SIR HARRY KROTO was a
distinguished scientist whose
work won international recognition.
He came to Lewes in
1967 to work in the Chemistry
department at Sussex University.
He was awarded the Nobel
Prize for Chemistry in 1996 for
his role in the discovery of C60,
a new form of carbon which he
named Buckminsterfullerene
after the architect Buckminster
Fuller who designed a geodesic
dome with a similar structure.
HARRY was always ready to acknowledge that the discovery of C60 would not
have been possible without the involvement of scientists of all backgrounds,
but it was his imagination, lateral thinking, persistence, and inspiration that
brought these collaborations together.
Harry Kroto was a dear friend: a brilliant scientist, educator,
artist and wine-lover and a great fan of Breaky Bottom wine.
The recently released 2013 Cuvée Sir Harry Kroto is dedicated to him.
