The Chairman's Notes
Today we extend a warm welcome to The Paycare
Ground to the players, officials and supporters of St
Mar9ns FC. Win, lose or draw our visitors will be most
welcome to join us in the clubhouse for hospitality.
The last 14 days have been extremely busy for
everyone. Firstly we were delighted to hear the news
that we were successful in two grant applica9ons. We
have received £1k from the Comic Relief Community Cash Fund towards
new tables and chairs and also received confirma9on that we have been
awarded £10k from Big Lo>ery Fund towards the upgrade and
refurbishment of the clubhouse toilets.
We also published our 5 Year Plan. It shows our priori9es over 5 years
including mee9ng Step 6 and Step 5 ground grading requirements, seBng
up junior/youth teams and laying out our financial plans. The plan is
published on the website but paper copies are available behind the bar.
Also we had to make sure everything was ready on and off the field for last
Saturday. Off the field the club house was spruced up with rubbish
removed, carpets wet cleaned, minor repairs undertaken and woodwork
wiped down. Lynne and Garry Hale did a fantas9c job refurbishing the
home dressing room, which now looks an absolute picture. Simon Cox did
a magnificent job upda9ng the website and producing last week’s
programme. Gil Preece, Dave Steventon and others have been brilliant in
preparing and maintaining the pitch, grounds and surrounding areas.
On the playing side Andy and his team worked their socks off to sign
players, organise training, sort out tracksuits, polo tops etc, finalise squad
selec9on and get everything prepared for the first League game.
I am proud and privileged to be Chairman of this club, everyone pulled
together to be absolutely spot on last Saturday. Everyone’s efforts were
rewarded with a big a>endance, a hard fought 1-0 win against a very good
Old Wulfs team and plenty of excellent feedback from everyone.
View from the Dugout
The game on Saturday was a good
contest end to end at times and
would have been a good watch for
the neutral fan. I was very impressed
with the Old Wulfs side they have
some good players and are well
drilled and organised, also they
move the ball around park really
well. They were unlucky to leave The
Paycare Ground empty handed but
that’s football. `
Aaron Morris “Mozza” kept us in the
game on three occasions he was
simply brilliant on Saturday. All the work he has been doing in preseason
with Goal Keeping Coach Shaun Bolton is now starting to
show. I was pleased with the result, at times we played some good
stuff. We have a NO EXUSES policy in the squad, every player
gave their all on the pitch, which is what I demand, we had to dig in
at times and showed a resilient stubborn side to our game which
was pleasing to see. We can’t always have the ball, but it’s how we
react when we lose it that’s key, this is a tough league and at times
this season there will be games like the one on last Saturday where
we have to adapt and find a way to win.
Today we play St Martins we know they have quality in their squad
and we have to be focused and ready for the challenge. Despite
their opening day defeat to Bromyard they will be traveling to The
Paycare Ground looking to secure their first three points of the
season. Every game is sure to be hard-fought, so we have to be
focused, correctly prepared and give everything in every game this
season.
For me this game is very unpredictable on paper, which St. Martin’s
team will turn up and how they will set up and play. During the
summer, they have recruited high-calibre players and are a
dangerous side. They have some good attacking players with one in
particular we will need to keep a close eye on. The support from the
Darlaston faithful last week was great and we will need the same
support again this week to secure another three points. I hope you
all enjoy the game, and we will be doing our best to achieve another
win.
What Darlaston Town (1874) FC
means to
Pete Burke
Many, many years ago when I was a boy my father introduced me to
many sports but football was a must every Saturday during the
season – his Wolves passion most weeks but if not the Old Gold then
it was to The City Ground Waverley Road to watch my hometown
team "Darlo". It was a thrill to play a school game there although
being a goalkeeper when defending the Slater Street goal was a
challenge as the slope meant you couldn’t see what was happening in
the other half of the pitch. My father always seemed to have
connections with the Club, mostly via work and as a referee, knowing
players and club officials.
