THE WIDOWS RIGHT
DEFENDER
GIVING BACK
WHEN DID YOU CONCEIVE THE IDEA OF AN NGO?
The NGO was conceived since when I was 13. My father
died when I was 6 and my mother was left alone to cater
for 5 of us and my father’s people where not ready to
help. We held our hands together with our mom and
walked and worked through it all. It was an experience I
am still going to bring to your screen. It was in the heat of
it all that I made up my mind as young as I was then 13
that I was going to spend my adult age making sure
widows and their children around me don’t suffer. It was a
massive life experience and I love my mom so much
because like I will always say “My mother was my Father”.
She is the Wonder woman I know.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST CHALLENGE FACED
BY YOUR NGO?
I will say economic challenges and societal beliefs.
The economic situation in the country does not give
both government and private persons the buoyancy to
think of charity of any kind.
There are some sociological cultural beliefs that
discourage people from engaging in charity either as a
donor or Beneficiary. This am sure will come to you as a
surprise but we have had such situations where a widow
refused our assistance because she claims it is a cultural
thing and she must do it. And I am talking about a
widow being forced to bear children for her late
husband’s brother or be stripped off all her children’s
inheritance.
