In May 2016 Volocopter VC200 two-seat multicopter made the successful
maiden manned flight in Germany (top and bottom photo)
1. Volocopter uses 18 motors to provide redundant lifting power.
2. The propeller of Volocopter’s each motor is fixed pitch for simplicity.
3. Soon this scene may become a normal reality in Dubai, an eVTOL ondemand
aerial mobility vehicle.
Actually Volocopter VC200 is not the first eVTOL signing a
deal with Dubai RTA. The Chinese consumer drone company
Ehang signed a deal with RTA last year to test its singleperson
Ehang 184 in Dubai. However, Ehang 184 has not
yet demonstrated a practical flight performance. In addition,
the Chinese media reported that Ehang has been in financial
trouble so it is hard to tell how far Ehang 184 or even the
company can go in the near future.
Though Volocopter is not a partner (yet) with UBER’s Elevate
program, UBER has already been in talks with Dubai to publicly
demonstrate its own flying taxi service planned in 2020.
If Volocopter’s demo program could go well as planned, it
will be big propulsion for UBER’s efforts as well.