In the early 1980s as my Saturday’s playing rugby began to lessen I
came back to my roots and Darlo footy. I joined the Committee then
was Club Secretary – the taking minutes, not in a dress and high
heels. Getting to know players, sometimes being transport to away
games, manning the bar and sharing meetings with some of today’s
Committee members. My late wife often ended up typing up minutes
as she was more proficient than me!
Times change and so does one’s involvement. I joined Walsall Rugby
Club’s Committee and had the unpopular job of Membership
Secretary. I started to travel to Scotland to watch Stenhousemuir (my
dad had played for the Royal Engineers against them) and was
reunited with the team now known as The New Saints (TNS - League
of Wales champions and regular Champions League qualifiers) having
followed them as a village team where my parents had a caravan.
During those years I always kept up with Darlo footy news though
unable to find time to get to games. In recent years I have cut back
on travelling so Stenny and TNS have been cut back, though being
Walsall RFC’s photographer for the last 8 season’s has kept me busy. I
still managed to watch Darlo games but not as many as I would've
liked.
This coming season I hope to get to more games and even take a few
photos, putting some on Facebook to ignite a spark with local friends
who like me have lost interest in ‘League’ football and try to get them
following grassroots – specifically "The Citizens".
So, with lots of changes on the playing side this season there are new
players, characters, supporters to get to know. Always a friendly club
I have already made new acquaintances and look forward to watching
the Club progress and hopefully support the Club to promotion".
Match Report
Saturday 5th August Kick Off 3 pm
Darlaston Town (1874) 1 Old Wulfrunians 0
The football season got under way at The Paycare Ground with Darlaston
picking up all three points in a tight affair against an excellent Old Wulfs
side. Despite heavy downpours in the morning the game was mostly
played in bright sunshine on a superb playing surface in front of the third
consecutive crowd of more than 100.
Darlaston made a bright
start and had the better
of the early exchanges
with little penetration.
The visitors responded
and quickly asserted
themselves with some
excellent forward play.
The pace and trickery of
man of the match Noah
Diallo and Keenan
Barrett creating real
difficulties for an at
times over worked
Darlaston defence. Diallo
was a thorn in the home team's side all game bringing three excellent
saves from the impressive Aaron Morris in the Darlaston goal. Firstly an
angled shot from 20 yards brought a superb diving save from Morris,
then Morris blocked with his legs as Diallo burst in to the box and the
keeper was again in action with a finger tip save low to his left.
Despite their pressure
the visitors did not have
it all their own way and
some neat flowing
football from the home
side created half
chances for Hayden
Hughes and Scott
Broadway but the
visiting keeper Jamie
Bostock saved easily on
both occasions.
Old Wulfs had the
better of the
8
half with Darlaston fortunate to go into the break all square.
The visitors were made to rue their missed chances as Darlaston
scored the only goal of the game in the first minute of the second
half. With their best move of the game Hughes and Seweryn
Brzostowski combined well on the right to set up Martin Stanton who
slipped past his marker to poke home from 6 yards into the top
corner beyond the advancing Bostock.
The goal gave the home side confidence and the second half was
more evenly contested, both sides playing neat controlled football.
Adam Broom and Jack Rowley were superb at the heart of the Old
Wulfs defence setting up Billy Morgan and Liam McEnoy to make
attacking midfield runs. For the home side Lucas Hough and Ryan
McAllister were rock solid whilst Luke Charlton, Dave Richards and
Ant Follows worked tirelessly in midfield to thwart the visitors
attacking threat whilst also setting up opportunities for Hughes and
Broadway.
As the 2nd half
progressed it
became clear that it
was to be
Darlaston's day and
whilst the visitors
were lively up front,
the Darlaston
defence were
resolute and keeper
Morris
in
magnificent form.
