Our Jewish Community Center
You must have heard us howling
The following was adapted from Marci
Erlebacher’s remarks given at the JCC’s
Annual Meeting & Gala on June 4, 2017.
I have recently been reading a series of
books on wolves and I have to tell you that
I have become fascinated with a wolf’s
howl and why they howl. Wolves howl to
make their presence and territory known.
They are making the statement, “We are
here, this is our territory.”
For the past several weeks
when thinking of what to
say to you this afternoon, I
haven’t been able to get this
concept out of my head. And
then I realized that this is
exactly how I have felt this
past winter. I have wanted to
howl. Now some of you must
be thinking, “Where is she
going with this?” Why am I
attracted to wolves howling and what does
it have to do with the JCC?
I am going to assume that everyone
here knows about the JCC surviving three
threats last winter. Two were bomb threats
and one was a possible shooter threat.
Thankfully none of these came to fruition.
Many of you have heard me say that
living through a bomb threat wasn’t the
difficult part. When a threat happens, our
well-trained team goes on autopilot. We
were prepared. We followed our protocol.
Law enforcement really saw us through
these terrible events. With the assistance
of Dewitt Police, State Police, Onondaga
County Sheriffs and the FBI we were kept
safe. And I must give a special thank you
to the Federation’s community security
Marci Erlebacher
JCC Executive Director
liaison, Susan DeMari. Susan helps to
coordinate all of the players and is beyond
amazing at her job.
It is not the event itself but the
aftermath that can cripple you. Post
traumatic stress disorder was on our
doorstep. It has taken months to find
our “new normal.” And yes, I cannot
lie, part of finding wellness again had to
do with finding the perpetrator of these
events. Thus, we were able to
start breathing again. And
although we recently just
started to get the rhythm
of our breathing back, the
excellence of our programing
never wavered.
Yet we have been
wounded. We lost significant
business because of the bomb
threats. While many JCCs in
dense Jewish communities
did not experience a significant drop in
enrollment, we at the Sam Pomeranz
Jewish Community Center did. We have
lost tens of thousands of dollars in our
childcare programs, which are our bread
and butter. It may take a couple of years to
find our balance and bring our numbers
back up. Luckily, camp enrollment has
been strong. But I will not sugar coat this
experience. We are hurting. However,
thanks to the amazing support from the
Jewish Federation of Central New York,
we will be able to weather these difficult
times. They have been extremely sensitive
to our situation and thanks to the success
of the Federation campaign we are
receiving one of the largest allocations that
I can ever remember.
So what does this have to do with
wolves? A wolf that howls to say I am here
is exactly what I feel like doing right now.
Howl… we are here. We have survived.
This is who and what we are. We serve
our community proudly—do you hear
our howl? We care for our children and
are one of the safest childcare facilities in
Onondaga County. We care for our senior
citizens in body and mind. We offer a
home away from home for many. Is my
howling loud enough? We are a landlord
and a home for our Jewish community.
Perhaps we should all howl on that one.
There are many that understood
the significance of our survival in
this community and they have been
unbelievably supportive. Look around you,
look at this unparalleled attendance, and
look at our ad book—the most successful
one that we have ever produced. You must
have heard us howling.
Here is what I have learned this year.
Bomb threats will not stop us. They will
only make us howl louder and stronger.
I thank all of you who are here today
because you have joined us in this song,
in this howl. Please continue with your
support. More importantly, let us support
each other. Let us all support our Jewish
agencies and our congregations. Why is
it that on some level we only remember
to support our Jewish community when
a crisis happens or threatens us? Let us
support our temples and agencies with
loud and melodious howls that will tell one
and all, “We are here.”
Marci Erlebacher
Got your JCC membership card handy?
Providing a safe and welcoming environment
is a top priority of the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center. That’s why we’ve constructed
a new secured entrance inside our
main lobby (see photo at right) to add another
layer of security. Thus, JCC members will
soon need to use their membership card to
enter through this new entrance. This should
be fully in place by mid September. So JCC
members, get ready to use your membership
card for easy building access during regular
business hours. Don’t have a card yet? Stop by
the Fitness desk to get one at no cost. Visitors
will still be able to enter the building after signing
in at the front desk. For more information,
call the JCC at 315-445-2360.
Supporting Your Center
315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
The JCC of Syracuse is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your continued
financial contributions, gifts, grants and endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger community six days per week, year round.
