MASTER PLANNING
Parks play a vital role in a city’s livability, identity, and
economic sustainability. Community leaders understand
the positive impacts of providing a park system with a
creative balance of parks, destination facilities, and
recreation programs. Therefore, the role of public
parks and open spaces are equally as important as
other infrastructure priorities such as roads, utilities, and
drainage corridors. A great park system not only benefits
residents’ physical and mental well-being, but it also
preserves the cultural heritage and natural resources of
the community.
DUNCANVILLE PARK MASTER PLAN
Duncanville, Texas
Our park planners consider Master Plans to be strategic
roadmaps that guide civic leaders and city staff to the
realization of successful parks and park systems.
LITTLE ELM PARKS, RECREATION,
AND OPEN SPACE MASTER PLAN
Little Elm, Texas
With its beautiful setting around Lake
Lewisville, The Town of Little Elm
engaged Dunaway to create a visionary
Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master
Plan. A key goal was to fulfill the Town’s vision
to be “a distinct and desirable lakeside
destination for all people to live and play.”
With 66 miles of shoreline, Little Elm has
tremendous potential to partner with the
Corps of Engineers on expanding water
activities and outdoor recreation venues. The
planning team envisioned the Master Plan
by engaging town leaders and enthusiastic
citizens through focus groups, visioning
sessions, and Town Hall meetings.
FLAG POLE HILL MASTER PLAN
Dallas, Texas
At the northern reaches of White Rock Lake
Park, Flag Pole Hill has been a popular
destination in the Dallas park system for over a
century. With a recent surge of neighborhood
interest in improving amenities at the park,
the City of Dallas commissioned Dunaway to
develop a master plan that would establish
a sensitive approach for park development
over the coming years. The Dunaway team is
producing an analysis of current conditions,
a community-based list of program elements,
conceptual alternatives, and a final master plan.
SEXTON PARK
Prosper, Texas
COMMUNITY PARKS and
ATHLETIC FACILITIES
Community Parks and Athletic Facilities provide
for a wide variety of recreational activities
including competitive sports, passive open
space enjoyment, civic gatherings, and places
for families and neighbors to come together.
Dunaway designers realize that these high-use
parks often become the ‘heart’ of a community
– a place for everyone. Our park design team
thrives in collaborating with local citizens, sports
groups, and City leaders to creatively bring their
vision of a major facility to reality.
G. ROLAND VELA
SOCCER COMPLEX
Denton, Texas
Designed to become the
City of Denton’s premier
soccer and field sports facility,
the G. Roland Vela Soccer
Complex will provide a high
quality experience for players
and spectators alike. Created
to provide four adult soccer/
rugby fields, a centrally located
restroom/concession building,
a children’s play area, a variety
of pavilions, and ample parking,
the facility will allow for flexible
programs from league play to
high profile tournaments.
TRAILS and
NATURE-BASED
With an increasing number of people
making their homes in urban areas, the
demand for nature-based parks and trails
has soared. This includes large preserves
that encompass hundreds of acres, as well
as linear parks and trails that help connect
neighborhoods and promote non-motorized
mobility throughout a community. No matter
the size, these types of recreation facilities
provide a welcome escape to those seeking to
be refreshed and rejuvenated by the outdoors.
JOHN F. BURKE NATURE PRESERVE
Farmers Branch, Texas
In an effort to balance protection of the City’s
largest remaining natural resource, Farmers
Branch engaged Dunaway to prepare a master
plan for their 104-acre nature preserve. Located
at the crossroads of three major freeways and
perched along the Trinity River, the John F. Burke
Nature Preserve is a diverse community of wildlife
and vegetation that encompasses riparian
forests, meadows and wetlands. This multi-faceted
site offers a range of educational experiences,
as well as an “escape” into the rugged river
corridor. The Master Plan carefully considered
new improvements including an amphitheater
classroom, wetland boardwalks, a gateway
pedestrian bridge, river overlooks, wildlife blinds,
and a hierarchy of hard and soft surface trails.
NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS
HARRIS ROAD NEIGHBORHOOD PARK
Arlington, Texas
At Dunaway, we believe in the importance of
neighborhood parks providing great resources
for recreational enjoyment as well as providing a
distinct image for the surrounding community. Many
times, the neighborhood park theme may take its
design cues from the physical and social fabric of
the adjacent neighborhood. When this happens,
these parks not only become year-round centers
for civic vitality and family activities, they provide a
distinct sense of place unique and relatable to those
neighborhoods.
Although relatively small in scale, neighborhood parks
play large roles in creating community. Neighborhood
parks are often some of the most loved and valued
places in a community. The playgrounds, trails,
pavilions, and other amenities that people use on a
daily basis are places where childhood memories are
made... where friendships grow... and where families
are brought closer together.
AQUATICS
SAFARI SPLASH
Fort Worth Zoo
Whether it’s a small sprayground in a
neighborhood park or a large family
aquatic center, at Dunaway, we recognize
the big impact these facilities have on their
communities. Today’s successful aquatic
facilities need to accommodate a wide range
of users and provide a stimulating experience
that competes with other leisure activities.
We are familiar with navigating the unique
challenges and opportunities associated with
contemporary aquatics projects. Our aquatic
specialists utilize a collaborative approach
beginning with visioning, then implementing
creative design solutions so that each project
provides a unique aquatic experience that will
provide great fun for generations.
CHISHOLM AQUATIC CENTER
Hurst, Texas
The recently redeveloped Chisholm Aquatic Center
has become an exciting signature destination for all
the residents of Hurst. The waterpark was designed to
maximize play value for children, teens and families,
while preserving the surrounding natural features. Vistas
across the four curving play pools are punctuated
with bright yellow, blue, and orange play features. The
Dunaway aquatic specialists worked closely with the
City to employ design creativity and sound practice
while retaining key existing infrastructure and natural
amenities. This new facility balances an atmosphere
of enticing water based activities with a relaxed park
environment, creating a truly unique experience.
