“rob less shops, use cars less, turn off the lights, use less
energy and kill less animals.”
I BELIEVE THE WORLD COULD BE A BETTER
PLACE IF …
we all love one another, do less crimes, rob less
shops, use cars less, turn off the lights, use less
energy and kill less animals.
I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE MORE CARE…
of their bodies and the environment.
TO BE AT ONE MEANS…
taking care of yourself and others, keeping
yourself healthy, making tasty food, going out for
walks in the forest.
TO BE MINDFUL IS…
to make yourself happy by meditating, if you
want to.
I BELIEVE THE SOUL IS ...
like a spirit, a vessel in your body you carry. You
can nourish it through meditation. When we die
your spirit and soul will go with you whereever
we go next depending on whether you’re good
or bad. You might go to heaven or you might
get reincarnateded and come back as a dog or a
human.
SPIRITUALITY MEANS TO ME …
to believe in a higher power, a higher realm and
angels although its hard to believe unless you
see it. I suppose when you die noththing could
happen. Its a hard one.
THREE TIPS TO BE HEALTHY…
eat loads of vegetables, go for long walks or jogs
and practice chi gong - it’s good for your mind
and soul.
STYLE TO ME IS…
wearing cool clothes, cool sunglasses and shoes,
and it helps get the girls or boys after you.
IF I COULD BE INVISIBLE I WOULD…
I cant say what I’m thinking, its naughty, i think it
will get me in trouble.
or i could be a spy.
IF I COULD HAVE MORE OF SOMETHING …
romance, a girlfriend and love.
IF I COULD HAVE LESS OF SOMETHING…
less sickness, less fat round my belly and less
cold weather.
DIVERSITY IS…
When we’re not all the same as each other we are
not doing the same stuff we don’t look the same
and it makes the world a lot better place.
G R E A
EXPEC-
TATI-
ONS
Words By Paul Scadding
T E R
As a life coach, I work with many people
who come to me seeking ways to be
happier, feel better and live a more joyous
life. A first step in guiding clients toward
their goals and dreams - is to uncover and
examine their beliefs about life. Beliefs
are simply ideas that we have accepted as
truth. By the time that we are just 5 years
old, we have a complete belief system
from which we operate and live our lives.
As children, we soaked up information
about life, how it seems to work and our
potential from the adults around us. If for
example, your parents were happy, had
worked on themselves, and dissolved their
fears and limitations - then chances are
they passed on some wonderful beliefs
to you. If the adults around you were
angry, frightened, unkind or even abusive,
then it’s highly likely that you picked
up some very negative beliefs that are
perhaps getting in the way in your adult
life. This is not to create blame or guilt in
any way - because we need to embrace
the idea that everyone is always doing
the best they can with the knowledge,
awareness, wisdom and understanding
that they have at the time. No one gets
it “right” all the time. “It’s only when we
know better that we can do better” - as
the poet Maya Angelou once wrote. That
is why for me - personal growth and the
pursuit of wisdom are so important, if we
want better than our parents were able to
teach us, and we want to move past their
limitations, we need to seek out new ideas
and create new beliefs for ourselves.
People often come to me in need of
help with anxiety and depression, and
having suffered with both myself in the
past - I am always happy to assist. In
my experience, people who suffer with
anxiety, are telling themselves a really
awful limiting story about what the
future holds for them, and then waiting
for it to become real - all the while
feeling stressed, depressed and fearful.
This is a misuse of our imaginations.
Life has infinite possibilty, so if we
want something different than what
we currently have, we need to order
something different from life’s menu and
tune into new ideas about how we can live
life. I find that when we examine a client’s
beliefs, release the old negative patterns
and create better-feeling thoughts, the
anxiety goes away, usually very quickly.
In short, I help people to gain greater
expectations for their lives.
Our personal reality is formed by the
thoughts we think, the words we use, the
feelings we experience and the actions
we take. Scientific studies in the field of
neurology tell us that the average human
being has 70,000 thoughts a day. It also
tells us that over 90% of these thoughts
are the same as the day before and the
day before - and so on. In essence our
limitations in life are a limit of thought,
of imagination of expectation! Once we
focus our attention on what we do want
rather than what we don’t, the mind can
then start seeking it out. If you lack
money, thinking about the lack does not
bring you prosperity, if you are ill, thinking
about pain does not get you well. We need
to expect that we will have more, get well
and then we give the mind a clear picture
to create.
What are you expecting from life? Do
you expect to live a long happy life,
surrounded by people who love and
support you both in life and in work? Do
you plan to enjoy life with someone you
trust and who loves and respects you?
I was with a client recently, and I noted
that as she was updating me on her life
since the last time we had spoken, she
kept saying “It’s always one thing after
another.” - this was not said in a “people
keep giving me flowers, presents and cake
and life is a joy” kind of way. I pointed
out to her that using phrases like this on
a frequent basis (which she realised she
was), was painting a really bad future
for her. She soon realised that this was
something her Mother used to say often.
Essentially, this client was holding a
belief, a subconcious expectation that bad
Be.one - 24 - Wellness
things would happen to her, this thought
was creating a feeling in her body and this
became her point of attraction. For those
of you that don’t know about the law of
attraction, essentially things that are like
themselves are drawn to each other, and
we become what we think about. You see,
we need to impress upon our subconcious
minds pictures of loving relationships,
work that we love, prosperity of every
kind, a belief that life is loving and
supportive, and a picture of vibrant health,
if that is what you want.
To expect better, you need to think
better feelings, thoughts and prepare for
happiness - expect it and then take action
to bring it about. I meet so many people
who tell me they are seeking love but
when I ask them what they really believe
about the potential for love, their beliefs
and thoughts are in opposition to the
things that they say they want. We need
to be in harmony with something if we
are to have it. These subconcious beliefs
then sabotage the person from taking any
action, to come into proximity of the thing
that they want. In a most basic sense the
things you want cannot just materialise
out of thin air, you need to take action to
make them happen. But you also need to
expect that they will come and believe
that you deserve them.
