Check out my very
own fashion website
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… Ok, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short) I’m 43, a mother and a grandmother.
This month has been very full on
for me.
I’ve been busy selling
my fabulous ‘Lily Lashes’
(my new false eyelash
range, picture below) and
I’ve really enjoyed doing
a few makeovers for some
photoshoots and military
balls. All in a days work!
My most recent
fashion purchases have
been some amazing
Gucciesque loafers from
the Next sale, plus a high
neck pink blouse from the Marks
& Spencer Sale.
They are perfect with jeans for a
casual pub afternoon out, or jazz up
with some satin black
wide leg trousers for an
evening on the town.
I’ve been looking at the
AW17 trends and it’s all
about colour.
You will be pleased to
know florals are still
everywhere! Team a
floral summer dress
with a roll neck and
tights to get plenty more
wear out of it as the
weather changes.
Maxi dresses are big for
winter; you can wear them
with long boots and always choose a
full-length coat to wear with it!
FASHION
Also, if you’re lucky enough to still
have a waist (especially those at
our age) then belts are featuring
everywhere.
Pull in a loose dress or tunic top to
change an outfit from dull to diva in
one easy move.
The mood boards I’ve put together
are from Zara, Next and New Look.
These give you an idea of how to put
the outfits together. There are still a
lot of clashing colours, patterns and
fabrics.
Make-up is neutral with a strong lip
colour, and in terms of hair it’s all
about the cut rather than the colour,
so pop into Toni and Guy and have a
consultation.
I personally recommend Zoe in the
Bury St Edmunds branch.
So, as always go out there and make
your shopping enjoyable.
I’m always here for style advice so get
in touch.
My next few editions will be about the
benefit of semi permanent make-up.
Customs & Superstitions
BY CATHERINE STARLING-GUNFIELD
During my time as a
wedding planning,
designer and now a bride
to be, I have come across
lots of sayings, customs
and some strange rituals
associated with weddings
and being a bride... but
why and where do they
originate?
In the past Brides were thought to
be particularly vulnerable to evil
spirits and many of the customs and
traditions associated with weddings
are to provide protection for the
bride and then secure luck and
happiness for the couple. There are
so many customs and some of these
rituals have lasted for hundreds of
years and some are still used today...
here are a few that have caught my
eye over the years.
SURNAMES
It was thought unlucky for a woman to marry a man whose
surname began with the same letter as hers. “To change the
name and not the letter is to change for the worst and not
the better”. The bride should not practice writing her new
name before the wedding. This is thought to bring bad luck by
tempting fate.
THE WEDDING DRESS
It is thought unlucky for the bride to make her own wedding
dress. It is also unlucky for the groom to see the bride in her
wedding dress before until she arrives at the ceremony. The
bride should not wear her entire outfit before the wedding day.
THE VEIL
The veil was originally worn by Roman brides. It was thought
that it would disguise the bride and therefore outwit malevolent
spirits. The veil became popular in Britain in the eighteen
hundreds. In this country it is associated with modesty and
chastity.
FLOWERS
Flowers have always been used for decoration at weddings.
A combination of red and white flowers is avoided by the
superstitious because they stand for blood and bandages. The
groom often chooses a flower for his buttonhole which also
16

WEDDING
AUGUST AUGUST 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #58 | #58 WEDDING
occurs in the bride’s bouquet.
This is a vestige of the time when a
Knight would wear his Lady’s colours to
display his love.
ON THE WAY TO THE WEDDING
Seeing a chimney sweep on the way to a
wedding is thought to bring good luck and
some couples hire one to attend wedding
ceremonies. Other good luck omens when seen
on the way to the ceremony include lambs,
toads, spiders, black cats and rainbows.
WEATHER
Bad weather on
the way to the wedding
is thought to be an omen of an
unhappy marriage, but in some cultures
rain is considered a good omen. Cloudy skies
and wind cause stormy marriages. Snow is
associated with fertility and wealth.
BOUQUET
The bride throws her bouquet back over her
shoulder where the unmarried female guest
group together. Tradition is that the one who
catches the bouquet will be the next one of
those present to marry. A parallel custom is
for the groom to remove the garter worn by
the bride and throw it back over his shoulder
toward the unmarried male guests, whoever
catches will be next to marry.
CONFETTI
Before the use of paper confetti the married
couple were showered with flowers, petals, rice or
grains. This was to bestow prosperity and fertility
on the couple.
THE BEST MAN
It is the best man’s duty to protect the groom
from bad luck. He must ensure that once the
groom has began his journey to the church he
does not return for any reason.
Happy planning ...
Catherine
Latitude Review
THE BOUNCE TEAM CHECK OUT THE FESTIVAL...
Henham Park hosted the
12th edition of Festival
Republic’s Latitude
Festival last month, and
team Bounce were back
to cover the goings on of
the weekend.
It dubs itself a “multi-arts festival” and
that moniker is apt.
Alongside music, you can find
everything from comedy, theatre,
dance, film, poetry, literature, cabaret,
science talks and art. There’s quite
a big chance you’ll find something
you’re at least slightly interested in.
Latitude is my local festival. I’ve been
coming for the last ten years now.
In that time I have seen Damon Albarn
command a thunderstorm, Bloc Party
and The Maccabees before they split
up, and even one of Arcade Fire’s rare appearances.
After we arrived on Thursday afternoon, like all good locals, we
pitched our tents and headed into the main arena. During the
evening we really enjoyed browsing the art scenes scattered
throughout the woods. I really enjoy Thursday evenings at
Latitude as a rule, it’s much like the calm before the storm.
As Friday came, we woke up surprisingly fresh from our tents.
The day progressed, more Bounce members appeared and by
5pm it was time to make our way to into the main area and
grab a nice cold beer.
Having seen The Coral here before, we enjoyed ducking in
and out of the comedy tent, until it was time for Goldfrapp.
Alison was a vision in crimson and had us all mesmerised, not
forgetting to comment on her thigh-high PVC boots, electroglam
done correctly, I may add!
As the main event came, team Bounce was split between The
1975 and Placebo, annoyingly the two clashed. Being a bit
older than a few of my team mates I joined the Placebo team,
grudging around to songs from my teens such as ‘Nancy Boy’ –
nostalgia at its best!
Reports from The 1975 crew stated a good performance,
25

AUGUST 2017 | ISSUE #58
but complained of two or three slow tracks in
a row, and wanted more from a Friday night
performance (you can’t win them all).
At that point we took the time to boast about
Placebo finishing their set with a blinding cover
of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up that Hill’, which sent
goosebumps down my spine!
We reunited and headed deeper into the woods.
The rest of the night was spent dancing away to
all of our favourite old school tunes in the ‘Guilty
Pleasures’ tent… it’s a Latitude must and had to
be done!
As day broke on the Saturday, the programme
was consulted during the wait for the (cold)
showers. A fairly bleak start with a few sore heads
in camp! After a little R&R we were good to go
again.
I couldn’t wait to see one of my favourite
performers Lucy Rose, who I had recently
interviewed at the press day.
then treated fans to tracks from her new album,
‘Somethings Changing’.
This album really touches me as Lucy told me that
it was written following her trip in 2016 to play
shows for fans in Latin America. One particular
song that gets me is called “I can’t change it all”.
