Dear Members and Friends,<br />
What a year it has been for Nordic Northwest!<br />
Thanks to all of you, we have been able to bring<br />
outstanding opportunities to Portland and the entire<br />
region that might never have happened otherwise.<br />
Just a few of the highlights include:<br />
Four soloists from the Royal Danish Opera performed<br />
in our Great Hall, as well as the worldfamous<br />
Emerson String Quartet, Portland Chamber<br />
Orchestra and Chamber Music Northwest.<br />
Swedish diplomat Caroline Vicini, Deputy Ambassador<br />
of the EU to the United States, spoke to a full<br />
house about world affairs<br />
We hosted an extensive exhibit about the Sami in<br />
Alaska and were able to involve some of Oregon’s<br />
Native American population in discussions of common<br />
issues of indigenous peoples<br />
Reindeer came to Nordia House in a program about<br />
the history reindeer have played in the Nordic<br />
countries and U.S.<br />
The Executive Director of Innovation Centre Denmark<br />
in Silicon Valley was the keynote speaker for<br />
our Nordic Business Council lunch with guests from<br />
Oregon’s Economic Development Department and<br />
the World Trade Center.<br />
Our Finnish architecture exhibit was an official part<br />
of Portland Design Week<br />
Acclaimed English actor Rainer Hersch performed<br />
his one-man show recreating an evening with Victor<br />
Borge.<br />
Thanks to a generous donation we were able to<br />
increase our Lucia Scholarships.<br />
Our Fastelavn celebration drew an overflow<br />
crowd, and both ScanFair and Midsummer drew<br />
record numbers.<br />
We had sold out Nordic Jewelry Classes, Fogelbo<br />
Tours, and Cook & Eats at Nordia House, and<br />
great topics at the Friday Night Lecture Series at<br />
PSU.<br />
We opened new lines of communication with the<br />
embassies of the Nordic countries in Washington,<br />
D.C., enhancing our ability to bring great programs<br />
to the Pacific Northwest<br />
Films have become a popular part of what we do<br />
here, with audiences ranging from 20 to 60 or<br />
more for each documentary and feature films.<br />
Our joint efforts with Broder Soder continued to<br />
flourish, not only with their activities attracting<br />
new visitors daily, but with fun and creative<br />
events like a Julbord, a Pickled Herring Dinner, a<br />
Crawfish Dinner, and more.<br />
We now estimate that between 40,000 and<br />
45,000 visitors pass through our doors yearly,<br />
giving us the opportunity to share our Mission<br />
of celebrating Nordic culture on an even broader<br />
platform than we ever imagined.<br />
