Maximum Yield's Industry News | January 2017

In this issue of Inews, we’re pleased to feature two companies taking advantage of an industry on the verge of major growth. One of our featured companies has been in business for 40 years while the other is a start-up looking to gain traction. 3SI Security built a name for itself protecting financial institutions from thieves intent on stealing their money. As it turns out, the company’s security expertise translates well to the cannabis industry. 3SI Security is a great example of adapting a product or service to a completely new industry. Conversely, CannaRelief is a start-up company looking to fill a much-needed niche in the cannabis industry. The company is the result of some very forward-thinking people who anticipated the need for their product and bravely moved forward with that idea. Their timing couldn’t have been better. Finally, Grow Green MI’s Anne Schultz arrived at the MJ Biz Conference and Expo in mid-November in Las Vegas armed with her reporter’s notebook, camera, and outgoing personality to provide us with some great photos and wrap-up of the expo. You can find her story and photos on page __. Speaking of expos, the team here at Maximum Yield is excited to announce the launch of GROWX, our newly branded series of trade shows set to get underway in 2017. Along with having a cannabis component, GROWX will feature education, business, and networking components developed to bring the industry together. GROWX will make its debut June 3-4, 2017, at San Jose’s McEnery Convention Center. A second show is scheduled to take place at Detroit’s Cobo Center from Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 2017. Hope to see you there! It is exciting times, to be sure, and we wish all of you a happy and prosperous new year. As always, thanks for reading Inews and if you have any questions feel free to contact us at editor@maximumyield.com.

Power Si
Power Si is the original patented form of
stabilized, bio-available silicic acid for crops.
It is a proprietary mix of micro-elements
supplemented with boric acid, phosphoric
acid, and potassium sulfate. It is pure,
highly concentrated, and produces fast,
visible effects. Power Si increases absorption
while reducing nutrient salt buildup and
moisture dehydration of crops. This product
is proven to build stronger cell walls and
stronger, thicker stems, which decreases a
plant’s susceptibility to various diseases. It
also increases a plant’s dry weight. Power
Si controls and reduces the space between
internodes that is caused by environmental
stress and nutrition imbalances. This product
is suitable for all cultivation systems and can
be used with any other product on the market.
After 10 years of almost no changes to HydroLogic’s
best-selling line of reverse osmosis filters, the venerable
O 2 Grow 2120-A Spider
The new 2120-A Spider from O 2 Grow delivers oxygen directly at the
root in every bucket. This unit was specifically designed for use in deep
water culture systems. Each emitter will supersaturate eight to 14 gallons
of water per bucket. The O 2 Grow line of products from the Oxygen
Research Group will raise oxygen saturation levels 50 per cent higher
than what air stones can achieve. The O 2 Grow emitter technology
works by electrically separating the water molecule into hydrogen and
oxygen. The pure oxygen nanobubble is re-absorbed back into the
water. Supplemental oxygen is important whether you are growing
hydroponically or in soil. Oxygen at the root helps prevent root disease,
enhances nutrient uptake, and increases flower and fruit yield. O 2 Grow
emitters come in a range of sizes able to oxygenate water reservoirs
from 10 gallons up to 250 gallons. Spider units are available with either
six or 12 emitters. Get out of the Stone Age with O 2 Grow.
independent industry experts, not only celebrated
success and rewarded change, but recognized
firms that pursue ideas, build partnerships,
develop good practice, and invest in people. The
VydroFarm, a fully integrated vertical growing
system for indoor hydroponics, was originally designed in response to a
future shift towards urban food production, the firm says. HydroGarden’s
aim was to promote sustainable food production irrespective of location
and climate, by giving commercial growers a viable hydroponic vertical
farming solution. With this win in the bag, HydroGarden will now go on to
represent the region in the National Awards later in January. To learn more,
Hydropods Announces Strategic Partnership
with CropBox
Hydropods has
formed a strategic
partnership with
CropBox to integrate
its cloud-based grow
controllers into their
shipping container agricultural
systems. “We’re proud of this partnership
with CropBox,” says Ted Tanner, CEO of Hydropods. “CropBox
is already in use by some major restaurants and retailers,
and we’re excited by their growth potential. We admire their
mission to bring local farming to more communities, providing
nutritious food grown in a sustainable environment.” CropBox’s
320-square-foot containers contain 2,800 planting spots
alongside all the necessary hydroponic grow components.
The Hydropods Grow Controllers have a variety of sensors
to monitor and control the environment and nutrient system,
which growers can access from their smartphones using the
CropBox App. CropBox uses 90 per cent less water than
conventional farms and greenhouse operations, 80 per cent
less fertilizer, no pesticides, and yields as much as a one-acre
field or a 2,200 square-foot hydroponic greenhouse.
PureAg Pest Control Acts Fast
PureAg Pest Control has proven to be
effective in eliminating aphids, blight,
botrytis, canker, downey and powdery
mildew, fusarsium, mites, pythium,
rhizoctonia, rust, and thrips. PureAg
immediately impacts the exoskeleton
of the pest upon contact by
disrupting the molecular structure
of chitin and other protein
substances that protect the
insect. This triggers rapid and
irreversible deterioration of the
insect’s spiracles and tracheal
system resulting in suffocation.
No resistance can be developed
by the targeted insects because
PureAg Pest control does not act
on the nervous system, but rather
on the respiratory apparatus. Product
is also a FIFRA 25b minimum risk pesticide. For
states Christian Long, Current Culture H 2O’s vice-president of design.