She told me “It’s about this man I met in Paraguay
and what he’d gone through and I kept thinking
about how I could help him and I just realised
that there was nothing I could really do. He just
told me to write more songs, that’s how I’d help
him, so that inspired that song. There’s a lot of
self-discovery on the record, finding myself in new
places, I can pin a lot of places on songs.” Lucy
was fabulous!
We then headed over to see Declan McKenna in
the BBC Music tent. After our interview with him
last month we couldn’t miss it.
He played his latest single ‘Humungous’ as well as
his song that shot him to fame ‘Brazil’.
Lucy absolutely owned the stage for the best part
of an hour, opening with ‘Floral Dresses’, Lucy
Leon Bridges delivered a great performance
of soul tunes to an audience growing in its
anticipation of the day’s headliners, Mumford &
Sons. Although others seemed under-whelmed, I
other hand really enjoyed their set and took great
pleasure in dancing away to ‘I Will Wait’ amongst
other favourites of mine such as ‘The Cave’.
in my head as long as I enjoyed it I didn’t care
what the critics said!
With others awaking with the first rays of sunlight
on Sunday, I have to admit I was still up putting
the world to rights! It was my last night of
Latitude and it just had to be done.
So after a power nap, the group stirred and
what better way to revitalize, than to have a
team breakfast. So we headed over to Blixen, for
Avocado’s, Bacon and Eggs on Rye bread. It did
the trick!
day earlier as on a Sunday night when the party
was over knowing we’d got work again in the
morning, it was just too much.
It was left to Fleet Foxes to close the festival, and
whilst they might be critically we were left waiting
and eager to hear tracks like ‘Mykanos’ or ‘White
Winter Hymnal’.
We decided to call it a day and left to the sounds of
‘White Winter Hymnal’ travel across the campsite
towards the car park. A moment to remember!
As the gates closed on the 12th edition of Latitude,
thoughts now turn to the weekend of the 18th July
2018, I think I may need a year to recover!
Needless to say there was a lot of mooching
going on during Sunday.
I wish Fat Boy Slim would have been playing a
Charlie Fink
Singer/songwriter Charlie Fink rose through the U.K.’s indie folk
heyday to become a versatile solo musician in his own right.
28

FEATURE
AUGUST 2017 AUGUST | ISSUE 2017 | #58 ISSUE | CHARLIE #58 FINK
SINGER & SONGWRITER
He first entered the limelight when he formed Noah and the Whale, and the
band released four full-length albums, becoming a staple of
the U.K.’s young folk scene.
Noah and the Whale split up in 2015 after six
years together and multiple tours of both the
U.K. and America.
‘Cover My Tracks’ is the new debut solo
album released just ahead of a theatrical
production of the same name, with a script by
the award-winning playwright, David Greig, at
The Old Vic theatre.
Rachel Ducker spoke to Charlie about his
recent theatrical adaptations performed
recently at the Latitude
Festival 2017 and finds out
more about his upcoming
tour next month in Bury St
Edmunds.
R: How did you get into the
music scene?
I had just moved back to
London from Manchester
and I went to a gig to see the girl called Emmy
the Great. During the gig she announced
that her bass player was leaving the band, so
I went up to her afterwards and offered my
services as a bass player.
She ended up taking me up on that offer and I
toured with her for a while and whilst doing so
I formed my own band ‘Noah and the Whale’.
Then we started touring by ourselves and the
rest is history.
R: Have you always had a passion for folk
music?
Yeah definitely, I grew up in a house of folk
music, my mum was a real ‘folkie’ when I was
younger.
R: That must have been a fun household?
Definitely, it was very fun, but also very
embarrassing at the same time. Especially
at parties when you’re mum gets out the
acoustic guitar, in general
I listened to a lot of Bob
Dylan that sort of thing.
R: You first entered the
limelight through ‘Noah
and the Whale’, that must
have been some journey
over eight years?
Yeah, it was. It was a really
amazing time with the band, and a mixture of
trepidation and excitement when leaving and
looking for a new project. That was when I did
the show ‘The Lorax’ with The Old Vic, which
lead me to doing the new show ‘Cover My
Tracks’ which is about to ‘hit the road’.
R: How have you changed as an artist since
the band split?
Yes, in lots of different ways. I think during my
29

AUGUST 2017 AUGUST | ISSUE 2017 | #58 ISSUE | CHARLIE #58 FINK
time working in theatre, I feel like the thing
I have learnt the most about is lyric writing,
because when your writing for theatre the
lyrics have to carry a story and also you only
have a short period of time to do that in.
The projects I have worked on have both been
incredibly collaborative in a different way
to being in a band. In ‘Noah and the Whale’
I used to be the songwriter in the band and
was involved in a lot of production, whereas
here, I am reacting to someone else’s scripts
and working on a story with them, so it’s a
different kind of collaboration I suppose.
at the Latitude Festival, what was it like to
perform a theatrical production as apposed
to being on a main music stage?
There’s more pressure definitely, as people are
paying much more attention to what you’re
doing. I think when you’re on a big stage,
people engage in a different way, whereas
with theatre they are really listening to every
word and can really hear every note you play,
so I think there’s more attention to detail in
the theatre to than on the main stage.
R: It was an idyllic location to perform!
R: You’ve since written songs for movies such
as a ‘Street Cat Named Bob’ what was it like
to see your songs brought to life on screen?
Its cool, it’s a different thing when you write
for a film as apposed to a theatre production.
With a film, it’s very much out of your hands.
However, with a piece of theatre you are
constantly crafting and changing the songs as
you go, and that’s something I really enjoy. I
like being involved in the process of bringing
something to life.
R: Your new solo work has taken you into
more of a theatrical direction, how did that
come about?
It literally happened as I was wrapping up
with the band. I got an email from The Old
Vic asking if I would come and write music
for this new show they were doing called The
Lorax based on the Dr Seuss Book. Having
never done anything like that before I said
yes, out of curiosity and also they had such
an amazing reputation. It was really from that
email and then falling in love with how we
made that show.
Absolutely!
R: The story of ‘Cover My Tracks’ combines
live music with modern folk tale, what was
the inspiration behind the story?
So, I wrote the show with David Greig, who is
a Scottish playwright. I worked with on ‘The
Lorax’, with him and whilst doing so we were
discussing our shared passion for folk music
and the mystery of it.
It was also a little bit based on the idea
surrounding the question ‘how can you make
an album of songs relevant to the 21st century,
in that we all now how a thing in our pocket
which is the most entertaining thing of all time
and has every song ever written on it’.
So its easy not to listen to a whole album
when you just pick out your favourite song,
I do that and everyone does that, so the
challenge was how could you make it so that
these songs ‘need’ to be together and it felt
like the answer was theater.
R: I think you’re completely right!
R: You performed ‘Cover My Tracks’ recently
Are there any similarities between yourself
and the main character?
(Chuckles) I think there’s definitely something;
the lead character is in a band and called time
on that band, he is looking for something new,
and I can definitely relate to that part of the
character. I suppose it is also a character who
is feeling like he is struggling to do something
original in the 21st century with music and
with art, because there is so much baggage
and so much history, so how do you do
something new? I think there’s also a lot of key
differences (laughs) to me and the character.
