10 Questions
Malibu Half Marathon & 5K
mixes up its course in 2017
with Eric Truschke
Eric Truschke, 16, is a junior
who plays wide receiver and defensive
end for Sharks football.
How did you first get into
football?
Freshman year my friend that I
was on other teams with thought
I would be good at it and asked
me to go out there with him. I
did it and loved it.
Are there any skills you
learned as a receiver that
helped you as a defensive
end or vice versa?
It certainly has. As a receiver,
it taught me to avoid people or
dodge and as a defensive end
you need to get around people
and contain and be quick.
What are your hobbies
outside of football?
I live in Malibu so I love to surf
and do anything ocean-related.
I also have a job here at Malibu
Yogurt. They call me the ice
cream king.
What do you like about
playing for coach Terry
Shorten?
I really like how he focuses
on the younger players a lot as
well as the varsity players. He
knows that the younger athletes
are going to be the future for the
program. When I was a younger
player I know that really helped
me a lot.
Where do you think you’ve
most improved from last
year to this year?
Me personally and the team
I know have improved our
aggression to the ball. Malibu
High isn’t known for being
the biggest team, but we easily
make that up with our aggressiveness
to tackle and our skill.
How do you feel about this
season so far?
I feel really good about how this
season is going. We started off
strong and we didn’t stop there.
We kept pushing and working
hard. Every single person out
there on the field has earned it.
Do you have a favorite
track to listen to before a
game?
Me and some of the boys on
the team actually like country
music, so we listen to “Cotton-
Eyed Joe.”
Suzy Demeter/22nd Century Media
Who has the best nickname
on the team?
There is a tall, skinny kid who
runs kind of awkward, but he is
our good friend. We said he runs
like an asparagus so we call him
Gus. It’s stuck ever since.
What’s your favorite
subject in school
and why?
Math, because I like to figure
out problems and challenge myself.
I also have a great teacher
in Mr. Segesman who helps me
out a lot.
What’s your favorite TV
show right now?
My favorite by far is “The Office,”
which is way too funny.
The DEAN & DELUCA Malibu
Half Marathon & 5K returns
on Sunday, Nov. 5, with an exciting
change: an all-new course that
begins and ends at iconic Zuma
Beach.
The mostly flat, out-and-back
course takes runners by some of the
most beautiful residential homes of
A-list celebrities. Then it opens up
to breathtaking ocean views on one
side and the golden Santa Monica
Mountains on the other.
The new location will allow runners
and spectators to conveniently
park in one of the Zuma Beach
parking lots adjacent to the start/
finish line. Known for its wide
stretches of sand and excellent surf,
Zuma also serves as the perfect
spot for the post-race party. With a
DJ keeping the energy high, participants
will take in yoga on the sand
(hosted by Malibu-based 5 Point
Yoga), health-conscious vendors,
and a VIP lounge with massages
and premium catering.