Welsey Eaton, retail division sales manager for Hanna Instruments, adds
“The conversations we had with the customers were very valuable.” Grow
Green continues to make strides as it pushes forward and continues to
add customized services, support, and events from its Master Grower
monthly mixers to trimmer workshops. The company is working on
hosting more interactive workshops and discussions about a certification
program are taking place. “It’s about bringing what people want to know
and learn more about and what value can we provide to our growers
that will help them be successful. By having everyone come together
The Greenhouse and
Hoophouse Grower’s
Handbook Available
March 1
There are many benefits of
using protected culture,
including resource efficiency,
predictability, higher yields,
pest and disease control, and
improved flavor. As weather
patterns continue to
change, sharing the
best indoor growing
practices with
growers to help
them control their own
protected climate is vital. That’s why Andrew Mefferd, who
spent seven years in the research department at Johnny’s
Selected Seeds and consulted with researchers and farmers
around the world on greenhouse growing, wrote The
Greenhouse and Hoophouse Grower’s Handbook. This guide,
which hits shelves March 1, is set to become an indispensable
resource for protected growing. The first part of the book
includes sections on protected culture structures and
their features, the economics and efficiencies of protected
growing, and protected culture plant basics. Part two looks
in-depth at the eight most profitable crops: tomatoes,
eggplant, cucumbers, peppers, leafy greens, lettuce,
herbs, and microgreens. This book is full of techniques and
strategies that can help growers optimize plant growth, satisfy
customers, and relocalize the food system.
Governor of West Flanders Visits Urban Crops
The governor of West Flanders, Carl Decaluwé, visited
the headquarters of the ag tech company Urban Crops in
of the company’s
different
technologies
and techniques,
several of which
have international
patent
eight new units by summer 2017.
“Our province has a history of many international companies
active in the agriculture, machine building, and food industry,
and of which the knowledge center has been situated in our
province for years,” says governor Decaluwé. “It gives me
great pleasure to see that Urban Crops uses all these local
solution provider in their fast-emerging international market
of the closed environment indoor farming.”
Minister Engages Youth
in Canadian Agriculture
with Social Media
Canada’s minister of agriculture,
Lawrence MacAulay, hosted a
Facebook Live session from the
Ruminant Animal Centre at
Dalhousie University in Halifax,
Canada, late last year. The
goal: to engage young
farmers and youth in
agriculture. “Our
government is
committed to
listening to the issues
that matter most to young
Canadians,” says MacAulay. “The agriculture
sector needs to attract young entrepreneurs from diverse areas
of expertise to ensure a sustainable and competitive industry
for the future. The Facebook Live session was a great chance
to hear in-person and online the views of students and youth
engaged in the agriculture sector. The input we received will
help develop the policies and programs to make sure not just
that the sector succeeds, but that youth can contribute to that
success.” Alumnus and Cultiv8 Sandbox coordinator Jolene
MacEachern, who was at the event, says, “We have so much
work still to do in the school classroom. Young people don’t
understand what modern agriculture is.”
Years in Business
Two
When it comes to cannabis,
there can be too much of a good
thing. That’s why CannaSafety
has developed a fast-acting,
patent-pending antidote for the
nausea, anxiety, and paranoia
that can come with consuming
too much marijuana.
CannaRelief, CannaSafety’s flagship
product, started as a personal project.
The company’s founder, a former Microsoft
employee who uses medicinal marijuana
to treat fibromyalgia, needed something to
combat what he calls “the red zone”: the nauseating,
anxiety-ridden state that stems from
the accidental overconsumption of THC.
“You don’t have to suffer, call 911, and go
to the emergency room, where they can
do nothing except give you a bed to ride
it out in and hand you a $3,000 bill,” says
CEO William Brouillet, who helped start
CannaSafety after trying CannaRelief.
“I tried it and wow,” Brouillet says.
“I said, ‘This is a great product; there is a
great business here’.”
Each bottle of CannaRelief contains 20
milligrams of CO 2-extracted cannabidiol
(CBD), which has been found to counteract
the negative effects of THC. It also
contains a semi-secret blend of vitamins,
herbs, and additional anti-anxiety ingredients
like citicoline and alpha-pinene. Most
consumers keep CannaRelief on hand in
case they accidently consume too much
cannabis. It can also be given to pets
and children who confuse THC-infused
edibles with a regular treat. Brouillet
says the all-natural concoction reduces
THC-induced nausea, anxiety, and paranoia
in as little as five to 15 minutes, even
if someone is “vomiting sick”. It also has
no known side effects.
“People can now
place aside their
worries about
using cannabis.”
“People get excited when they try it;
they can’t believe how well it works,” he
says. “People can now place aside their
worries about using cannabis.”
Some clients also use CannaRelief to
manage the effects of medicinal marijuana
by ingesting it before they use cannabis.
Brouillet distinctly recalls receiving
a phone call from a woman who bought
the product for her bed-ridden husband
to use along with Rick Simpson Oil. She
had ordered it online as a last resort when
he wanted to stop taking the oil, which he
uses as cancer treatment, because of the
major negative side effects. Three days
after trying CannaRelief, he was out of
bed and feeling like his old self.
“They were even going to go away for
the weekend; she thanked me for giving
her their lives back,” says Brouillet, who
remembers that call as his best day on
the job. “She was so happy; she called
me an angel.”
