The Chairman's Notes
Today we welcome to The Paycare Ground the
players, officials and supporters of Wem Town.
They have made a decent start to the season
and have an excellent 4-0 win against then
League Leaders Team Dudley to their credit so
we know another tough game is in store today.
Win lose or draw the players and officials will be
made welcome to join us for our award winning
post match hospitality.
I missed last Saturday’s excellent Birmingham County FA Vase win
against AEI Rugby as I was away at my youngest daughter’s wedding.
The feedback from last Saturday has been brilliant. Our visitors were
extremely complimentary about our facilities and hospitality and of course
we welcomed some of the players and management from the 1990/91
and 1991/92 Vase winning teams as our VIP guests. It was wonderful
that so many players turned up and some of them have contacted me
personally to say how much they enjoyed the day and how well they were
treated. It was good to hear that Graham Lloyd was at the game following
a spell in hospital. To cap it all I understand it was a really good game
and our current players and management did the club proud with an
excellent performance. To the Committee, Directors and volunteers last
Saturday I thank you for once again representing the club with such
professionalism and pride.
Finally can I ask you all to visit our website and Facebook page to vote
for us in the AVIVA Community Fund. We are through to the final stages
where we are hoping to be awarded £10,000 to spend on equipment and
improving the other three pitches. The 1st team will not benefit directly
from improving the three pitches as they are hired out to youth and girls
teams but it will mean that we can continue to improve every element of
our facilities. Please also encourage family, friends and workmates to
vote for us.
Enjoy today’s game……………………………………………….
View from the Dugout
Good afternoon and welcome to The Paycare
Ground for this afternoon’s return to League
action against our visitors Wem Town.
Last week was a welcome change from
League action, A.I.E. Rugby were a team that
needed to be treated with the upmost respect.
Any team that wins their League three out of
the last four years deserves that also they
were the same as us unbeaten so far this
season, so one of us would lose their first
game of the season.
After seeing the weather forecast deteriorate
as Saturday came closer we realised conditions would be difficult and we
needed to change the way we played for at least half of the game. The wind
played an even larger part in the match than what we thought. We struggled to
settle early and couldn’t get out of our half for at least the first 10 minutes of the
game. After twenty minutes or so we adapted and started to get into the game
and should have gone in at half-time two or three goals up.
In the second half we knew our opponents would have the same problems we
had in the first half dealing windy conditions and we would have more time on
the ball, so it was important to be patient and not force the play, choose the
right options, exploiting the spaces when they arose. I thought we controlled the
second half well and to concede in the 92nd minute was disappointing as I felt it
flattered them because it was their only effort of note in the second half. The
score finished 2-1 but we could have scored four or five goals on another day. I
was really pleased with our overall performance and to be in the second-round
draw and stretch our unbeaten run to twelve games made it a good afternoons
work.
Today we face Wem Town who are in good form and in their last game they
beat the League leaders at that time Team Dudley 4-0. So it’s going to be
another tough afternoon, but with the Darlo faithful behind us we will be going
out to give it our all once again. The team are starting to grow in confidence
and togetherness within the group and it’s important we make The Paycare
Ground a real tough place for any team to come and play and It seems like we
are starting to show signs of that.
I have already mentioned the fantastic support we have received home and
away this season. To have an average crowd of 122 for our nine home games
played so far this season is unbelievable. The away games are incredible so
far, every game it looks like our supporter’s numbers are larger than the home
team. I often say you are our twelfth man which is true, I cannot think of another
club at our level and higher that has so much support. On behalf of the players,
management. THANK YOU.
Match Report
Birmingham County FA Vase
Darlaston Town (1874) 2 A.E.I Rugby 1
Saturday 21st October Kick Off 3 pm
Darlaston survived the elements and a late goal at The Paycare Ground to be in the
draw for the next round of the Birmingham County FA Vase.
Visitors A.E.I. Rugby the undefeated leaders of the Coventry Alliance League made the
long journey along the M6 to Darlaston Town (1874), looking to continue their faultless
start to the season. Manager Andy Parkes once again made changes, some forced. Ryan
McAllister returned to captain the side together with James Filkins, Martin Stanton and
Lucas Hough. The unfortunate players who were unavailable because of work
commitments, or injury were Tyrone Clarke-O’Connell, Ant Follows, Ricky Kelly and
Ashley Justin.
