explain its wealth.
Amid loud thumping of
desks by the Federal
and resolute Prime
Minister said he was not
going to resign and those
Sharif family to
challenge JIT
report in SC today
ISLAMABAD: Sharif
family will challenge Joint
Investigation Team (JIT)
Panama case report in
Supreme Court (SC) today
(Saturday).
Well placed sources
said that legal team led by
Khawaja Haris advocate
pointed out several flaws
in Panama JIT report and
the team made extensive
consultations with Sharif
family on this count.
The legal team assured
Sharif family their stance
will be presented in the
court in forceful manner
and the court will be
requested not to give any
early verdict on the report.
Sources said that the
legal team is of the view
that most of the allegations
levelled in JIT report are
based on assumptions
which have no legal standing
and the second thing is
that Prime Minister (PM)
Nawaz Sharif has no relevance
with Panama leaks.
said while chairing meeting
of the Federal Cabinet.
The cabinet reposed full
confidence in the leadership
of the prime minister and
endorsed his firm decision
not to step down.
Addressing the cabinet,
he asked: “Should I resign
on the demand of antidemocracy
forces? Why
should I resign and on what
basis? I was brought into
power by the mandate of
the people and only the people
have the mandate to
remove me.”
PM not resigning
despite proofs
ISLAMABAD: PTI
that Prime Minister Nawaz
Nawaz Sharif is willing to
betray nation and malign his
late father and children just to
remain in power despite all
loss of moral & legitimate
authority. He questioned that
how can nation's taxpayers
trust Nawaz Sharif, Dar &
their appointees like Hijazi
ECP to avoid such frivolous
JI warns govt
against proposed
increase in KE
multi-year tariff
SJA Jafri
KARACHI: Jamaat-e-
Islami (JI) Karachi chief
Engr. Hafiz Naeem-ur-
Rehman has warned of the
government that the party
would launch agitation if
the multi-year tariff of K-
Electric was increased.
In a strong wordy press
conference at JI Karachi
headquarters Idara Noor-e-
Haq on Friday evening, the
JI leader strictly condemned
to what he called sabotage of
the hearing.
He said that the JI was
refrained from expressing
the viewpoint of masses
under a designed agenda. He
said that what happened during
the NEPRAhearing, bolstered
our claim that the KE
administration has recruited
thugs and criminal elements
from various parties and
were using them for their
own interests.
Today, he maintained, the
NEPRA was hearing on
review of KE's multiyear tariff
for the period June 2016
to June 2023. He added that
if the authority increased the
tariff, it would be evident
that the high ups of NEPRA
are hand in glove with KE.
Speaking on the occasion,
Chief Minister Syed
without any interference of
its government, that’s why
there was no complaint of
explained the non-representation
tried to make voters,
but they didn’t try to make
to perform this duty,
According to rescue
The SBC asked Nawaz
Sharif through resolution to
tendering his resignation
from the National
court's proceedings will be
adopted to force Nawaz to
step down,? SBC decided.
The council was of the
view that two senior judges
of the apex court had
already disqualified Nawaz
as member of the National
Assembly and ordered his
de-notification. The
remaining three judges of
ordered for formation of
It also said that it believed
WAH: An amazing news item puzzled the
brain's normal thinking as it was reported
that Palestine, an only country worldwide
most war ravaged with destroyed infrastructure
since decades, was planning to hold -- yes, hold
your breathe -- a trade expo in Islamabad!
PALESTINE'S commercial exhibition deserves a
lot of congratulatory "Wah, Wah" considering that
India and Pakistan wars had crippled their
economies in a few days of fighting, while a large
Palestinian land was usurped by military aggressor
Israel bit by bit who hit and reduced Palestine into a
tiny land and a tiny Gaza strip in several battles and
wars fought.
BLAH refers for those countries like Pakistan as
well as other Arab states who watched as idle spectators,
while some paid only lip service without any
action. Useless diplomatic language could not,
however, support their unnecessarily high and tall
claims. That kind of hypocrisy remains overdue for
a change in reversal now. Palestine needs active
support, not verbal lambasting. What Palestine,
especially its Gaza part, got from Muslim world in
general and Arab world in particular was were highly
condemnable Blah, Blah, Blah.