It’s customer testimonials like this that
keep the CannaSafety team going. “I
can’t explain the feeling; you get to be
responsible for changing a person’s life
for the better,” says Brouillet. “Money
is not the driving force; sure, we make
money, but we care.”
“We work with people to make sure
they can get our products, whether they
can afford it or not,” he adds. “CannaSafety
products are affordable to most,
but that word is ambiguous if you have
nothing. We are a company dedicated to
helping people and will let our actions in
the industry speak for themselves.”
Ironically, though, the main struggle
CannaSafety still faces is public
education and making people aware
that there is a product that allows for
the safe consumption of cannabis. The
issue is slowly improving as more states
pass pro-marijuana laws, more people
become curious about cannabis, and
the media catches wind of CannaRelief;
however, the company still mostly relies
on the overwhelmingly positive word-ofmouth
recommendations from its clients
and supportive members of the cannabis
industry. “Word of mouth in the industry
is key … People try it, talk about it, and
our phone rings,” Brouillet says. “Like
I said, when you have a product that
works, it sells itself.”
CannaSafety is also trying to bring
CannaRelief onto the shelves of major
retailers. According to the company’s
website, CannaRelief can be sold
anywhere—not just dispensaries and
recreational marijuana stores—because
its CBD oil is derived from imported
hemp and, therefore, legal. Until negotiations
are complete, however, it will
continue to sell via Amazon and major
distributors in Europe, Canada, and the
Building and maintaining a strong
success. CannaSafety now
employs seven people, all of whom truly
believe in the company’s product and its
effect on clients’ lives. “All companies
say such things as standard operating
statement, but I tell you, it’s true; they
care,” says Brouillet. “When we talk and
have our company meetings to discuss
products sales and marketing, it is always
about how well the product is working
for people, how can we get the word out
faster … customer stories on how much
they bring every day is over the top.”
Recently, the team focused its energy
on expanding CannaSafety’s line.
First, CannaRelief AM, which is
designed to quickly remove the foggy,
my-head-is-in-the-clouds feeling some
people have the morning after cannabis
AN INDUSTRY
ON A ROLL
44 January 2017 // Maximum Yield's Industry News

BY ANNE SCHULTZ
If the annual MJ Biz Conference
is any indication, and it is, the
cannabis industry is on an
unstoppable roll. More than 10,000
people and 323 exhibitors attended
the expo in November in Las Vegas,
up significantly from the inaugural
conference. Grow Green MI’s
Anne Schultz took her camera and
reporter’s notebook to the show for
Inews and had a chance to talk to
some of the industry’s key players.
For those waiting for the recreational
cannabis market to plateau, keep
waiting; the industry is getting stronger
and gaining more momentum each day.
This was evident as 323 exhibitors and
10,000-plus people attended the fifth
annual Marijuana Business Conference
and Expo hosted by the Marijuana
Business Daily in Las Vegas at the Rio
Casino and Hotel in November 2016.
The event has come a long way since its
debut in 2011 when it was held in a historic
Masonic lodge building in downtown
Denver with only 402 attendees.
While Marijuana Business Daily was
founded on providing high-quality howto
content, it has evolved quickly and
proven to be an invaluable business resource
for those involved in the industry.
The editorial team for the publication
also organizes the conference.
The event successfully delivered
top-notch, exclusive industry analysis
and forecasts, patient and consumer
insights, and networking opportunities.
Cassandra Farrington, CEO and
co-founder of the publication, says it
is MJ Biz’s goal to make sure they are
communicating the same level of quality
content in the conference program that
they produce in the publication. “There’s
no question that as an entrepreneur
in the cannabis/marijuana space, the
No. 1 best investment you can make in
making sure your business is successful
is fighting for legalization. The reason
why legalization is important is
because it legitimizes every single one
of these exhibitors and every attendee
here… that’s what’s going to make the
difference at the end of the day for the
people in this room,” says Farrington.
Chris Walsh, editorial director and founding
editor, expressed high hopes for the industry
and recapped the progress of legalization
and economic impact it will have
for the states that are recreationally and
medically legal. “The recreational market
is still growing and we are seeing an
increase in seven-figure investment deals,
more interest in cannabis-touching firms,
and mainstream interest from companies
like Scott’s Miracle Grow and other noted
venture capitalists,” says Walsh. Economic
impact projections, he says, are projected
to be between $24 and $44 billion.
There’s no question that
as an entrepreneur in
the cannabis/marijuana
space, the No. 1 best
investment you can make
in making sure your
business is successful is
fighting for legalization.”
TRENDS & Technologies
In the beginning, it
was more about
educating the public,
whereas now, they’ve
done their research and
are more informed and
we are having more
B2B conversations.”
When asked what the main changes
were from previous shows to now, Tim
Shaw, COO of MariMed Advisors, a
presenter and three-year conference
attendee, responded, “In the beginning,
it was more about educating the
public, whereas now, they’ve done their
research and are more informed and
we are having more B2B conversations.
The market is more mature and there
are more people who are here already
in the industry than not.”
Smart Pots’ Charles Jackson added, “It
has been nothing but first-class treatment
for everyone here.” Mills Nutrients’
Ben Bott notes the conference provides
a forum for the best information to be
shared. “We’re all growers,” he says.
“We are industry leaders when it comes
to high-quality cannabis and that’s why
people come to this expo—to get real
advice from people who have been in the
business and are genuinely here to help.”
