Former John Fisher teacher, Mr. Miller, undetook a huge challenge when he left for Australia
in July 2017. His goal: Travel through 23 countries over a 4 month period to arrive
in Australia for the 1st Test of the Ashes series. Easy enough? The only condition was he
would not use a plane!!
He has already had his money stolen, been held hostage, undertaken a 27 hour coach
journey and slept in a room with 199 other people. You can see more on his travel diary
and website:
SUTTON REVIEW 2017 FEEDBACK
A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER, MR P E MCCULLAGH
It has been a fantastic first half term for us at The John Fisher School. Our new Year 7 and Year
12 students have settled in brilliantly and we have been most impressed with the impact of our
new staff members already. We were delighted to have won the Arsenal FC ‘School in the Community’
Award and the ‘National Rugby School of the Year’ Award at the end of last year. In this
academic year so far our Head of Modern Foreign Language and Specialist Leader in Education,
Mr Evans, won First Give’s ‘Teacher of the Year Award’ for 2017 and one of our student’s,
Mathew Kerwick, was a finalist for the Partners in Excellence (PiXL) ‘Simon Bell Special Award’ in
2017 for overcoming adversity and securing top grades having been in a road traffic accident.
Two of our Year 13 students, Aaron Conmee and Mark Whiteley, won the prestigious United
Nations Association (UNA) debating competition for Sutton, Croydon and Surrey schools. The
school has not won this competition since 1980. We were also extremely pleased that last year
one of our Yr. 13 students secured a place at the Royal College of Music and one student secured
a place at the University of Oxford. Six of our current Yr. 13 students have applied for
Oxbridge for next year.
We have started on the development of our Sixth Form building this half term, introduced a
new inclusion department and improvements are taking place to both our Main Hall and our
Chapel. Future projects include the opening of a kitchen garden and a remembrance garden as
part of our refurbishment programme.
Students have been involved in fundraising for local charities such as the South-East Cancer
Centre this half term and through the ‘Love in a Box’ appeal along with making a contribution to
national charities such as Macmillan and Blind Veterans UK. We have also been celebrating the
European Day of Languages and Black History month. Student leadership remains a priority for
us a school and in this half term we have been a training a group of students as ‘Digital leaders’.
We welcomed an external review from a Sutton
Review Team on October 2nd to October 3rd. The
team of five were invited in to assess the school’s
strengths and identify any areas for further development.
The focus of the review was to determine
the effectiveness of teaching and learning,
to evaluate the curriculum provision and to assess
the standard of ‘Oracy’ and ‘Student leadership’.
We await the final report but I would like to
share with you some of the comments made by
the Review team:
“The school has a strong ethos and culture with
relationships between staff, students and parents/carers
valued highly.”
“The pastoral system is excellent and parents
value teachers as role models.”
“Staff, students and parents do not feel bullying is
an issue within the school environment and any
issues are acted upon promptly with compassion
and efficiency.”
“Opportunities for student leadership are strong.”
“Parents/carers are pleased that the school is developing
their children with holistic and enjoyable
provision.”
“Punctuality and attendance are excellent.”
“The Headteacher and leaders at all levels are
passionate about improving outcomes for students.
They are aware of areas for development
and are taking steps to make improvements.”
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely
thank all of the students, staff members, parents/
carers and governors for their involvement in this
Review process.
Finally, it is with regret that I have to inform you
that at The John Fisher Association (JFA) AGM
meeting on Wednesday 6th September no parent/carer
was elected in the positions of Chair,
Vice Chair or Secretary. The John Fisher Association
has been extremely successful in the past
and annually raises close to £20,000 which has
helped fund new computers and equipment in
two of our classrooms, paid for our new school
website, paid for new noticeboards and helped
with the decoration of our new Inclusion department.
The former Chair, Rachel Rogan, did a tremendous
job while her son has been at The John
Fisher School and I would like to thank her for all
of her hard work.
If you would like to consider any of the vacant
positions or would like to discuss any of the
roles could you please contact Mr Andrew Dean
(adean10@suttonmail.org) or Mr Mike Simpson
(msimpson@suttonmail.org) at school. Current
school budgets are unsustainable and local
authority funding has also been reduced and we
therefore rely heavily on the money raised by The
John Fisher Association.
Thank you for your continued support and I hope
that your son enjoys his well-earned rest.
Kind Regards,
We are delighted that Rawlings Opticians have joined us as a sponsor. They are
sponsoring the Year 7 rugby shirts.
Rawlings have branches all over the Surrey and Hampshire area with local branches in
Purley, Caterham and Croydon.
Rawlings Opticians is an independent company founded in Croydon in 1895 and to
this day members of the Rawling family remain in the business. Richard Rawling is the
Managing Director based at our Purley branch.
Rawlings practices are all long established serving the communities of eight towns in
Hampshire and Surrey, where they have built a strong reputation for the quality of their
professional expertise and service.
Rawlings has the sme ethos and values as John Fisher. It has a long standing relationship
with Vision Aid overseas, a charity dedicated to helping people in the developing
world whose lives are blighted by poor eyesight and a lack of eye care services. They
do more than fundraise; over the years Rawling’s qualified syaff have provided valuable
practical help and professional guidance by working as volunteers in Africa.
In September 2017, optometrist and Director, Helen Short went to Sierra Leone on her
fifth assignment with VAO. She and a UK optical technician re-equipped a Vision Centre
at the Connaught Hospital in Freetown. Helen also mentored local optometric students
in examining children and the management of more complicated eye conditions. VAO
has established Vision Centres in five African countries so patients can get affordable
eye tests and spectacles provided by VAO trained local people.
