ART & ABOUT
In town this month
The exhibition of photographs from Farleys House and
Gallery continues at Pelham House until the 31st. Lee
Miller and A Tale of Two Houses is an exhibition in two
parts: photographs by Lee Miller showing a cross-section
of her fashion, friends and Sussex-inspired photographic
work are shown alongside an exhibition of interiors photographs
taken by Brighton-based photographer, Tony
Tree, of both Charleston and Farleys House. Read an
interview with Tony on pg 48.
Tony Tree
Described as 'The Lover and Poet
of the South Downs', Brightonbased
painter Julian Le Bas has
lately been ‘seeking to find the
rhythmical relationship between
the ancient South Down forms of
Mount Caburn and Firle Beacon’. See his progress at a
solo show at St Anne’s Galleries in Lewes from the 7th
(more on pg 45).
Victor Bowley
Susan Lynch
This month, Chalk Gallery
features the work of Susan
Lynch. Working in acrylics and
oils, Susan applies paint to canvas
and linen, pulling and pushing
the colour around with her
palette knife and allowing images to emerge ‘as if
by magic’. See the mysterious abstractions from the
9th until the 29th.
Also from the 7th and until the 29th,
Martyrs' Gallery have Ways of Seeing,
an exhibition of work by husband-andwife
team Victor Bowley and Joyce
Corbett. The pair have influenced one
another over the years, both using the
conventions of geometry to compile
non-verbal messages in their work,
Bowley in abstract mark-making in ink
and Corbett in assemblages of found
objects. [martyrs.gallery]
There’s a novel
exhibition taking place at
Chandlers Bathroom
Showroom on Davey’s
Lane from the 10th.
Twenty Sussex artists
will be creating original
works on… wooden
toilet seats. The bespoke seats are all for sale and
money raised will be donated to acquired brain injury
charity, Headway East Sussex. [chandlersbathrooms.