Close to 90 presenters participated in
roundtable discussions and workshops
during the conference. Even with the
growth different industry segments
have made in the past year, challenges
remain when it comes to growth and
scalability, taxation, compliance,
federal law and intervention, and
banking. In March 2016, there were
301 cannabis companies that secured
banking, leaving 70 per cent of planttouching
and 50 per cent for ancillary
businesses with no banking, according
to Marijuana Business Daily.
Long-term, experts say growth will vary
based on program expansions, change
in investment climate, regulatory fluctuations,
and presidential approach.
Short-term, some of the predictions
Walsh noted were based on consolidation
between industry leading companies,
federal changes on hemp laws, and
investments with bigger price tags.
“The best part of working
at 3SI is receiving our
Robbery Report emails,” says Lisa
Moughan, 3SI’s global marketing communication
manager. “What that means is that
every time a 3SI tracking device is deployed by one of
our customers in a robbery, we receive an email update telling
us about the crime, the pursuit, the capture, and the recovery.
It is so rewarding coming to work every day knowing that we are
helping to make the world a safer place by catching criminals.”
While the model for a lot of retailers
is to use less cash and more card
transactions, the CANNABIS INDUSTRY
is still limited in those capabilities, so
they still use a lot of cash.”
3SI, founded 45 years ago in Pennsylvania, started out by
supplying its trademarked SecurityPac dye pack products to
financial institutions. From there, the company expanded to
include GPS tracking and now serves retail markets and law
enforcement agencies in addition to banks and credit unions.
With the rise of legal cannabis-based businesses in the US
and around the world, especially for retailers and commercial
growers, 3SI’s products are the perfect fit to help protect what is
still a largely cash-based industry.
“We are spending a lot of time talking to people in the industry
to better understand their security challenges and to understand
the business processes they follow,” says Moughan. “It has been
interesting to learn that they have many of the same concerns that
our other retail customers have. One differentiator, though, is that
this is a cash-based business. While the model for a lot of retailers
is to use less cash and more card transactions, the cannabis
industry is still limited in those capabilities, so they still use a lot
of cash. Storing and moving large amounts of cash makes them an
attractive target for criminals.”
Moughan adds that 3SI continues to keep a dialogue open with
retailers and growers to learn how to best prevent robberies.
“We’ve learned that there are a lot of times when the product is
vulnerable to robbery and we’ve been excited to learn that we
have existing products that are perfect to protect product in these
circumstances,” she says.
With direct distribution throughout North America and Europe,
and indirectly in 40 other countries, 3SI is considered the
global leader in providing innovative solutions, professional
service, and customer satisfaction. With a long list of employees
who have chosen to stay for 20-plus years, the company
has an internal saying of ‘3SI – ONE team,’ one that Moughan
says the team takes to heart.
“We take pride in knowing that our devices helped capture a
criminal, especially ones that have been implicated in numerous
other crimes,” says Moughan. “Taking serial and sometimes violent
offenders off the street makes all of the hard work very worthwhile
and we are looking forward to partnering with cannabis
customers to find solutions to help them with security concerns.”
GREEN FEAT //
ECO-MINDED INNOVATORS
SHOW US THEIR GREEN FEAT
Hot on the heels
of their fall 2016
Kickstarter campaign,
Green Thumb Technology,
based in Squamish, British
Columbia, is now taking
pre-orders for its innovative
household hydroponic system,
the VeggieWall. The system’s
unique, intuitive design is the
result of 3.5 years of research and
development. Cofounder and CEO
Jen McGuinness talks about what the
experience has been like so far.
INNOVATING THE
WAY WE GROW FOOD
HOW DID YOUR BUSINESS
GET ITS START?
In July 2013, when I was researching
how to make my patio garden vertical,
I came across living walls. Inspired by
these artistic, non-edible gardens, I set
out to create an edible version. I called
my friend of 20 years, Matthew, and we
set out to develop the VeggieWall.
HOW HAS IT EVOLVED
OVER THE YEARS?
We started with prototypes in our backyards.
We consulted several designers
and electrical engineers. Some courageous
friends and family tested our
prototypes and gave us feedback. In the
fall of 2015, we had finally nailed the
design and received funding from the
National Research Council of Canada,
and with a partnership with Emily Carr
University’s industrial design department,
we finalized our mold for manufacturing.
Myself and Matt have done
everything out of our own pockets while
working our current professions to
launch Green Thumb. We ran a test run
with our manufacturers in Langley and
sourced and tested all the electronics.
We are now taking pre-orders on our
website, with the first VeggieWalls
being delivered in April 2017.
WHAT IS YOUR
COMPANY’S PHILOSOPHY?
Empowering people to grow food and
live healthy, fulfilling lives! Plants lose
their nutrients once picked. The most
nutrient-rich food you can eat is food that
your grow yourself and harvest as you
need it. It is so convenient when your
wall is bursting with veggies and greens
in the comfort of your home. It is easy
to pick some fresh food to add to your
dishes. Foodies can ascribe to how much
better the taste of fresh food is. Not only
is growing our own food better for our
health, it reduces the impact on the planet.
Growing our own food, even a small
amount, helps take the burden off the
Earth. With urban densification, we need
to seek alternative ways to grow food.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR
FLAGSHIP PRODUCT,
THE VEGGIEWALL.