FEW countries dared for any action: They can
within international law, where one part of Palestine
compromised and got some rights, though with
questionable obedience to unreasonable dictates of
big powers in some main respects. US superpower
with Jewish inroads and control over American
elections and life, supported Israel. Arab oil producing
and exporting countries who catered to capitalistic
machinery in US, Europe and elsewhere, did
most of their clients' bidding. Palestine Liberation
Organization Chief Yasser Arafat was supported by
Arabs as long when he did what Arab leaders
demanded. After that PLO chief, his followers and
Palestinians were shown out of Arab countries
when they refused to sacrifice their freedom fight
on Mideast and Western whims and pleasures.
Palestinian liberators under PLO/al-Fatah were ultimately
branded and introduced as terrorists due to
their violent bravado. Al-Fatah opted for going
along international diplomacy, won a UN seat and
was recognized as a country with related rights of
existence! Hamas faction and Gazans opted for noncompromise
with Israel and were deprived of their
legitimate rights to live as free people with deserved
international rights. US and Europe on the outward
for world diplomatic requirements fulfilled their
public announcement formalities by condemning
Israeli aggression and calling Zionist displacements
of Palestinians from West Bank as illegal. But did
not take any action against Israel, nor did they help
By Paul R Ehrlich
One should not need to be a scientist to know that
human population growth and the accompanying
increase in human consumption are the root
cause of the sixth mass extinction we’re currently seeing.
All you need to know is that every living being has
evolved to have a set of habitat requirements.
An organism can’t live where the temperature is too
hot or too cold. If it lives in water, it requires not only an
appropriate temperature range, but also appropriate salinity,
acidity and other chemical characteristics. If it is a
butterfly, it must have access to plants suitable for its
caterpillars to eat.Alion requires plant-eaters to catch and
devour. A tree needs a certain amount of sunlight and
access to soil nutrients and water. A falciparum malaria
parasite can’t survive and reproduce without Anopheles
mosquitos in its habitat and a human bloodstream to
infest.
The human population has grown so large that roughly
40 per cent of the Earth’s land surface is now farmed
to feed people — and none too well at that. Largely due
to persistent problems with distribution, almost 800 million
people go to bed hungry, and between one and two
billion suffer from malnutrition. As a consequence of its
booming population, Homo Sapiens has taken much of
the most fertile land to grow plants for its own consumption.
But guess what? That cropland is generally not rich
in food plants suitable for the caterpillars of the 15,000
butterfly species with which we share the planet. Few
butterflies require the wheat, corn or rice on which
humans largely depend. From the viewpoint of most of
the Earth’s wildlife, farming can be viewed as “habitat
destruction”. And, unsurprisingly, few species of wildlife
have evolved to live on highways, or in strip malls, office
buildings, kitchens or sewers — unless you count
Norway rats, house mice, European starlings and
German roaches. Virtually everything humanity constructs
provides an example of habitat destruction.
The more people there are, the more products of
nature they demand to meet their needs and wants: timber,
seafood, meat, gas, oil, metal ores, rare earths and
OPINION
Palestinians as champions of human liberties.
STATE-TERROR of Israel was therefore not
properly made known to the world for its untold
miseries caused against Palestinians brutally displaced
from their own land or in legal purchases,
which meant almost a similar homeless fate and
destiny, and among most tortuous life for
Palestinian survivors. Arab world can change all
that with their finance, manpower, economic assistance,
diplomatic dialogues, a strong ceasefire with
Arab world's all out support to Palestine, especially
in Gaza. They did not. They still can.
IRAN, with centuries of history as having most
humble people famous for their selfless hospitality
to the world and among richest kingly and national
culture of civil and human behavior, its universities
a having been a cradle of civilization for centuries
worldwide, were misrepresented by world media as
being terrorists, while Iranians were so alien to terrorism.
