malibusurfsidenews.com Life & Arts Malibu surfside news | August 3, 2017 | 23 Ukulele group shares in beloved cultural custom Barbara Burke Freelance Reporter They gathered in glee as they have each month for 12 years, an extended ‘ohana taking time to share and enjoy aloha and their Hawaiian culture, play the ukulele and have repast. “It is our kanikapila, or Hawaiian jam session,” said the event hostess Wailani Oherlihy, a longtime Malibuite. “Our ukulele group is called Ka Mauna ‘O Ukulele which means, ‘Our sound resonates off the mountains and gets carried on to future generations.’ “People come from San Diego, Ventura, the Valley, and of course, Malibu and Hawaii. Ages range from 8 years to 92 years old.” Attending the kanikapila is an absolute joy. Smiling, the group settles in, ukuleles in hand and music before them. They joyfully prepare their instruments and then launch into playing. Swaying with the music, intently looking at their notes, the rhythm of the islands transcends the Oherlihy home. Like Pacific waves lapping against the beach, the tones of the instruments gently undulate throughout the home. Wailani lithely danced the hula to “Pua ‘Ahihi” by Maddy Lam. “The song describes the āhihi blossom with an underlying kaona meaning desirous of deep love that is made out of love like a lei that is so beautifully twined together with a fragrance that teases your heart,” Oherlihy said. Kaona is a Hawaiian word referring to the hidden meaning of a word or phrase. Oherlihy’s willowy body swayed in harmony with the music as she elegantly moved her arms and hips. She was one with the music and rhythm, the perfect embodiment of fluidity and grace. Attendees oohed and awed as she performed. “That was lovely,” an attendee murmured as the song ended. A large part of Hawaiian culture is gathering together to share life’s moments. On July 23, the group celebrated Tag Taguiped’s 82nd birthday. Taguiped’s love for ukulele playing is patently obvious as he strums his instrument. Beaming, he played along with the group, his face intent on achieving musical and performance perfection. He’s obviously a favorite of the group. “Playing ukulele has helped him survive cancer,” Oherlihy said. “He used to kanikapila with my parents.” The healing power of music and of shared love pervades this lovely gathering. The attendees took a break and enjoyed a feast of traditional Hawaiian fare, including poi and chili served over white rice. For dessert there was coconut cake, delicious and moist. “The food brought on a monthly basis changes depending on what people feel like when they come,” Oherlihy said. “This tradition of kanikapila is historical in Hawaii. It is an impromptu jam session which started as a family gathering. My grandparents did it and my parents did it and here we are continuing the tradition. Kani means sound and pila means any string instrument.” America is a land blending many cultures and traditions. Wherever people go, they want to keep their cultural traditions. At the Oherlihys once a month, attendees gather, feeling the aloha, enjoying the ukulele and sharing life’s moments and joys. Their doing so makes Malibu even more special.