R: How much time went into rehearsals?
It must be different to being in the studio
recording?
cry and have a good time.
R: Looking back to Noah and the Whale do
you have fond memories? Is there anything
you miss?
Yeah definitely, with everything there is lots
of good things, and things that make it tricky,
but its weighing up which of those things is
important. It was one of the great joys of my
life being in the ‘Noah and the Whale’ and
my favourite people were in the band, so its
always going to have a very precious place in
my heart, I don’t have any regrets or anything,
and I am happy that its happened.
Totally, also a lot of the songs adapt to fit the
show, some work slightly differently in the
show to what they do on the album. We did
about a month of rehearsals for the show in
two weeks in The Old Vic, and then another
week or so for Latitude, it was a fun project.
R: Lastly, with all of my interviews I like to do
a little research and I was shocked to find out
that you’re my birthday twin! I have never
spoken to anyone before who was born on
the exact day on the exact year as me, do
you know what time you were born?
R: Do you have a favourite song to perform
from the new album?
I guess my favourite at the moment is
‘Anywhere You’re Going Is On My Way’ there
are two quite different versions. The album
version is quite gentle and then the version
we have been doing in the show now is quite
striving. Its like with the band we used to play
a lot of different versions of our songs, so in
the show it’s nice to play a happy more upbeat
version of this track.
R: You’re stopping by us at The Apex in
Bury St Edmunds in September, for anyone
who didn’t see you perform at Latitude how
would you describe the show?
Its quite hard to beat an evening of music
and theatre, intertwined with folk storytelling
about what it means to disappear in the 21st
century, hopefully you will laugh and you will
No way! Great day! (chuckles) I don’t know
how I know this, but I also know we both share
the exact birthday with Megan Fox. So me,
you and Megan all have the same birthday!
R: I feel very complimented to be in that
birthday circle!
Likewise!
R: Thanks for talking the time to talk to me
you at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds in
AUGUST 2017 | AUGUST ISSUE #58 2017 | | ISSUE HEALTH #58 & WELLBEING
Are you getting enough sleep?
I imagine we’ve all had mornings where we
didn’t get enough sleep, it can make you feel
quite irritable and in a low mood. The Sleep
Council report an alarming 4 out of 5 of us
complain of inadequate or disturbed sleep. So
why is getting a good night sleep important?
computers, phones, tablets and TV’s can hinder
it’s production and so preventing you from feeling
drowsy.
Limit Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant, which
means it makes us feel more alert.
WHY DO WE SLEEP?
We spend one third of our lives asleep and the
reason for this is simple, sleep is essential for our
physical health and mental well being. Not getting
enough sleep can affect how well you learn, get
along with others, work, react and think. Even
after just one night without sleep, concentration
can become more difficult. Long term sleep
deficiency has been linked to an increase in the
risk of chronic health problems like heart disease,
kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure,
stroke, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.
TIPS FOR A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP…
Avoid Bright Screens Before Bed: Melatonin
is the hormone that helps you enter into your
sleep cycle and light from screens such as
Use Relaxation Techniques: It’s suggested that
half of all insomnia cases are caused by emotional
issues such as anxiety, stress and depression.
So a good relaxation technique like 7/11 (as
mentioned in last months article) is always handy
to have.
Exercise: Regular exercise can not only help you
sleep but also improve your quality of sleep.
Habit: Create your own habit of going to bed and
waking up at the same time.
Do Something Boring: If you find getting up
helps you if you can’t sleep, make sure you do
something boring until you feel sleepy. Avoid
engaging in a fun or stimulating activity because
you don’t want to reward your brain for staying
awake!
Benefits
Calms the brain and helps relieve stress
and mild depression
Stretches the shoulders, hamstrings,
calves, and arches
Strengthens the arms and legs, and core
Helps prevent osteoporosis
Cautions:
Shoulder injuries, support torso on a
bolster; neck injuries, support forehead
on a block.
How to try the pose:
1. Start in Dolphin Pose, knees bent.
Then walk your feet back until your
shoulders are directly over the elbows
and your torso is parallel to the floor.
2. Press your inner forearms and
elbows firmly against the floor. Firm
your shoulder blades against your back
and spread them away from the spine.
Similarly spread your collarbones away
from the sternum.
AUGUST 2017 | ISSUE #58
SIR GEORGE ALFRED
JULIUS
Sir George Alfred Julius (29 April 1873 – 28 June 1946) was
an English born, Australian inventor and entrepreneur. He was
the founder of Julius Poole & Gibson Pty Ltd and Automatic
Totalisators Ltd, and invented the world’s first automatic
totalisator.
Born in a small house in Bethel Street, Norwich which was
demolished in the 1930s to make way for the new City Hall.
His father, Churchill Julius was a curate at St. Giles in Norwich.
In 1873 the family moved firstly to the parishes of South Brent
and then to Shapwick and Ashcott in Somerset. Later, Churchill
Julius became vicar of Holy Trinity, Islington, London; he later
became Archdeacon of Ballarat, Australia and it was to here
that the family travelled on the sailing ship ‘South Australian’ in
1884. The family moved to New Zealand when Churchill Julius
was nominated to the Diocese of Christchurch in 1889; he was
consecrated first Bishop of Christchurch in 1890, and made
Anglican Primate and first Archbishop of New Zealand in 1922.
In 1890, George Julius enrolled in a BSc degree course at
Canterbury College, University of New Zealand. Because of
the contemporary boom in railway construction, he specialised
in railway engineering and was the first such engineering
student to graduate from this university, at the same time as
Ernest Rutherford. In 1896. He travelled to Western Australia
to accept an appointment as assistant engineer on the staff of
the Locomotive Department, Western Australian Government
Railways. He worked for the Department for eleven years
and was promoted to chief draughtsman and then engineer
in charge of tests. George Julius worked on the design for
an automatic totalisator. Helped by two of his sons, he built
a prototype. However, the automatic totalisator was not
originally conceived as a betting machine, but as a mechanical
vote-counting machine. The government rejected the voting
machine concept and George Julius adapted it as a racecourse
totalisator. The first installation of the totalisator was at
Ellerslie Racecourse, Auckland,
New Zealand in 1913, which was
entirely manual in operation, and
the second at Gloucester Park
Racetrack in Western Australia,
electrically driven. The patent
was lodged on 21 December 1914.
All orders kept the firm of Julius,
Poole & Gibson solvent throughout
the Great Depression, and the
first UK installation in 1928, for
greyhound racing and in 1932
the first American installation at
Hialeah Park, Florida.
Appointed in 1926, as chairman
to the Council for Scientific and
Industrial Research (CSIR), which
later became the Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Research
Organisation (CSIRO), modelled
on the UK’s DSIR. He lobbied
for development of primary
production and solution to issues
in such areas as food storage and
food preservation. George later,
turned his attention to issues in
secondary production such as
aeronautics and electronics and
during World War II, he served on
the Central Inventions Board, the
Australian Council for Aeronautics
as chairman and the Army
Inventions Directorate. Knighted
in 1929, he remained a committee
representative until his death.
birthday present… and that was it, we started playing
and I kind of fell in love with it really.
