J igging is lots of fun and is the current “in thing” 

in our region, with more and more anglers picking 

up the sport. That said, we see a lot more jigging 

tackle in stores these days compared to a few years 

ago. One of these is the Viper Perseus Coastal 

Game rod.

Lightweight Fighter 

The Viper Perseus Coastal Game is a lightweight 

and very well balanced rod built on a 24 ton graphite 

blank. Pick up the rod and put on a reel, and at 

a horizontal position the weight disperses throughout 

the rod making it feel lighter.

When it comes to components, the Viper Perseus 

Coastal Game rod comes with standard reel seats, 

standard guides, and quality EVA handles; keeping 

the prices within the lower end of the spectrum 

thus allowing anglers to upgrade as and when 

they want to.

The Viper Perseus Coastal Game rod is a rod 

made for light jigging. It is rated at PE 0.8-2.0 

and has a recommended max jig weight of 60g. 

Being 6’1” in length, it can cast pretty well too, 

shooting our baits to very good distances.

Ground Zero 

To test the Viper Perseus Coastal Game rod we 

took it to the new Natural Exotic Pond in Behrang, 

the new home of the hard fighting gladiators such 

as the Mekong catfish, Amazon redtail catfish, Siamese 

catfish, etc.

Casting is certainly not an issue as we got our 

baits to where the gladiators sit back and wait for 

a fight. When the fights broke out, they were intense. 

The gladiators knew where the snags were 

(underwater pipes) and we had to force them out 

and away from the danger zone. The Perseus had 

no issues doing so.

The Perseus has enough power in its 

backbone to turn the heads of these 

gladiators and manage every battle 

well. We subdued every gladiator that 

took our baits and gladly returned them 

back to their homes to fight more battles.

The Viper Perseus Coastal Game rod is a 

very good rod and priced at a very attractive 

price range. It is a very capable rod landed 

hard fighting fishes without issues, even high 

drag settings. It feels like a higher end rod as 

it lightweight, well balanced, and has a good 

feel.

I have for many years enjoyed ultra light tackle 

fishing and every now and then I indulge in it. I 

often go looking for some ultralight fishing tackle 

to play with. I recently got to test Abu Garcia’s 

new ultra light rod; the Axecutor.

Lightweight 

Rod

The Abu Garcia Axecutor is a light weight 

rod that looks good coming in black and gold 

cosmetics that gives it a sporty looks especially 

with the carbon fibre section. It comes 

with a 24 ton graphite blank that gives it a 

more forgiving flex that an ultra light tackle 

rod needs providing needed absorption especially 

when fishes make a sudden dash.

Field Test 

To field test the Axecutor we took it to the barramundi 

pond in Jugra. The barramundis in 

this ponds fight well although not as powerful 

as those in the wild and they have open up 

hooks (light tackle hooks). This make them 

ideal test subjects to test the Axecutor on.

Casting Ability 

The Axecutor casts well and with confidence; 

not wobbling during the cast. It has a tip that 

gives a pretty good flick, easily shooting my 

1 inch grubs to very good distances allowing 

me to cover more area thus increasing my 

chances of attracting a fish to bite. 

Fish Management 

The Axecutor handles very well. Being an ultra 

light tackle rod it does not come with a 

stiff backbone but the Axecutor certainly has 

enough power to manage the battles here 

without losing any fish. Every battle was well 

fought with plenty of ultra light tackle fun.

Barramundis are fun to play with on ultra light tackle.

F ishing lines are super important and 

all anglers want lines that are capable 

and able to improve their chances of 

catching fish by allowing for better sensitivity, 

better break strength, and lower 

diameter. A line that meets all these criteria 

is braid. We recently got to test out 

the new GT Zero Air PE Braid.

Good Castability 

The GT Zero Air PE Braid is a pretty 

smooth line and being smooth allows 

it to easily glide through the guides 

of the fishing rod with low amounts 

of friction. This is probably due to the 

Teflon coating on the line that also 

acts as a protective coat. This translates 

to improved casting distances 

of which means that one covers more 

ground (or water) with every cast.

We recently took the GT Zero Air PE Braid 

to the new Natural Exotic Pond in Tanjung 

Malim, Perak; testing them against 

the hard fighting gladiators that lie await 

in these newly built arena.

The GT Zero Air PE Braid certainly casts 

pretty well sending our baits (fish meat) 

towards the area where the gladiators 

were hiding out. Within minutes our 

fishing rod took a bow signalling that a 

gladiator has taken the bait. 