However, Iranian revolutionary leader
Imam Khomeini and Islamic democracy were
undiplomatically true and not hypocritical liars in
dealing with outside world. That should have made
a positive difference in favor of Iran but it backfired
and a world turned against Iran itself, instead of
benefiting Iran. That showed the kind of politics a
topsy turvey world without principles engage in, a
highly questionable approach that can change for
better. Iran, an anti US antagonist and enemy of
Israel as well as supporter of Palestinian cause
despite everything, and another country namely
Israeli-hit Lebanon were different as they allied
with Gaza. Even Qatar offered multi million dollar
financial help to Gazans who, instead of choosing
economic development, had families of martyrs
who opted to fire hundreds of rockets and small
missiles on Israel after the Jews staged as many hits
on Palestine.
ARAB world, however, did not help as it could
or should have their fellow Palestinian brethren living
a life of fear and dread of daily Israeli gunfire,
arrests, imprisoning, torture and deaths in custody
of leaders and followers of Gaza and Hamas, who
barely have basic living provisions or facilities, as
it's encircled by both Muslim and Israeli countries,
who fought several wars against PLO's breakaway
faction of Hamas in Palestine. Gaza tunnels of shelter
for women and children from bombing, used for
"smuggling" food and essential products as all
routes were closed where neither a Gazan could
leave their own land nor anyone could come into
Gaza. Egypt and Israel bombed those tunnels.
Hamas also used those tunnels for smuggling arms,
and built inroads into Israel, where Palestinians
staged suicidal missions.
What’s causing the sixth
mass extinction?
It’s simple. It’s us. The more people there are, the more habitats we destroy.
Human civilisation can only survive if the population begins to shrink
rare animals to eat or to use for medicinal purposes.
Human demands cause both habitat destruction and outright
extermination of wildlife. So when you watch the
expansion of the human enterprise; when you see buildings
springing up; when you settle down to dinner at
home or in a restaurant; you are observing (and often participating
in) the sixth mass extinction.
The expanding human population not only outright
destroys habitats, it also alters them to the detriment of
wildlife (and often people themselves). The more people
there are, the more greenhouse gases flow into the atmosphere,
and the greater the impacts on wildlife that require
specific temperature ranges.
And the more people there are, the more cities, roads,
farm fields, fences and other barriers preventing wildlife
from moving to areas of more favourable temperature or
humidity in a rapidly changing climate. Less recognised,
but perhaps even more dangerous to both people and
wildlife, is the increasing toxification of the entire planet
with synthetic chemicals. Growing populations want
myriad more items of plastic that often leak toxic chemicals:
more cosmetics, cleansing compounds, pesticides,
herbicides, preservatives and industrial chemicals. Many
of these novel chemicals mimic natural hormones, and in
tiny quantities can alter the development of animals or
human children, with potentially catastrophic consequences. As
with climate disruption, this is one more case
of human overpopulation threatening civilisation.
So we don’t really need the evidence meticulously
gathered and analysed by the scientific community showing
the unusual and accelerating extermination of wildlife
populations — and ultimately, species — to know that
human population growth is a major and growing driver
of the sixth mass extinction, just as it is with the related
accelerating climate disruption. It will take a long time to
humanely stop that growth and start the gradual shrinkage
of the human population that is required if civilisation
is to persist.
All the more reason we should have started a half
century ago, when the problem first came to public
attention.
President Donald Trump’s
temporary ban on travelers
from six Muslim-majority
countries cannot stop
grandparents and other relatives
of United States citizens
from entering the
country, a U.S. judge said
on Friday.
The ruling by U.S.
District Judge Derrick
Watson in Honolulu also
opens the door for more
refugees and deals Trump a
fresh courtroom defeat in a
long back-and-forth over an
executive order that has
gone all the way up to the
U.S. Supreme Court.
The state of Hawaii had
asked Watson to narrowly
interpret a Supreme Court
ruling that revived parts of
Trump’s March 6 executive
order banning travelers
from Iran, Libya, Somalia,
Sudan, Syria and Yemen for
90 days, as well as refugees
for 120 days.
The Supreme Court last
month said the ban could
take effect, but that anyone
from the six countries with
a "bona fide relationship" to
a U.S. person or entity
could not be barred.