R: So you have your mum to thank really?
Absolutely! I mean, I thought it was a fad and it might
be under the bed in a couple of weeks, I’ve never been
musical and it’s never run in the family.
I also fell in love with being in a band; I loved playing
gigs, the buzz, the excitement and the fear.
R: You are an original member of James aren’t you?
I am!
R: I have heard a rumour that the band is actually
named after you?
Sort of, that sounds much more impressive! I wish I
could say it was because I was the most talented but
its not. We had the idea for the band name to be a
person’s name, and like the concept of the band being
a person, or a living being in a way.
I think it was Paul that suggested we call the band
‘James’ and it was inspired by me as no one has ever
called me James, so its never really felt like my name.
I am known as ‘Jim’ out of ‘James’, its just a piece of
my life now, so it doesn’t really feel or sounds like my
name, because James to me is the band.
R: How did you get into the music
scene?
R: There are seven members of the band now is that
correct?
For me, it was by accident. My best
friend at school got into music in a
big way and he said he was going
to start a band, so then he asked if I
could be the bass player.
We found a friend of a friend who
was selling a bass guitar and for
some reason my mother decided to
buy it for me and said it was an early
There’s actually eight! We have a new member who’s
doing the backing vocals and percussion and things.
R: They can no longer call
you the magnificent seven
then?
Yeah, we are the
magnificence eight now! I
mean, members have come
and gone for example Larry wasn’t the original
guitar player, Larry joined he left, and then he
came back again and he’s gone now, we are a
flexible number of people really.
R: It sounds like you’ve evolved though, and
your success really came in the 90’s with
much loved songs such as “Come Home,”
“Sit Down” and “She’s a Star”, with that
rise, how did it feel when Tim came to the
decision that he was going to leave the
band?
It was hardly surprising really we’d gone
through a couple of albums that were
particularly difficult for us.
We’ve had some fairly disastrous times in
James really, sometimes it was to do with the
business and other times its been more about
the relationships in the band and people just
not getting on.
R: Band politics?
Yeah, and up until Tim leaving, it had been a
fairly difficult couple of records, but we kind
of made a little bit of a peace now really, I
think actually we are a very different bunch of
people.
R: What did you do whilst the band was
having a break?
I stayed in music; I was doing stuff I wanted
to do without having any pressure on me. I
worked on anything that sounded kind of fun
and interesting.
R: After reuniting, how would you say you
have evolved as an artist yourself, since
2007?
The last two records we’ve done have done
really well. We consciously changed the way
we did things. In this music climate you can’t
just sit there and not evolve, we’ve never
been a bad who has wanted to do that. We’ve
found a whole heap of success again, which
is bonkers. We try to be relevant and creative.
The secret to longevity is to keep changing.
R: You are performing at our much loved
Newmarket Nights on 4th August, what can
we expect from this evening?
Its damn good fun actually, it’s a really nice
day out, so I am really looking forward to it.
Trouble is we have too many bloody songs so
we will mix it up with a few new ones and the
classics of course.
R: Will you place a few bets whilst your
there?
Well, I did last time and I won some money
which was fantastic, what we did was, the
band all put a bet on the horses in the last
race and all had to have the name with a
connection to a James song, so we all picked
one and mine won! I am looking forward to it.
R: We are too! Thank you for talking the time
AUGUST 2017 | ISSUE #58
Here’s what we thought...
MODERN
FOOD FUSION...
Nestled in the Arc Shopping Centre in
Bury St Edmunds sits Wagamama, the
Japanese/Asian Fusion noodle chain,
offering a new twist to dining with fresh
food in a friendly, vibrant setting.
Rachel Ducker and the Bounce Magazine team,
were invited along to try out some of the dishes
off the popular summer menu.
“Like the food, the interior is minimalist, modern
and fresh.
Stylish lights hang above the wooden tables
with metal legs, it reflects a Japanese Feng Shui
style of living; giving diners the sense of eating
as a family – everyone sits and eats together.
Soya sauce, chilli oil and dried chilli salt sit
neatly alongside your throwaway table mat and
chopsticks.
One of the great things about Wagamama, apart
from their relaxed seating style, is they like to mix
things up a bit and every so often they add new
dishes.
The current summer menu is split into categories
56

FOOD FOOD FOOD & DRINK DRINK DRINK
AUGUST 2017 | ISSUE #58
of Sides, Teppanyaki, Omakase, Donburi, Ramen,
Curries, Salads, Desserts and Drinks. With a large
range of dishes ranging from Japanese to Thai,
many of which sounded very tempting to us,
makes for difficult choosing, so its worth having a
sneak peek at the menus before hand.
At first, I struggled to decide what to order;
thankfully our waitress was patient and helpful,
helping us to decide on which starters (sides)
would best suit our tastes.
“The waiting staff write your
dish number on your table mat
to identify who ordered what, it
confused me at first but it makes
for quicker service!”
In the end, we decided to share a selection,
which included ‘Mixed Mushrooms & Panko
Aubergine Hirata Steamed Buns’ - two
small, fluffy Asian Buns stuffed with Mixed
Mushrooms and Panko Aubergine, served with
Japanese Mayonnaise and Coriander. The buns
were almost like a fat mini-pitta, open at the
sides with the filing on show, the ingredients
were a match made in heaven, especially
for veggies like me, oh and did I mention
everything is cooked fresh in the kitchen so
you can substitute ingredients if necessary.
We selected the ‘Chilli Squid’ - Crispy Fried
Squid dusted with Shichimi, served with a
Chilli Coriander dipping sauce. I could have
sat there for hours on end eating the Chilli
Squid, but unfortunately I was supposed to be
sharing! The spicy and crunchy-coated squid
ringlets accompanied with a sour dipping
sauce is certainly one I would recommend!
Also in the line up were the ‘Duck Wraps’ -
shredded Crispy Duck served with Cucumber
and Spring Onions, served with Asian
Pancakes and Cherry Hoisin Sauce, along
with Ruth’s favourite, ‘Duck Gyoza’ - five tasty
Fried Duck Dumplings served with a dipping
sauce.
You can have the sides as starters, just
like we did, or you can have all of the food
coming at once with the main dish, which is
the traditional way of eating Asian food. The
portions weren’t too big, serving as finger
food before the more filling main dishes.
For the main course, James selected the
‘Teriyaki Beef Donburi’. Before long a large
bowl arrives (as in, much larger than your
standard cereal bowl) filled to the brim with
sticky White Rice, Beef Brisket in a Teriyaki
Sauce shredded Carrots, Pea Shoots and
Onions, garnished with Sesame Seeds and
served with a side of Kimchee.
Sam opted for the ‘Teriyaki Sirloin Steak Soba’
- grilled Sirloin Steak with Soba Noodles in
Curry Oil, Mangetout, Bok Choi, Red Onion,
Chillies and Beansprouts in a Teriyaki Sauce,
garnished with Sesame Seeds.
I decided to order a big, filling, main dish.