So how do we change our thinking so
that we can change our lives? The best
technique I know for creating personal
change is to use affirmations. An
affirmation is basically anything that we
say or think, but when we use it as a self
development tool or life affirming practice
as I call it, the words and thoughts need
to follow a three point pattern. Firstly the
words need to be said in present tense. If
you say “One day I will have more money.”
the mind cannot recognise it as it is in
future tense, which in turn does not seem
Be.one - 25 - Wellness
“Practice, Patience and Persistence”
to be of any importance, thus it gets
kicked into the long grass and forgotten
about. Remember we need to signal to
the brain that has your 70,000 thoughts
to pick through, that this is important - so
instead of the above we would say “My
income IS constantly increasing.” The
second point for working with affirmations
is that they need to be positive, and
there is a good reason for this - the
subconcious part of the mind where your
beliefs are held, has no discernment or
judgement, so if you were to affirm “I
don’t want to be ill” the subconcious does
not hear “I don’t want” it will just hear “BE
ILL”, and this impresses a picture in the
mind, and then in the body and hey presto
you will get what you asked for even
though you may not have meant to.
A note here about affirmations is that
one stray thought does not impress upon
the mind, it’s a little like planting a seed
but never watering it - it’s very unlikely to
grow. The third point about affirmations
is that they need to be personal i.e
something that you truly want to believe
and create in your life. Affirming “My
income is constantly increasing”, does
not of course bring you more money in
that second, but if you want it to be true
you need to buy into the idea. If you
say the affirmation thinking it’s a load
of nonsense, you are undermining the
process.
A further three ingredients that you need
to help these new beliefs grow is Practice,
Patience and Persistence. Practice your
affirmations as often as you can - these
seeds of new ideas need your attention
if they are to grow, so repeat them often.
Nurture involves patience, so trust in the
creation of these new beliefs exactly the
way that you would if you planted an apple
seed - you don’t get a tree overnight!
And lastly be persistent - keep at it and
have faith that it will work for you at the
perfect time, you need to have faith even
if there is no sign of the thing showing up.
Remember its’ darkest just before dawn.
Please know that you deserve to live a
happy life, just because you exist! I do
not believe we are on this planet to be
stressed and scared. You are the only
thinker in your mind and you are more
powerful than you have likely ever been
told. You have the power to affect and
change your life and live life based on
your terms, free from lack and limiting
beliefs.
Lets Make Tea
Tea has a place in every single culture
throughout the world, and loose leaf tea is
making a resurgence in recent times, with
new tea bars and tea shops popping up all
the time. And who knew tea could change
somebodys life. For me it did just that.
Be.one - 28 - Food
A little while ago I found myself at a crossroads
in my life. My son had started nursery and I was
looking to return to work. I had been selling
jewellery online from home during my maternity
leave but I am a people person and missed the
face to face interactions and banter. I looked and
found plenty of jobs that I could have done and
found some satisfaction in but I wanted a job that
I loved. One that felt like a passion and not ‘work’.
I was adamant that I would not be apart from my
son for just any old job.
One day I came across an advert for a position in
a tea shop and the excitement I felt and my gut
instinct told me that this was exactly what I had
been hoping for and where I needed to be. I was
already aware of the company, so I went to meet
with the owners of the business, a wonderful
friendly couple and we got off to a great start.
The first 3 months of working there was purely
learning about the varieties and blends of
teas and there really is so much to learn! The
opportunity to learn from them about the world
of tea and to help our clients find something that
they enjoy and may not be able to find elsewhere
is something that appealed to me, and that I am
still thankful for everyday.
Tea is much like the world of wine. Expert tea
sommeliers source tea leaves from around the
world and create blends of tea with a huge range
of flavours. There is definately something to suit
every palate and occasion. The taste and quality of
tea is determined by many factors and variables,
a few of these are …. The type of plant it is grown
from, climate, soil, the time of year the leaves are
picked and how it is treated after picking.
Most people are aware of Black tea and Green
tea. There are however many more types such
as White, Oolong, Pu-Ehr, Matcha, Rooibos,
Herbal and Fruit Infusions ( although the last 3
are not tea in the classic sense they make a tea
like beverage). I am passionate about all teas, and
can even appreciate ones the nuances of that I do
not particularly like myself. Let me tell you a little
about a few of my most favoured and ‘go to’ teas
and blends.
Be.one - 32 - Food
Japanese Cherry
Blossom
A beautiful blend of sencha green tea enriched with rose petals,
currants, candied pineapple cubes and cherry blossoms. This green tea
base is beneficial for health as the antioxidants and polyphenols mop up
free radicals and support your bodies abilities to detox itself. It has a fruity
floral flavour that is truly magnificent. All green teas taste best when made
with a lower temperature of water ( about 75 degrees ) this prevents them
from becoming bitter in taste.
Be.one - 34 - Food
Special Milky
Oolong
Oolong tea is somewhere between a black tea and a green tea, and this one
is unique in its taste. Despite the name there is actually no milk in it, and
although it smells soemthing like white chocolate it is named that because
it creates a pale milky liquour once brewed. The leaves start out rolled up
in tight balls and expand hugely when hot water is added The flavour is
delicate and sweet as well as refreshing. Oolong tea provides many health
benefits, is a metabolism booster and is packed full of very steadily released
caffeine, so is great if you need extra energy. The leaves can be brewed up
to 5 or 6 times and taste delicious every time. I love to start the day off with
this one and come back to it throughout the day.
RVE
Words By Naomie Thompson
How we inadvertently push love and
intimacy away and how to draw
it back to us again.
Once upon a time there is a little girl who just
wants her daddy to love her; and he does.
But not in the way she understands love.
She needs him to take an interest in her,
spend time with her, compliment her, hear
her, remember to pick her up and when her
birthday is. At the same time in another place
there’s a little boy, who wants to be a good
boy for mummy, he wants her appreciation,
her respect and trust but try as he might
to win her approval he feels criticised and
somewhere deep down he’s decided that when
she’s not happy it must be his fault, It must be
something he’s done wrong.
