Biographical Notes<br />
Murillo, Bartolomé Esteban (Seville, 1618–Seville, 1682). <strong>The</strong> great<br />
17 th -century Spanish painter, Murillo primarily painted Biblical or religious<br />
themes and on occasion genre themes of every day life.<br />
Poussin, Nicolas (Les Andylys 1594–Rome 1665). Poussin was the great<br />
French classicist who painted religious and mythological subjects, as well<br />
as landscapes.<br />
Raphael (Raffaello Sanzo) (Urbino, 1483–Rome, 1520). <strong>The</strong> renowned<br />
Florentine, originally from Urbino, Raphael was one of the great Italian<br />
Renaissance painters.<br />
Rubens, Petrus-Paulus (Siegen, 1577–Antwerp, 1640). Known for<br />
his use of vibrant color and use of light, Rubens was the great Flemish<br />
Baroque painter.<br />
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) (Pieve di Cadore, c1488–Venice, 1576). Called the<br />
greatest Venetian Renaissance painter, this student of Giorgione was known<br />
for his bold and rich use of color with expressive brush work.<br />
van Rijn, Rembrandt Harmensz (Leiden, 1606–Amsterdam, 1669). One of<br />
the great artists in history, Rembrandt was a Dutch painter who was a portrait<br />
artist and created scenes Biblical, mythological, and historical narratives.<br />
Vermeer, Johannes or Jan (Delft, 1632–Delft, 1675). Very little is known<br />
about this Dutch genre painter who was known for his sensitive treatment of<br />
both light and color.<br />
Veronese, Paolo (Paolo Caliari) (Verona, 1528–Venice, 1588. Born in<br />
Verona, but active as a Venetian painter, he was one of the great Italian<br />
decorative painters.<br />
Watteau, Jean-Antoine (Valenciennes, 1684–Nogent-sur-Marne, 1721).<br />
This French rococo artist painted � gures in romanticized and idealized<br />
settings.<br />
102
