MASTER PLANNING<br />
<strong>Parks</strong> play a vital role in a city’s livability, identity, and<br />
economic sustainability. Community leaders understand<br />
the positive impacts of providing a park system with a<br />
creative balance of parks, destination facilities, and<br />
recreation programs. Therefore, the role of public<br />
parks and open spaces are equally as important as<br />
other infrastructure priorities such as roads, utilities, and<br />
drainage corridors. A great park system not only benefits<br />
residents’ physical and mental well-being, but it also<br />
preserves the cultural heritage and natural resources of<br />
the community.<br />

Our park planners consider Master Plans to be strategic<br />
roadmaps that guide civic leaders and city staff to the<br />
realization of successful parks and park systems.<br />

LITTLE ELM PARKS, RECREATION,<br />
AND OPEN SPACE MASTER PLAN<br />
Little Elm, Texas<br />
With its beautiful setting around Lake<br />
Lewisville, The Town of Little Elm<br />
engaged <strong>Dunaway</strong> to create a visionary<br />
<strong>Parks</strong>, Recreation, and Open Space Master<br />
Plan. A key goal was to fulfill the Town’s vision<br />
to be “a distinct and desirable lakeside<br />
destination for all people to live and play.”<br />
With 66 miles of shoreline, Little Elm has<br />
tremendous potential to partner with the<br />
Corps of Engineers on expanding water<br />
activities and outdoor recreation venues. The<br />
planning team envisioned the Master Plan<br />
by engaging town leaders and enthusiastic<br />
citizens through focus groups, visioning<br />
sessions, and Town Hall meetings.<br />

FLAG POLE HILL MASTER PLAN<br />
Dallas, Texas<br />
At the northern reaches of White Rock Lake<br />
Park, Flag Pole Hill has been a popular<br />
destination in the Dallas park system for over a<br />
century. With a recent surge of neighborhood<br />
interest in improving amenities at the park,<br />
the City of Dallas commissioned <strong>Dunaway</strong> to<br />
develop a master plan that would establish<br />
a sensitive approach for park development<br />
over the coming years. The <strong>Dunaway</strong> team is<br />
producing an analysis of current conditions,<br />
a community-based list of program elements,<br />
conceptual alternatives, and a final master plan.<br />

space enjoyment, civic gatherings, and places<br />
for families and neighbors to come together.<br />
<strong>Dunaway</strong> designers realize that these high-use<br />
parks often become the ‘heart’ of a community<br />
– a place for everyone. Our park design team<br />
thrives in collaborating with local citizens, sports<br />
groups, and City leaders to creatively bring their<br />
vision of a major facility to reality.<br />

SOCCER COMPLEX<br />
Denton, Texas<br />
Designed to become the<br />
City of Denton’s premier<br />
soccer and field sports facility,<br />
the G. Roland Vela Soccer<br />
Complex will provide a high<br />
quality experience for players<br />
and spectators alike. Created<br />
to provide four adult soccer/<br />
rugby fields, a centrally located<br />
restroom/concession building,<br />
a children’s play area, a variety<br />
of pavilions, and ample parking,<br />
the facility will allow for flexible<br />
programs from league play to<br />
high profile tournaments.<br />

TRAILS and<br />
NATURE-BASED<br />
With an increasing number of people<br />
making their homes in urban areas, the<br />
demand for nature-based parks and trails<br />
has soared. This includes large preserves<br />
that encompass hundreds of acres, as well<br />
as linear parks and trails that help connect<br />
neighborhoods and promote non-motorized<br />
mobility throughout a community. No matter<br />
the size, these types of recreation facilities<br />
provide a welcome escape to those seeking to<br />
be refreshed and rejuvenated by the outdoors.<br />

JOHN F. BURKE NATURE PRESERVE<br />
Farmers Branch, Texas<br />
In an effort to balance protection of the City’s<br />
largest remaining natural resource, Farmers<br />
Branch engaged <strong>Dunaway</strong> to prepare a master<br />
plan for their 104-acre nature preserve. Located<br />
at the crossroads of three major freeways and<br />
perched along the Trinity River, the John F. Burke<br />
Nature Preserve is a diverse community of wildlife<br />
and vegetation that encompasses riparian<br />
forests, meadows and wetlands. This multi-faceted<br />
site offers a range of educational experiences,<br />
as well as an “escape” into the rugged river<br />
corridor. The Master Plan carefully considered<br />
new improvements including an amphitheater<br />
classroom, wetland boardwalks, a gateway<br />
pedestrian bridge, river overlooks, wildlife blinds,<br />
and a hierarchy of hard and soft surface trails.<br />

HARRIS ROAD NEIGHBORHOOD PARK<br />
Arlington, Texas<br />
At <strong>Dunaway</strong>, we believe in the importance of<br />
neighborhood parks providing great resources<br />
for recreational enjoyment as well as providing a<br />
distinct image for the surrounding community. Many<br />
times, the neighborhood park theme may take its<br />
design cues from the physical and social fabric of<br />
the adjacent neighborhood. When this happens,<br />
these parks not only become year-round centers<br />
for civic vitality and family activities, they provide a<br />
distinct sense of place unique and relatable to those<br />
neighborhoods.<br />
Although relatively small in scale, neighborhood parks<br />
play large roles in creating community. Neighborhood<br />
parks are often some of the most loved and valued<br />
places in a community. The playgrounds, trails,<br />
pavilions, and other amenities that people use on a<br />
daily basis are places where childhood memories are<br />
made... where friendships grow... and where families<br />
are brought closer together.<br />

communities. Today’s successful aquatic<br />
facilities need to accommodate a wide range<br />
of users and provide a stimulating experience<br />
that competes with other leisure activities.<br />
We are familiar with navigating the unique<br />
challenges and opportunities associated with<br />
contemporary aquatics projects. Our aquatic<br />
specialists utilize a collaborative approach<br />
beginning with visioning, then implementing<br />
creative design solutions so that each project<br />
provides a unique aquatic experience that will<br />
provide great fun for generations.<br />

CHISHOLM AQUATIC CENTER<br />
Hurst, Texas<br />
The recently redeveloped Chisholm Aquatic Center<br />
has become an exciting signature destination for all<br />
the residents of Hurst. The waterpark was designed to<br />
maximize play value for children, teens and families,<br />
while preserving the surrounding natural features. Vistas<br />
across the four curving play pools are punctuated<br />
with bright yellow, blue, and orange play features. The<br />
<strong>Dunaway</strong> aquatic specialists worked closely with the<br />
City to employ design creativity and sound practice<br />
while retaining key existing infrastructure and natural<br />
amenities. This new facility balances an atmosphere<br />
of enticing water based activities with a relaxed park<br />
environment, creating a truly unique experience.<br />