A wonderful crowd of 127
including our special guests for the
day, our Birmingham County FA
Vase winners in seasons 1990/91
and 1991/92 including manager
Jim McMorran turned up to a
windswept Paycare Ground with
quick heavy showers being quickly
blown through.
Darlaston kicked off playing as
usual left to right against the wind,
which caused problems. A.E.I. Rugby pressed Darlaston deep into their half ensuring
they were penned in for their half for the opening 10 minutes of the game. A.E.I. Rugby
fashioned three good chances Izzard and Irvine having headed efforts and Darlaston
keeper Morris was forced into early action with a save from Lee Vince who was causing
Darlaston problems early on with his deft left footed touches.
The home side soon learnt how to deal with the conditions prompted by Dave Richards
at the heart of the midfield. Also, Sam Giles starting to have his usual influence down
Darlaston’s right side supplying quality service to the forwards who failed to convert
three glaring chances all within six minutes from inside the six-yard box two for
Broadway and one for Hughes.
Back came A.E.I. Rugby who were now looking dangerous from set pieces collecting
second balls and pressing Darlaston back once again by playing football,
8
further shots from Josh
Goodwin, and Lee Vince
were blocked by the hard
working Darlaston defence
or missed the target. Daniel
O’Toole after 26 minutes
bought the best out of Arron
Morris after a stinging drive
from 20 yards saw Morris
need to tip the ball over.
Darlaston’s midfield were
starting to get to grips with
the conditions, playing the ball around with short passes creating an opening for
Scott Broadway on 30 minutes which was blocked by two sliding A.E.I. Rugby
defenders. After 32 minutes Darlaston broke the deadlock, a Kieran Payne pass to
Sam Giles, who once again produced a fine cross which Hayden Hughes converted
at the near post from 8 yards to put Darlaston in front.
Straight from the kick A.E.I. Rugby attacked O’Toole forcing Morris into another
diving save, and from the resulting corner Morris once again kept A.E.I. Rugby out
saving a header from Jim Smith. Giles was at it again after 35 minutes crafting
another cross, Lucas Hough missing from 3 yards when it looked easier to score.
Scott Broadway was booked on 40 min following a crunching tackle in midfield,
Luke Charlton soon followed him into the Referee’s book three minutes later.
A.E.I. Rugby fashioned five
chances, non of which were
taken in the last five minutes
of the half shots from
O’Connor, O’Toole and
Goodwin, but Matthew
Izzard was proving to be a
real problem from set pieces
two good headers, one
saved by Aaron Morris and
the left post save Darlaston
after the other effort.
After the half time interval, when every descended into the bar for a warm,
Manger Parkes must have produced another one of his inspirational team talks, we
have seen Darlaston come out at the beginning of the second half too many times
this season and inside 10 minutes either win the game or certainly get on level
terms, this game was no different.
9
Straight from the off inside 5 minutes Luke Charlton had a great effort charge
down, Hayden Hughes battered the right post from 25 yards, Darlaston forced two
corners one saw Scott Broadway add to his seasons tally a headed finish after a
short corner, Lucas Hough this time producing the quality service from out wide.
On 58 minutes a 35-yard cross from Sam Giles from the right was taken by the
wind forcing A.E.I. Rugby keeper Gavin Campbell into a fantastic save tipping the
ball over when a goal looked certain. Darlaston’s midfield were starting to
dominate, Dave Richards pulling the strings from the base, mopping up the stray
balls from A.E.I. Rugby’s defence, James Filkins was busy always looking for the
forward penetrating pass and Luke Charlton always available providing links to the
wide and forward players.
A.E.I. Rugby received two
bookings following tackles
Josh Goodwin on 59 mins
and substitute Atal Hinds
on 67 mins. A.E.I. Rugby
were finding it as difficult
as Darlaston did in the first
half, there was no way and
long balls would reach their
target, and because
Darlaston’s midfield was so
busy A.E.I. Rugby only relied on quick breaks and could not build a period of
sustained play or pressure.
Darlaston continued to create chances, Luke Charlton fashioned a great run
through the right side of A.E.I. Rugby’s defence, delivered a killer ball across the
face of A.E.I. Rugby’s goal, no Darlaston player could convert the opportunity.
Sam Giles was once again causing problems on the right forcing keeper Campbell
into action on three occasions. Even Dave Richards managed into get into act,
having his first shot of the season which dribbled into the keeper’s arms.
Its sounds like it was total domination by Darlaston, that was not the case, A.E.I.
