WAH: An amazing news item puzzled the
brain's normal thinking as it was reported
that Palestine, an only country worldwide
most war ravaged with destroyed infrastructure
since decades, was planning to hold -- yes, hold
your breathe -- a trade expo in Islamabad!
PALESTINE'S commercial exhibition deserves a
lot of congratulatory "Wah, Wah" considering that
India and Pakistan wars had crippled their
economies in a few days of fighting, while a large
Palestinian land was usurped by military aggressor
Israel bit by bit who hit and reduced Palestine into a
tiny land and a tiny Gaza strip in several battles and
wars fought.
BLAH refers for those countries like Pakistan as
well as other Arab states who watched as idle spectators,
while some paid only lip service without any
action. Useless diplomatic language could not,
however, support their unnecessarily high and tall
claims. That kind of hypocrisy remains overdue for
a change in reversal now. Palestine needs active
support, not verbal lambasting. What Palestine,
especially its Gaza part, got from Muslim world in
general and Arab world in particular was were highly
condemnable Blah, Blah, Blah.
FEW countries dared for any action: They can
within international law, where one part of Palestine
compromised and got some rights, though with
questionable obedience to unreasonable dictates of
big powers in some main respects. US superpower
with Jewish inroads and control over American
elections and life, supported Israel. Arab oil producing
and exporting countries who catered to capitalistic
machinery in US, Europe and elsewhere, did
most of their clients' bidding. Palestine Liberation
Organization Chief Yasser Arafat was supported by
Arabs as long when he did what Arab leaders
demanded. After that PLO chief, his followers and
Palestinians were shown out of Arab countries
when they refused to sacrifice their freedom fight
on Mideast and Western whims and pleasures.
Palestinian liberators under PLO/al-Fatah were ultimately
branded and introduced as terrorists due to
their violent bravado. Al-Fatah opted for going
along international diplomacy, won a UN seat and
was recognized as a country with related rights of
existence! Hamas faction and Gazans opted for noncompromise
with Israel and were deprived of their
legitimate rights to live as free people with deserved
international rights. US and Europe on the outward
for world diplomatic requirements fulfilled their
public announcement formalities by condemning
Israeli aggression and calling Zionist displacements
of Palestinians from West Bank as illegal. But did
not take any action against Israel, nor did they help
By Paul R Ehrlich
One should not need to be a scientist to know that
human population growth and the accompanying
increase in human consumption are the root
cause of the sixth mass extinction we’re currently seeing.
All you need to know is that every living being has
evolved to have a set of habitat requirements.
An organism can’t live where the temperature is too
hot or too cold. If it lives in water, it requires not only an
appropriate temperature range, but also appropriate salinity,
acidity and other chemical characteristics. If it is a
butterfly, it must have access to plants suitable for its
caterpillars to eat.Alion requires plant-eaters to catch and
devour. A tree needs a certain amount of sunlight and
access to soil nutrients and water. A falciparum malaria
parasite can’t survive and reproduce without Anopheles
mosquitos in its habitat and a human bloodstream to
infest.
The human population has grown so large that roughly
40 per cent of the Earth’s land surface is now farmed
to feed people — and none too well at that. Largely due
to persistent problems with distribution, almost 800 million
people go to bed hungry, and between one and two
billion suffer from malnutrition. As a consequence of its
booming population, Homo Sapiens has taken much of
the most fertile land to grow plants for its own consumption.
But guess what? That cropland is generally not rich
in food plants suitable for the caterpillars of the 15,000
butterfly species with which we share the planet. Few
butterflies require the wheat, corn or rice on which
humans largely depend. From the viewpoint of most of
the Earth’s wildlife, farming can be viewed as “habitat
destruction”. And, unsurprisingly, few species of wildlife
have evolved to live on highways, or in strip malls, office
buildings, kitchens or sewers — unless you count
Norway rats, house mice, European starlings and
German roaches. Virtually everything humanity constructs
provides an example of habitat destruction.
The more people there are, the more products of
nature they demand to meet their needs and wants: timber,
seafood, meat, gas, oil, metal ores, rare earths and
Wah And Blah
OPINION
Palestinians as champions of human liberties.