The VeggieWall is an indoor vertical
vegetable garden that is affordable,
easy to use, and looks great on your
wall. Unlike other units that take up
counter space or floor space, we have
developed a garden that fits seamlessly
into your living space. It can be mounted
to your wall, hung from the
ceiling, or placed on a vertical
stand. The VeggieWall
grows more food in the
smallest square footage
of any garden, and is
modular—users can grow
a few plants, or hundreds.
With the VeggieWall, people
can grow veggies indoors yearround.
The systems are affordable
to buy and affordable to
run with their energy-efficient
LED grow lights. No expensive
seed cartridges are required.
We wanted to empower people
to grow food, so we didn’t want
to limit how they could use their
systems. We do sell organic
and heirloom seeds that we
have found to work well in the
VeggieWall, but people are free to
use their own too.
OUR TECHNOLOGY IS
YOUR GREEN THUMB!
WE HAVE CUSTOMERS
WHO HAVE NEVER
GROWN PLANTS
WHAT ELSE MAKES IT UNIQUE?
The VeggieWall is the world’s first high water flow vertical
hydroponic system, and it is modular. We have patents
pending in the US and Canada for our Nutrient Cascade
Technology. We found that current hydroponic watering
systems were not adequate for what we wanted to do, so we
invented our own!
WHAT SHOULD THE NOVICE HOME
GARDENER KNOW ABOUT YOUR
PRODUCTS?
Our technology is your green thumb! We have customers who
have never grown plants before and they find it easy. The
VeggieWall is perfect for urban dwellers who don’t have the
time, space, or know-how to grow food. We also have customers
that are renovating their kitchen and incorporating the
VeggieWall into it.
WHERE DO YOU SEE THE COMPANY
IN 10 YEARS?
Currently we can ship anywhere in North America and are
hoping to expand to Europe, Asia, and Australia. We hope to
use some of our profits to provide VeggieWalls to families and
communities that cannot afford fresh, organic food. I grew
up in a home with a single mom and brother and know the
pains of putting healthy food on the table. Matt and I hope
products like ours will lessen the burden on the Earth to feed
our increasing population, put food back in the hands of the
people, reduce pesticides, water shortages, and greenhouse
gas emissions associated with traditional agriculture. In short,
we hope to change the world!
BUSINESS ADVICE FOR AN
EVOLVING INDUSTRY
The
to Starting a Successful
Commercial Cannabis Enterprise
brought to you by
Since 2013, the legal marijuana industry
has grown by an extraordinary $5.2
billion. And as both medical and adult
recreational usage clear hurdles with
voters, increasing competition for a
stake in tomorrow’s billions will require
cannabis entrepreneurs to optimize every
facet of their business from day one. Are
you ready to take the next step?
The legal marijuana industry has
come a long way in a very short
time. And savvy entrepreneurs,
even venture capital companies, see
this emerging market as their next
big money maker. Why? In a report
published by ArcView Market Research,
the industry is projected to generate a
massive $21.8 billion in total annual
sales by 2020.
THE CURRENT STATE
OF THE INDUSTRY
According to Gallup polls, backing
for full legalization has climbed from
12 per cent in 1969 to 25 per cent in
1995. It’s now at 60 per cent, firmly
crossing into the majority. As for sales,
ArcView reported an increase of 17
per cent to $5.4 billion in 2015 over
2014. And by the end of 2016, sales
will likely grow another 25 per cent to
$6.7 billion. Calling it a “green rush”
is an understatement, and there’s a
lot of money to be made if a company
can navigate an industry fraught with
regulations and pitfalls. So, how do you
capitalize on this unprecedented market
opportunity? Many find that partnering
with a cannabis consultant is the surefire
way to succeed.
HOW IMPORTANT IS A
CANNABIS CONSULTANT?
Many entrepreneurs have gotten their
commercial cannabis enterprise off the
ground on their own. If you were to decide
to go this route, you’ll face licensing
and legal hurdles, ongoing scrutiny by
state regulators and the IRS, and delays
caused by a trial-and-error method of
setting up operations.
To streamline the start-up process,
another option is to partner with a
cannabis consultant. Their experience
can help you plan, launch, and operate
a highly successful medical or adult-use
cultivation, processing, or dispensary
operation—all without the headaches.
While raising enough capital and securing
licenses are well-known obstacles,
that’s just the start. Here are just a few
other issues that commercial cannabis
enterprises face today:
• The industry is highly regulated
by local laws and all aspects of the
business are scrutinized.
• Because it’s illegal at the federal
level, dispensaries are cash-only,
requiring security logistics.
• Due diligence is required when
cultivating cannabis, hiring
employees, and bringing on investors.
THE ROLE OF A
CANNABIS CONSULTANT
An experienced and knowledgeable
cannabis consultant will be able to
help you at every step, from planning
and licensing to hiring and training
the right staff, ensuring consistent
cultivation, and complying with state
rules and regulations.
The right cannabis consultant will
bring a proven, turn-key business
model to the table, enabling you to
produce a quality product via costefficient
production methods. The
model should be risk-averse and reduce
your overall exposure. It should also
allow you to recoup your investment
while continuing to be competitive in a
quickly evolving marketplace.
For current owners of a commercial
cannabis enterprise, a consultant can
play a key role in improving overall
profitability. They should be able to
customize a plan that aligns with
your goals and meets your unique
needs, helping you improve yields,
consistency, quality, and efficiency.
Below is a quick checklist of what
it takes to open a fully compliant,
medical and recreational cultivation
and dispensary operation.