The Trump administration
then interpreted that
opinion to allow spouses,
parents, children, fiancés
and siblings into the country,
but barred grandparents
and other family members,
in a measure Trump called
necessary to prevent
attacks.
Watson harshly criticized
the government’s
definition of close family
relations as "the antithesis
of common sense" in a ruling
that changes the way
A few hundred Islamic
State insurgents swept into
Mosul three years ago,
imposed a reign of terror
after the Iraqi army collapsed
and declared a
caliphate spanning Iraqi and
Syrian territory seized in a
shock offensive.
The victory of U.S.-
backed Iraq forces in Mosul
marked the biggest defeat
for Islamic State, which is
under siege in the eastern
Syrian city of Raqqa, its
operational base.
Even though the Sunni
Muslim group's caliphate is
now crumbling, it is expected
to revert to an insurgency
and keep carrying out
the ban can now be implemented.
"Common sense, for
instance, dictates that close
family members be defined
to include grandparents.
Indeed, grandparents are
DELHI:
Unfortunately, Salman Khan
has earned a reputation for
making statements which
become national news for all
the wrong reasons.
More often than not, he
finds himself at the centre
of controversy. However,
we find it hard to blame him
considering he is always
subjected to media glare.
When asked by an
Indian newspaper whether
he finds the constant attention
and misinterpretation
of his statements irksome,
the Dabbang star said,
"Everyone shares their
opinion but when somebody
like me says something,
it’s twisted around.
Then, a [TV] show runs
[the comment], and it gets
good TRPs. But if it’s their
business, let them do it. The
other option for me is to
just stop talking. I hate
doing interviews, and I get
bored of them but I do them
because if a fan of mine
picks up a newspaper or a
magazine; or watches a TV
channel, he should know
that a certain film of mine
is up for release. That’s all."
The 51-year-old star
also stated that before the
release of his film Jaan-E-
Mann alongside Preity
Zinta and Akshay Kumar in
2006, he never even
stepped out the house for
interviews and promotion
for his films.
“When did I do any publicity
for any film? The
films would still run and
became big hits. But now
that a precedent [of doing
interviews] has set in, so
it’s going on. Now, if I go
on a TV show (for promotions),
it feels good if their
TRPs get boosted. Also,
through that show, my fans
will get to see me at home
My comments always create
journalists want a reaction
about something because
either their bosses have
asked them for that or they
want to make a name for
themselves. But that’s
wrong journalism, which I
don’t appreciate at all”, the
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan
Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan agree
to bolster ties in diverse field
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan
and Kyrgyzstan have agreed
to increase bilateral and
trade relations.
The understanding came
at a meeting between
Minister for Climate Change
Zahid Hamid and Kyrgyz
Ambassador Erik
Beishembievpaid here on
Friday. The minister said
Pakistan will participate in
Leopard Conservation
Summit scheduled to be
held in Kyrgyzstan next
month.
He said the government
is taking all possible measurers
for conservation of Snow
Leopard. The Ambassador
stressed the need for enhancing
trade relations between
the two countries.
PSX closes on positive
note, adds 554 points
Jawad said Pakistan as a
nation is lenient when it
comes to the value of water
management – whether for
drinking, farming, controlling
floods, improving environment
or generating cheap
power.
“Despite being potentially
the richest nation in the
subcontinent, the country,
since independence, had
been unable to protect water
in its river channels. This led
the neighbours to overstep
their bounds, sparking disputes
in an already heated
arena,” he said.
“We are a strange agrarian
country that has no interest
in protecting the backbone
of our economy and
has not been able to build
mega dams for 41 years
now.”
According to FPCCI
Official, Pakistan is generating
just half a dollar from
one cubic metre of water.
Compare that to the world
average of $8. In some
cases, such as that of Japan,
the number inflates to an
incredible $30.
Pakistan should have at
least 200 small, medium
and mega dams, unfortunately
it only has 61, out of
which only two are mega
dams, he said.