This little boy and girl grow up and each
go out looking for the one who’ll give them
what they feel they missed out on. Both with
the deeply held belief that they’re somehow
lacking, somehow bad inside, not quite good
enough and all they need to do is to meet
someone who will make them feel good and
whole. And at the same time both believing
that if anyone comes too close they will see
that they are indeed unlovable or not good
enough,
Then comes the strange dynamic, despite
the greatest efforts they both attract the type
of person who’s a reflection of how they feel
about themselves. They attract someone
who ultimately treats them the way they treat
themselves. Someone who is unable to meet
their true needs. No one is going to treat you
any better than you treat yourself.
But by changing your beliefs about yourself
on the inside you’ll totally change the vibe
you put out on the outside. You’ll then start
to attract the love and relationships that you
really want, that will really satisfy you.
These negative beliefs we have are like
a nasty voice shouting, “you’re not good
enough! you’re not lovable! etc” We believe
it, and we’re afraid that if anyone gets too
close they’ll realise that we’re exactly that,
not good enough, unlovable etc. This voice
comes from a belief we formed when we were
little and we can turn it around.
This nasty voice wants us to stay small and
safe and not reveal who we really are, but this
is the opposite of safe. Keeping hidden is not
safe. It becomes a habit and a habit can be
changed.
How this can show up in our relationships:
.You may stay with a person who repeatedly
cheats on you even when they’ve shown
themselves to be un trustworthy.
.The relationship keeps you both small and
your partner doesn’t support you to be the
best person you can be, to learn and grow, or
they don’t want to learn and grow with you. He
or she may be very critical and put you down.
.You’re in an abusive relationship, this could
be physical or emotional abuse. You may be
keeping details of your relationship secret
from family and friends out of shame.
.You may feel that you can’t be yourself in the
relationship. That you’re constantly changing
Be.one - 40 - Wellness
who you are to fit what you think your partner
wants you to be to gain their approval and
acceptance.
.As a woman you may find yourself being
overly critical and resentful of your partner.
.As a man you may find that you withdraw,
this may be physically, emotionally, sexually,
or that you zone out when she talks to you as
you get the nagging feeling that whatever you
do you can’t make her happy.
A person who feels great about who they are
is magnetic. Putting yourself first, making
yourself and your wellbeing a high priority
raises your value enormously, you’re setting
the example for how others need to treat you
if they want to be around you and in your life.
When you build yourself up and treat yourself
with the utmost care and respect you’ll get
that you’re worthy, special, deserving of great
things. Then you’ll automatically attract a
mate who’ll be able to treat you this way, and
you’ll naturally filter out those who are unable
to treat you in the way you now feel you
deserve.
The question for me is how can we be whole
and complete for ourselves? How can we
end this relentless search for someone to
complete us? Like we are somehow broken or
incomplete.
In these modern times of marrying for love we
choose a partner for our emotional security.
We give our partners the job description of
being our greatest lover, our best friend, our
trusted confidant, our intellectual equal, our
emotional support. There’s an endless list of
needs that we’re expecting someone to fulfil.
So when they choose us we believe that we
are all this to them. We are everything! We
are the chosen one! We are indispensable.
Our focus goes to our partner to meet our
emotional needs and we assume that we
must be the one to meet theirs.
When you meet your own needs, when you
really look hard at what you’re willing to
tolerate in a relationship and what is no
longer tolerable; a shift starts to happen in
what you accept and what you believe you
deserve.
When you start to ask yourself what you are
dissatisfied with in your partner and how can
you meet that need in yourself you gradually
become empowered to change your
experience of the relationship. For example
are you feeling neglected? I would ask you,
where are you neglecting yourself? What
can you do to treat yourself with the utmost
care? Instead of waiting for your partner to
do it. If your complaint is “he never listens
to me”, then I ask you, where in your life are
you not listening to yourself and your deep
needs?
This is about assuming full responsibility
for your emotional well-being. This is you
taking care of and accepting yourself. This
is self love.
This kind of self love and self acceptance
and taking full responsibility for ones
emotional needs clears the way for the
intimacy and connection that we all deeply
desire.
Interview. Kerrie Reeves
After becoming a vegan last year for many
reasons, I still sometimes feel uncomfortable
with announcing this in a social setting. I say
it and almost wait for the views of others to
ascend, I don’t see the same with people that
are vegetarian so why is it that people see
veganism as an extreme?
Be.one - 44 - Wellness
Many people that have become vegan have
done so after being educated about the animal
agriculture and feel quite strongly about it from
a compassionate point of view. Yet many of us
feel hushed to voice our opinions in fear of being
seen as an activist. So why is it that the “V” word
is so controversial? And seems to evoke strong
opinions and feelings in others. I speak to Rich
and Nick Stone, twins, that currently work in
the building trade and became vegan two years
ago. They say they would never change it for the
world, no matter how much people may take
the piss. Rich is currently studying nutritional
medicine and the two of them have plans to go
traveling for adventure and further study in plant
based nutrition, Ayurveda and yoga. Nick and
Rich generally finish each others sentences, so
these answers are combined points of view.
Can you tell me how your vegan journey started?
I suppose you could say I was having a bit of a low
point wondering what am I doing in my life at the
moment, then I was about to order 20 chicken
breasts, (we were going to the gym a lot at the
time and thought we needed the meat for the
protein) It really dawned on me and struck a cord
and I thought shit I’m going to be contributing to
all that death and I would be accountable for the
death of 10 chickens. It didn’t feel good. We then
went veggie for 6 months. We carried on eating a
lot of cheese and dairy, but the more we looked
into it we realised that this wasn’t ethical. Some
friends of ours went vegan and we were like wow
thats cool, imagine going the whole way, so we
did.
Can you explain how some people say becoming
vegan can help with health?
When you look at the human body and you look
at what foods are aligned with the body and what
foods have negative affects on the body you will
see how animal produce does not tally up with
what the human body is designed to consume.
