We’re not in Glencoe anymore
Garden’s Brazilinspired
exhibition
has plantings, chef
series and music
Megan Bernard, Editor
Leave the North Shore
and step into Brazil when
you visit the Chicago Botanic
Garden in Glencoe
this season.
The garden became
more bold, vibrant and
biodiverse on June 15
when its new exhibit “Brazil
in the Garden” opened.
The exhibition includes
native plants from Brazil,
music nights and garden
chef series, among other
exhibitions.
The tribute to the tropics
runs from now until Oct.
15, thanks to two CBG
staff members Andrew
Bunting, assistant director
of the garden and director
of plant collections, and
Tim Pollak, outdoor floriculturist.
Bunting and Pollak were
the masterminds behind
the new garden, which was
the result of a trip to Florida
in 2015.
“Andrew and I made the
trip to Florida to look for
new sources and plants,”
Pollak said. “The Brazil
idea just exploded when
we were down there.
When we got back, we just
thought we were going to
do a couple (flower) beds
of Brazil, but we presented
the idea and it was received
very well.”
The Brazil theme was
inspired by Burle Marx,
the Brazilian landscape
architect whose bold,
modernist style made him
world-famous.
With Marx influence,
Bunting and Pollak sat
down together to design
CBG’s version of a Brazil
garden was not “Americanized,”
Bunting said.
of my job: to look at the
