Girls Hockey
Glenbrook trying to find groove
NEIL MILBERT
Freelance Reporter
The 2016-17 season is a
hard act to follow but the
Glenbrook girls hockey
team is getting its act back
together.
Last season the team
made up mainly of girls
from Glenbrook South and
Glenbrook North was a
study in upward mobility,
going from the top of the
lower division the previous
year to the Scholastic
League championship and
then going on to take the
Blackhawk Cup which is
emblematic of the Illinois
High School championship.
Hovering just above
.500 when they met New
Trier Silver in the seventh
game this season
on Sunday, Nov. 5, at the
Northbrook Ice Arena.
Glenbrook put on a performance
in keeping with
their stature as defending
state champions by skating
to a compelling 7-0 victory
that improved their record
to 4-2-1.
“We have all those trophies
and it’s sinking in:
‘we actually did this,’”
said senior defenseman
Katie Thomas, recalling
last season’s accomplishments.
“This season we
started off a little slow. It
Glenbrook’s Lily Cataldo looks for an opening during her team’s game against New Trier Silver on Sunday, Nov. 5, in Northbrook. David
Karaus/22nd Century Media
took some time getting
used to each other. Now, I
think it’s going well.”
Fourteen players have
returned, including six All-
State selections — senior
forwards Hannah Jensen
and Nicole Knudson, junior
forwards Lily Cataldo
and Katerina Poulos, senior
defenseman Madison
Itagaki and junior defenseman
Madeline Dunham.
“Our leaders are stepping
up,” head coach
Steve Hamelin said. “We
lost a few key players but
we have new girls who
are freshmen who have
been playing really well of
late.”
The freshmen are Alicia
Kim, Addison Carr, Emma
Patterson and goaltender
Lauren Abraham.
Abraham got her second
shutout of the season
against Silver but it wasn’t
a difficult accomplishments
because her teammates
permitted the losers
only three shots on goal.
Claire Van Damme, the
New Trier forward who
made the All-State team
last season as a freshman,
played an aggressive game
but couldn’t find the net
because scoring chances
were few and far between.
“It was a good opportunity
to work on passing,
possession of the puck
and making the most of
our scoring opportunities,”
Cataldo said.
There were opportunities
galore: Glenbrook was
constantly on the attack in
the New Trier zone and
they pelted goalie Kate
Burnham with 33 shots.
“We have four lines and
they are fairly balanced,”
Hamelin pointed out.
Jensen, who goes to Regina,
led the attack with
two goals and one assist,
Knudson and Poulos each
contributed one goal and
one assist and Natalie Sorkin
collected three assists.
The other goals were
scored by Kim, Cataldo
and Nora Curtis.
football
From Page 30
the sophomore team (to
the varsity as Bullie also
did as a sophomore) is a
lot different. The signal
calling is different; there
are different plays. Trevor
is making the most of his
opportunity.”
Boyle, likewise, is impressed
with what he has
seen from Cabanban, who
made his varsity debut in
the first playoff game: “I
remember watching his
(sophomore team) highlights
and thinking: ‘Wow,
this kid can play.’’’
Boyle and Holecek also
pointed out Gilroy’s importance.
“He’s a big target and
we’ve been waiting to use
him (as an impact player)
for a long time,” Boyle
said.
Because of injuries to
interior linemen earlier
in the season, Gilroy was
shifted to offensive tackle
for a few games and he
went into the Hinsdale
Central game with only
three catches for 41 yards.
“Charlie is a great blocker
and a great teammate,”
Holecek pointed out. “Today
he made key third
down catches. He’s a Division
I (quality) tight end.”
Kelly, who has been
used mainly on special
teams, also got good reviews
from his coach for
the way he played against
Hinsdale Central. “As
coaches we knew Hugh
is going to have a great
senior year and it’s good
that he has gotten a chance
to show off his talents as a
junior,” Holecek said.
Victory No. 133 that
equaled the late Hoerster’s
school record came
in Holecek’s 12th season
as the Ramblers’ coach.
Hoerster, who coached
the Ramblers for 16 seasons,
led them to the state
championship in 1993,
and served as athletic director
before he died prior
to the 2003 season.
