Rabbi’s Message
Rabbi Gila Ruskin
In preparation for the opening Sisterhood breakfast on Sept. 17 on the topic of and Jewish
Parenting and Grandparenting in honor of the opening of Religious School on September 10,
here is some wisdom from myjewishlearning.com.
Match the Treatment to the Individual Child
Possibly the most important educational principle for a Jewish parent to adhere to is the
notion of bringing up each child according to his or her unique personality, character
traits and talents (Proverbs 22:6).
To demonstrate this, Samson Raphael Hirsch (in his commentary to Genesis 25:27) asks
a simple but difficult question. We can understand why one of Abraham’s children,
Ishmael, went off the proper path, since although he had Abraham for a father, his genes
and environment were somewhat tainted by having the maidservant Hagar for a mother.
However, how is it possible to understand why one of Isaac’s sons, Esau, went off the
proper path? After all, both parents, Rebecca and Isaac, were righteous, and the home
environment was a proper Jewish one?
Hirsch answers that a clue is provided by the verse (Genesis 25:27) that says that the
brothers Esau and Jacob grew up, and only then it indicates that Esau was a hunter
while Jacob dwelt in the tent (of study [according to a rabbinic story]). It is clear,
according to Hirsch, based on this verse, that both Esau and Jacob, born as twins, were
raised in precisely the same environment and with the same methodology.
Rebecca and Isaac raised both of their children identically, and that was their mistake.
They did not take into account that Esau possessed a different personality from Jacob
and needed his own special environment in order to be raised to become a righteous
human being. Esau rebelled against this upbringing, which did not suit his personality
and temperament and turned to the evil path. Had Isaac and Rebecca realized Esau’s
unique personality traits early on, they could have raised him differently and he could
also have become righteous like Jacob.
MELTON CLASSES BEGIN THIS MONTH
Our intrepid adult learners enter their fourth year of study on September 28. This is the
final year of the Melton Survey courses, and the graduates will receive a certificate for
their 100 hours of participation in this renowned international program. On 13 Thursday
evenings, we will gather in the social hall to learn about Crossroads of Jewish History
and Ethics of Jewish Life, plus some camaraderie and nosh. Contact Rabbi Gila if you
are interested in joining us for our next cycle beginning in 2018.
I look forward to greeting you at our holiday celebrations and educational programs this
fall.
Shalom, Rabbi Gila Ruskin
Co-President’s Message
Linda Needel & Wendy Drabinski
September is here! We hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. Things
around the synagogue are hustle and bustle as we prepare for the High
Holidays. Religious School will be starting, and we will see how tall our
children grew this summer!
With plans in the making, we are looking for ideas from YOU, our
congregation, surrounding programming, services and anything else
pertinent to our synagogue. What is of interest to you? What programs
would you like to see? What can we do to engage you and your children?
What kind of social action projects are you interested in? What adult
education subjects would you like to learn about? We are here for you
and need feedback. Something of interest to you may also be of interest
to another congregant. Together we can all move to make our community
more vibrant.
We will begin construction on our new addition soon. Consider
becoming involved and offering suggestions or assistance.
The more you get involved in our community, the more you’ll get out of
your Temple membership. We’re working hard for you, but we need you
to tell us what would make you want to come to temple. We really want
to know. We’re here for you.
Linda and Wendy
Tyler Cameron Paris
Tyler is a 7 th grade student at
Southampton Middle School. He
began his education at Adas Shalom
in Ms. Judy’s outstanding preschool and has been doing well in school ever
since. Thank you, Ms. Judy, for providing Tyler with such a strong
foundation.
Likewise, Tyler also began his Jewish Education at Adas Shalom. He was
only 4 years old when he decided that he wanted to attend Sunday School
instead of just dropping off his older brother, Andrew, every Sunday. Randi
Chancey was kind enough to welcome Tyler into her Kindergarten Class
even though he was only 4 years old. Tyler was thrilled and remained in
her class for 3 years until he became old enough to move into First Grade!
Thank you, Morah Randi, for welcoming Tyler into your class and for your
kindness and nurturing.