We don’t deal well with dietary cholesterol and
eating meat is very heavy on the body. Whereas
with plant foods, our bodies are designed to
take in all of the antioxidants. There are so many
studies out there that have proved that illness
and diseases can be stopped and reversed from
living on a plant based diet.
Apart from health benefits and saving animals
,veganism can hugely help the environment.
Some people may even go as far as saying it
could save the planet. What are your thoughts on
this?
Yeah totally the foot print that animal agriculture
has on the planet is huge. The amazon rainforest
is being torn down to create space for crops to
grow food for agriculture but the rainforest is the
worlds lungs. The documentary Cowspiracy is
amazing to give all the environmental facts and
figures, we would really recommend that people
should watch it.
What was the hardest thing about becoming
vegan?
Giving up cheese.
And how did you get past that?
Manned up, seriously you just think of the
animals first.
How do people take it when you say that your
vegan?
More recently it feels more accepted but I think
that’s because we are a lot more confident. To
begin with people would take the piss they would
think that it was extreme and weird, but it helps
now that were more educated.
Many people seem to think that being vegan is
extreme but yet don’t question whether killing
animals is extreme, whats your view on this?
There’s a really cool Youtube video called the
Be.one - 46 - Wellness
extremism of veganism, by bite size vegan. I
believe it boils down to, that some people aren’t
truly educated on what goes on in the system of
producing animal products and they are blinded
by agriculture propagander.
You mentioned before when meeting someone
new you prefer to strike up a connection with
them before you tell them your vegan? Why is it
you feel you have to do this?
You mean before we drop the V bomb! Well we
never say, “Hi we’re Nick and Rich and we’re
vegan” The majority of people seem to think that
vegans are skinny and frail, tree hugging hippies
(ok a little of that might be true) I don’t think
we are always portrayed well in the media, so
I suppose our approach has been to build up a
good rapport through familiar ground and quite
often say that we have a plant based diet. We
never tend to say the vegan word as it seems to
have a negative connotation with it, not to every
one, but to many mainstream eaters.
It seems sad though, do you not think that by
acting the way we feel compelled to act, is also
stopping the way we should be proud of being
vegan. Sometimes it feels like we are tip toeing
around people?
The aim of the game is to educate people and
to all live in a happy world where the animals
and humans run around naked together haha! I
completely agree sometimes we do beat around
the bush, but each situation is completely
different, some people that eat meat are totally
cool and admire that we are vegan.
On the other hand some might say veganism has
become quite fashionable over the last couple
of years. What’s your take on this? Do you think
it could just be a fad or do you think people are
becoming more aware?
It does seem that it has become very fashionable,
but to what proportion I would be unaware,
because I don’t follow the media, we actually
came off social media around the time we
became vegan. I didn’t want to become part of
this trend. I believe some people genuinely wake
up to what is going on with animals, the planet
or health. Others might give it a try but then
accidentally eat a beef burger.
Do you get negative comments for being vegan,
and how do you deal with them?
We get a bit of harmless banter. Some days I deal
with it better than others. The bottom line is,
I know the real truth and why I’m doing it and
those people don’t. They haven’t actually sat
down and processed the reality of what is going
on. So I don’t really care if they think I’m an
extremest because I know the truth.
Sometimes people almost feel the need to excuse
themselfs for being vegan. I’ve often found my
self saying, “Sorry, I’m vegan,” when in actual
fact I’m not sorry at all. Do you ever find yourself
doing this and do you think we should excuse
ourselves?
Yes, I have and sometimes do, its a confidence
thing. We don’t need to excuse ourselves but
when living in a society where the majority in
this point and time aren’t vegan, it can be an
inconvenience when your invited out to eat. We
often offer to bring our own dish.
Do you think its important everyone is educated
about farming agriculture?
100% I think all people should be educated,
everyone should be aware.
If someone was thinking about becoming vegan
what would your advice be to them?
Do it! Educate yourself and do a comfortable
transition period.
DO
YOU
KNOW
YOUR
EGO?
Words By Emma Sparrow
Be.one - 51 - Wellness
It can bring you power, it can make you
miserable and it can cause you abundant
happiness. Since you were born it has been
evolving inside you and affecting every decision
you make. You think you’re in control? Think
again. Do you know your ego?
The word ego is thrown around a lot in
everyday conversations. To many of us the idea
of an ego is linked to a superiority complex - I
am better than / sexier than / smarter than /
quirkier than / more spiritual than …
Yoga and other cultures have taught for
thousands of years that understanding and
separating ourselves from the ego is our
path to enlightenment. At the opening and
ending ceremony of my yoga instructor
course we chanted and threw spices into a fire
symbolising the burning of our egos.
I clearly remember sitting
down afterwards totally
perplexed, what did burning
the ego even mean?
I started to think that I should throw out my
mascara, only wear boring clothes and ditch
everything that made me feel good about
myself. I asked my guru Mahesh after class
if he could explain what the ego was and he
very kindly spent our next philosophy class
talking about just that. He explained the ego as
comparing yourself against others.
The ego is a build-up of memories, beliefs and
opinions – we all have one. What matters is if
our ego is healthy or not.
An unhealthy ego is like a
parasite,
it lives within us affecting our behaviour and
ultimately our health and although we may
think we are under control it controls us.
Caroline McHugh (Author and motivational
speaker) describes two states of a fragile ego,
the superiority complex and the inferiority
complex. The inferiority complex is extremely
common, it is a lack of self-love and refusing
to accept ourselves as we are. A healthy
ego McHugh calls an ‘interiority complex’ - a
completely uncomparative state. Developing
this interiority complex she goes on to explain
is the art of being yourself. We are born
into a particular environment with a specific
biological blueprint. As young children we
are ego-less. We have a unique identity right
then and there which is everlasting, pure and
constant throughout our lives.
When yoga and other philosophy based
systems teach us to remove the ego it is to
remind ourselves that we are more than our
egos, and to try glimpse this childlike and
pure source. Has anyone seen those Natwest
adverts “we are what we do”? I hate them! Your
ego is what you do. Listen, this is important,
you are not the clothes you wear, you are not
Be.one - 52 - Wellness
your past, you are not defined by your thought
processes – all those things change over time.
