malibusurfsidenews.com news Malibu surfside news | August 3, 2017 | 11 CineMalibu to take outdoor movie-goers ‘under the sea’ Submitted by the City of Malibu The City of Malibu will hold a free outdoor screening of the family-friendly animated classic “The Little Mermaid” (rated G) at Malibu Bluffs Park on Saturday, Aug. 12. The movie begins at sunset and pre-event activities, including food trucks, an art activity and giveaways start at 7 p.m. A guest princess will visit at 7:15 p.m. Food will be available for purchase from Woody’s Grill food truck, featuring tacos, sliders and veggie nachos. Apollo’s Expresso and Shave Ice will also be selling shaved ice and coffee beverages. The Bay Foundation and the Malibu Environmental and Sustainability Department will provide ocean conservation information. Instructors from Parker Anderson Enrichment and Sandbox 4 Kids will have demonstrations for children. Attendees who show they follow the Malibu Community Services Department on social media will receive a free raffle ticket for prizes and gift certificates to Woody’s Grill, Apollo’s and Pure Barre Malibu, as well as City of Malibu swag bags. This event is part of the CineMalibu movie series, which has been presenting outdoor movie nights since 2005. CineMalibu movies are free and open to all, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early and bring blankets and chairs. Attendees may bring in outside food or purchase food from on-site food trucks. Alcohol and barbecues are not allowed on park grounds. Agencies capture alleged car thief in Malibu Lauren Coughlin, Editor A July 22 car chase became an on-foot pursuit after the driver spun out on Broad Beach Road in Malibu. California Highway Patrol Officer Victor Varela said the vehicle was initially pulled over in Ventura County, near Neptune’s Net, for speeding. “The officer ran the vehicle’s VIN and it came back stolen and the guy took off,” Varela said. The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department was informed that the offender was headed toward Malibu around 7 a.m., said Sgt. B. Patin. It was around that same time that the man crashed the stolen car and ran. Varela said a passenger stayed in the car. A Ventura County Sheriff’s Office helicopter attempted to aid in the search for the suspect, but was unable to find them, said Media Relations Officer Capt. Garo Kuredjian. Both individuals were eventually located and arrested by CHP officials on charges of evading police and vehicle theft, Varela said. Lauren Coughlin, Editor A 68-year-old man died July 25 following a car incident on Malibu Canyon Road. The man was Tzemach Sam Kalfon, of Encino, said LA County coroner spokesperson Ed Winter. Kalfon’s death was ruled accidental and was the result of multiple traumatic injuries, Winter said. Kalfon was pronounced dead at the scene, which was one mile south of the tunnel, at 7:45 p.m., Winter said. Lanes were reopened by 12:11 a.m. July 26, according to a tweet from the LA County California Highway Patrol public information officer.
