OUR
MISSION
The mission of
Georgia-Cumberland
Academy is to foster an
educational environment
of excellence where
students, faculty and staff
pursue a shared quest:
TO KNOW
Jesus as Savior
and Friend
TO LOVE
God and those He
brings into our lives
TO SERVE
the church and society
MULTIPLE GIFTS HELP
CONTINUE THE MISSION
GREG GERARD
PRINCIPAL
From the Principal
The pictures that were
produced by the architectural
firm we hired are beautiful. The
drawings of the new gymnasium
and cafeteria building were
striking to us when we first saw
them. When we have shown
these pictures to people it is not
uncommon that people would
react by saying something that
often included the word “wow!”
Now we can walk around and
inside the emerging structure. The
same word often escapes the lips of whoever is seeing our new facility for
the first time. It is an amazing process to see this new structure emerge from
the ground. And it is sometimes hard to believe that it is actually happening.
That same feeling of amazement at God’s incredible blessings extends
to the realization that many people have banded together to give the
money needed to bring these new facilities to GCA. I well remember the
first time I looked at the beautiful depictions of new gymnasium, cafeteria,
student center, classrooms and entrance. I loved the images – at the same
time I silently thought, “How in the world will we ever come up with the
money for all of that?” Well, the answer was far outside of this world. God
was moving on the hearts of many people to make it happen, and we have
been blessed beyond my wildest dreams!
We are still looking for the additional resources to fully pay the bills
on these projects. To our frustration, costs have gone up due to unforeseen
challenges and cost increases. But funding has continued to be committed to
help meet those increases. Through it all, God has poured down his blessings
to bring over $11.7 million to GCA for this project, so I have no doubt He
will close the final gap. God may even be calling you to be a part of His
amazing multiplication of gifts that is now taking place at GCA.
We praise God for what He has done and what He has promised to do
as He moves people to invest in this important ministry. What a privilege
to partner with Him to build for the future of GCA and participate in
Continuing the Mission to impact lives for eternity.
THE MULTIPLICITY OF ENDOWMENTS
From The GCA Board
Jesus taught us, as recorded by His disciple Matthew, in chapter 18, verses
3-5: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will
never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of
this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one
such child in my name welcomes me.”
Scripture makes it clear that our Lord values youth and urges us to become
like them, but do we really value children as He did?
Obviously Georgia-Cumberland Academy values youth as demonstrated
by its stated mission and vision, but recently the school showed an even clearer
commitment by partnering with the Georgia-Cumberland Conference to establish
an endowment fund that values youth with assistance for those in financial need.
Since its inception in 2012 the GCA Worthy Student Endowment has grown
from $5,000,000 to a balance of $5,268,027 while paying out $910,000 to worthy
students along the way! This fund is not only growing but benefiting children
while doing so.
To top it off, this resource came along just as other funds were going away.
Once again, as He typically does, God shows His true character by providing for those He values.
KEVIN KOSSICK
VICE PRESIDENT OF EDUCATION,
GEORGIA CUMBERLAND
Do you value children as He does? You can demonstrate what you value by providing financial assistance to GCA through
the endowment fund while having confidence that the Lord will lead a child in need to GCA who will be blessed by your gift
and the life changing blessing of a Christian education.
A LOOK BACK AT GCA FINANCES
From the Treasurer
There are many things that make up a strong school: staff, students, buildings,
academics, and programs. Supporting all of those is a solid financial base. I am
grateful to God to report to you that GCA continues to thrive and grow and has
a healthy financial picture. We have clean audits and operate in the black, having
set aside enough working capital to be able to function normally for at least five
months should we have an unexpected emergency. There is never a question
about GCA having to close its doors.
While there are many reasons for our healthy status, five immediately come
to mind:
1. Enrollment – for many years, our enrollment has met or exceeded what
we have budgeted.
2. Collections – we have a 99% collection rate, which can sometimes be a
challenging task, but it is vital to the health of our school.
3. Conference and union subsidies contribute significantly to our bottom
line. Many people think that our budget is based totally on the tuition
we receive. You may be interested to know that our tuition fees only pay
for 69% of what we need to accomplish our work.
4. Donations, large and small, positively impact our ability to provide tuition
assistance and program enrichment. In addition, donor contributions
have made it possible for us to expand current facilities and build new
ones.
Deborah Theus
GCA Treasurer
5. Realistic budget – we work hard to stay within the budget that has been established and approved by the school
finance committee and school board.
For the above reasons, and others that contribute to our positive financial status, we give all the glory to God. Thank
you for praying that God will continue to bless GCA.
My name is Kaiden Coker and I am a
sophomore at GCA. Through my time
at GCA I have become a better person
spiritually and academically. Without the
people who donated to keep me here at
Thank you so much for your generosity! You have made a major
impact on my life, especially my spiritual life. The amazing
opportunities GCA has for me here will help me thrive into the Godloving
person I want to be. I would not be at GCA if it was not God’s
plan. There were some factors that made my coming to GCA an iffy
situation for my parents. The decision was hard on them, but it was
clear that this was God’s plan when we were told that the amount we
were unable to pay had been paid by someone else. Thank you so
very much for helping me find my path to God and the right way of life.
