Deciding to file for DIVORCE is hard...
Moments after he and
his classmates captured the
Winnetka Youth Organization’s
Battle of the Bands
competition on Oct. 27,
Aidan Celnar, guitar player
for band Odyssey, reveled
in the triumph.
After three hours with
four separate bands performing
30-minute sets,
Cellar and the rest of his
Odyssey bandmates (a mix
of Loyola Academy and
Glenbrook South students)
tuned their way to a win in
the inaugural battle held at
the Winnetka Community
House via a decision from
the three-judge panel.
“It’s crazy,” Celnar said.
“I’ve never done something
like this before. It was
an awesome opportunity to
get to play this.”
“This” Celnar referred to
was a fresh initiative from
the Winnetka Youth Organization.
Christina Gikas, recently
installed as the group’s executive
director, said the
WYO has always had teen
concerts during its nearly
five-decade history, and
she was looking to maintain
that custom with Battle
of the Bands.
“I really love bringing the
kids together because music
brings people and the kids
together,” Gikas said.
Battle of the Bands featured
students from Glenbrook
South, Loyola Academy
and New Trier spread
over four groups.
Odyssey featured five
members, and Alex Bentkowska,
a Loyola student,
garnered the most attention
with her singing. While she
normally performs opera
and classical, Bentkowska
is venturing out and trying
her voice at a form of rock.
Hindsight Effect, a
13-member band composed
of GBS students,
performed “hard jazz” with
its song “Can You Dig It,”
which is associated with
the Iron Man movies.
“It is really energizing
and really easy to get
into,” said Jack Quinones,
who plays guitar during the
song.
Hindsight Effect was
put together just for this
contest, but Quinones said
most of the members had
been playing together for
several years.
Not only was Hindsight
Effect distinctive for its
music, but also in how
the members dressed. The
saxophone players were in
Pokemon-related garb and
the trumpet players donned
animal suits.
“I don’t know where that
came from,” said Quinones,
who wore a tank top.
Also taking part was a
three-member New Trier
sophomore group, which
had given itself the name
Aerius and displayed its
“progressive metal” skills.
“It is made to be difficult
to groove to,” said Nolan
Kiser, one of the band’s
members.
Last up on stage was
the three-man Breakneck.
Lead singer Joey Sewall, a
GBS graduate, now attends
Oakton Community College.
After his half-hour performance,
Sewall was
showing signs of the effort,
as his shirt was soaked with
sweat.
He admitted the sets take
a lot of out of him, but loves
the release of emotion he
says comes with singing.
“It’s a cliché to say, but
it’s true,” Sewall said. “You
don’t really have anything
running through your head
ahead of time. Everything
that comes out is first instinct
and natural. It’s just
fun at the end of the day.”
