Photo by Alex Leith MY LEWES: HUW JONES, PUBLICAN; TOWN COUNCILLOR Are you local? I was born in hospital in Brighton, which means I can’t claim to be a ‘Lewes Rook’ (ie someone born and bred). But apart from a three-year stint at Swansea University I’ve lived in Lewes all my life. How did you get involved in the pub trade? It was nothing to do with what I did at university - English and Ancient History! I was working at Harvey’s, a friend of mine was offered the job as assistant manager at Pelham Arms, but couldn’t do it, so I applied and got the job. After a year there I worked for Mike Caulfield at the Elly, until 2007, when I ended up buying the lease from him. I’ve run the place ever since, first with my then business partner Dec, and after with my wife Hannah. Do you go to other boozers? The great thing about Lewes boozers is that there’s one for every mood you’re in. If I want to read a book I’ll go to the Lewes Arms; if I want a bit more life I’ll go to the Lansdown. What’s your poison? I must admit to being a dirty lager drinker most of the time, because I like my beer to be cold. I’ve also got a taste for strong craft beers, but there are only so many 7.5% IPAs you can drink before you fall over. We had a micro-brewery in the pub for a bit – it’s taken a back seat at the moment for various reasons – and doing that as a two-man team has made me realise how much effort goes into making beer. Can you recommend a good restaurant? Our four year old, Edie, leads us to ASK every time. If it’s just me and Hannah we’ll go to Erawan, the Thai place, who are consistently excellent. How did you get to be a town councillor? I talked to my friends about politics so much that when a by-election came up I decided to put my money where my mouth was. I’m an Independent; I have to admit I don’t sit on some of the more time consuming panels. Anything you don’t like about Lewes? I don’t like the entrenched attitudes around the ‘DFL’ issue. There have been newcomers to town as long as Lewes has existed. Some people can’t see that outsiders coming in can bring good things to the town; some incomers think that they can teach the ‘quaint’ residents a thing or two. Bonfire is a great leveller, because everybody can get together and get to know each other. So is the pub! Are you Bonfire? I wasn’t a society member till I started work at the Elly [Commercial Square HQ], but I didn’t miss a Bonfire Night before that. When other people from outside Lewes say ‘oh, we’ve got Bonfire celebrations here, too’, I say: ‘no you haven’t’. Where would you live if not in Lewes? I’d like to say Rhossili, near Swansea, but I think I’d get bored there after a while. Interview by Alex Leith 11