Oil prices dip on high supplies,
improving industry efficiency
SINGAPORE: Oil markets
dipped on Friday, pulled down by
high fuel inventories and improving
industry efficiency, but were still on
track for a solid weekly gain.
Brent crude futures, the international
benchmark for oil prices, were
down 8 cents, or 0.2 percent, at
$48.34 per barrel at 0151 GMT, but
up 3.5 percent for the week.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate
(WTI) crude futures were at $45.98
per barrel, down 10 cents, or 0.2 percent,
but up around 4 percent for the
week. Crude prices are around levels
in late November last year, when a
group of oil producers including
Russia and Organization of the
Petroleum Exporting Countries
(OPEC) pledged to withhold around
1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) of
production between January this
year and March 2018 in order to
tighten the market.
Oil analysts at research and brokerage
firm Sanford C. Bernstein
said that global oil stocks remain
high. "For the first half of 2017,
OECD inventories are likely to finish
higher, rather than lower... The
most plausible explanation is that
OPEC compliance has been not as
high as has been suggested,"
Bernstein said.
"OPEC will have to cut deeper
and for longer if it wants to eliminate
the inventory overhang and prices to
rise," Bernstein said.
It added that the upside for oil
prices looked limited even if OPEC
took more action due to high U.S.
Garbine Muguruza happy to
represent Spain in Wimbledon final
LONDON: Garbine
Muguruza wasn't even a
year old when Conchita
Martinez defeated a 37-
year-old Martina
Navratilova to become the
first Spanish woman to win
Wimbledon.
Twenty-three years later,
Muguruza will get her second
bite to finally end
Spain's long wait for a second
female champion. On
Saturday, when she walks
onto the Centre Court grass
and past the famous
Rosewater dish, adorned
with its many mythological
figures, there will be a
familiar face looking on
from her box.
Martinez, Spain's Fed
Cup captain, has been
Muguruza's temporary
coach and adviser in
London, and her presence is
helping piece things together
again. Just last month,
Muguruza left her press
conference at Roland
Garros in tears after relinquishing
the crown she had
won a year earlier.
The pain did not last.
Muguruza is into her second
Wimbledon final. She
was runner-up to Serena
Williams here two years
ago. Now the woman
standing between
Muguruza and a second
major title is another
Williams, five-time
Wimbledon champion
Venus, who, at 37, is the
oldest Grand Slam finalist
since Navratilova, also 37,
beat Martinez in that 1994
final. Muguruza, by her
own admission, has not
made drastic changes to
her game and remains
adamant that hard work is
the key to her revival.
Pollock fears
for South
Africa's future
LONDON: South
Africa great Graeme
Pollock told AFP the
Proteas will have to
accept being a "middle of
the road" Test side at best
if they stick with racial
transformation as a key
component of selection.
Transformation is
designed to cope with the
legacy of apartheid, when
largely only white players
such as Pollock, one of
the greatest batsmen in
cricket history, were
allowed to play for official
South Africa sides.
Pollock accepts players
of his era could have
done more to help their
non-white counterparts,
but is concerned the balance
has now swung too
far in the opposite direction
after South Africa
"got it right when Graeme
Smith was captain" (from
2003 to his retirement in
2014).
South Africa face
England in the second
Test at Trent Bridge 1-0
down in a four-match
series after a crushing
211-run defeat inside four
days at Lord's last week.
Pollock believes political
reasons are undermining
South Africa's longterm
competitiveness as a
Test nation.
accompanied by a lawyer
during the hearings, was
cross questioned by the
PCB's lawyer on July 13,
followed by Sharjeel's
lawyer the following day.
Shaigan Ijaz, Sharjeel's
lawyer, completed the
hearing amicably but
raised an objection against
Ephgrave. He told the
media that during the cross
examination, the NCA
official confirmed he had
been in touch with PCB
officials. "In this scenario,
the independent court witness
isn't independent as
he has been involved in the
case as a party," he said
after the hearing while
talking to media. However,
he hasn't lodged any complaint
or application
against Ephgrave before
the tribunal.