You are everlasting, pure and constant. To find
yourself you need to scrape everything else
away,
your true joyful self lies
under the ego.
So where does the ego come from? As we grow
we develop opinions related to ourselves. “I
am good at writing, I have stumpy legs, I can
sing well, I am terrible at maths, I am awkward
in social situations… “. None of those opinions
would exist if we were the only human alive -
they are all comparative. Those opinions form
a unique mixture of superiority and inferiority
complexes as your ego. If you were born in
the wilderness with no contact with humanity
you would still have a sense of self, an ego,
but it would be an interiority complex – totally
uncomparitive and healthy.
So an unrealistically healthy ego is fully
accepting yourself without comparing yourself
to anybody else.
Once you can accept
yourself as you are you can
celebrate what makes you
different
and that is when you can be the awesome
version of yourself that you were designed to
be.
Realistically we all compare ourselves to others
in some ways. In the capitalistic word we live
in we need to make comparisons in order to
survive. However, we have many habits that are
unnecessary and through diligent practice we
can strip them away. Looking around the urban
environment so many of us live in, we can see
unhealthy ego traits everywhere. Selfie culture,
conversations all about talking and not about
listening, competitiveness in the workplace
and even the yoga studio! Not to mention the
epidemic lack of self-confidence sweeping the
world.
So let’s wrap this up. You are not only your
ego. Try and get to know your true self under
the ego – and often this means stripping the
ego away. You need an ego in the capitalist
world so try and make it a healthy one by
gradually changing your habitual superiority
and inferiority complexes. Then use your ego
to help you express your unique qualities and
achieve what you want to achieve. You are here
in this crazy beautiful world and you can do
great things – your ego can help you, don’t let it
hold you back.
JACK ROPER
The Universe doesn’t
Create Life, Life Creates
the Universe
Interview. Kerrie Reeves
“Spiritual development—and its relatives,
spirituality, religion, faith, and belief—
is one of the awkward issues in youth
development and a blind spot in the broader
field of human development. It focuses on
a dimension of life that is difficult to define
and contentious to talk about. People hold
strong opinions about what it is and why it
does or doesn’t matter. Some see it as offlimits,
a private matter for families—not the
stuff of public discussion or shared action.
Or, on the other hand, the devout can be
skeptical if the discussion is not grounded in
particular religious or cultural beliefs.”
(Dr. Eugene C. Roelkepartain)
Be.one - 54 - Wellness
Jack Roper is a young talented artist studying
film at the The Arts University Bournemouth. He
uses art to express his spiritual journey. When
Jack turned up to meet me with his floppy hair
and effortless style, I had a nostalgic feeling of
a crumpled grainy poster blue tacked on my
bedroom wall back in 1995. Jack didn’t know who
River Phoenix was, but my guess would be they
would have got along just fine, maybe like a Cara
to Kate. A film student with many talents, Jack
tells us about his inspiration behind his art work
sharing his conclusions on spirituality and how
by simply saying yes has brought him out from
hiding. Jack is just one of those people that is so
easy to believe in.
Tell me a little bit about your background and
what got you into your arts?
I guess my Dad, he’s an actor and my brother,
he works on films. So I guess the film stuff has
always been in the family. When I was younger
I was in a play with my Dad, I had an agent for
a while and did a few auditions, but nothing
really came of it. Then when I was 12 we moved
to Spain, I felt trapped in Spain, it was more
academically driven. It was when I came back
to the UK at 17 I started doing more acting and
enrolled on a filmmaking course. The art stuff
has always been in me. When I was in Spain I was
just watching a shit load of films, I guess I was
just filling my brain with potential concoctions
to make ideas happen. You watch a lot of films
and then you mash them all together in your
head and come up with good ideas I guess. I tried
drawing, I was kind of good at it but it would take
me about 10 hours to draw one portrait. I’ve also
been playing the guitar and trying to sing since
I was a teenager. I’m not that good, but my voice
is now listenable. It’s a lot of practice, trying out
new stuff on my guitar and trying out new stuff
with my voice. I’ve a couple of old friends from
Spain. We always send each other our songs, we
used to make music together so now whenever
we get together we just pick up where we left off
and start writing songs again. It’s really nice to
have feedback from people doing the same sort
of thing as you, and we’re always really honest
with each other.
My family are my harshest critics but recently
my brother sent me a video of Ed Sheran on the
Jonathan Ross show. He showed a song from
when he was 15 and he could not sing at all. It
made your ears bleed. So it gives me hope.
You mentioned to me that you feel you are on a
bit of a spiritual journey. How did this start for
you?
I believed in god as a kid then I became atheist,
then I decided there is something to it, there is
some sort of spiritual connection where we’re all
connected, theres not one saviour, or the great
being. We are just this one thing collectively.
I’m not sure what planted the seed. One day it
popped into my head that this is something I’ve
been thinking a lot about. When I moved in with
a housemate, who was really into spiritual things,
we discussed it a lot, some stuff I agreed with
some stuff I didn’t. But it made me do my own
research into it and I listened to talks by Allan
Whats and Terran McKenna. Learning about
Buddhism and spirituality in general made me
come to the conclusion that a lot of this stuff
was true and thats not coming from a faith stand
point I’m quite a logical thinker, so for me to
come to that conclusion makes me think anyone
can.
My housemate lent me a book called
Biocentrinism By Robert P. Lanza. He said I
Be.one - 56 - Wellness
think you will really dig this book. I took it on
the train home to Brighton, read it every night
and finished it on the train journey back. It really
just confirmed everything I theorised in my
head. How the universe doesn’t create life, life
creates the universe. So everything we see, we
see because we see it, if there isn’t an observer
then the universe wouldn’t exist. It’s like the old
proverb if a tree falls in a forest and no one’s
around to hear it does the tree make a sound?
and the answer actually is no, it doesn’t. Sound
waves go through the air and they are only
converted to sound when they hit our eardrums,
So there would be no sound if we weren’t around
to hear it. Its just really interesting to think
about.