In addition to achieving an excellent academic record, Tyler has been
playing soccer since he was 4 years old. Over the past several years, he has
been playing Striker position for AFC, a Travel Soccer Team. His coaches,
teammates and parents can often be heard cheering his name as he dribbles
the ball down the field toward the goal to score! Thank you to his Coaches,
Chuck Osborne and Mark Moxley, for their time, expertise and dedication
in helping Tyler develop his soccer skills and learn determination and
perseverance (in every kind of weather)!
Tyler also enjoys vacations in Mexico where he has fun ziplining and cliff
jumping. He loves playing with his dog, Reef, and spending time with
friends and family.
For the community service portion of his Tri-Mitzva-Lon project, Tyler
baked dog biscuits for the Humane Society of Harford County. This service
reflects the Jewish value of “Tzar Ba’alei Chayim” or non-cruelty to animals.
As his service to the Temple, Tyler, along with his friend Addison Sweat,
baked 200 brownies for the event titled, “Love your Neighbor: Learn to
Live Together Inspired by the Legacy of Martin Luther King.” This event
was a very joyous and meaningful time as Muslims, Christians and Jews all
joined together to sing special songs and to discuss what helps to foster
peace. In addition, Tyler helped during The Purim Carnival. He operated
the large wooden games that Dr. David Rosenblatt built, and assisted with
taking them apart after.
For the third part of his Tri-Mitzvah-Lon, Tyler chose to twin with his
grandmother, Ann Ungar, so that she could become a Bat Mitzvah. Ann is
so very excited and grateful for this awesome opportunity to have a belated
Bat Mitzvah. Most of all she is deeply appreciative for being able to share
the day with her amazing grandson Tyler, and her wonderful family.
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Rabbi Gila for her spiritual
guidance; to Dr. Paul and Jonah Lever for their guidance in creating The
Torah Karaoke Presentation; to Linda Needel for her expert tutoring and
support in helping Tyler learn his Torah Portion: Ki Tavo; to Jonah Lever
for being Tyler’s Teen Mentor and helping him learn the songs and prayers
to lead the Friday Shabbat Service; to our principal, Jennifer Bober, for her
dedication to the curriculum; to all the teachers and assistants for
providing excellent Jewish education classes; to Mike Mullis for his
outstanding piano accompaniment and to everyone in the choir for their
beautiful singing.
Congratulations Tyler! We are so proud of you!
Religious School News
Jennifer Bober & Cheryl Conley
The school year is about to begin and we are excited to see everyone back
for a year of learning and fun. Please plan to spend the morning with us
on Sunday, September 10. Following the opening assembly students will
go to their classrooms and parents will gather in the social hall for
breakfast provided by the Sisterhood. Thank you to the ladies of the
Sisterhood – we appreciate your continued support.
This year we have a few new teachers in our classrooms. I’d like to
welcome Jenn Cohen and Jason Allen to the second grade, Jenn Finkel to
the fifth grade midweek classroom and Barbara Litofsky to the sixth
grade. Thank you all for saying “yes” to teaching our students – they are a
great group of kids. If anyone else would like to help in the religious
school, please let us know.
This year we have 70 students enrolled in our school. If you know of any
Jewish families who are not yet members, please encourage them to join
our congregation and enroll their children in our school. We need your
help to make our congregation grow.
Our calendar for the 5778 school year is filled for the year; please join us
for assemblies, beit café breakfasts and grade level services throughout
the year.
B’Shalom – Cheryl & Jenn
Nominating Committee
Charna Kinneberg
We are once again going to start the process of looking for board
members.
We have openings on the Nominating Committee for two synagogue
members who are not board members. This requires one meeting -- you
get a free dinner out of this! The nominating committee is responsible for
filling board openings. The committee will meet sometime in September
over dinner. If you are able to spend a few hours to help fill board
positions, please contact Charna Kinneberg at (410) 569-2741 or via
email at mdseniortransitions@gmail.com.
We have several openings on the board:

Treasuer
Vice-President of Membership
Trustee - Caring Committee
Trustee - Adult Education
Trustee - Social and Fund Raising
Trustee – Emeritus
All have a two-year term except the vice-president, which has a threeyear
term.
The positions start in June 2018. We have a six-month period for elected
board members to familiarize themselves with their positions so the
hand-off is smooth. This is a great opportunity to become involved. If
you are interested or know someone who would be good in any of these
positions, please contact Charna Kinneberg at (410) 569-2741 or via
