Weekend with Coleridge
THERE WILL BE CHIMES, rhymes and historic times at Ottery St. Mary
on the weekend of Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd October as the town
marks the life and works of its most famous son and Devon’s most
illustrious poet and philosopher, Samuel Taylor Coleridge (STC).
BEAUTIFUL / ECLECTIC / INSPIRED / UNIQUE
It also marks the launch of the fundraising
appeal by the Coleridge Memorial
Trust to erect a statue of the great man,
to stand in the churchyard where once
he played.
At 3.00 pm on the Friday the town’s
beautiful St. Mary’s Church hosts
poetry readings by pupils from Kings
- his old school - together with Laurie
Palmer and broadcaster Oscar Pearson
in full historic costume.
At 7.00 pm Dr. Sandra Tuppen of the
British Library gives a talk on the great
man and lays out some of Coleridge’s
original manuscripts, and the sculptor
Nicholas Dimbleby reveals details of
his STC statue.
On Saturday at 9.30 am (STC’s birthday)
the church hosts a Coleridge Exhibition
- whilst the town will echo to a quarter
peal of bells in his honour, sponsored
by Otter Vale Probus to mark its own
30th anniversary. A celebratory lunch
rounds off the day at the Tumbling Weir
hotel, arranged by the joint organisers
and promoters of the weekend, the
Ottery Heritage Society, where the
speaker will be historian and writer,
Dr. Todd Gray.
On Sunday the exhibition continues
throughout the day and there will be
a guided walk around ‘The Coleridge
Link’ led by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
himself! (That’s this generation’s Samuel
Taylor Coleridge you understand).
