S naps, the little “clippy” things that are the links 

that hold different terminal tackles together. They 

must withstand heavy pressure exerted by hard 

fighting fishes as well as the angler. These little 

“tools” need to be tough and not open up under 

pressure. Recently we had a go with the Beast 

Snaps.

The Beast Snaps look like your normal “duo-lock” 

snaps but they have been tuned by the renown Extreme 

Angler to manage high drag pressure. Being 

“Extreme tuned” one knows that these snaps are 

the real deal.

Field Testing 

Most “duo-lock” snaps have one weakness. They 

open up easily during hard fights. The Beast Snap 

however is unlike most “duo-lock” snaps. They 

are made of tough stainless steel material and 

are designed to handle heavy pressure despite 

its size.

Taking On Gladia

To test these snaps we took them to the Natural 

Exotic Pond in Behrang, Perak and have them 

fight the hard fighting Amazon red tail catfishes 

there. But before going into battle, one needs to 

put on the snap. The Beast Snaps do take more 

effort in opening as they are built tough. Once 

they are in place, our tests started.

Within a few minutes the rod started bending and 

lines shot out of the reel despite being set to very 

high pressure. That is how willing the fishes here 

at the Natural Exotic Pond are to take one’s bait. 

These gladiators fight hard and the first few battles 

went on with very high drag (as we were testing 

the rod, line, and hook too). After about 2 to 3 

minutes the brute was landed.

We fought many brutes that day and we only used 

one snap. We need not change the snap as it did 

not open despite fighting the tough fighters under 

high pressure. That is how tough the Beast Snap 

snaps are.

Summary 

The Beast Snap is one heck of a tough snap to 

use. They may be tougher to install due to their 

toughness but they hold well without opening despite 

the high pressure. Personally, I rather use 

a tough snap than one that is easy to install but 

opens up during battles. The Beast Snap are certainly 

good snaps to have in one’s tackle box.

Test Drives The Asian Angler

F ishing lines are super important and 

all anglers want lines that are capable 

and able to improve their chances of 

catching fish by allowing for better sensitivity, 

better break strength, and lower 

diameter. A line that meets all these criteria 

is braid. We recently got to test out 

the new GT Zero Air PE Braid. 

Testing Grounds: Natural Exotic Pond, Behrang

Good Castability 

The GT Zero Air PE Braid is a pretty 

smooth line and being smooth allows 

it to easily glide through the guides 

of the fishing rod with low amounts 

of friction. This is probably due to the 

Teflon coating on the line that also 

acts as a protective coat. This translates 

to improved casting distances 

of which means that one covers more 

ground (or water) with every cast.

We recently took the GT Zero Air PE Braid 

to the new Natural Exotic Pond in Tanjung 

Malim, Perak; testing them against 

the hard fighting gladiators that lie await 

in these newly built arena.

The GT Zero Air PE Braid certainly casts 

pretty well sending our baits (fish meat) 

towards the area where the gladiators 

were hiding out. Within minutes our 

fishing rod took a bow signalling that a 

gladiator has taken the bait. 

With the drag set high, we started the 

first few fights using a “tug of war” technique 

where we the battles ensued using 

brute force against brute force. Despite 

high pressured fights the line stood its 

ground landing every fish that took the 

bait.

Conclusion 

With many wins and plenty of photos, we had a satisfying 

and successful field test. There was zero tackle 

failure and as far as the GT Zero Air PE Braid goes, it 

performed very well. Good knot strength, smooth, easy 

to cast with, and strong.

Decoy Dancing Jack 82 

Assist Hooks

J igging is certainly a fun fishing sport and with jigs 

comes the need for assists hooks as most jigs do not 

come with hooks. This brings us to the Decoy Dancing 

Jack 82 Assist Hooks from Decoy, a reputable 

hook brand in Japan.

Gold & Red 

The Decoy Dancing Jack 82 Assist Hooks uses 

gold coloured hooks with red nylon lines holding 

them in place, held securely with red shrink 

wrap. These hooks are really sharp and tough 

too. They can certainly take heavy pressure.

Taking On Diamonds 

The Decoy Dancing Jack 82 Assist Hooks were 

brought to Pekan recently for a “test drive” to see 

how they performed. Being sharp hooks they easily 

penetrated the lips of hard fighting diamond 

trevallies with a few good strikes.

Tough & Strong 

Despite heavy pressure placed on the hook by 

both fish and angler, the Decoy Dancing Jack 

82 Assist Hooks held on well. The hooks did not 

open nor did they break under pressure. Battles 

took some time but before long, the anglers 

proved victorious. The hooks stood up to the 

fights well.