With the drag set high, we started the 

first few fights using a “tug of war” technique 

where we the battles ensued using 

brute force against brute force. Despite 

high pressured fights the line stood its 

ground landing every fish that took the 

bait.

Conclusion 

With many wins and plenty of photos, we had a satisfying 

and successful field test. There was zero tackle 

failure and as far as the GT Zero Air PE Braid goes, it 

performed very well. Good knot strength, smooth, easy 

to cast with, and strong.

H ere’s some news for those into light jigging. 

Abu Garcia recently launched the new Abu Garcia 

Salty Stage KR-X Light Jigging rod. I managed to 

take a look at the 3 piece model and that got me 

really excited. In all honesty I have not fished with 

it yet but it feels really good.

rod with carbon fibre reel seat nuts, metallic light blue 

ring washers, carbon X wrapped blank, and nicely contoured 

EVA grips. All these on a black base adds to the

feel of the blank via am exposed section at the bottom providing 

contact for the angler and the rod. Coming with a

adding better sensitivity to the mix.

Conclusion 

While I personally have not fished with 

the Abu Garcia Salty Stage KR-X , all I 

can say now is that it has already impressed 

me with the way it looks and 

more importantly, feels in my hands being 

lightweight, well balanced, and with 

an ergonomic grip that provides for a 

comfortable and confident grip. Now, I 

am left with one issue. I want this rod so 

badly that sleep has been eluding me. 

It will be soon that I get my hands on

Summary 

I personally find the Abu Garcia Silver Max spinning reel 

to be a good performer. It also does not burn a hole in 

one’s pocket. Definitely a good reel for ultra light fishing. 

I foresee more fun to come.

W hen it comes to fishing, we anglers 

want to catch lots of fish; enjoying as many 

hard fighting battles as possible. When 

it comes to fishing in commercial fishing 

ponds, the Natural Exotic Fish Fishing 

(more fondly known as Natural Exotic 

Pond) Pond is one of those ponds where 

one gets to fight fish after fish and go home 

with slightly sore muscles and a big grin.

Location 

When friends want to go fishing (especially 

those from overseas) I normally 

take them to the Natural Exotic Pond 

and there have never been a single 

complain. It has also been one of our 

usual test labs. The pond was then in 

Rawang, Selangor. It has since closed 

and moved to Behrang in Perak.

Concrete Pond 

The new Natural Exotic Pond is made of concrete with a 

long fishing area in the middle of the pond. This fishing 

area is shaded with plenty of place to sit. Rod holders 

are built into the floor since metal type rod holders can 

no longer be used. There are also toilets and taps nearby 

making it more convenient for anglers.

Food Outlets 

As with the previous 

place; there is a food outlet 

there too. It is above 

the fishing area. Food can 

also be delivered to anglers 

at the fishing area 

since most anglers prefer 

to eat and drink where 

they fish.

Fish 

Species 

There are plenty of fishes in 

the pond and they will readily 

take one’s bait if one uses 

baits that they are open to 

taking at the time. Some of 

the hard fighting fish species 

that call this place home are 

Mekong catfish (plabuk), Siamese 

catfish, Asian redtail 

catfish, Siamese carp, Amazon 

Redtail catfish, alligator 

gar fish, etc.

Baits 

As for baits, a variety of baits can be purchased at the 

pond including fish, chicken, and chicken innards. While 

my favourite bait is fish, other baits are successful at

Café Lumière is one cosy place to have a meal and hangout 

at. It’s relaxing ambience makes this place a good 

place to relax especially if one gets to sit on the sofa 

section of the cafe. Part of its contemporary decor are 

big light bulbs that hangs down from the ceiling providing 

some warm lighting to the place; perhaps from these bulbs 

comes the name “Lumière” of which is Light in French.

Gerald and wife, Vivian; started Café Lumière in April or 

May 2017 and have been hands on preparing and serving 

tasty food with the objective of serving up healthier 

meals to their dinners. Both Gerald and Vivian has been 

in the hospitality industry for many years now.

The concept of Café Lumière is one where they only 

serve what is on the menu (main course) that day and 

nothing else. During our visit we enjoyed lasagne, cream 

of pumpkin soup, and spaghetti Bolognese prepared by 

Gerald using only fresh herbs without any premixed seasoning.