So what would you class as some of your core
beliefs?
I believe if you have a positive outlook your life
becomes more positive. If you have a negative
outlook then your life becomes more negative,
It’s all in the way you view the world, so you
could be in the worst situations but as long as
you have a positive outlook it’s not going to affect
you, it’s not going to bring you down. When I
was growing up I thought right, if I’m a pessimist
and always expect the worst then I can never be
disappointed, and that was a horrible, horrible
way to look at the world, because it just meant
that I was always miserable and going through
the motions not really doing what I wanted and
thought, oh well bad shit happens and theres
no way to stop it. Now I look at the world in a
positive way. People want people to succeed and
want to help each other. Theres always going
to be some negative people but I choose not to
associate myself with them, When you change
your outlook and realise that you don’t need
some negative people in your life, you just start
to surround yourself with positive people. It’s not
even intentional it just happens. They are drawn
to you because of your energy I guess. I believe
in synchronicity and lots of little things sync up,
I get more work from it because I’m saying yes
to more things. I suppose I’m being myself more
rather than just hiding away. There’s always an
opportunity and depending on your outlook you
will decide whether to take that opportunity or
not.
You describe your art as a manifestation of your
journey, tell me more…..
It started out as I wanted a tattoo, I didn’t just
want some random piece of art, I wanted a
piece that means something to me. Im going
through this journey and I wanted something
that represented that and my new outlook on life,
I started thinking about how I could use shape
and form to represent that. I find it easier to
represent visually rather than verbally what I’m
going through on my journey. For instance on
this design (opposite page) you have the centre
which is empty which represents the ego then if
you branch out you’ve got an area which is the
people you surround yourself with, then you have
their egos, then outside of that you have got the
three circles which represent the expanse that
you you can delve into with consciousness, its
all connected. Another one of my designs was
inspired by my meditation practice, I started
realising that peace really did come from within
and I wanted to represent that, if you base your
whole sense of self from that than you will find
Be.one - 60 - Wellness
it, rather than looking for outside sources. As
well as happiness you can’t find it from outside it
all comes from within just like biocentrism, the
whole universe you see comes from within, If that
makes sense?
It does to me Jack :)
It’s difficult to sometimes get across what you
mean with words it’s such an abstract concept.
You’re studying film at the moment. Where do see
yourself progressing?
I decided really early on that I didn’t want to
spend 9-5 in an office punching in numbers,
I want to live an interesting life that I will be
happy living. As soon as I knew that I knew
film was the best bet for me as there’s so many
different areas to go into, It’s all about telling
stories. In life I’ve always been an observer, I
watch stories evolve in front of me and thats
what I find enjoyment in. Watching someone
tell a story based on something they might have
seen or experienced. All sorts of films have
some hint of truth in them. Even if it’s fully
fantasy there is still some hint of truth in it.
There was something that set this story teller in
motion to come up with this whole world, to tell
and share with people.
KELLY LEVELL
Moving Forward with
Sustainable and Ethical
Fashion
Interview. Kerrie Reeves
Images. Lucy Mooney
The concept of sustainable fashion is an
oxymoron in itsself. Given that fashion is
all about the new and latest trends, it’s no
wonder why people are confused by such a
contradiction. Fashion is the second largest
polluting industry on our planet. Many don’t
realise the impact that fashion has on the
world. Here we interview Kelly Levell, an
expert in ethical and sustainable fashion
who gives us her insights and a few tips
on what steps we can make to lessen our
fashion footprint.
Be.one - 62 - Style
“It is up to the next generation to be the change
that we want to see in the world.”
What is your opinion on how important
sustainability is in the fashion industry today?
I think ethical fashion has reached tipping point,
I was at London fashion week in February and
all of the window displays in Selfridges were
communicating ethical fashion. This is a clear
sign that the fashion industry is starting to take
sustainable fashion more seriously.
Do you think that the consumer is becoming
more aware of the fashion industry?
Yes, 76% of UK adults pay attention to ethical
credentials that brands are using today. The
attitudes of consumers are changing a lot. When
they are out shopping and if the choice of an
ethical item is there they will tend to choose
this option. This is where brand transparency
is important, for instance H&M now do a green
label, So they are offering the products for the
consumers albeit in a smaller way.
How have you seen the sustainable fashion
industry change/develop in the past five years?
It has changed by growth, I think there is an
array of fabulous brands that you can actually
go and buy from now, whereas 7 years ago when
I first started out on my journey with ethical
fashion and my lifestyle change, I’d made a
commitment to myself that I wasn’t going to buy
from the high street anymore, So I was looking
all the time and It was quite hard. Now I just
want to put all the brands in one place and tell
everyone where to find them.
Where do you see the sustainable fashion
industry heading in the future?
I think it will become the norm, it wont be a
separate niche thing. Everyones going to have to
be more transparent with there practices, their
employment, how they treat their employees
because consumers know the truth so they cant
hide any more.
I believe it is up to the next generation of
designers to clean up fashion. New designers
are taught about ethics and sustainability within
fashion yet there is still that influence of how
fashion is today. Do you believe that young
people currently have enough role models ?
It is up to the next generation to be the change
that we want to see in the world. They are getting
the education now about ethical practices
within businesses and the planet and ecology,
that wasn’t in the national curriculum when I
was at school. So they are growing up with the
awareness and they are going to be making that
change. The response we get from young people
is fantastic. I work with them through the Miss
Dorset competition to find positive role models
for young people. We put them through award
rounds which test them on their knowledge
of fair trade for instance, They also modelled
clothes from Peopletree on the catwalk which is a
certified fair trade brand.
What are your views on using animal products
within fashion, leather, fur and wool for
instance?