Planning Your Operations
• Business plan and financial guidance
• State application support
• Facility layout and design
• Cannabis cultivation information
• Operations planning
• Hands-on cultivation training
• Standard operating procedures
Launching Your Business
• Facility design and build-out
• Guidance in hiring
• Hands-on staff training
• Employee documentation
and handbooks
• Inventory control
• Daily operations best practices
• Tips for managing a
cash-only business
• Security logistics
• Daily procedures from open to close
Ensuring Your Success
• Hands-on staff training
• Patient and customer record-keeping
• Ongoing guidance and support
CHOOSING THE RIGHT
MARIJUANA CONSULTANT
Let’s recap. You’re looking to grab your
share of a lucrative emerging market.
You now understand the need for a
cannabis consultant, as well as what
role you can expect them to play in your
business. Now, here’s the most important
part: finding a consultant you can trust.
A consultant you can trust will help
you make decisions that could have
a dramatic effect on your business.
Your first rule of thumb is to be wary of
anyone that promises you the sun, moon,
and stars. Just like any other business,
a commercial cannabis enterprise takes
work and focus. If their claims of easy
money sound too good to be true, they
probably are. Don’t fall for it. Along with
being able to provide a solid plan and
guidance through all the areas listed
above, your cannabis consultant should
possess the following:
• A deep understanding of this
emerging industry, including statespecific
laws and regulations.
• A proven track record and
positive reputation, both in and
outside of the industry.
• The ability to deliver quantifiable
results that meet or exceed
original expectations.
• A belief in open communication
and a hands-on approach to
partnering with you.
Be sure to do your research, check
references, and have a conversation
with prospective consultants. Because
you’re going to be working closely
with them on a long-term basis, even
personality and rapport should be
factors in your decision.
This is where Medicine Man
Technologies, a full-service cannabis
publicly traded cannabis company,
Calling it a
“green rush” is an
understatement,
and there’s a lot
of money to be
made if a company
can navigate an
industry fraught
with regulations
and pitfalls.”
we work with groups who have the
resources, connections, and desires to
PROTECTING YOUR
Growing Business
by Chelsea Fox | You have a great product and scouted out
the perfect storefront location, but before you finally open
the door to your new cannabis business, you need to take
one last important thing into consideration: insurance.
“
Whether they are a grower,
dispensary owner, supplier,
or processor, marijuana
entities looking to sell to the
public are now businesses
that need insurance.”
Congratulations! You’ve made the
jump to becoming a business
owner. To get here, you probably spent
endless hours researching everything
you needed to get your operation up
and running. You looked at parking,
a noticeable location with ease of
access, and so much more. Now,
there’s one last thing: insurance.
In the states that have legalized
marijuana, insurance coverage is
one of many regulations business
owners encounter. As Ed Kuhn,
president of Creative Edge Nutrition
and Wellness Medical Protection
Group/Liability Insurance Solutions,
stated in the September 2014 issue of
Insurance Journal, “Whether they are
a grower, dispensary owner, supplier,
or processor, marijuana entities
looking to sell to the public are now
businesses that need insurance.”
There are few select companies who
have stepped up to the plate to insure
this new market in line with their
state laws. However, most insurance
carriers are choosing to watch
from the sidelines due to the everchanging
risks and hurdles presented
in the process of legalizing marijuana
for medical and/or recreational use.
Still, they are also assessing data
collected from those who are insuring
cannabis businesses, and it is safe
to say that as knowledge of how the
industry works increases, so will the
limits of coverage.
Kuhn’s agency is one that evaluated
the risks and started helping business
owners in Colorado navigate their
new ventures. Select insurance
companies in Michigan, where I work,
have also assessed the risks and
developed eligibility requirements
correlating with Michigan state laws.
Marijuana businesses must meet
those requirements in order to qualify
for coverage. The number one of
these is that businesses must be housed
in a commercially zoned building.
Residential properties, such as homes,
vacant lots with a pole barn on the
outskirts of town, or a garage, will not
qualify for insurance.
Those of you who already bought a
residential lot for your business, don’t
panic. While it’s a bit of a process, you
may consider applying to rezone your
lot from residential to commercial.
Before you do, however, learn about your
community and find out if they will be
accepting of your business venture. Also,
attend zoning meetings before you file
the application to rezone your property
for commercial use.
Although procedures vary from municipality
to municipality, the rezoning
process then typically involves public
notice, meetings with planning commission
officers, and neighborhood meetings.
As you might imagine, this process
could take several months.
With so many investment dollars
going into your grand opening, don’t
chance anything. Find an insurance
carrier willing to insure the cannabis
market in your state; not only is it
more convenient than working with
an out-of-state carrier, but an in-state
company can better help you meet the
proper zoning requirements for your
county or city. Also, be sure to work with
a qualified representative who knows
the limits of coverage and how to
properly use them so you can grow your
business in the right direction.
Philanthropy
MATTERS
Whether you’re a hydro shop owner, a
distributor, or a manufacturer, business
philanthropy is a competitive advantage
that companies big and small should be
promoting to drive sales—in the New Year
and anytime after.
Philanthropy Matters
“
Millennials are pushing
every type of organization
and business to make
a social impact and be
socially responsible.”
Corporate giving is big philanthropic
business. Last year more than $18.4
billion was given to the non-profit and
philanthropic sectors. Do you want to
know one of the things I love most about
what’s happening in the world of doing
good? I like the fact that the old ways of
doing things are going out the window.
