He is the other co-founder of the Friends of the Thornwood Park Prairie Preserve. “He helped us buy redwood for the post and sawed it to the right size,” Crawford said. “My friend, Matt Stetter, was there with us to help. We learned so much from Mr. Gatto. We wore goggles when he was sawing. Then we took the sign and post over to the Thornwood Prairie and Preserve. We dug a hole three feet deep for the post. “He taught us about mixing fast-settling cement and then after the post was in and the cement hardened, we drilled holes into the post and screwed on the sign. It was awesome to see the sign in place.” Susan Gaines-Gatto added the National Wildlife Federation’s sign represents more than 200,000 people who are committed to protecting and nurturing wildlife in their own yards, schools, campuses, corporate properties, parks and more. “The sign encourages neighbors who walk the trail to become inspired to look up the website printed on the sign and pursue their own wildlife habitat around their house,” Gaines-Gatto said. “I am happy my Eagle Scout project is part of a national movement to create safe and sustainable havens for wildlife,” Crawford said. “It feels good to help make a difference.” M Y Y Y OPEN HOUSE ST. The interior design major traveled to the Venice Art Biennale Oct. 19-21. A group of 38 ISU students majoring in graphic design, interior design, and integrated studio arts developed an installation titled “Joyful Uncertainty” for the Biennale Sessions Workshop. The students created self-portraits using type and/or original imagery on larger-than-life-sized cutout silhouettes. School News is compiled by Editor Eric DeGrechie. Colonial Edens, 88, was responsible for the development of the Edens highway and in 1956 he constructed the Edens Plaza, bringing commercialization to the west side. Both Leary and Hussey-Arnston expressed their joy while working on this exhibit, primarily because of their need to interview and meet with residents who could answer questions, give personal accounts and fill in the gaps. They still seek resident input, hoping to learn more about the West side. Stories, photos and any historical memorabilia is of interest to the museum.