STATE-TERROR of Israel was therefore not
properly made known to the world for its untold
miseries caused against Palestinians brutally displaced
from their own land or in legal purchases,
which meant almost a similar homeless fate and
destiny, and among most tortuous life for
Palestinian survivors. Arab world can change all
that with their finance, manpower, economic assistance,
diplomatic dialogues, a strong ceasefire with
Arab world's all out support to Palestine, especially
in Gaza. They did not. They still can.
IRAN, with centuries of history as having most
humble people famous for their selfless hospitality
to the world and among richest kingly and national
culture of civil and human behavior, its universities
a having been a cradle of civilization for centuries
worldwide, were misrepresented by world media as
being terrorists, while Iranians were so alien to terrorism.
However, Iranian revolutionary leader
Imam Khomeini and Islamic democracy were
undiplomatically true and not hypocritical liars in
dealing with outside world. That should have made
a positive difference in favor of Iran but it backfired
and a world turned against Iran itself, instead of
benefiting Iran. That showed the kind of politics a
topsy turvey world without principles engage in, a
highly questionable approach that can change for
better. Iran, an anti US antagonist and enemy of
Israel as well as supporter of Palestinian cause
despite everything, and another country namely
Israeli-hit Lebanon were different as they allied
with Gaza. Even Qatar offered multi million dollar
financial help to Gazans who, instead of choosing
economic development, had families of martyrs
who opted to fire hundreds of rockets and small
missiles on Israel after the Jews staged as many hits
on Palestine.
ARAB world, however, did not help as it could
or should have their fellow Palestinian brethren living
a life of fear and dread of daily Israeli gunfire,
arrests, imprisoning, torture and deaths in custody
of leaders and followers of Gaza and Hamas, who
barely have basic living provisions or facilities, as
it's encircled by both Muslim and Israeli countries,
who fought several wars against PLO's breakaway
faction of Hamas in Palestine. Gaza tunnels of shelter
for women and children from bombing, used for
"smuggling" food and essential products as all
routes were closed where neither a Gazan could
leave their own land nor anyone could come into
Gaza. Egypt and Israel bombed those tunnels.
Hamas also used those tunnels for smuggling arms,
and built inroads into Israel, where Palestinians
staged suicidal missions.
What’s causing the sixth
mass extinction?
It’s simple. It’s us. The more people there are, the more habitats we destroy.
Human civilisation can only survive if the population begins to shrink
rare animals to eat or to use for medicinal purposes.
Human demands cause both habitat destruction and outright
extermination of wildlife. So when you watch the
expansion of the human enterprise; when you see buildings
springing up; when you settle down to dinner at
home or in a restaurant; you are observing (and often participating
in) the sixth mass extinction.
The expanding human population not only outright
destroys habitats, it also alters them to the detriment of
wildlife (and often people themselves). The more people
there are, the more greenhouse gases flow into the atmosphere,
and the greater the impacts on wildlife that require
specific temperature ranges.
And the more people there are, the more cities, roads,
farm fields, fences and other barriers preventing wildlife
from moving to areas of more favourable temperature or
humidity in a rapidly changing climate. Less recognised,
but perhaps even more dangerous to both people and
wildlife, is the increasing toxification of the entire planet
with synthetic chemicals. Growing populations want
myriad more items of plastic that often leak toxic chemicals:
more cosmetics, cleansing compounds, pesticides,
herbicides, preservatives and industrial chemicals. Many
of these novel chemicals mimic natural hormones, and in
tiny quantities can alter the development of animals or
human children, with potentially catastrophic consequences. As
with climate disruption, this is one more case
of human overpopulation threatening civilisation.
So we don’t really need the evidence meticulously
gathered and analysed by the scientific community showing
the unusual and accelerating extermination of wildlife
populations — and ultimately, species — to know that
human population growth is a major and growing driver
of the sixth mass extinction, just as it is with the related
accelerating climate disruption. It will take a long time to
humanely stop that growth and start the gradual shrinkage
of the human population that is required if civilisation
is to persist.
All the more reason we should have started a half
century ago, when the problem first came to public
attention.
