GCA had a fun, and sometimes
confusing, year with seven sets of
twins on campus. According to
The National Vital Statistics Report,
Volume 66, Issue 1 on January 5,
2017, twins account for 3% of the U.S.
population. This year at GCA, with
fourteen twins, we almost doubled
that statistic!
Having a same-age sibling has its
pros and cons. Kristin Burgess notes
“the advantage of being a twin is that
I always have someone to hang out
with.” That sentiment was echoed by
most of the siblings. Emma Tol took
it one step further, describing it as
“always having your best friend with
you.”
On the flip side, being a twin elicits
more comparisons and assumptions
than for others with siblings. Identical
twins Katie and Amie Shelley
would rather be accepted for their
individuality. Yet, without knowing the
other one’s response to our questions,
they (not surprisingly) answered them
almost identically! Both stated “People
assume that because you look alike it
means that you are the same person.”
Although being a twin is not an
uncommon phenomenon, we still are
intrigued and often ask very unusual
questions. Many of our twin pairs get
asked if they are telepathic. Alexis and
Briana Castro shared that the strangest
question they get is “Can you feel each
other’s pain?”
There is still a lot to learn about
twins. But one thing we do know – we
are blessed to have each of these pairs
of twins in our GCA family!