A bu Garcia has a new line of low profile reels under 

the Revo name that will be hitting the stores in a 

few months time. These well known reels look sleeker 

than their already sleek looking predecessors and 

they come with a sportier design that sits very well 

and comfortably in one’s palm. One of them is the

Sportiness

When it comes to design, Abu Garcia’s product team 

certainly had a challenge as the current line up of Revo 

reels look so good, and they stood up to that challenge

Some of the favourite reels amongst pro anglers

do. One can fish off the beach 

(away from the main public

jetty. Personally I prefer 

to fish at the private jetty as it 

is quieter and the river mouth 

it sits in is where fishes swim in 

and out of the river. For baits, 

squid can be purchased at the 

resort to be used as baits.

Another reason why I prefer 

fishing here at the jetty is because 

it is quiet and away from 

the crowd... in another words, 

peace and tranquility.

Great Place For... 

Picking Clams

The beach here is famous for 

clams. With a bucket in hand, 

one can go about picking 

clams. These clams can be 

boiled and eaten. Should you 

decide to do so, do wash them 

well as they live in the sandy 

bottom of the beach and thus 

contain bits of sand. Clams 

can also be used as bait for 

fishing.

Fun Horse Riding 

Should one want to experience riding a horse on 

a beach, horse riding is available at the beach. 

Put on a helmet for safety and be on your way 

(with a guide holding on of course). Should you 

decide to do horse riding or any other activity 

that requires one to wear a helmet that is shared 

by many; bring along a shower cap for hygiene 

purpose. Put on the shower cap before putting 

on the helmet.

Fun Archery

Perhaps one has harboured dreams of becoming 

Robin Hood. Fulfil those dreams here and 

try your hand at archery; taking aim and shooting 

at hay target boards. There are bows and 

arrows to cater for younger teens and adults.

Archery can be a dangerous activity and as 

such; do follow the instructions of the instructors 

and adhere to the rules to ensure any untoward 

accidents are avoided.

ATV Thrills 

For those that want more excitement, a ride on 

an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) will feed that want. 

The ride goes through a designated track. Handling 

the ATV is in itself is a fun and exciting 

experience, drifting about the sand (or rather 

losing control) and trying to go in a straight line.

ATV rides are plenty of fun and something 

that I highly recommend. Note too that 

it can be dangerous and ATVs are real 

vehicles and must be handled with care.

Jet Ski Rides

After zipping about on land 

in an ATV, why not zip about 

on water. Jet Skis are lots of 

fun. They are like ATVs but on 

water. They are fast on water 

too allowing one to enjoy 

the wind in one’s face as well 

as splashes of water. As with 

all crafts that goes fast; it is 

important to adhere to safety 

rules.

Banana Boat 

Ride

Another thrilling fast ride is 

one on a banana boat being 

towed by a motorboat. Hold 

on tight as the banana boat 

zips on the water going over 

waves creating a bouncy thrilling 

fun ride as one gets wet 

from splashes of seawater. It 

is a ride one must experience 

to feel the thrill and exhilaration 

of a boat that is named 

after a fruit.

Kayaking

If speed is not your thing perhaps canoeing will 

be. Canoeing about Remis Beach (the beach 

that the resort is built on) is fun. One gets to 

takes one’s time and slowly row about the area. 

Another fun thing that I like to do when canoeing 

and kayaking is to chase and ride the waves 

back to shore.

Island Hopping

Island hopping is one of the must do activities 

when one visits a beach resort such as 

the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut. 

Exploring some of the islands around the area 

having fun and shooting photos is a good way 

to capture the moments.

Snorkelling 

Snorkelling too is lots of fun exploring the underwater 

world around the waters off Lumut. That said, Lumut 

in itself is not famous for snorkelling but certain 

places nearer to Pangkor Island allows for snorkelling 

with good visibility.

Visit Pangkor 

Or if being in water is something you do not want to 

do or have already done, why not take a boat ride to 

Pangkor Island and just spend a few hours visiting 

the area. Pangkor Island is famous for its sea produce 

such as dried fish, squid, etc. It also has attractions 

like the Dutch Fort, Tiger Rock or Historic Rock 

(Batu Bersurat), boat building ship yard, etc.

Relax & Rejuvenate 

After doing all these fun filled adventurous activities, 

perhaps it is time to relax and rejuvenate. One can 

do so at the Samsara Spa. The Samsara Spa offers 

pampering massages, various treatments such 

as body wraps, facial and nail care, etc.; wonderful 

ways to bring peace and calm to one’s soul.