Sadly on this occasion there were no Tofu
dishes available, which alarmed me as a
‘selective’ vegetarian, however, my main dish
more than made up for this. I selected the
‘Shitake Donburi’ - Shiitake Mushrooms and
Broccoli Omelette served on Brown Rice in
a Teriyaki Sauce garnished with Shredded
Carrots, Spring Onions, Chilli and Pea
Shoots, with a Fried Egg and an added
side of Kimchee (a favourite of mine from
my Korean travels)! It was delicious, as it
turned out; it was a rather scrumptious dish
consisting of many levels of flavours and
textures.
Finally, Ruth went for the ‘Teriyaki Chicken’
in Teriyaki Sauce with sticky White Rice,
shredded Carrots, Pea Shoots and Onions,
garnished with Sesame Seeds and served
with a side of Kimchee.
Ice Cream and Chocolate Layer cake.
Overall the food is always full of flavour,
comforting and exactly what is says on the tin.
The ingredients are unusual to the point you
need to Google some of the seafood, herbs and
vegetables on offer, but I love the fact the food
is healthy, hearty and great value for money.
Wagamama we will be back!”
All dishes arrived in a similar format, but
were completely different in their own way.
We all had just enough room for dessert
(and a helping of Sake). The dessert ranges
from Banana in Panko Breadcrumbs with a
scoop of Salted Caramel Ice Cream to Yuzu
Chicken
Arrabbiata
A quick and easy midweek dinner.
This chicken arrabbiata recipe will
bring a slice of Italy into your home.
1. Put each chicken breast between 2
pieces of baking paper and flatten to
1cm thick with a rolling pin or meat
tenderiser. Set aside.
2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a medium
saucepan, then fry the garlic and
chilli for 2 minutes. Add the canned
tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. Cook
for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally,
until the sauce has thickened and the
cherry tomatoes are beginning to
break down. Add the olives, capers
and basil with a good pinch of salt
and pepper. Stir.
3. While the sauce is cooking, heat a
griddle pan until smoking hot. Lightly
brush the chicken all over with the
remaining oil and season well, then
griddle for 4 minutes on each side or
until cooked. Rest for 5 minutes, then
slice.
Ingredients
• 4 free-range British skinless and
boneless chicken breasts
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 3 garlic cloves, finely sliced
• 1 large red chilli, finely sliced
• 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
• 400g fresh cherry tomatoes
• 120g pitted black olives, halved
• 2 tbsp capers, drained and rinsed
• ½ small bunch fresh basil, roughly
chopped
Check out Team
Bounce’s effort below!
4. Pour the sauce over the chicken,
then serve with steamed spinach and
boiled new potatoes, if you like.
the slices on an oven tray, toast slowly in
reserve in icy water, which will make them
all crunchy and curly!
The best way to
taste a wine
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
FOLLOW THE 5S’S
SEE, SWIRL, SMELL, SIP & SPIT OR SWALLOW
Although you might say that the best way
to taste a wine is to ‘just drink some of it’
there is a much better and rewarding way
in taking a more methodical approach.
68

FOOD & DRINK
AUGUST 2017 AUGUST | ISSUE 2017 #58 | ISSUE | FOOD #58 & DRINK
Wine offers so many different
flavours, smells and sensations, it
seems a shame not to experience all
that is available.
Take say a third of a glass of the wine you wish
to taste. The flavours of a good wine can last
many minutes and to fully enjoy it takes time and
attention.
1. SEE
Holding the glass sample at an angle preferably
in front of a white sheet of paper, the wine should
look clean and not cloudy, if white, ranging from
water white to a rich golden colour. If red, from a
purple ruby colour to garnet. Pure brown could
mean it is old.
2. SWIRL
Being careful not to spill any, give the glass a
good swirl, this releases more of the aroma.
3. SMELL
Does it smell OK? If it smells like old potato
peelings, wet cardboard or rags, it is said to be
corked – don’t drink it or cook with it. From the
aromas given it is possible to judge the age of the
wine, the grape variety and the method used to
make the wine etc. Describing the smell is what
most people find difficult. Is it Strawberry, spice,
vanilla, apricots etc. Try to do it, whatever you say
is right as you are the only one with your sense
of smell.
4. SIP
Take a slow sip, do not swallow but hold the wine
in your mouth and chew it. The 10,000 or so taste
buds in your mouth all want their own taste. If
you can (practice over a sink) open your mouth
and take in air for a gurgling sound. This aerates
the wine and releases more aromas. Is it sweet or
savoury? What sort of fruit does it taste like? Has
it got spicy, peppery or meaty flavours?
5. SPIT OR SWALLOW
After dispensing with the wine, drinking or
spitting, how long does the taste linger in your
mouth? Usually the longer the better, anything
longer than 15 seconds is good.
MAKE A NOTE
It is useful to make notes of what you experience
so as to follow up at a later date.
UPDATE FROM THE BECCLES LIDO...
The summer season is well
underway at Beccles Lido and
already more than 18,000
visitors have enjoyed a swim or
a day out at the heated openair
swimming pool, compared
with just 10,000 at the same
time last year.
One of the big attractions has always
been the giant inflatable aquarun, so
there was much excited anticipation
with the arrival of a brand new inflatable
in May.
Whilst this has remained hugely popular
it was not quite as challenging as hoped
for, so it has been back to the factory for
some exciting adaptations and is back,
bigger and more awesome than ever for
the school holidays.
The inflatable is in the pool everyday
between 1-3pm during the school
holidays (subject to weather and visitor
numbers – so do please call the Lido on
01502 713297 in advance).
AUGUST AUGUST 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #58 | #58 LIFESTYLE
Meanwhile, behind the scenes the Lido team is busy raising
over £100,000 for a new toilet block.
In addition to their monthly lottery, where you could win
up to £250 (application forms available online or from the
Lido), and events like the Beccles Beer Festival scheduled
for 17-19 November, they have launched an online
fundraising page.
This has already raised in excess of £4,500 to bring the
grand total raised so far to nearly £50,000!
You can make a donation by visiting
www.VirginMoneyGiving/NewToilets or send your cheque
to 6 Cromwell Close, Beccles NR34 9XE.
If you would like to find out more about the project or to
download a lottery application form, then please visit
Beccles Lido has been voted one of the 50 best things to do in Suffolk!
STAYCATION
There’s no place
like home
I don’t know about you, but I can’t
quite believe its August already.
BY RUBY REED
However, I am very much
enjoying the weather at
the moment. I even took
some cheeky annual
leave to… well, relax
at home.
I had a staycation and I highly
recommend it.
Sure, I love jetting off
somewhere just as much as
much as anyone else but there
are some definite pros to
having a few days off without
actually upping sticks.
Firstly no arrangements for
hotels, travel or pets had to
be made. So imagine the expenses of these, and now
spend them on local days out, experiences, dinner at
your favourite restaurant or a takeaway!
One of my favourite days out is still the zoo. So, that’s
exactly what I dedicated one of my staycation days to.
Think of all your favourite activities to do and draw up
a weekly schedule. Some options include the beach,
shopping centres, heritage sites and sports centres. An
obvious advantage of visiting attractions on a weekday
is they are not quite as crowded as they would be on
the weekend.
A local attraction that is perfect for one of your
staycation days is Thetford forest. Whether you are
looking for a leisurely stroll in the endless woodland,
the perfect picnic hotspot or outdoor activities such
as canoeing or GoApe! (segways and more) Thetford
forest has your covered.