The home side had
the best two
chances of the half
as they looked to extend their lead and put the game beyond the
visitors reach. Firstly Broadway brought the ball down and swivelled
some 25 yards out unleashing a viciously swerving volley which beat
keeper Bostick all ends up before thudding against the cross bar and
rebounding to safety. In the closing minutes Hughes looked to have
settled the game , he out muscled Jack Rowley to get clear in the
box but, to the despair of the Darlaston faithful his 8 yard shot hit
the legs of Bostick.
Some late Old Wulfs pressure was repelled and the home side held
out for the three points.
On this evidence both sides will have a good season with top 6
finishes predicted.
Inside the Changing Room
After the end of last
season, the Club
Committee decided
upon a schedule of
works that needed
completion before the
league season started
on 5th August.
Two of the jobs were
to replace the flooring
and re-paint the home
dressing room. The
flooring was replaced
in July, but during the
week before the
League season started, the paint pots and tape came out to change
the old magnolia and brown colour scheme to a modern Darlaston
Blue and Grey one. The two photographs on this page clearly show
the old and new.
Whilst we talk about home changing rooms, they are in inner
sanctum, the most secretive place in any football club, where no one
dare enter without the express permission of the Manager, not even
the Chairman attempts
to try and get in.
Manager Andy Parkes
has a tried and tested
routine on match day,
he said “All players
must report at least an
hour & half before kickoff.
Players relax by
listening to music
whilst getting
themselves focused
and in the zone for the
match, around 2pm we
see the lads leave the
dressing room ready
16
for the warm up
process to begin.
Players return to the
dressing room, the
final detail, tactics etc
for the game are
discussed. This is the
chance for players to
get rubs and go
through any last
minute rituals before
they enter the tunnel
for kick-off at 3pm”.
The Management
team run a tight ship
which we saw last
week as fines were
issued out for players only 10 seconds late, then they must come
dressed appropriately in club approved clothing, if not you’ve guessed
it another fine, this sounds harsh, it is, but the fines are saved and
will be spent at Christmas or the end of season party.
Whatever happens after this even I don’t know, there is a lot to
assume, but as soon as the door closes at 1 hour 15 minutes before
kick-off that’s it, the world is locked out, it’s just Parkes, his coaches
and the players, no
one dares to try and
get in.
Everything is laid out
for them, kit, drinks,
even fruit, Haribo’s
and sometimes Jaffa
cakes. Thanks to our
Roving Reporter
Nicola Waite these
photographs were
taken before last
week’s game against
Old Wulfrunians to
give you some idea
what is laid out for
the players
A Look Around the League
Each week we will feature what is happening in Division One and in the Leagues.
Last Saturday saw the two former Premier Division teams Gornal Athle9c and
Willenhall Town suffer heavy away defeats. Goals from Tom Bradley, Si Jackson (2) Liam
Bould, Jack Davies and Makhan saw fancied Newport Town win 6-2 against Gornal.
Near neighbours Willenhall Town have had a torrid 9me recently and suffered 5-0 at
the hands of newly promoted Shropshire based Allsco>.
A hat trick from Sam Pearson and goals from Adam Webb and Tom Murphy saw
Kington Town come from 2 goals down to beat Wrens Nest 5-3. On the 3G at Team
Dudley the home side got off to a winning start, a brace apiece from Brad Cox and
Vladut Lungo saw them beat Bustleholme 4-2.
Newly promoted Telford Juniors took the lead from a 48 th minute penalty at Tipton
Sports Academy before goals from Lewis Worsey and former Darlaston midfielder Sam
Hesson saw Tipton Town win 2-1. Worcester Raiders raced into a 3-0 half 9me lead at
home against Wyrley, Anthony Smith Shane Shallcross and Chris Cornes all on the
scoresheet. The visitors made a fist of it in the 2 nd half with two goals but goals from
Paul Smith and Richard Smith made the final score line 5-2 to the home side.
Today’s visitors St Mar9ns fell behind to a first half Bromyard goal before James
Durman equalised. Despite going down to ten men Bromyard got the winner to record
