The Cooler Months
Mists and cooler weather add an air
of mystery to the heath, you can see
in this photo that spiders proliferate
in this type of habitat.

A permanent battle is being waged to
keep the growth down - gorse, bracken
and trees can easily overwhelm this
fragile, man-made habitat. Using
animals to keep the growth down
is the traditional method, alongside
burning.
Core Hill under snow
Core Hill's where most of the photos for this
heathland feature were taken - see if you can
spot the wild life in this shot, and yes, I do mean
'wild ' in every sense of the word, - perfectly
camouflaged and in its natural environment,
possibly a relic from the 'Ice Age', the bicolour
Jack Russell, the tan and white matching both
leaves and snow, a perfect adaptation that
comes into its own over the winter months - of
course it's Devonshire's own Jack, celebrating
his 10th birthday this year.
Jack's an interesting character, as indeed
all Jack Russells tend to be, having a list of
unsavoury habits as long as your arm, capable
of alerting the whole household at any time of
the day or night in the event of a leaf dropping,
afeared of water deeper than his knees, and
able to keep up continuous whining for hours
if he's not entirely happy when you're out
enjoying a coffee, or having a relaxing pub
lunch. He's also the scourge of Postie (our
post resides in a box outside as a result).

you're one of a kind!
