AREA GUIDE Canary Wharf In 1991 the first businesses moved into Canary Wharf, it has since become one of the world’s premier business and shopping districts; home to the European and World headquarters of numerous major technology companies, financial services, media organisations and professional services firms. Over 100,000 people now work here and the estate stretches over 97 acres and boasts approximately 16 million sq.ft. of office and retail space. Canary Wharf is located in West India Dock which once formed part of the busiest ports in the world. After the docks were closed in 1980 a programme of redevelopment ensued and the area took shape as a business and shopping district. Over 100.000 people now work here Interestingly the name Canary Wharf derived from when the quay was in use as a dock and the largest portion of cargo came from the Canary Islands.