Golfing 

Holidaying at a beach resort is not all about getting 

wet in seawater and getting sand on your feet. The 

Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut has a golf 

course too called the Damai Laut Golf And Country 

Club.

at the Swiss-Garden Beach 

Resort Damai Laut in Lumut, Perak 

recently.

Away From The 

Crowd 

Being an angler I tend to look out 

for places to go fishing at especially 

when I am on holiday. On my 

recent visit to the Swiss-Garden 

Beach Resort Damai Laut with 

my family, special arrangements 

were made and I had the opportunity 

to dine and fish at the resort’s 

private jetty; and yes, we dined in 

private too.

Safe & Secure

The private jetty of the resort is used to send 

guests of the resort to Pangkor Island. It is a 

wooden floating platform linked to land by a 

concrete bridge. It has railings along its sides 

except for the areas where the boats are secured 

to. This helps keep people from falling 

over and into the river.

Nice Place For Fun 

Fishing 

Being a jetty it is a safe and fun 

place to do some fun fishing. We 

caught a good number of fishes 

such as scads and threadfin 

breams on apollo rigs. I used one 

of them as live-bait but missed the 

incoming tide (best tide to fish). 

The best time to fish is when the 

tide comes in. This brings more 

fish such as barramundis into the 

river. They swim past the jetty as 

they make their way back in.

Dining Like VIPs 

Want to feel like a VIP? We 

certainly did feel like VIPs as 

we dined at the jetty while 

our fishing rods waited for a 

fish to bite. We were the only 

ones there apart from the F&B 

staffs, the chef, and security. 

The jetty was decorated with 

lanterns that created a warm 

romantic atmosphere.

The chef cooked on site preparing 

awesome Italian cuisine 

that we ordered earlier. 

We were given cold towels 

to cool off as dinner started 

to be served beginning with 

a tasty mushroom room soup 

in a bun, followed by the main 

course, and ending with dessert.

Everything served was delicious 

and the atmosphere of 

the jetty, the special feeling 

one gets when being pampered 

in a place away from 

the crowd makes the experience 

so very good, I cannot 

find words good enough to 

explain. It is the best dining 

experience ever. Should you 

visit the Swiss-Garden Beach 

Resort, Damai Laut; I highly 

recommend this dining experience 

called “Fish & Feast” 

especially when you want to 

impress that special someone.

Restaurant Kopi Aik Hooi 

Tucked away from the busy Lumut Waterfront 

town is a little known coffee shop called 

Restaurant Kopi Aik Hooi, a place frequent by 

the locals. We chanced upon it on our way out 

of the Lumut Waterfront Town and decided to 

stop for a meal although we just had one at the 

Waterfront.

Otak-Otak

Otak-otak is a local delicacy made 

of chili, curry, fish, etc. wrapped 

in a leaf. Otak-otak is rather common 

these days; mostly wrapped 

in a palm leaf, and barbecued. I 

prefer the original steamed Nyonya 

type but these days they are 

hard to come by. Restaurant Kopi 

Aik Hooi is one place where one 

can find the original Teochew style 

otak-otak that is also steamed, 

and the taste is heavenly. 

What I like about the otak-otak 

here is that it is cooked with big 

chunks of fish, a tasty concoction 

of curry, chili, and herbs, but 

a special leaf gives it a very fragrant 

flavour. The otak-otak here 

is rather spicy. For those unable 

to handle spicy food prepare a 

glass of water before digging in.

Basic But Tasty 

The food here is basic but tasty. I enjoyed a 

lovely bowl of curry laksa (a curry noodle dish) 

that has beans, barbecued pork strips, and tofu 

cooked in rich soupy curry. We also had a bowl 

of noodles with shredded chicken in soup that 

this place is famous for. While these are delicious, 

the winner (to me personally) is...

The Abu Garcia 2017 Road Tour 

– Bintulu Challenge was held recently 

in Bintulu on the 6th of May 

2017. The Road Tour was held as 

a medium to give anglers an opportunity 

to know about the latest 

products from Abu Garcia and an 

opportunity for anglers to have 

fun through a mini tournament 

and lucky draw with a chance of 

winning prizes such as the latest 

Revo4 MGXtreme 2 reels, Xrossfield 

7 reel and Xrossfield rod from 

Abu Garcia. The Road Tour was 

jointly organized by Pure Fishing 

Malaysia and Bintulu Fishing 

Community, a Fishing Club based 

in Bintulu.

The event was held at Tanjung 

Batu Beach, Bintulu. This is the 

main stage where tents were set 

up for registration and a product 

showcase. The stage overlooks 

the rocky banks of Tanjung Batu 

Beach making it just perfect for 

the event. There were concerns 

of bad weather following weather 

forecasts which showed that the 

weather during the event might 

be bad. However things turned 

out well with clear skies and calm 

seas.