It doesn’t need to be done. There are other
things that we can use. There are technological
Be.one - 64 - Style
“fashion is the second largest polluting industry
on our planet, my dream would
be for that to change,”
advancements in fashion and industry, practices
to make things that are just as good. There are a
lot of fake furs out there now which people can’t
tell if they are real or not.
In your opinion what is the most important thing
to look for in ethical fashion?
It’s really hard for me to choose one thing, I
would just say do your best to buy ethical when
you can. Don’t beat yourself up about it but when
theres an ethical choice make it.
Some people think that ethical fashion can be too
expensive, how would you respond to this?
Quality products do come at a premium. Buy less
but better quality, this way you have clothing that
lasts and doesn’t misshape.
Could you name three ways of shopping more
ethically?
Shop Vintage, You can shop in charity shops for
clothes that are nearly new or sometimes they
are new and still have the tags on. Also check out
kilo event sales.
Buy less but better quality items from sustainable
brands such as Peopletree. Look for the labels
and logos, so there is the certified fair trade logo,
soil association logo for organic. Keep your eyes
peeled.
Start shopping in your wardrobe first because
you will probably rediscover things that you
didn’t realise you had. You will also have it fresh
in your mind what you already own so only look
for items that go with them, rather than buying
blind and impulse buying.
Are you the change that you want to see in the
world?
I believe that I am the change that I want to see
in the world and I believe that if everybody made
a pledge to themselves to make a change and be
the change then we will see the change - A more
sustainable future. No ones perfect but you’ve
just got to do your best.
Do you have a favourite quote?
“Theres no beauty in the finest clothes if they create
hunger and unhappiness”
(Gandhi)
“He who can no longer stand wrapped in ore is as
good as dead and his eyes are closed”
(Einstein)
To me this means slow down. No one has time
these days to take in the beauty that surrounds
us and take in the positive things out there.
What is your dream?
I have so many it’s hard to answer
The problem is that fashion is the second largest
polluting industry on our planet, my dream
would be for that to change, for ethical fashion
to become the norm, for people to live cleaner
lifestyles and for everyone in the world to benefit
from one another.
CLERKENWELL
VINTAGE
FAIR66
Be.one - 67 - Style
Vintage romance meets modern luxury as Clerkenwell
vintage fair arrives at its new home, the 5 star
Courthouse Hotel in Shoreditch, during
London Fashion Week.
After checking into The Court house Hotel
in Shoreditch and much to my delight
realising that we were there for the first
weekend of the Clerkenwell vintage
fashion fair, it would be rude not to give
up out Sunday afternoon plans to stroll
around the many colourful stalls.
Shopping Vintage is just one way to be
ethical in your purchasing choices. It
saves clothes from landfill and gives us
an ethical way of satisfying a desire for
new clothes without embracing fastfashion
culture, let alone the fact that
it’s completely nostalgic and you can get
amazing one off pieces that you are not
likely to see other people in. And don’t
be fooled that you have to look like a
50s throw back to wear vintage. Mix and
match new and vintage items to create a
unique look.
The Clerkenwell Vintage fashion fair
has been running since 2009, curated by
Savitri an award winning events organiser
with years of experience in the fashion,
film, advertising and music industry. For
2017 The fair has moved to The Court
House hotel in Shoreditch steeped in
Vintage glamour itself, the hotel used to
be, yes you guessed it - The Court House,
which was a regular meeting place for the
notorious Krays brothers. The super chic
bar with jail themed cocktails, still has
the cells in place were Reggie and Ronnie
where once locked up and now celebrated
in these stylish VIP booths.
Sure enough the queue started forming as
Be.one - 71 - Style
soon as the doors opened. Its great to see
what everyone was wearing, I’m not sure
that any one walked past me that hadn’t
made an effort. The stalls were filled
with garments ranging over many eras
and ranging through many prices. From
a pair of 1960s suede gloves for £8 to a
1920s silk gown for £1700. Accessories
and books are also on sale, I was quite
mesmerised by a collection of original
Biba posters.
Back in 2009 Vintage fairs were popping
up all over the place, but this one is
definately here to stay. You can tell that
stall holders are carefully selected just
as the venue is, which makes the event a
truly glamorous experience.
Clerkenwell vintage fair is running
monthly at The court house, shoreditch
during 2017.
JAMII PRINCE
Yoga Adventures
Interview. Kerrie Reeves
Images. Kerrie Reeves
After a skate boarding accident 7 years
ago Jamii had to cut down on her dance
teaching career but was not willing to give
up, she knew she needed to keep her body
strong and took up yoga. A Mum, a DJ, and
dance teacher with a multitude of hobbies
and interests. She is certainly a doer. Jamii
always had a dream to go to India for her
30th birthday, she didn’t know how she was
going to do it but knew one way or another it
would happen. She has recently completed
her yoga training in Rishikesh, India. It’s
early days for Jamii but she is one of the
most determined women I have ever met.
Here we talk about her eventful and very
honest account of India.
Be.one - 74 - Style
I understand that your trip to India was quite
eventful and didn’t go quite as you had foreseen,
How did your journey begin?
Once I got off the plain, I was meant to be getting
a coach from the airport to Rishikesh, which is
an 8 hour journey, to be told that there was no
coach, so I tried to pay for a taxi. I had to get
my bank card out of my suitcase but in doing
so I then locked my bank card in my suitcase
with my keys. I left the airport to get some air,
only to realise they wouldn’t let me back in to
the airport. I needed the toilet, had no money,
my food was locked in my suitcase. I felt lost in
the middle of India. Eventually I managed to get
some internet reception, called the hotel, which
they then contacted a driver to come and pick
me up. I then had a 8 hour journey bursting for
the toilet.
What were your first thoughts when arriving in
India, was it what you expected?
No, I thought it would be westernised and
cleaner, but it was just absolute chaos and
mayhem. Everybody beeping their horn, dust
and dirt everywhere, kids on the street running
around naked, animals pulling carts that were
way too big for them. I actually couldn’t believe
how disorganised and how much poverty there
was. On the 8 hour trip every few minutes you
would see a massive pile of rubbish and there
were dogs dying on the side of the road; really,
really skinny.
