“Joy – in the fall,
winter, and always in
the mountains where
people are few, wildlife
is abundant and there is
peace in the quiet.”
I’m a Mississippi girl born and bred. In my neck of the woods,
the seasons melded into one another without much fanfare. In
the land of towering pines, green is a year-round color. As fall
transitioned into winter, the wind simply changed directions
prompting the temperature and humidity levels to drop. While we
took to the field for hunting and other outdoor pursuits, our sense
of expectancy tended to come from anticipating the holidays.
Of course, this is in no way bad, but it is very different than my
Rocky Mountain life in Colorado.
The seasons march by in distinct, beautiful tableaus. The
possibility of stalking elk in changing aspens, floating a fly in
the crystalline stream before it turns to ice, hurtling down a ski
slope or shushing through quiet woods on snow shoes makes
my heart smile. Even the anticipation brings joy.
I found my place.
And the wonderful thing about places of joy is that no one’s
is exactly the same. For some, joy abides in the fertile plains
of the Midwest, along New England’s craggy coast or in the
towering redwoods of California. For others, it’s the high desert
of the Southwest or the shady
forests of the Deep South.
Regardless of the geography,
joy is tied to the land. In our
pages, you’ll find the best
places America has to offer.
My challenge to you
is simple:
Go. Find your joy.
