Sheriff’s department
appeals Supreme Court’s
Brady decision
The LA County Sheriff’s
Department expects to seek
legal clarity and guidance
on its obligations under
the U.S. Supreme Court’s
Brady decision, according
to a July 26 release from
the Los Angeles County
Sheriffs Department Information
Bureau.
The decision (known
as “Brady vs. Maryland”)
requires prosecutors in a
criminal case to disclose
exculpatory evidence to
the defense. Sheriff Jim
McDonnell stated that the
Brady decision and subsequent
litigation and legal
opinions have failed to offer
clarity on exactly how
to reconcile the conflict
between state law which
states that peace officer
personnel files are confidential
and shall not be
disclosed in any criminal or
civil proceeding except by
court order, and the duty of
the Department to disclose
information under Brady.
“This is about respecting
the rights of peace officers,
and preserving the integrity
of criminal cases,” McDonnell
stated. “The legal process,
is just that, part of a
process where the courts
will make a number of determinations
that will guide
how we move forward.”
Senate Bill 756 is the first
measure Stern has sent
to the governor and had
signed into law. It will go
into effect Jan. 1, 2018.
SB 756 will provide restitution
for mental health
services to young sexual
abuse victims. It was signed
into law July 21 by Gov.
Jerry Brown after receiving
unanimous approval from
members of both the State
Assembly and Senate.
In 2014, 15 victims were
molested by their soccer
coach in LA County, a release
on the new bill stated.
Several of the victims were
unable to receive restitution.
Currently, there are approximately
700 cases
pending in LA County
alone that could be eligible
for restitution under SB
756.
“Our kids deserve better,”
Stern said. “Victims
of sexual violence are being
denied justice under
our current system. SB 756
will assist kids in getting
the help they deserve. I applaud
Gov. Brown for signing
this important measure
into law.”
SB 756 was co-sponsored
by the Los Angeles
District Attorney’s Office
and the Crime Victims Action
Alliance.
Malibu named top
honeymoon destination
Last month, travel site
TripAdvisor released a list
of the Top 15 honeymoon
destinations in the U.S.,
and Malibu made the cut.
“Whatever Malibu calls
to mind — whether celebrity
sightings, sizable surf,
or endless rows of palm
trees — this dreamy small
town was practically made
for newlyweds,” the article
stated. “With romantic activities
from wine tasting
to horseback riding on the
beach, it’s easy to see why
it’s one of the top honeymoon
destinations in the
US.”
The post went on to recommend
shopping in Malibu
Country Mart, dining at
Malibu Cafe or Duke’s, and
partaking in activities such
as surfing, hiking or scuba
diving.
The list was based on
property reviews from users
of TripAdvisor Rentals.
Community donation aids
Malibu neonatal doctor,
team at CHLA
A donation to Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles will
go a long way for Malibu’s
State Parks Public Safety
Superintendent Tony Hoffman.
“I felt that I should show
my support as I do every
year,” Hoffman said. “It’s
not a one-time deal. We
know there’s more than one
way to save lives.”
The American Red Cross
lists Hoffman as a 33-time
donor, he stated.
Silverio Luna, whose
brother is a junior lifeguard
at Leo Carrillo, also donated
for his second year.
Philippe Friedlich and his
team.
Friedlich — the chief of
Children’s Hospital Los
Angeles’ Division of Neonatology,
Fetal and Neonatal
Institute co-director, and
professor of clinical pediatrics
and surgery at Keck
School of Medicine at the
University of Southern
California — will be the
inaugural holder of the Pollitt
Family Endowed Chair,
which was created because
of a $3 million donation
from philanthropists Teresa
and Byron Pollitt.
“This gift will give the
Fetal and Neonatal Institute
more opportunity to care
for and improve the health
of our youngest, most vulnerable
patients,” Friedlich
said. “With this new support,
the Institute will hire
an epidemiologist, provide
greater support for families
and engage government
agencies to improve the
care provided for patients
treated through the Fetal
and Neonatal Institute.”
The Pollitt family has
been involved with CHLA
for more than 30 years.
making sub sandwiches for
the participants. Snyder
said he started the drive for
the Angeles District State
Park Lifeguards in 1998 at
the Sycamore Cove location
in Ventura County. The
location shifted a few years
back after major storms destroyed
the quaint location.
Lifeguards from the Leo
towers showed up in the
latter part of the day after
their shifts ended, doing
their part to save lives even
while off duty.