Cricket Australia chief
attacks 'reckless'
players' union
Sports Reporter
KARACHI: Cricket
Australia chairman David
Peever Thursday went on
the attack over suggestions
he is running an
"extreme" industrial relations
agenda, slamming
the players' union for
"reckless" tactics in a
damaging pay dispute.
Peever claimed the
Australian Cricketers'
Association was threatening
to drive away commercial
sponsors, damage
the prospects of broadcast
partners and lock up player
intellectual property
rights into its own business
ventures. Writing an
opinion piece in The
Australian newspaper, he
said that CA's board had
been insulted and disrespected
in the ugly spat
between the governing
body and players.
"CA has put what in
any normal circumstances
would be regarded as a
very generous offer,"
Peever said.
"The ACA has
responded by not only
rejecting that proposal
(and recent concessions)
out of hand, but by
launching a campaign of
such sustained ferocity
that anyone could be forgiven
for thinking CA was
proposing the reintroduction
of slavery rather than
healthy pay rises.
have denounced the
Thursday.
Call for the march was
Farooq and Muhammad
Yasin Malik to pay tributes
to the martyrs of 13th July
1931 on their martyrdom
anniversary. Indian police
arrested Syed Ali Gilani and
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on
Thursday when they tried to
lead the march towards
Naqshband Sahib where
these martyrs remain buried.
Yasin Malik was already
under illegal detention at
Srinagar Central Jail.
The APHC Chairman,
Syed Ali Gilani, in a statement
while paying tributes to
the martyrs of July 13 said
that entire Kashmir had been
turned into a garrison and
there were strict curfew and
restrictions in downtown
Srinagar and other areas. He
said that the military
approach of the Indian
authorities was highly condemnable.
He also condemned
the recent attack on
Amarnath yatris.
The Chairman of
Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz
Umar Farooq, in a statement
asked the puppet regime that
how long it would continue
the policy of restrictions and
repression against the
Kashmiri people and resistance
leadership. “Tyranny
and oppression have touched
heights in Kashmir and all
rights and liberties of people
have disappeared.
Repeatedly, Jamia Masjid
Srinagar is locked down.
Curfew and restrictions are
imposed in areas around it,”
he said.
The Mirwaiz said that
Kashmir had been turned
into a big jail and its inhabitants
into prisoners. He said
that how long Kashmiris
would be made to pay and
suffer for demanding their
right to self-determination.
Senior APHC leader,
Agha Syed Hassan Al-
MoosviAl-Safvi, in his statement
in Srinagar, condemning
the arrest and detention
of resistance leaders on the
Martyrs Day said, the martyrs
are the heroes of
Kashmiri people and barring
the masses from offering
tributes to the martyrs proves
the frustration of the puppet
authorities. He said that pro-
ISLAMABAD: If you
made plans to watch
Pakistan’s first ever superhero
film, Project Ghazi,
over the weekend then we
have some bad news for
you. The film, which was
scheduled to release across
cinemas on July 14, has
pushed forward its release
to an unannounced date.
Following its premiere at
Nueplex Cinema, Karachi
on Thursday night, Project
Ghazi team updated their
Facebook page and
informed their fans of the
delay.
The post read, “It is with
a heavy heart that we are
making the announcement
that Project Ghazi's release
date has been postponed.
Jarobi area near the Pak-
Afghan border, says an
Inter-Services Public
Relations press release.
At least two soldiers
sustained injuries in
exchange of fire with terrorists.
The injured were
rushed to CMH for medical
treatment.
We understand that this was
a highly anticipated movie,
but films of this magnitude
require extensive technical
work and hence to do justice
to this film genre, we
have decided to delay the
release from July 14, 2017.
The new release date
will be announced soon.”
Reports suggest that the
decision to postpone
movie’s release was taken
after the movie received a
negative response on its
premiere. The movie
screening suffered from
technical, sound and dubbing
issues along with mismanagement.
It was even mentioned
that audiences and movie
stars left the cinema after
According to sources,
one terrorist was killed in
exchange of fire, while the
second one blew himself
up during the shootout.
Meanwhile, the
Pakistani Security Forces
have cordoned-off the
area and started search
operation after the incident.