I like the fact that non-profits are not the
only ones in the social good game. I like
the fact that donors and Millennials are
pushing every type of organization and
business to make a social impact and be
socially responsible.
That’s good for the world, and humanity
can use a lot of positive energy right
now. It doesn’t matter if your business is
a local pizza shop or you’re the CEO of a
multi-national company worth billions
of dollars. There are good reasons your
company should align social good with
your business strategy.
Giving Back Improves Your
Business’s Reputation
Reputation is everything. It takes years
to build and seconds to destroy in this
transparent world. A day goes by in what
seems like seconds and we’re living at
warp speed. Technology has allowed for
vast amounts of information to go around
the world in moments.
People know the good companies and the
bad companies that don’t do anything for
anyone else but their own pocket.
Something that happens in one country
is known in moments on the other
side of the planet through social media
platforms. What does that mean for your
business? When a business does good,
people know it. The community and
customers are much more inclined to
do business with a socially responsible
company rather than one that is in it for
profit only. Corporate philanthropy helps
you raise your brand’s reputation.
Philanthropy Matters
Transparency and Honesty
Are Key Drivers
Many people thought the Mad Men
series was great. But, friend, those days
are over. The days where executives
are sipping drinks in their offices and
chasing their secretary are rightfully
gone. That era was all about ad executives
sitting around and figuring out how
they were going to make you buy their
product. That still happens today, but
smart businesses know they have a high
bar around transparency and honesty.
Social media and new media have
brought a lot of accountability to the
business world. Corporate social
responsibility helps drive home the
point that you care about society as a
whole. You respect the world you live
in. You see your business as a contributing
member of a whole network and
global community. And, you believe
in operating transparently and with
honesty. You’re not cooking something
up in the back room like in the old
Mad Men days.
“
You believe in operating
transparently and with
honesty. You’re not
cooking something up in
the back room like in the
old Mad Men days.”
Corporate Social Responsibility
Helps the Bottom Line
Want to know the best way to increase
sales? Show you care. Period. The
world is dealing with a lot. There’s a
lot of bad stuff happening in the world,
but people are thirsting for leadership
around positive things that help others
and our planet.
Everybody can do their part in helping
their local community and the planet be
a better place. Leading companies have
taken a very active corporate social
responsibility (CSR) stance: Nike, Virgin,
FedEx, etc. There’s a simple reason
for that. Their leadership around good
CSR practices is good for the world.
64 January 2017 // Maximum Yield's Industry News

And, if it’s good for the world, it helps
them increase their brand’s reputation
as a socially responsible company. If
they can communicate that they care
about the world and communities
where they operate, more people will
want to do business with them rather
than their competitors.
Business Philanthropy Helps
Attract Talent
People want to work for companies that
deliver a good atmosphere for work. But,
when they speak to their family and
friends, they want to be proud of where
they work. A business that invests time,
talent, and treasure in its community allows
these employees (who, by the way,
are great brand ambassadors) to talk
positively about the business.
On your social media feeds, I’m sure
you’ll see some of your family members,
friends, or social media friends
talk about and promote their company.
They’re not doing that because anyone
is paying them to do it. They’re
posting and tweeting on their personal
accounts because they genuinely
want to share with others a good
part of their lives—their work lives.
They are talking about your brand,
and this helps attract talent. When
people see employees who are happy
to work at your business because you
demonstrate you care, it helps attract
other talent.
helps attract other talent.”
ARE YOU 2017
by John Stanley
READY?
Retail Guru John Stanley predicts big changes are coming
to the retail space as Millennial consumers are wanting a
more immersive shopping experience.
Several surprises occurred in 2016,
especially in the global political
arena. What will 2017 present
and are you ready to grasp the
opportunities? In 2017, Millennials,
those individuals born between 1977
and 1992, will become the biggest
spenders in the economy and this
will result in a shift in retailing to
address their needs and wants.
When it comes to the retail world, the
emphasis used to be on products and
making enough space for products on
the shelf. Moving forward, I believe we
will see an emphasis shift and retailers
will be more focused on “engagement”
space and how they can maximize the
length of time shoppers spend lingering
in their store. Nowadays, nearly all
consumers can buy online, and many
do, but in 2017, more people will want to
visit a retail space that engages them.
66 January 2017 // Maximum Yield's Industry News

We have already started to see this
development over the last 12 months.
Retail space will be used for several
different types of customer engagement.
Research carried out by Bridget Behe
and Carol Millar in 2016 in the US and
Canada asked Millennials what and
how they thought before and after
they went shopping. The research was
focused on florists, but the findings could
apply to any retailer. There were four key
findings that relate to all retailers:
1) Millennials do not like to feel
ignorant when they go shopping.
2) Millennials research online and
consult trusted experts before
they talk to the retailer.
3) Adults want experiences with their
children when they go shopping.
4) Millennials are looking for
engaging experiences.
“I BELIEVE WE WILL SEE AN EMPHASIS SHIFT AND
RETAILERS WILL BE MORE FOCUSED ON 'ENGAGEMENT'
SPACE AND HOW THEY CAN MAXIMIZE THE LENGTH OF
TIME SHOPPERS SPEND LINGERING IN THEIR STORE.”
Walking the Shopping
Aisles is Not the Future
The majority of Millennial consumers
are looking for engaging space, not
more product. Here are some examples
of what engaging space looks
like in the retail world:
• In 2016, Waitrose supermarkets in
the UK set up in-store “grazing”
areas. These spaces have benches
and tables located next to the
bakery and deli where customers
can stop and “graze”.