82

AUGUST AUGUST 2017 | 2017 ISSUE | ISSUE #58 | #58 LIFESTYLE
Heritage sites are also
relaxing and interesting
ways to spend a day.
East Anglia offers us many
of these experiences. From
Abbey Gardens & Ickworth
House, Bury St Edmunds to
Wimpole Farm & Anglesey
Abbey, Cambridgeshire.
Spend the day exploring
beautiful architecture and
culture- It’s educational for
the kids too!
Another active day would
be visiting your local sports
centre (rain or shine!).
Give them a call and see
what courts and sessions
they have available. Book
an hour or two and burn off some energy.
Or if it’s a leisurely swim/treatment you’re
after then treat yourself to a spa day.
Don’t forget the evenings during your
staycation. Take turns and book a table at
everyone’s favourite restaurant each night
of the week. An option of the staycation
is you’re never too far away to invite some
friends along for a catch up!
A bonus being no packing was required,
and you got to come back to your own bed
and pets, every night!
Plus, you finally got to do that thing you’ve
wanted to do since last year.
So if you haven’t managed to arrange a
getaway yet this summer, or need another
easy break, take a step back and grab a
few days’ time out - just doing some things
you love, with the people you love.
action in one place.
For the second year running, Coastline were
proud to be invited along by industry leaders 3M
complimented the vehicle’s characteristics
nicely.
WANT A GREAT
FAKE TAN?
Drinking plenty of water,
applying petroleum jelly and
patting yourself with a towel are
just some of the best hacks for
applying streak-free fake tan.
Other tips are for pro-longing your fake tan once
applied, and include things like adding baby
powder to sweaty areas, opting for showers over
baths and avoiding chlorinated swimming pools.
Check out our top fake tan hacks...
PREP TO AVOID PATCHINESS...
Wax or shave at least 24 hours before tanning, to
give your skins pores a chance to close up. It’s also
important to get your nails and hair done before
you tan, as a pedicure (with soaking and scrubbing)
will leave your feet patchy and hair dye will
strip the tan around your hairline. You should also
exfoliate and moisturise 24 hours before you apply
the false tan, to avoid patchiness around your
knees, elbows and any other places where you
have dry skin.
88

HAIR & BEAUTY
AUGUST 2017 AUGUST | ISSUE 2017 #58 | ISSUE | HAIR #58 & BEAUTY
AVOID HAIR REMOVAL CREAMS...
Avoid using hair removal creams when you have
fake tan on, as this will strip the tan from the skin,
which will cause an uneven, patchy mess.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER...
According to research, it’s important to drink
plenty of water when you are fake tanning, as
the DHA ingredient that’s found in most tans can
dehydrate your skin.
DO YOUR FACE FIRST...
If you’re spot-prone, avoid using the same fake
tanner on your body that you do on your face.
Instead, use one which has hydrating ingredients,
which will stop the tan from clogging your pores.
The tan on your face should also much lighter
than on your body, so avoid putting too much
on. This is because it’ll end up looking too dark
against your skin once you have added colour to
your face with makeup.
AVOID BATHS AND SWIMMING POOLS...
The less time spent in water, the better for your
fake tan. Chlorine is known for stripping off your
false tan, so avoid spending too much time in
swimming pools and Jacuzzis.
REMOVE SPLOTCHY TAN WITH MILK...
If you’re tan has become patchy over time,
remove it by using a homemade mask made from
lemon and milk. Simply add a lemon slice to a
glass of milk and apply to your skin. Leave it on
for 15 mins before rinsing off. This should remove
your streaky tan in no time.
WEAR GLOVES...
When applying fake tan, always make sure you
wear some disposable gloves. This will stop it
from streaking and will avoid those dreaded
orange hands.
APPLY PETROLEUM JELLY...
Many beauticians who do spray tans professionally
rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly to dry
areas on your body before applying fake tan.
This includes places like your elbows, knees and
the back of your heels, and it is done to prevent
darker stains on these areas.
NEVER RUB WITH A TOWEL...
After showering, never rub yourself with your
towel, as this will only strip off your tan. Instead,
pat yourself down with your towel until your skin
dries.
ADD SOME BABY POWDER...
If you’re heading out in the sun whilst wearing
fake tan, always apply some baby powder to
any part of your body that sweats more than the
others. This will stop your fake tan from stripping
in the areas where your body collects the most
moisture.
AUGUST 2017 AUGUST | ISSUE 2017 #58 | | ISSUE HAIR #58 & BEAUTY
Meet our unique new sunbed…
SK has recently introduced a brand new, state of the
art vertical sunbed to the spa. It is already receiving
a lot of attention and a lot of questions - so we
thought we would fill you in on all the details.
WHY IS IT CONSIDERED ‘STATE OF THE ART’?
This futuristic and new tanning concept is at the
forefront of the very latest in skincare tanning
technology.
Firstly, the lamps are bright pink, not like the usual
blue lamps, and these ‘Collatan Maxi Twist 0.3
Sunbed Lamps’ provide you with more than just
a beautiful tan. The pink lamps contain four major
wavelengths; UVA, UVB, Red Light therapy & Blue
Light therapy. UVA rays work deeper down and
are responsible for the bronzing of the skin, UVB
stimulates the melanin in the skin and adds essential
vitamin D, the happy vitamin, which is important for
healthy bones.
The Red Light and Blue Light therapy is where the
magic comes in and are both becoming increasingly
popular in facials and skin care treatments, as
they are renowned for their anti-bacterial, antiinflammatory
and scar healing properties.
Red Light stimulates collagen production to help
plump fine lines and wrinkles, for rejuvenated,
younger looking skin. The addition of Blue Light
Therapy purifies the skin, and is clinically proven to
help treat acne and scarring. Using these lamps
creates a tanning process which is kinder to
your skin and will leave you with a deeper and
longer-lasting tan, whilst achieving blemish
free, beautifully glowing skin.
BUT AREN’T SUNBEDS BAD FOR YOUR SKIN?
Here at SK, we care about your skin’s health,
which is why this sunbed has been carefully
selected to be used in our spa. When used
safely and appropriately, our sunbed can leave
you with a healthy, flawless, glow.
Everybody is different, and we must take that
into account, so before you use the sunbed you
will have a quick discussion with a therapist, so
we can advise and tailor your sunbed sessions
to suit your skin. Some very fair skin types
should not use any sunbed, and if that is the
case we will tell you.
We will also discuss what you want to achieve,
whether it be a preholiday tan, maintaining
your summer holiday glow, or to treat your
skin with the benefits of the Red & Blue Light
Therapy – we can then determine how long
your sessions can be and how often you should
use it.
Chanel
NO.1’S
Yes that’s right, Bury St Edmunds has finally got a Chanel
counter situated in Debenhams, next to Dior. This makes me
extremely happy! But my bank balance quiver in fear.
AUGUST 2017 AUGUST | ISSUE 2017 #58 | ISSUE | HAIR #58 & BEAUTY
Check out the new Chanel counter
situated in Bury St Edmunds
Debenhams...
One of my favourite things this summer
is Chanel’s Hydra Beauty Essence Mist.