Funds raised are critical to daily operations, special programming, future
development and improvements, and scholarships and financial aid.
End-of-year donation
Public support is imperative to the JCC of
Syracuse’s survival. The center depends on
these donations for a full 7% of its annual
budget. Information about making a taxdeductible,
end-of-year contribution will
be sent out in late fall.
Matching gifts
Many area companies have matching gift
programs, which encourage charitable
giving by their employees. Under these
programs, companies match gifts—often
dollar for dollar or even two dollars to
one—that individuals make to nonprofit,
tax-exempt organizations. Your gift to
the JCC may qualify. Please check with
your employer to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor
the memory of a loved one, the JCC
welcomes tax-deductible gifts to one of
our many endowment or special funds.
(See the tributes on page 33.) The JCC
will send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
community members who volunteer their
time and talents. Volunteers are invaluable
in bringing vital perspective, experience,
community and manpower to complement
those of our staff members.
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 25) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
For more information, contact
Erin Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
JCC throws biggest and most successful Annual Meeting & Gala
The most people in attendance. The most
donors. The most amount of money
raised. And the feeling you get following
a successful event… priceless. Those were
the takeaways from the Sam Pomeranz
Jewish Community Center’s 154th Annual
Meeting & Gala held on Sunday, June 4,
at Owera Vineyards in Cazenovia. Over
230 supporters came out to celebrate the
JCC of Syracuse and help honor its award
recipients for all that they’ve done for the
JCC and the community.
“The wonderful show of support that
our gala received this year was truly
phenomenal,” said JCC of Syracuse
Executive Director Marci Erlebacher.
“It was so touching to celebrate another
fantastic lineup of honorees and their
selfless accomplishments. After all that the
JCC has been through at the start of this
year, we are humbled by the outpouring of
generosity from our sponsors, donors and
guests for this year’s event.”
The Wladis Companies was recognized as this
year’s JCC gala naming sponsor. Accepting the
special recognition was Steve Wladis (center)
gala’s attendees upon accepting the JCC’s Kovod
Gadol Award.
This year’s
gala theme,
“Flavors of the
Mediterranean,”
was artfully
executed in the
Va’ad supervised
brunch catered
by the JCC’s Chef
Donna Carullo.
Following a brief
JCC board of
director’s business
meeting, it was
time to put the
spotlight on those
being recognized.
A total of six
awards were to be presented this year,
although five were ultimately handed
out. Robert and Diane Miron, long-time
supporters of both the JCC and the local
Jewish community, and one of this year’s
Hall of Fame Award recipients, were unable
to attend the gala because of Robert’s
recent illness. Fortunately, he’s doing well
now and making a good recovery. Stay
tuned for a future date to honor the Mirons
and present their award.
Before the awards were given, two
special JCC donors were acknowledged for
their particularly kind generosity recently.
The Wladis Companies, represented by
Steve Wladis, was recognized as this
year’s gala naming sponsor. The Wladis
Companies have been solid supporters of
the JCC’s Annual Meeting & Gala for many
years. Next, Joe and Lynne Romano were
presented with a special plaque recognizing
their significant JCC contribution, which
Kovod Award recipient Amy Sumida (center)
is flanked by JCC Executive Director Marci
Erlebacher and Board President Steven Sisskind.
“The Leslie” Award, which is named after Leslie London Neulander, was
presented to Todd Pinsky (pictured second from right) this year. Also pictured,
Executive Director Marci Erlebacher.
resulted in the renaming of the JCC’s
summer camp to the JCC Camp Joe and
Lynne Romano (see page 9). The Romanos,
of the longtime local business Romano
Motors, have been very generous with their
support for the JCC and throughout the
local community.
The first award given, the Kovod
Award, which signifies honor and
importance, was presented to Amy
Sumida. A JCC board member for the past
five years, Sumida has served on the gala
committee in 2012 and then as committee
co-chair from 2013–2016. She has also been
active in many local organizations such
as the Junior League of Syracuse, Meals
on Wheels and Person to Person Citizen
Advocacy. Sumida and her husband Aaron
reside in Jamesville with their children
Amanda, Andrea and AJ.
Next up was the Kovod Gadol Award
presented to Howard and Ellen Weinstein.
This is the JCC’s highest honor which in
Hebrew translates to great honor. The
Weinstein’s have been involved with the
JCC of Syracuse for nearly four decades.
