City takes home environmental
achievement awards from ILG
Submitted by the City of Malibu
The City of Malibu received a Beacon
Spotlight Award from the Institute for Local
Government for outstanding achievements
to address climate change, promote
energy innovation and create more sustainable
communities.
ILG recognized the City of Malibu with
a Gold Level Award for 14 percent energy
savings and a Silver Level Award in sustainability
best practices.
“Malibu’s natural beauty is world famous,
and a big part of the reason why
people love living here,” said Mayor Skylar
Peak. “So it’s a very proud moment
when the City is recognized as an environmental
leader for our efforts to protect the
earth and our community for current and
future generations.”
To reduce its energy use, the City moved
operations into a new and more energyefficient
City Hall building in 2011. The
building’s energy-saving design features
include Solatube skylights, more ambient
light, energy-saving window coatings, and
motion-activated and timed lighting systems.
The City’s general sustainability practices
include environmentally friendly
purchasing, a green vehicle fleet, electric
vehicle charging stations, PCH bike route
Only 50 spots available
for City’s first aid class
Submitted by the City of Malibu
The City of Malibu will be offering a
free Crisis First Aid Class for Malibu community
members from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday,
Oct. 21, at City Hall.
“We are all shocked and saddened by the
senseless shooting that took so many innocent
lives in Las Vegas, and we know that
violent incidents can happen anywhere,” said
Mayor Skylar Peak. “Many lives were saved
in Las Vegas by capable bystanders who acted
quickly. One of the best things we can do
to be prepared, and to feel more secure, is to
get some basic emergency first aid training.”
When tragedy strikes, it is often up to
bystanders to administer emergency first
aid until professional first responders arrive.
The class will cover the first aid skills
needed to help save a life in a crisis situation,
including patient assessment, opening
the airway, bleeding control and handsonly
CPR. Minutes can sometimes mean
the difference between life and death, and
these skills may help save the life of a family
member or friend.
The class is meant to be a basic skills
training for immediate life safety during
the short time between a life-threatening
injury and the arrival of paramedics. The
class does not provide comprehensive first
aid certification.
The class size is limited to 50 people;
early RSVPs are strongly encouraged. To
RSVP, or for more information, call Public
Safety Manager Susan Dueñas at (310)
456-2489 ext. 313 or email SDuenas@
Bestselling author up next in
Malibu Library Speaker Series
Early RSVPs recommended for
Jeannette Walls’ presentation
Submitted by the City of Malibu
The 2017 Malibu Library Speaker Series
continues with Jeannette Walls, journalist
and author of the best-selling memoir “The
Glass Castle,” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24,
at Malibu City Hall.
“I applaud the Cultural Arts Commission
and the Malibu Library for consistently
bringing in world-class authors, performers,
athletes, scientists and filmmakers who discuss
subjects that are relevant and important
to Malibu residents,” said Mayor Skylar
Peak. “Every Speaker Series event offers education,
entertainment and enlightenment.”
In “The Glass Castle,” Walls offers readers
a glimpse into the joys and struggles of
her childhood, her life, and her charismatic
but dysfunctional family. The memoir has
sold over 4.5 million copies in the U.S., has
been translated into 30 languages, and was
developed into a major motion picture starring
Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts that
opened in July 2017. Space will be extremely
limited, so early RSVPs are recommended.
“The Glass Castle” has been on The New
York Times’ bestseller list for more than
six years and was named one of the “Top
10 Books of the Decade” by Amazon.com.
Walls’ life story gives hope to those facing
challenges and makes them realize anything
is possible. Her follow-up to “The Glass
Castle,” “Half Broke Horses: A True Life
Novel,” was an immediate New York Times
bestseller and was called “essential reading”
by Library Journal.
Her latest book, “The Silver Star,” is also
a New York Times bestseller that critics
have called a captivating, read-in-one-sitting,
coming-of-age adventure.
The event features a Q&A with Walls and
a book signing, and a reception with refreshments.
The event is free and open to all, but
space is limited, so RSVPs are required.
Malibu City Hall is located at 23825 Stuart
Ranch Road. For more information, or