119 participants attended the 

event .A total of 161 participants 

were registered through online 

registration and walk-in registration 

during the event. Registered 

participants received a goody 

bag, a participant tag, and a slot to 

compete in the mini tournament. It 

was great to see participants of all 

ages attending the event. Participants 

came from around Bintulu, 

Mukah, Miri, Sibu, Kuching and 

even as far as Johor.

The event started with a briefing 

on the event flow, tournament 

guidelines, and safety guidelines; 

at 7:45 am. After the briefing a photograph 

session was held quickly 

before the mini tournament began 

at 8:30am. The mini tournament 

was set to end at 12 pm. As the 

mini tournament went on, a product 

showcase was held at the main 

stage. Some participants joined 

the mini tournament while some 

who gave up early went to look at 

the product showcase. Some participants 

even came just to visit 

the product showcase.

At the product showcase participants 

were given a chance to try 

out some of the latest rods and 

reels from Abu Garcia. The field 

below the main stage made for 

a great casting range. These two 

participants (pic) above were students 

from Bintulu Vocational College 

who came just to check out 

the showcase.

Malaysia representative manned 

the showcase booth and he also 

conducted some demo sessions 

for visitors. Mr. Kay’s vast knowledge 

of Abu Garcia products was 

shared with anyone who asked.

The new Abu Garcia Revo LV7 

was one of the reels from the latest 

Abu Garcia Revo4 platform on 

display. The whole range of Revo4 

reels was on display for the showcase 

alongside some Abu Garcia 

rods. Some setups were prepared 

for participants to try out. The highlight 

was the Revo4 MGXtreme2 

–the lightest baitcasting reel in 

the world at just 128 grams. It was 

passed from person to person. Everyone 

who visited the showcase 

was eager to try it out.

Meanwhile at the tournament, 

marshals were kept busy with a 

constant amount of catches from 

participants. One rule was catches 

must have a minimum weight 

of 100grams to qualify. For participant 

#052 (pic) his grouper is 

just 5 grams short of the minimum 

weight limit.

A well dressed participant with 

his catch which was also short of 

the minimum weight limit. All the 

catches during the tournament 

were various grouper species. 

Tanjung Batu beach has a history 

of some impressive catches such 

as barramundi, mangrove jacks 

and even giant trevally but unfortunately 

the calm seas on the 

event day only made it possible 

to catch groupers. In Bintulu the 

waters have to be rough to create 

a chance for other species to 

be caught. Clear waters and calm 

seas meant that bigger fish would 

not come close to shore.

Participant #021, Mr.Andy from 

Mukah with his 140gram grouper 

which secured his 3rd place in the 

mini tournament. Coming all the 

way from Mukah was certainly 

worth it for Mr.Andy and I am sure 

he drove back home with a smile.

This 215 gram grouper gave participant 

#116, Mr.Mohamad his 

first place finish. The tournament 

was based on the heaviest catch 

weight and Mr.Mohammad’s single 

catch might just be one of his 

greatest grouper catches as it won 

him the new Revo4 MGXtreme2, 

a superb prize for his first place 

finish.

Berkley Powerbait soft plastics. 

Another rule for the tournament 

was hardbaits of any brands were 

allowed but if an angler chose to 

use soft plastics – only Berkley 

products were allowed. The Berkley 

Powergrub was one of the top 

baits during the tournament as it 

brought consistent catches of all 

sizes.

All fishes caught during the mini 

tournament were released safely 

after weighing. This ensures that 

the fun can continue for anglers 

that come to Tg.Batu beach to fish.

After the mini tournament ended 

at 12:00 pm., Mr. Kay conducted 

a showcase on the latest Revo4 

platform of reels from Abu Garcia. 

Mr. Kay talked about the advantage 

of each model, their different 

braking systems, tuning opportunities 

and what kind of application 

each model was suited for.

After the showcase, a prize giving 

ceremony was held. Here is Mr. 

Ong Boon Cheng, product manager 

of Pure Fishing Malaysia 

handing the first place prize to Mr. 

Mohamad Bin Madili. The second 

place was claimed by Mr. Aswandi 

Bin Zaini. The third place went 

to Mr.Andy from Mukah. The ceremony 

was followed with 2 special 

categories which are the earliest 

registered participant that went to 

Mr. Ehsan Bin Ibrahim, and most 

veteran participant; Mr.Hanif Ahmad. 

After that a lucky draw session 

was held with 20 lucky winners.

Many anglers voiced their 

opinion that the event should be

in Rompin, 2017 in Bintulu, and 

in 2018 only Pure Fishing knows 

where. One will have to wait and 

see.