Howard M. Weinstein, MD, was a JCC
board member in the late 1990s and
then rejoined the board in 2012 as a
vice president and executive committee
member. Ellen S. Weinstein, Esq., is a
former JCC of Syracuse board member.
Howard is a practicing physician at
Upstate University Hospital’s Community
Campus and also the hospital’s division
Another awesome summer camp season at the JCC
The JCC has once again wrapped up
another successful eight-week summer
day camp season. Hundreds of campers
ranging in age from infants to school-age
children to teens came out to the JCC’s
Camp Joe and Lynne Romano June 26 –
Aug. 18 for lots of summertime fun.
“Summer camp was a huge success
again this year,” said Mick Hagan, director
of children & teen services and camps.
“We had a great group of kids join us. The
enthusiasm and excitement each day was
awesome. Kudos to our camp counselors
for making everything run so smoothly
and creating some great times for our
campers.”
From arts and crafts, swimming and
sports to field trips and more, there was
more than enough fun and excitement to
go around for all JCC campers.
“Summer camp at the JCC is all
about the children,” said Hagan. “There’s
nothing else like it around here. We focus
on the kids to make each day a fun and
safe experience, and create wonderful
memories that will last a lifetime.”
JCC summer camp receives naming gift
The JCC of Syracuse recently received a
generous naming gift for its summer camp.
The significant donation from Joe and Lynne
Romano, founders of the Romano Auto
Group, has prompted the renaming of the
JCC’s summer camp to the JCC Camp Joe
and Lynne Romano. The new name was
announced at the JCC’s Annual Meeting &
Gala on June 4.
“We are incredibly appreciative of the
Romano’s very generous gift to benefit
our summer camp program,” said Marci
Erlebacher, JCC of Syracuse executive
director. “This naming is ushering in an
exciting new era for our summer camp and
will help extend the Romano’s legacy of
selfless support and generosity throughout
our community.”
The JCC’s Camp Joe and Lynne Romano
summer day camp serves hundreds of children
each year ages 6 weeks through tenth grade.
“We feel that it is necessary to support the
JCC to ensure the future of this community
center for our children, grandchildren and
generations to come,” said Lynne Romano.
Imagine what it was like flying a plane
before radar was in use. It was an amazing
feat when the plane arrived at its correct
destination. Today, many cannot imagine
traveling without Waze, Google Maps
or the good old GPS. For thousands of
years the Jews have utilized radar. This
radar does not need power to work nor
it cannot be affected by an EMP pulse. The
name of this radar has a very simple and
non scientific name: Shofar.
The shofar is more than a ram’s horn. It
is a beacon that emits its message to Jews
throughout the world. Rabbi Moshe Ben
Maimon (Rambam) described the shofar as
a type of alarm. The job of the shofar is to
awaken us to the reality of the dawn of a
new year.
Last year at this time, we made plans,
resolved to change bad habits, attempted
to better our relationships with others,
and tried to be kinder and more sensitive.
We may have succeeded or have failed
miserably.
Either way, the shofar is calling each and
everyone one of us. Regardless of our
previous year’s actions, there is always
room for improvement. The word shofar
means to sharpen. Our job for the new
year is to sharpen our action, clarify our
commitments and be the best person we
can possibly be.
Let us all make use of this spiritual radar,
it is calling to us. Let us all reach our
destination for the coming year; to be
written and sealed in the Books of Life,
health, peace and happiness for the year
The Hall of Fame Awards were
then presented to Linda Alexander and
posthumously to
Phil Holstein. This
award recognizes
and celebrates
individuals who
have dedicated
themselves to the
Syracuse Jewish
community and to
the advancement of
the JCC.
Linda Alexander
is president/CEO
of the Jewish
Federation of
Central New York and current and
founding executive director of the Jewish
Community Foundation of CNY. She
recently announced that she’ll be retiring
in the fall and moving out of the area
to be closer to family. Alexander is a
leadership pioneer for local women, having
served as president of Congregation Beth
Sholom-Chevra Shas and the Federation’s
chairwoman of its Annual Campaign. She
also received the Community Endowment
Excellence Award, given by United Jewish
Communities. Alexander has three
Coast.
Phil Holstein,
who passed away
last fall, was an
incredibly selfless
individual. A
former Jewish
Federation of
Central New York
board president,
he was a true
philanthropist,
community and
business leader,
and outdoorsman.