Not only is it refreshing in the heat, with
an ultra fine mist, it hydrates, protects
and energises your skin, any time of day
or night, make up or no make up. This
offers comfort for your skin no matter
what the changing environment is.
Hydra Beauty Micro Crème is the new
and improved hydrating moisturiser,
still this the same amazing smell as the
normal one, but with the added bonus
of giving 24-hour hydration.
It is first of its kind with camellia microdroplets,
which at the heart of the
camellia extract is preserved in its purest
form. When applying the moisturiser
the micro-droplets fuse with the skin,
penetrating deep within the skin.
In the Summer I love a gloss on the lips,
or a moisturised lipstick and
Chanel’s Rouge Coco Gloss’s are
a favourite of mine.
With a non-sticky, gel texture it
melts onto the lips. I also have
to mention just how beautiful
Chanel’s individual eye shadows
are!
Highly pigmented, buttery
texture and the colour goes on
as you see it in the pallet. They
are buildable to give a lighter
dusting/blending or an intense
block colour. I advise you to go
and have a look, the yellow is
stunning!
As its Chanel, I cannot go
without mentioning a fragrance.
My favourite being COCO
Mademoiselle.
For more Chanel products
and information you can find
it all at the Chanel counter in
Debenhams, with the lovely
account manager Katie to help
you.
BUSINESS FEATURE
Focus on
LANGLEYS
Established by Simon Langley in
1987, Langleys Conservatories
and Windows present many
bespoke services and products.
From Windows, Doors and Conservatories to
Extensions and Upgrades, as well as offering
a full in house planning and building control
service.
With 17 years of positive customer feedback
reports, collected through the Consumer
Protection Association, (an FCA regulated
body) Langleys pride themselves in
delivering quality work with excellent
client service, providing insurance backed
guarantees along with deposit insurance
through the CPA.
Simon’s son Jules came into the business
6 years ago in is now involved in running
all installations, so Langleys is well and
truly a family run venture. All of the fitting
staff are directly employed by Langleys
and have (or are in the process) of serving
an apprenticeship in either carpentry
and joinery or window and conservatory
installations.
comprehensive, fully itemised quotation.
You wont be under any pressure or find
any false sales gimmicks.
Whilst Langleys does not operate a show
room facility, Simon prefers to show case
their existing installations to prospective
clients. They also have a large range of
sample goods that can be brought to
your property where you can see how
they will look when in place.
Simon undertakes all of the selling but never
sells on the day. Instead his approach is to
give the customer time after his initial visit
to think about the solutions he offers, in
which time he will prepare and send back a
Their very large portfolio can be viewed
as well as customer testimonials and
satisfaction surveys.
MODULAR LIVING WITH WILLOW & HALL
4 Seater Chaise Sofa from £1,930/ Sofa Bed £2,090
MODULAR LIVING...
Make the most of your living
space with one of Willow &
Hall’s brand new modular sofas.
It’s a common misconception that large
furniture dominates smaller spaces, when
in actual fact it can enhance the space by
defining it and making it feel inviting.
Opting for a corner or chaise sofa is a great
way to fill your living space and create
a focal point, whilst ensuring plenty of
seating for guests without the need for
several pieces of furniture.
Willow & Hall’s latest modular designs are
also armless ensuring that they are even
more accessible for smaller spaces.
Offering a wide choice of configurations,
ranging from a single seat sofa to an 8
seat corner sofa, the new collection offers
maximum versatility, with some designs
also providing extra storage space tucked
away underneath your seat.
Each model is available as a sofa and/
or sofa bed and can be upholstered in a
choice of over 100 fabrics and leathers
3 Seater Sofa from £1,025 / Sofa Bed £1,205
TOP TIPS...
• To be sure that your new sofa
will fit into your room, make a
template from newspaper or use
masking tape to mark out the
amount of space it requires.
• Check that you have enough
room to navigate around the sofa
and you can open doors and
drawers once it’s in place.
• Finally, don’t forget to measure
the height of the area where your
sofa will be positioned to ensure it
can be manoeuvred into place.
GETTING INTO LATE SUMMER
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : Set up an automatic
watering system for your vegetable plot
August is one of the hottest
months of the year, making
watering essential. Try to use
grey water wherever possible,
especially as water butts may be
running low if it has been a dry
summer.
August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might
need to enlist the help of friends and family to look
after the garden while you are away.
When you are at home, take the time to prune
summer-flowering shrubs.
Boring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders,
the vegetable garden and all your pots and
containers. Little and often will reduce what will
become a Herculean task if left to spiral out
of control.
Weeds not only look messy but use valuable
moisture in the ground.
The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch
hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface.
Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on
the surface dry out and die in the warmth.
The latest from
COPELAND INTERIORS
BY CLARE HINDLE
This month, I thought we would look at
some examples of difficult windows.
Not all houses are designed with
simple, straightforward windows and
this is where our expertise comes in!
The high up arch window (left)
The arched windows in this new build were a real feature, but the
question was, ‘how do you dress them without taking any of the
feature away and to have them still be useable’?
The answer, to do a template of the window and make
the curtains fit the shape of the window. Held back
with a pair of tiebacks, which are simply undone to let
the curtains draw over the window.
The very high window (right)
This window was in a bedroom of a really old
converted French farm building.
The problem was client needed to shut the light out as
the sun came streaming through in the morning, but
there was no way she would be able to reach anything
that high up.
The solution, here a simple roman blind, which was
interlined and blackout, was installed with a remote
control to enable it to go up and down. The client
could lay in bed and point the remote at the window
and decide how far up or down they wanted it
to be.
Bay window (above)
This bay window had the added difficulty of a
bench seat inside the bay – ‘so how do we make a
statement that is also practical’?
Phone
Email
info@copelandinteriors.co.uk
Website
Curtains would have been too fussy around the
www.copelandinteriors.co.uk
bay, so the answer was to do insert roman blinds.
The knack here, is to make sure you choose a fabric
that can be well patterned matched so it continues
around the bay - the expertise is in the making also!
Co-ordinating the fabrics on the bench seat with the blinds made a stunning feature.
Georgian curved room and windows (below)
This was a beautiful room where the end wall was a complete semi-circle and the windows curved
round too. There was added difficulties, in that in-between the windows, were marbled columns and
decorative mirrors, so the curtains could only go
so far. The client really wanted to make a feature
of the windows with her curtains.
So here we made curved boards on site to fit
especially into the window recesses. The valances
and curtains were attached to the curved boards,
getting the exact measurements and shape were
crucial. The finished look was amazing, as was the
rest of the room by the time I had finished with it!
Like anything, when something is not simple, but
you want it to look its best, it is always worth
getting in a company that has experience and
knowledge so that costly mistakes don’t happen!
Local businessman celebrates
25 years of business
Local businessman,
Andy Goodridge celebrates
25 years of business in
Bury St Edmunds.
Andy shares his business
journey so far, and his
hopes for the future, as
his 3 businesses; Bury Golf
Range, Pot Black Sports
Bar and Slates Restaurant &
Carvery continue to thrive.
Andy Goodridge, pictured at
Bury Golf Range, Rushbrooke Lane
THE BEGINNING
Andy Goodridge was introduced
to golf by his father at age 12 and
joined Bury St Edmunds golf club as
a junior member.