What would you say was the first challenge when
you got to the yoga school?
I had booked on to do my ashtanga teacher
Be.one - 76 - Adventure
training course and when I got there I was
dropped in the middle of a more intense teaching
course, which meant I had to study a lot, practice
a lot to catch-up with everybody else. The group
had already bonded and I was the new one.
Do you feel your training challenged you
mentally?
I had to really focus on the education side
of it because I’m not very good at retaining
information, so I found that the physical
challenge wasn’t so hard. I was learning, training
then catching up. It was non-stop continuously
for 2 weeks.
Did you have any moments of realisation, aha
moments as I refer to them?
I did a day of silence, I normally talk a lot, I think
thats more of a nervous thing, but the silence
gave me a chance to recognise that I really enjoy
being in peace and when people don’t have an
expectation of me to talk I didn’t feel the need
to talk and I learnt a lot about myself in those 24
hours. I’ve always been a talker not a listener and
now I understand the importance of listening.
Did you take a book?
Yeah I did, I read a book called living with The
Himalayan Masters and on the way home I
bought a book on ayurvedic diet which I found
massively interesting and I want to go on and
learn more about that now.
“Yoga is a way of life, it’s not just the postures,
the postures are one limb of the
eight limbs of yoga.”
Do you feel yoga is a way of life or a way to
exercise and meditate?
Yoga is a way of life, it’s not just the postures, the
postures are one limb of the eight limbs of yoga.
The eight limbs cover your breathing, your way of
eating, your way of treating yourself and others.
The postures themselves are to prepare the body
for long periods of seated meditation.
How’s it going now at home?
The yoga classes are going brilliantly, I’m
getting fully booked quite easily. I am practicing
regularly, but not as often as I’d like to and I
haven’t had any time to study since I’ve been
back. I will never stop learning. I want to do
another course already to keep evolving my
knowledge.
If there are other people out there that have the
dream of becoming a yoga teacher what would
your advice be?
Do plenty of yoga practice before you go and do
your teaching course so you’re physically ready
for it. Always be open to whatever your teacher
wants to teach you and always remember that
you never stop learning.
Was your journey home any better?
Well thats another adventure, which included
scary mopeds and busses, but I made it home
alive and well.
Golden milk
2 week supply
100grams Ceylon cinnamon
100grams turmeric
1 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons of coconut oil
In a pan, put the turmeric, cinnamon, the ground black pepper and half pint of water (for now).
Bubble it all over a low heat stirring occasionally for about 15 mins
until it forms a gloopy paste, you may need to add more water to get that consistency. Let the paste
start to cool and then stir in the coconut oil.
Once cooled pop into a jam jar/ kilner jar etc, pop in the fridge and it will set. I use a large teaspoon
every night in warm koko milk and the same every morning or mix in porridge for breakfast.
Sweet TomatoTostada
serves 1
1 soft tortilla wrap
140g Fresh sundried tomatoes diced.
¼ red onion diced
1 avocado
Juice of ½ lemon
Small bunch of mint and coriander chopped
Salt and pepper
Vegan sour cream and violife cheese (optional)
Fresh diced chilli
Handful of watercress
Cress and grated carrot
In a bowl mix the onion, tomatoes, mint and coriander.
Get the avocado and mash until desired consistency, add the lemon juice and salt and pepper and
mix.
Pop the tortilla into a hot oven for 5 minutes to slightly warm
Once out, grate the violiofe cheese onto it then sprinkle the tomato and onion mix all over leaving a
space in the middle for the avocado.
I like to add my avocado mix to the middle, sprinkle the cress and carrot on top and also sprinkle
fresh chilli and then a few drops of the sour cream.
You can either fold in half or eat open like a pizza with the watercress on the side.
Sweet potato and Quinoa
curry
serves 4/6 as a side dish or 2 as a main
300 grams of Quinoa (rinsed)
600ml water
1 veg stock pot
1 red onion diced
2 sweet potatoes diced
250g petit pois
2 teaspoons of Garam masala
2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons of madras curry powder
2 teaspoons of cumin
2 tins chopped tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon garlic granules
Bunch fresh coriander
Sprig of mint
Alpro soya yoghurt (plain)
¼ cucumber grated
Dice the sweet potato and season with garlic granules, cumin and cayenne. Roast for 15 minutes until
soft.
In a pan fry the onions until slightly soft, add the quinoa, the veg stock pot, the water, all the spices,
petit pois and the tinned tomatoes. Gently bubble away on a low heat stirring frequently as may need
a touch more water depending on the cooking speed of the quinoa. It takes about 20 minutes for the
quinoa to become light and fluffy but may need slightly longer. Mix in the cooked sweet potato, salt
and pepper to season. Sprinkle the coriander on top of the curry to taste.
Mix the grated cucumber, yoghurt and chopped mint into a bowl for the cucumbereita and serve on
the side.
Tofu Courgetti
serves 2
3 courgettes
300 grams Cherry tomatoes
Fresh coriander
1 fresh chilli
Cayenne pepper
Juice of 1 lemon
150grams firm Tofu (not silken)
Oil of choice for frying (I use coconut oil)
With your choice of spiralizer, make the courgetti. (I use a julienne peeler as it makes the courgettes a
lot thinner and more like spaghetti)
Set aside and start to prepare your tofu into small cubes (about 2cm squared)
In a pot add your cherry tomatoes (whole) sliced fresh chilli, a splash of water, your lemon juice and a
sprinkle of cayenne pepper (to your preference for heat) pop the lid on and fry on a low heat stirring
occasionally.
Once the tomatoes have softened nicely and the mix has become slightly saucy add your courgetti.
Pop the lid back on and keeping on low heat gently simmer for 5 minutes.
While it’s cooking get a stir fry pan with some hot coconut oil and stir fry the tofu on a fast heat with a
dash of cayenne for flavour frying for 5 minutes also stirring occasionally.
Once cooked add the courgetti to a bowl, toss the tofu on top and the fresh coriander and serve.