• Waitrose, like Tesco and many
other retailers, has introduced
restaurants and coffee shops into
the supermarket mix.
• More and more stores are getting
parents to linger longer by allocating
more space to children. A
company called Instore Kids Corner,
based in the Netherlands, has set
up a highly successful business
designing and installing indoor
playgrounds in retail stores around
the world.
• Beauty stations in shopping centers,
where the tips and ideas are just as
important as the products, are becoming
common pop-ups. For example,
in the UK, The Mall in Camberley set
up Our Beauty Day, which included a
cover beauty shot for consumers.
• Make & Take workshops are a highly
successful retail model, think Home
Depot and Michael’s craft store, both
of which host educational workshops.
The key to success is the customer
can make and take whatever
they save created.
• Intergenerational workshops, where
parents can attend the same workshop
as their children, are another
huge success. For example, I recently
attended a pumpkin painting workshop
where adults and children each
painted their own pumpkin before
taking them home.
Allocating a place in your store that can
quickly be converted to a space for activity
is becoming more important in retailing. I
predict that 2017 will be a period where the
fun element of retailing is enhanced.
line and expand their market base. John’s expertise ranges from conference
speaking to hands-on management consulting.
6 STEPS
Dream
to Get Your
Job
in 2017
BY GRANT CARDONE | Looking for
your dream job in the current market
can be a discouraging endeavour.
However, with the right attitude and
some essential tips and tricks, you
can figure out what you’re doing
wrong and how to steer things in the
right direction. With these skills in
hand, you can look forward to not just
securing employment, but landing
the job you’ve always wanted.
6 Steps to Get Your Dream Job
It’s one thing to
pitch yourself on a
computer screen,
quite another to
do it in person.
Unplug and
get outside.
Some of you are currently out of work.
Others of you are already employed
but want something better. It’s tough getting
a new job either way—and sending
out your resume just doesn’t cut it. Despite
what it may seem, there are many people
out there looking to hire, and I want to
encourage you today that you can get any
job you want, even if you are unemployed.
I know all about the things most job
seekers do wrong. Earlier this year I did a
reality TV series on hiring people.
I can assure you that most people
don’t know these six tips to get hired
in today’s marketplace:
NEVER RELY ON RESUMES
You should have a resume and you
need to keep it current and show all of
your accomplishments, but the resume
isn’t going to land you your job. I don’t
even look at someone’s resume at my
company. The resume is about what you
have done but all I care about is what
you can do for me in the future. Businesses
don’t hire a resume, they hire people
that can help the company bring in more
revenue. Never rely on a resume.
STOP COUNTING ON RECRUITERS
The truth is others shouldn’t need to
get you your next job. Headhunters and
recruiters are representing many people
and they won’t present you better than
you will. You need to have the mindset
that you are the only one that will make
this new job thing happen. Don’t leave it
up to recruiters and pass the responsibility
to them. You are dependent upon you.
DON’T DEPEND ON THE
HR DEPARTMENT
Seek to bypass HR even though this is
not politically correct. Your goal is to find
out who knows the players in the company
and get your story in front of the decision
makers. HR are just the gatekeepers.
It is the decision makers who have
the most invested in moving the company
forward. You want to get in front of them,
not in front of HR. That said, treat the HR
people like millionaires and you might
get to the decision makers.
QUIT LEANING ON THE INTERNET
Too many people do all their job searching
on social networking sites and while
they may be a good place to get a date,
it will not get you your dream job. Let the
other 25 million people depend on the
‘net’ while you get yourself physically in
front of decision makers. It’s one thing
to pitch yourself on a computer screen,
quite another to do it in person. Unplug
and get outside.
GET GREAT AT SELLING
Everything in life is a sale and everything
you want is a commission. If you
want a job, you will have to sell yourself.
Never go into an interview like the
majority do. They just are looking to be
interviewed. You go in to sell yourself.
70 January 2017 // Maximum Yield's Industry News

Never talk about
how you have been
let go wrongly or
how bad your past
employers were.
Stay positive &
be memorable.
Never communicate from the viewpoint
of what the company can do for you but
what you can do for the company. My
book Sell or Be Sold discusses how to
sell yourself to decision makers about
why you are the one they should hire.
SUPERFREAK THE INTERVIEW
I’m not talking about being crazy or
doing something dumb just for attention.
I’m talking about doing a great
presentation. Don’t talk about what you
have done in the past, but about what
you are going to do for the company
in the future. Make big claims and
focus on making the company revenue.
Things like being a team player,
loyalty, and dependability may be
some of your attributes, but they will
not land you your dream job. Keep your
focus on how you bring revenue to the
company—and never talk about how
you have been let go wrongly or how
bad your past employers were. Stay
positive and be memorable.
To get your dream job in 2017, take the attitude
that getting that job you want is now
your new job. If you have to spend 40 hours
a week doing it, then do it. For now, even if
you have to take something you consider
beneath you, take it until you can find that
job you do want. It is better to stay connected
in the workforce with less pay than
be disconnected from others. Besides, you
need the income from a job—any job.
Don’t listen to those that say no one is
hiring. It’s a lie. Plenty of people are
willing to hire GREAT people. There are
always businesses looking for productive,
solution-oriented people that can
grow their revenue. Have the attitude
that you will find your job and stay away
from other unemployed people who bitch
and moan about their lot in life.