A job in the pro shop working for Pro
Chris Kivelan and in 1983 he won the
Suffolk Junior Championship.
Encouraged to join the Professional
Golfers Association when he left
school, with a passion for the game,
he moved to Thorpeness Golf Club
to train with Ex European tour player
Robin Mann.
Andy missed not being able to play
in amateur events, and feeling poorly
advised to join the PGA, at such a
young age he made the tough decision
to leave the Professional Golfers
Association at that time.
After gaining his amateur status back
Andy went to work with his father in
the butchery trade before finding a
job in the leisure industry, his boss at
the time could see his potential and
offered him a managerial position at
112
Bury Bowl.
BURY GOLF RANGE
He wanted to continue with his leisure
experience, but wanted to combine
his love of golf, so he researched golf
driving ranges and started looking for
land.
Even after being told it would never
work, Andy put together a business
plan, 1st of August 1992 Bury Golf
Range first opened its doors.
Andy has employed various teaching
professionals over the years to offer golf
lessons to his golf range customers and
successfully went on to win the Suffolk
Foursomes title with one of them -
Kevin Golding.
TRAGEDY STRIKES
2001 Andy was a victim of a glass attack
leaving him partially blind in his left eye.
2002 felt the right time for Andy to gain
his professional status back, to be able
to teach golf to others and take on new
assistants to the game to train under
his wing. Andy gained the EGTF and
in 2006 his PGA qualifications after
completing a three years degree course
and playing ability test.

ACTION MAN DOES
FIGHT KLUB
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Following my two week all
inclusive vacation in the States,
if this body was found on a beach
it would be surrounded by a team
from Green Peace trying to roll
me back into the sea!
So it’s time to get my fitness back,
I need to fight the fat and kick the
candy. There’s no better place to do
that than Fight Klub!
The high intensity, Martial Arts styled,
drum’n’bass fuelled workout, was actually
founded over 10 years ago by former
professional swimmer Troy Dureh, but it’s
popularity has exploded over the past 18
months making it one of the fasted growing
exercise classes in the country and now
boasts over 500 locations in the UK.
A combination of punches and kicks to a
number of punch bags shared in small groups
will have you moving throughout the hour
long class.
Guidance is delivered constantly by your
instructor / MC along to the tune of your
favourite drum’n’bass classics, all combined
with series of disco lights which really helps
deliver the nightclub party feel good factor.
The group is encouraged to whoop and holla
along to the instructions and beats, which
only adds to the already fever pitch energy in
the room, it is infectious and you can’t help
but feel motivated and really get stuck in.
Do you struggle with self motivation during a
workout?
Well you certainly won’t at Fight Klub! In fact
I guarantee you’ll want to go again and take
your friends along with you to join the party!
You’re too busy raving to even think about
the workout you enduring, I didn’t actually
feel too overworked or out of breathe yet my
sweat filled Action Man t-shirt tells a different
story.
The class delivers a fun yet thorough fat
burning cardiovascular workout without the
impact that a tarmac pounding run might,
perfect for anyone looking to start a new
regime.
For my taster I joined my local group Fight
BY MIDDLE SEA MUSIC
MUSIC
Middle Sea Music was born in the
summer of 2012 as a live music
night at Walberswick’s infamous
Studio on the coast of Suffolk,
and quickly grew into an active
and supportive community of
musicians and fans. This month
MSM feature Matt Shepherd.
Matt Shepherd is a singer songwriter
based in Suffolk.
Matt’s original compositions blend
lyrical insight with melodic acoustic
intimacy. His debut album ‘The Village
Idiot’ was launched in August 2006 at
Gig In The Park with great acclaim and
interest.
You can see Matt at some of our shows
coming up this summer to listen to his
music at www.mattshepherdmusic.com
See you next month
Avery Goodman - Head of MSM
Bounce recommends... Matt Shepherd “All This
Talk” track 1
His latest album ‘All This Talk’ has a
slightly different sound, but his songs
still maintain a sense of story telling
about his life journey so far. The track
‘Hangover’ has lyrics that are deeply
emotive, you can really feel the song.
Matt teaches music in his spare time
and has even given lessons to the now
very well known Ed Sheeran.
THEATRE
ROYAL
Mrs Kay’s unruly Progress Class is
unleashed from the classroom for
a day to pile into a bus for a oneoff
school trip in the Theatre Royal
Bury St Edmund’s latest musical
spectacular.
Royal, allowing a young cast of 12 – 19 year
olds to participate alongside professional cast
and crew.
David said, ‘I’m in the fortunate position of
working with fantastically talented young
people and I’m always looking for the next big
challenge to help them learn and flourish.
Our Day Out – the Musical will transport you
to the school days of lollipop men, packed
lunches and young love as this action packed
rewrite of the hit 1977 TV show is brought
to the Theatre Royal stage
(Thursday August 24 –
Saturday 2 September).
This hilarious and
heartwarming tale from
the multi award-winning
playwright of Educating Rita
and Blood Brothers sees a talented young
cast from Suffolk working with professional
actors singing and dancing rings around their
fraught teachers.
Directed by Karen Simpson, Director/CEO,
and David Whitney, who runs the youth
programme, the week long run will be a
culmination of the Summer School at Theatre
I thought what better way than Our Day Out –
the Musical. It has an epic quality whilst at the
same time a huge heart and great pathos.
Willy Russell is a master at combining
humour and wit with a real poignant
undertone in his pieces, we felt this
was the perfect choice for a summer
production.’
It’s a unique opportunity, which
doesn’t come along often, to perform
in a fantastic play and it promises to
be exhilarating entertainment (August 24 –
September 2).
Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds are building
a following and reputation for excellent home
grown productions, Northanger Abbey,
recently completed a National tour to rave
reviews.
ENGAGEMENT SHOOT - GET YOUR DOG INVOLVED TOO...
As you know the camera loves
me baby!
So, I was pretty chuffed when I got taken on
a photoshoot a few weeks back, lead by the
fabulous Tom Soper, a local photographer from
Bury. We set off at dusk in a secret location to
search for some rural spots.
It was all going fine until, them sheep! Now…
don’t get me wrong, I love all of the world’s
creatures, but I am changing my mind about
sheep. I have never been so terrified in my life.
On this occasion (whilst they were happy posing
away in front of the camera) they forgot about
poor ol’ me, tied up to a fence, which was about
to become invaded by a flock of Mrs Baa-Baa
and her twenty friends.
excited before the shoot.
PLANNING: Plan to include them in half of the
shoot (at the most).
KEEP YOUR DOG’S PERSONALITY IN MIND:
Don’t stress us out!
SERIOUSLY, DON’T FORGET THE POOP BAGS:
Need I say more?
TREATS AND TOYS: Both toys and treats are a
great way for us to get the attention of us pups.
Lastly, have patience!
Keep up to date with my antics on Twitter @
bouncearchie and see all of my pics from my
photoshoot experience.
Anyway I digress, the point to my story this
month is… get us involved! Us four legged friends
love being wherever you are, doing whatever
you’re doing. Its very common now a days for
your dog to appear in an engagement shoot
(after all we are a big part of the family)!
Here are my top tips of how to get your pal
involved:
WEAR THEM OUT FIRST: You don’t want us too