I adore everything about GCA, my wonderful friends, the incredible
teachers and deans, and my amazing bosses. I also adore the clubs
and classes I am in. My non-academic classes I attend are praise
band and the newspaper, and soon I will be joining band as well. I am
super excited to get involved here. I have already done a sermon for
vespers, and done a chapel talk, so I am definitely getting involved
and being proactive. All of this is only happening because God
touched you to donate your money to give me the chance to
attend this school. I am so unbelievably appreciative and
touched that anyone would do this for me.
GIVING LEVELS
I would like to thank you personally for your generous
donations that enable students, such as myself, to attend
GCA. Because of your support I have been able to take full
advantage of the opportunities given here. It is by God’s grace
that I am currently involved in gymnastics, soccer, praise
band, and band while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. As I’m sure you
know, God provides many avenues of success for us, His
children, as we submit ourselves wholly to Him. 1 Peter 5:6,7
says “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of
God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care
upon him; for he careth for you” (KJV). In other words, this is
my key to success. I don’t worry about my financial issues or
my packed schedule because I know that God is in control of it
all. He takes care of His children. God knew that some would
need financial support, so He provided you with the means
to aid me and many others to attend GCA. By your faithful
actions, He is sure to bless you in return. Thank you for
allowing God to use you to provide for the needs of others.
Sincerely, Calvin Scott
Impossible! Ludicrous! Out of the question! When some people face completely improbable
situations they give up. Not Shirley Johnston.
In 1999 when the oldest of her four children was finishing the 8th grade and preparing for
academy there was no question of where Jessica wanted to go to school. But as a single
mother, struggling to make ends meet, Shirley didn’t know how it could ever happen. The longrange
plan from the beginning was for all four children to enroll at GCA. That summer Shirley
went to the Lord about her needs, packed Jessica up with everything she needed to move into
the dorm, and drove to Calhoun, Ga. Three years later, she enrolled Meagan. A year after that
she brought Eric. Four years later, her youngest son, Joshua, moved into the dormitory at GCA.
In 2011 when Josh graduated GCA, Shirley shared her incredulous testimony of how God faithfully
provided a way for her four children to complete their education. It was a miraculous mingling of
hard work on the part of Shirley and her children, a blessed blueberry patch that generated income,
generous donors whose combined gifts made up the difference, and a mom whose faith never waivered.
Talk about God’s miraculous multiplication methods!
Cancer took this champion of faith in 2014 and she now rests, awaiting God’s call on that great day when the
universe is witness to God’s final act of faithfulness and mercy. Her children, now grown, will someday share
stories of their mother’s answered prayers and God’s faithfulness with their own children.
At the beginning of 2013, the praise music program
organized a Friday evening concert at the outdoor
amphitheater. Hearts and voices were raised
in praise to God and the presence of His
Spirit was evident. Students, not
wanting that night to end, joined
hands around a campfire
and continued singing
together.
Following that spiritually high
evening, parents discovered that the
sound system used was crudely put
together with a great deal of effort
and ingenuity. It would be difficult to
have another outdoor concert using
the same equipment. During the
parents’ weekend brunch an appeal
was made. Donations from several
In March of 2017, Dylan Waters was part of the GCA Kenya mission trip group. This was made
possible by the large number of people who donated toward his trip. Dylan, and his grandmother,
sent letters to friends, family and church members. Dylan’s father is a pastor, and both sets
of Dylan’s grandparents are evangelists. Their letters reached many old friends. In total, 45
people contributed (between $10 and $750 each) and Dylan met his goal, making a significant
difference in his life.
Only a freshman at the time, it was a big jump for Dylan’s first mission trip experience to take
place in Africa. Asked why he wanted to go, Dylan says “I love to help people.” He not only
was able to help others, but his trip to Kenya influenced his own life. “I was able to see how
other people live, and learn what their world view is, and how they see God.”
Dylan comes from a mission-minded family. His great-grandfather was a missionary in China. Dylan’s
mother served in Yap, and her father served in the Phillipines. This strong model of service in his ancestry
has helped to feed Dylan’s passion to go into mission work as well. “I’ve thought about it as a career. I’ve
also thought about getting a medical degree so that I can go on short-term mission trips with schools like GCA
that need medical workers to be part of their team.”
Dylan just returned from the mission trip to Ft. Myers, FL, for hurricane relief, and plans to go to Peru in the spring.
Gifts that may seem small significantly impacted Dylan, and Dylan is impacting the world!
families were enough to purchase a brand new sound system appropriate for outdoor events.
Since then there have been many outdoor concerts that have blessed GCA students. Hearts
and lives have been moved to unknown measures. It is moments like those in the
atmosphere of a Friday night vespers, raising your voice in song up to the stars while
you hold on to a friend’s hand, that stay with you and live in your heart forever.
