work in a variety of media such as acrylic paint, pens, pencils, 

pastels and print (lino and etching), hoping to express my emotions through the use of 

colour and mark making – these are the key factors in the story of what is on display.

The Tamar Valley Line, run by First Great Western, 

is a scenic route between Plymouth and Gunnislake 

which also stops at Bere Alston and Calstock.

Royal William Yard, which connects Plymouth to the

“I originally made the lacy silver and teal pearl necklace for Clare 

to give her mother as a Christmas present. After Clare found her 

dress to wear to the Royal Arts Prize Private View, she realised 

that this necklace would match perfectly. When I heard that Clare 

was wearing the necklace, I made her some drop earrings, with 

hand forged silver ear wires and the same teal pearls. The whole 

outfit was stunning and suited Clare perfectly.”

client wanted a panel created so she could make storage for her 

campervan. The background fabric was chosen to tone with the 

upholstery. Jasper was created using applique and free motion

wanted me to paint his very busy kitchen (with Spanish

The other was from a couple who had a wonderful 

house in Looe with a view to die for. They sent me 

stunning images which made it very hard to decide from

DRAWN TO THE VALLEY DRAWING DAYS 

As a member of Drawn to the Valley you are invited to many activities 

throughout the year where we are brought together. One of which 

are our ‘Drawing Days’, these are held throughout the year at a variety 

of venues. The days are a chance for our members to meet up, work, 

share experiences, inspiration and often a few cups of coffee! 

Over the years many pieces of artwork from all genres have been 

created from the inspiration discovered at stunning locations such as 

Pentillie Castle and Estate, Cotehele and Buckland Abbey National 

Trust properties and more. Whether the work was created on the 

day itself, through a photo shoot or works explored in more detail 

from sketches, it is fascinating to see how every individual artist 

interprets the information they see. 

The importance as independent artists to meet up with fellow peers is 

an invaluable part of our support and growth as a creative community.