Holstein is
survived by his wife, Alyse, and children
Erin and Greg.
Holstein had the incredible gift of being
able to bring together diverse parts of the
community and approach sensitive issues
with kindness and fairness. “In addition
to caring about every aspect of the Jewish
Community, Phil cared about the whole
community,” said Alyse Holstein. He
was a compassionate peacemaker, always
wanting everyone to
be included and feel
engaged.”
Alex and
Charlotte “Chuckie”
Holstein had
a tremendous
influence on their
son, Phil. Both Alex
and Chuckie have
been a positive force
in Central New
York. They have
generously given
of their time and
talents for many years, for which they were
recognized by receiving the JCC’s Hall of
Fame Award in 2014.
“Phil had very strong Jewish roots
and just loved bringing people together,”
said Chuckie Holstein. “He was a very
honorable and ethical person. He had
tremendous integrity and was an extremely
positive person. He always looked on the
bright side and knew that there were two
sides to every story.”
This year’s Leslie Award, the second to
be given since being introduced last year,
was presented to attorney Todd J. Pinsky,
One of this year’s Hall of Fame Award honorees, Phil Holstein, was recognized
posthumously. Accepting the award on Phil’s behalf was his family. Pictured, starting
president and managing partner of the
law firm Pinsky & Skandalis, P.C., which
was founded by his grandfather, Norman
Pinsky, in 1935. “The Leslie” recognizes
outstanding commitment and service to
the JCC and to the local community—the
qualities which the award’s namesake,
Leslie London Neulander, personified
throughout her many selfless volunteer
pursuits.
Pinsky dedicates his time to several
local Jewish organizations which serve
children and seniors and help strengthen
our community’s strong culture and
traditions. He is a board member with the
Jewish Federation of CNY, where he is on
the community relations committee in
addition to serving as the security liaison
between the Federation and the JCC of
Syracuse. Pinsky is also on the boards of
Menorah Park, Syracuse Jewish Cemeteries
Association and Temple Concord. He and
his wife Sarah reside in Manlius with their
two young children, Charlotte and Nathan.
The JCC’s Annual Meeting & Gala is
the center’s largest and most important
annual fundraiser. Event proceeds, as in
years past, will provide significant funding
for scholarships to individuals in the JCC’s
early childhood, after school, summer
camp and senior programs.
HOW to REGISTER
Registration for the 2017-2018 school year
has been ongoing, and space is typically
very limited. Each new school year requires
registration. When a class is filled, based on
New York State licensing requirements, a
wait list is developed. Once the school year
begins, children are admitted from the wait
list on a space-available basis.
There is a $25 reservation fee to be placed
on one of our wait lists. This does not
guarantee placement in a classroom. We will
notify you if a placement becomes available,
and you will have 48 hours to accept the
placement.
Withdrawals, changes
Enrollment in ECDP is a commitment to
our 10-month school year which consists
of three sessions: September–November,
December–February and March–June. Any
program withdrawals or enrollment changes
must be made 30 days before the start of a
session.
For more information, and to schedule a
tour, please call us at 315-445-2040, ext. 123.
Infant Level
We offer the highest quality of care to our
youngest members in the Syracuse area. To
maintain a developmentally appropriate
environment for our infants, they are
separated into two age groups: Infant I
and Infant II. Infants who are 6 weeks to
12 months old at time of enrollment are
placed in the Infant I classroom. Infants
who are 12 months to 24 months at the
time of enrollment are placed in the
Infant II classroom.
The ECDP provides a responsive
environment that supports and encourages
exploration
through a variety
of classroom
routines and
experiences. Infant
caregivers focus
on daily routines
such as hellos and
goodbyes, diapering
and toileting,
feeding, dressing
and soothing to
sleep as part of
the curriculum.
These one-on-one
routines help to build
positive relationships
between infant and
caregiver, promoting
trust and allowing
infants to feel secure
in their environment.
Once infants have developed a
trusting relationship with their caregivers
they will start to gain new skills and
participate more actively in daily routines.
The teachers are then able to provide
intentional indoor and outdoor experiences
that allow children to learn while imitating
and pretending, connecting with music
and movement, exploring with sand and
water and creating with art.
Toddler Level
• Must be 18-months old by September 5, 2017
Toddler children are at an age when they
establish secure attachments with their
caregivers more quickly and are now eager
to experience their world. They react to
what they experience through their senses
and physical activity. ECDP teachers
provide intentional experiences for
toddlers through a variety of indoor and
outdoor experiences.
