Will my personal auto policy
provide coverage if I use my
vehicle for business? The answer is
yes and no – depending on the business. All companies
allow for business use of a personal vehicle when your
occupation is, for example, realtor, doctor, sales rep, etc.
That just means that you use your personal vehicle to be
“out and about” during the workday.
Some companies allow some artisan use on a pickup or van. They
often restrict how many jobsites per day and what equipment is being
hauled.
If any of you have become Uber or Lyft drivers, there are a couple of
companies that let you have a personal auto policy (not commercial) and
add on an endorsement for that usage. For the rest of the business use,
you may need to purchase a commercial auto policy. And if you use your
vehicle for delivery of any kind, it will always have to be a commercial
policy.
What deductible should I choose on my home? I believe you
should be encouraged to have the highest deductible you can afford in
the event of a loss. The first reason for this is for premium savings for you.
The higher the deductible, the lower the premium.
The second reason is a bit more critical. If you have a number of
home claims, you can lose your insurance and there are no standard or
preferred companies that will write your home until the losses are over
3-5 years old. If you maintain a higher deductible, you would be less
tempted to put in a small, insignificant claim.
I still remember a lady calling us who had just been canceled by a
large reputable company for claims. She had 3 claims, none of which
exceeded $600. Her premium had been in the neighborhood of $700 and
our quote was over $2,000.
Insurance companies know that frequency of claims is as bad or worse
than severity of claims. Three theft claims will get you canceled, but a
lightning strike that destroys your home will not.