As for desserts Café Lumière serves delicious cakes that 

are not too sweet but yet sweet enough. The cakes come 

from the coastal town of Klang in Selangor instead of 

nearby bakeries as Gerald and Vivian wanted them in a 

certain way being tasty yet not too sweet.

Back in April I had the opportunity 

to attend the second MGFA UL 

Micro Clinic held at Extreme Anglers 

Studio 16 in Petaling Jaya. I 

missed attending the first clinic as I 

was still in college but my holidays 

came just in time for the second 

clinic. The clinic’s purpose was to 

share knowledge on micro luring 

and effective techniques for the 

new deadly ORCraft Baby Code 

and Spearyu lures. A preview of 

hooks from Ichikawa Fishing Malaysia 

and free testing samples 

were also offered for participants. 

From this clinic I gained a lot more 

than what I expected. The discussions 

and sharing ventured 

into the finesse concept and I will 

share some important knowledge 

I learned from the clinic.

The clinic began with a talk on the finesse concept by 

MGFA Pro Staff, Mr. Ginson Tan. What I understood is 

that finesse concept is about creating a presentation that 

is as natural as possible. To achieve this, sizing down 

tackle is important. From rod, reel, line, lure – the whole 

package must be sized down. The finesse approach is 

not just important but a must these days. Immense fishing 

pressure and other factors have affected fish populations, 

and the fishes that are around are not easy to 

catch.

Next, Ichikawa Fishing Malaysia Pro Staff, Mr. Sam 

shared his knowledge on the advantages of Ichikawa 

hooks. He previewed a few models which have been in 

the Malaysian market such as the Ichikawa J-Spike Jigging 

Hook, Kamakiri Trebles, B.S.P hooks, and K.O.S.H 

single hooks. Being the soft plastic addict that I am, I was 

definitely interested in the B.S.P hooks for soft plastic 

fishing. The B.S.P wormhooks has a PTFE coating which 

makes it feel kind of oily when held in hand. I believe this 

can bring an advantage particularly during tournament 

situations when each bite matters. The Kamakiri trebles 

also have the same coating and are very sharp, making 

them the perfect choice for game fish species that don’t 

require beefy hooks.

Another interesting part of Mr. Sam’s talk was about the 

Ichikawa Fishing K.O.S.H single hooks. He said that the 

K.O.S.H single hooks were designed specifically to be 

used for our local fishing. As we all know Malaysian game 

fish such as Giant Snakeheads and Hampala Barbs can 

easily destroy even the best hooks out there. The K.O.S.H 

hooks certainly seemed strong and worthy of battling 

such monsters.

Mr. Ginson continued sharing about suitable setups for 

finesse presentations. A spinning setup is certainly preferred, 

but there are also casting setups capable of handling 

light lures well, if not better than spinning setups. It 

goes down to personal preference. The important part is 

balancing the setup well in order to get the most out of a 

lure, and the finesse presentation.

Mr. Kenny Chee of Extreme Anglers talked about presenting 

your lure for a finesse approach. with a focus on 

a well balanced setup in order for the finesse presentation 

to be effective. For example, a 3-10lb setup with 8lb 

line and a 20lb leader would be unfavourable for the finesse 

presentation as the thick leader would dampen the 

action of the lure thus hampering the presentation.

Mr. Kenny Chee continued on how to present two deadly 

finesse lures from ORCraft – Baby Code and Spearyu. 

The main techniques are casting it out, and jerking it continuously, 

as well as a jerk and pause technique. These 

are mainstream approaches which have proven to catch 

fish. However, what Mr. Kenny demonstrated next was 

completely new to me.

The third approach was casting it out and letting it sink 

before jerking it upwards similar to jigging and letting it 

fall on slack line. Both the Baby Code and Spearyu flutter 

on the drop, making them deadly for fishes such as Peacock 

Bass. During the fall (no matter how long), observe 

the slack without reeling and if the slack line begins moving, 

slowly crank in line until pressure is felt which means 

a fish is on. This technique is responsible for Mr. Kenny’s 

monster 63cm Peacock Bass (personal record).

Those are the key points that I can summarize for this 

article. The discussion was long and covered a broad 

range of topics which also included the type of rods suitable 

for finesse luring, what rod actions, and what kind of 

reels (shallow spool or regular spools). These topics are 

a bit too long to be discussed here but the key things that 

you want are a balanced setup from your rod, reel, line, 

leader and even swivel. Light line would be an obvious 

advantage for presenting finesse lures and it would help 

in detecting bites. Rod length goes down to your personal 

preference and your choice of poundage should match