Learning materials that match the
children’s growing abilities and interests
are provided and the children start to
explore objects
and begin
to use them
purposefully.
While playing
with toys,
imitating and
pretending,
exploring sand
and water,
creating with
art and going
outdoors,
the toddlers
learn to
communicate
and socialize
with peers and
adults, to think
mathematically
and to discover
like scientists.
Toddlers start to enjoy special
programming outside of the classroom
setting, such as Toddler Tango and gym
class. Toddlers are placed into classrooms
according to their chronological age.
Children do not need to be toilet trained,
and when appropriate, toilet training will
be incorporated into one of the goals for
your child.
Three-Year Old Level
• Must be age 3 by December 1, 2017
With kindergarten just two years away,
this is an important time for every child
to learn that the world is bigger than
imagined. Children learn new skills
and concepts through our thematic,
hands-on approach to learning. Daily
activities are carefully planned to promote
children’s social, emotional and cognitive
development. Our teachers are trained to
recognize differences in rates
of development within this
age group, and individualize
instruction to meet every
child’s needs. Materials and
activities are appropriately
tailored in an effort to
challenge children’s abilities
while building their selfconfidence.
Throughout the year, children will
discover the wonder of the world they live
in. All of our three-year olds are actively
engaged in group discussions, long-term
studies, sensory play, cooking, process art
and more. Our three-year olds are reading
stories, singing songs and playing their way
through the day. We also tailor gym time
with our specialized gym instructor to
the needs of our three-year olds. We play
outside every day, weather permitting, on
our beautiful fenced-in playgrounds.
With all of these wonderful
activities happening in our three-year
old classrooms, the Early Childhood
Development Program provides a well
rounded and positive learning experience
for your child.
Pre-K Level
• Must be age 4 by December 1, 2017
Our oldest children explore the world
through our hands-on, developmentally
appropriate approach to learning. We
include both child initiated play and
teacher-directed academic experiences on
a daily basis. Planned lessons
and activities allow teachers
to informally and continually
assess each child in order
to effectively modify and
individualize instruction.
Academically, we focus
on exposing children to the
skills and concepts needed
to succeed in kindergarten.
This includes creative expression, math
and reading readiness, along with fine
and gross motor skill development to help
each child learn, grow and succeed. Each
classroom is also equipped with a SMART
board where the children are engaged in
daily interactive lessons which promote
creativity and critical thinking.
Children at the Pre-K level attend field
trips which coincide with what they are
learning. In the fall our classes will visit
the apple and pumpkin farms. Later in
the school year we’ll visit the MOST, F-M
Planetarium and Fayetteville Free Library.
Play pickleball at the JCC
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing
sports in America. What’s pickleball? It’s
a racquet sport that’s a combination of
tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s
suitable for all ages, all
fitness levels and all
skill levels. And, you
can now play pickleball
at the Sam Pomeranz
Jewish Community
Center in DeWitt.
The JCC’s
Neulander Family
Sports & Fitness Center
recently began offering
pickleball play on its
two outdoor tennis
courts. Pickleball court
times are Monday,
Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to
noon and Tuesday and Thursday from 5
p.m. to 9 p.m. The courts may be reserved
for one hour at a time any time of year
that the weather permits. Paddles and balls
are available to use free of charge on a
first come, first served basis. Pickleball is
free for JCC Fitness
members. The charge
for non-members is
$5 per person. Court
reservations are
suggested by calling
315-234-4522.
“We are excited
to offer Pickleball to
our members and the
community alike,”
said Patrick Scott,
JCC sports & fitness
director. “We were
able to re-stripe our
tennis courts for pickleball play while also
retaining the tennis court stripes so that
tennis can still be played. Pickleball is an
exciting, fast-paced game that’s a lot of fun
and great exercise, and it’s just starting to
become popular in this area.”
Pickleball was born more than 50 years
ago by some friends in Washington state
who didn’t have the right equipment to
play badminton. The game can be played
as singles or doubles on a court similar in
size to a badminton court with a slightly
modified tennis net. Besides the court, the
only other equipment required are paddles
similar to ping pong paddles and a ball
similar to a wiffleball. Pickleball is easy
to learn and has been called “addictive”
by those who regularly play. It’s a game of
finesse, precision and thinking, making it
a level playing field for all ages to compete
against each other.