Rugby were still dangerous another Matthew Izzard header on 63 mins was once
again saved by Morris.
As Darlaston were trying to see out the game in injury time, Jim Smith latched onto
a through ball clinically finishing a fine chance planting the ball in Morris bottom
left hand corner. Fortunately, 45 seconds after the restart the Referee blew for full
time saving the Darlaston fans from enduring another nail-biting finish.
The battle of the unbeaten two was finished, someone today was always going to
lose their unbeaten start to the season, once again it wasn't us.
Alfred William Bould
12/3/1940—15/10/2017
Everyone connected with Darlaston
Town (1874) were saddened to hear
of the loss of Alfred Bould after a
three year battle with cancer. On
behalf of everyone at the club we
would wish to send our condolences
to Alfred’s wife Kath and the rest of
the family.
Unfortunately I never had the
pleasure of meeting Alfred, but I
know most of the Darlaston
supporters know him and his family
well. Alfred has followed Darlaston for
many years, being a regular visitor to
the City Ground which he called “The
Theatre of Dreams”. Alfred introduced his son and grandson over
time to Darlaston Town
Alfred was unable to attend any
matches for sometime because of
his illness, but was kept informed
of our progress by both his
grandson Aaron Bould (Az) and
his great grandson Ryan, who
continues to attend games and
will be with us today together
with members of the family.
There will be a small ceremony
before the game, with a minutes
applause before the match kicks
off
A Look Around the
League
With several clubs involved in Birmingham County FA Vase action
three points with a 3-3 draw at Newport Town. Matt Tyler and Joey
Haines gave the visitors a two goal lead, Simon Jackson pulled a
goal back before Neil Brasenell put the home side back on level
terms. Aston Gunter put the visitors back in front before Jackson
netted his second goal to guarantee a share of the spoils.
Gornal Athletic beat St Martins 3-1 at Garden Walk whilst
Bromyard returned to winning action making it four wins from five
games with a 4-0 win at Allscott who have now lost four league
There were mixed results for West Midlands (Regional) League
teams in the First Round of the Birmingham County FA Vase.
Birmingham AFA League Premier Division side Birmingham
Medics pulled off a shock result with a 3-0 home win against Tipton
at home to Wrens Nest. Bustleholme progressed to the Second
Round beating Sutton United 3-1 whilst Old Wulfrunians had a
comfortable 4-0 home win against Crusaders. In the same
competition with the score 3-3 at full time, Team Dudley lost on
penalties to West Midlands (Regional) League Division 2
Wolverhampton United. Alex Pinches and Craig Edwards put the
Division One side two goals to the good before two United goals
put them on terms. Edwards put the students back in front before a
late United equaliser sent the game to penalties.
At the top of the Premier Division Ellesmere Rangers moved into
second spot closing the gap on leaders Wolverhampton Sporting
21
Community to two points with a 3-2 home win against Black
Country Rangers. Karl Bailey (2) and George Jackson on target for
The Meresiders. BewdleyTown moved up to fourth spot with a 3-1
home win against Dudley Sports whilst Wolverhampton Casuals
impressive recent form continues with their fifth consecutive win 4-
1 at home to Dudley Town a Liam Hughes hat trick took him to the
top of the score charts with 20 goals this season. Jay Holdcroft
was also on the scoresheet.
Bilston Town Community were in rampant mood beating bottom
club Wellington Amateurs 8-0. Near the foot of the table Stone OA
picked up a much needed three points away at Pegasus Juniors
winning by the odd goal in five. Jack Tomlinson opened the scoring
for the visitors. Cory Hyde equalised before a second goal from
Tomlinson put the visitors ahead before half time, Cameron
Sinclair netted a third before Kyle Panniers pulled a goal back to
set up a tense finish. In the only other league game Smethwick and
Malvern Town fought out a goalless draw.
With the Wolves Sporting Community FA Vase game falling foul to
the weather Wednesfield, Wellington and Shifnal flew the league
flag in the FA Vase. Midland Premier League Brocton beat
Wednesfield 4-1. Jack Edwards gave the home side an early lead
before former Darlaston striker Leon Taylor equalised for
Wednesfield. Brocton progressed to Round Two with 3 goals in the
final 15 minutes courtesy of Joe Hartshorne, Adam Wood and Ben
Douglass. Herefordshire based Westfields beat Shifnal Town 6-0.