The donations of these families were not enormous -- except in impact. For
every life touched during these concerts there is a ripple effect. Only
in heaven will God reveal how he multiplied the gifts they gave.
“Thank you” is just not adequate for what you offer
students, like me, at GCA. It was always my dream
to come to school at GCA, but when it came time to
sign up for academy my family could not afford it.
Without you, I would not be here and I would not have
the relationship with God that I have now, because
of the leaders and atmosphere GCA provides. I am
indebted to you for that. I will do my best not to let
your generosity, which is something I could never
repay, be in vain. Words are cheap, so the best way I
can show my sincere gratefulness for you, is to make
the most of the opportunity you have given me. I pray
that God will bless you for your giving hearts, and for
all the blessings you bestow upon students like me!
Thank you so much to the supporters of the students
of GCA. Without your generosity and reflection of
Jesus many students wouldn’t be able to attend
the generous gifts from donors. Now, as my life at GCA
STAFF UPDATES
Pictured left to right: Jeanne Hartwell, Aaron Haldeman, and Jodi Steele
God is multiplying our staff, and we have added three new positions in the past year.
Aaron Haldeman joined us in January to assist Tom Sterndale in maintenance. Aaron maintains staff housing and
all heating, ventilation and air conditioning units. Aaron was born and raised in Mt. Vernon, Ohio where he also attended
academy. He came to GCA after twelve years of working at Cohutta Springs Conference Center. Aaron feels the Holy
Spirit guided his decision to join the GCA staff. “I have a desire to use the abilities God supplied me with to serve wherever
He needs me.” Aaron’s wife, Jennifer works for the Georgia-Cumberland Conference finance department. They have a
two-year old son, Wilson, who is the light of their life.
Jodi Steele came aboard in February as the marketing and recruiting assistant. Jodi has responsibilities in the Enrollment
Services Office, and does marketing for the school. She grew up in Collegedale, TN and graduated from Southern Adventist
University (SAU) with an undergraduate degree in public relations and master’s degree in school counseling. Prior to GCA,
Jodi worked in corporate public relations, as well as for the public school system. Jodi accepted this new position because
she loves the mission and spiritual atmosphere of GCA, and says she “finds working with, and mentoring, young people to
be extremely rewarding.” Jodi is married to David Steele, ’93, an architect in the Atlanta area.
Jeanne Hartwell is the newest addition to the GCA staff, and started in August. Jeanne has been hired to coordinate
the new GCA Scholars program. She will be crafting and facilitating a new program for GCA students with GPA’s of
3.7 or higher and/or whose test scores are in the top percentages for the nation. Her goal is to provide opportunities for
experiences that will enhance students’ attractiveness to colleges, information on how to find scholarships, and instruction on
how to be better prepared to enter college on scholastic, social and spiritual levels. She will also coordinate job shadowing
opportunities. Jeanne graduated from SAU with a degree in English. Her past work experience includes teaching college
composition, editor, and pastoring. Most recently she was the Associate Ministerial Director and Family Ministries Director
for the Pennsylvania Conference. Jeanne’s husband, Ray, works for the Georgia-Cumberland Conference as Director of
Trust Services and Stewardship. They have two children, Josh and Abby, and one granddaughter, Skye.
Marty Sutton, assistant principal, recently accepted the position of principal for Madison Campus Elementary School.
“GCA has been a major part of my life since 2010, and I will miss it and each of you. GCA is a major reason for my boys’
success, and I know that I am leaving [my daughter] Jensen in capable hands because GCA is providing the same for her.”
Marty’s transition occurred in October.
HURRICANE
VICTIMS
On Monday, September 18 a group of 39 students and
staff made their way to Florida – but for the first time in
GCA’s history, this Florida trip was not for fun at the beaches
or amusements parks. This group was headed to Ft. Myers to
assist those who suffered damage to their homes when Irma
hit their area as a category 3 hurricane on September 10.
They braved the heat, and tolerated the stench of sewage
which had flooded the area, to clear debris from yards, remove
drywall and to pull damaged contents from houses to the street.
They also helped distribute water, food and supplies.
Also a first since the year 2000, GCA will not be sending a
group to Appalachia for a mission trip. According to Chaplain
Josh Woods, “With the urgent needs in Florida and Texas so
great this year we felt that is where we should be, but we plan
to return to Appalachia in 2018.”
Throughout my years in and around the Georgia-
Cumberland Academy campus, it always held a special
place in my heart. Listening to my older brothers share
fond memories of their high school experience, I knew I
wanted to make some of my own. Sadly, my parents went
through a few financial struggles and were not sure if I
could attend. But God knew this was the school for me
and placed many people in my life to help my situation; a
majority of those people are the generous donors of the
worthy student program. Without their help, I would not
be the person I am today. GCA has grown me in every
way and allowed endless opportunities for my future. I
could not even begin to express my gratitude towards
this program and what it has done, not only for myself,
but for my family & friends. With the support I have
experienced through this program, I can confidently
say GCA is my home.
