Rockwood theater students
shine at conference
Rockwood Summit and Lafayette High
students had great success at this year’s
Missouri Thespian Conference, which was
held in St. Louis.
“We had four students compete in the
individual events category,” said Rockwood
Summit High theater teacher Katherine
Fischer. “There was also duet acting,
musical solo and acting solo.”
Isa Garcia and Bryce Miller, performing
as duet acting, and Mikeysa Powell, performing
a musical solo, received a “superior”
rating, while senior Sydnee Nelson,
performing as solo acting, received an
“excellent” rating.
“This is my eighth year at Summit, and
it’s the first time I’ve had two separate student
performances get a ‘superior’ rating,”
said Fischer.
An improv troupe from Lafayette High,
Rockwood Summit students Isa Garcia and
Bryce Miller received “superior” ratings at the
Missouri Thespian Conference.

rating. The troupe included Alex
Dederer, Peyton Boyd, Will Gerretsen,
Abby Mirikitani and Keilah Moore.
Any student who receives a “superior”
rating regionally is invited to continue
competing at the national level. That next
step is the International Thespian Festival
in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Third round of Merit Scholarship
winners announced
National Merit Scholarship Corporation
[NMSC] announced more than 3,200
winners of National Merit Scholarships
financed by U.S. colleges and universities.
Officials of each sponsor college selected
their scholarship winners from among the
finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship
Program who plan to attend their
institution.