MUSIC AND PSHE UPDATE
The first term is always really busy for our successful music department. With
clubs, choirs and orchestras running every lunchtime, there is an opportunity for
every student to get involved, no matter their experience or level.
The music department has continued
to develop and grow this year . We
are offering all students the chance to
undertake music lessons in a variety
of instruments, including the Saxophone,
Drums and Violin. The choir
continues to improve and we are
now working very hard on our festive
pieces ready for the variety of concerts
and community performances
we have in November and December.
With 13 events or concerts in the
next 7 weeks, we are very busy!! This
includes singing at local Primary and
special needs schools, Tesco in Purley
and the St. Nicholas centre, Sutton.
We have had two Epilogues so far
this term and we have been recording
these with the view to share them
in the future with those who wish to
download. Our next Epilogue is being
held at St. Marks (around the corner)
on Thursday 23rd November at 4pm.
The staff choir practice every thursday
morning and have attracted
some new talent...you will need to
come and see them to find out who!
We look forward to seeing you at one
of our events.
Mrs. Harrington-Booth.
(Head of Music)
On Saturday 7th September, all Year 7 students
were invited to trial a whole range of musical instruments
after their rugby training session. As
you can see, many of our students took up the
opportunity and are now taking lessons in a variety
of instruments.
This event saw over 120 Year 7 parents and carers
attend a PSHE morning to help improve the
transition of their son to John Fisher. The teachers
ran sessions on mental health, literacy and
numeracy, and had Year 8 parents giving advice.
JFS: NATIONAL RUGBY
SCHOOL OF THE YEAR 2017
In August we were invited to Twickenham stadium for the National
Rugby Awards 2017. Shortlisted for the ‘School of the Year’
award, we arrived with very little expectation that we would win.
However....
A truly remarkable achievement. Having been shortlisted with
Brighton College, Rugby School and Cranleigh, we didnt really
believe we would win this national award. Our story was simple;
a truly unique state school which can field up to 23 teams
every saturday, playing against the very best school’s in the
country. The judges read our application and judged us the
winners based on our ‘brilliant example for other schools to
follow’. Mr. Street (Head of Rugby) said, “ I accept this award
on behalf of all the staff, students and Old Boys of the school. I
have received this award but there are so many who have earnt
it. This award recognises how unique we are at Fisher and highlights
the dedication so many staff have put in over the years.
Well done to all who have contributed to this.”
INTRODUCING A NEW PARTNER OF THE SCHOOL:
KLICKSMART PHOTOGRAPHY
CHARITY COMES FIRST
Page-13
In the first seven weeks of term, The John Fisher School has already
raised over £3,000 with many local charities benefitting.
As we
approach Christmas, there will be more work to be done to
support the frail, vulnerable and homeless at this time. Please
do support our initiatives where possible.
Up next: British Legion Poppy appeal
Next to the Sports Hall and
Music Centre we now have
a remembrance garden.
Students, staff and alumni
donated £1 to plant a
Daffodil on behalf of friends
and family who have battled
cancer. This raised
over £250.
We held a Cake sale on our
INSET day in September to
help raise money for Macmillan
cancer care. The staff
brought in a range of baked
goodies and helped raise
over £230 for this great
cause.
We continue to support charities
through our First Give,
House Charity and regular donations.
In November we will be
collecting for the British Legion
by selling Poppies.
The South East Cancer
centre operates in Purley,
supporting the local people
with Cancer. A small charity
it may be, but it provides
services for those who really
need it and desperately
needs support to continue
this. We were able to give
£500 from our mufti day.
We have been contributing to
Love in a Box for 8 years and
we continue to play a big part
in making Christmas a little bit
better for children in orphanages
all over Europe. This year
we were able to help St. Pauls
Church send 213 boxes with
our boxes, unwanted goods
and £500 from the mufti day.
Year 8 are starting a six week
project which will see them
all design and draw the next
generation ‘Dream Car’. The
competition is run by Toyota
UK and challenges the students
to come up with their
very own design of how cars
can engage with the environment
and be a vehicle for
change. The students will
enter the UK compeition to
begin with, but the competition
is run all over the world
and we hope our very best
students will get a chance to
go up against the very best
from around the globe.
Head of Art Mr. McKenzie
said, “ This is a great competition
and one which
really suits us as a school.
Working with our commercial
partner, Toyota,
we are able to inspire the
students with real life
projects which link to local
organisations.
Students in Years 9 and
10 are also being allowed
to enter so watch this
winner is at JFS!
Mr. McKenzie
(Head of Art)
The Sutton & Croydon Branch of the United Nations Association has been running this competition
since 1977. More than 20 secondary schools (a mix of state, public and private), from Croydon, Sutton
and Surrey, compete annually in the competition . The local UNA Branch publish a list of Topics
for debate and the Draw. The “home” team selects the topic and the away team decides whether to
propose or oppose. The Branch provides three independent judges.
The schools now compete on a knockout basis, seeded into three Rounds, semi finals and now the
Final. In the earlier rounds school teams of two speakers each speak for up to 8 minutes and in the
semis and the final they are asked to each speak for up to 10 minutes. In the Final each team of
two speakers each speak for 10 minutes, and then the Chair ( Stephen Harrow) opened to the floor
the opportunity to ask questions of both teams after which each team delivered a 5 minute summary.
The Final Debate was against Croydon High School and our debaters were Aaron Conmee & Mark
Whiteley. They proposed the motion: “This House believes the future of British Youth is compromised
by Brexit”
The three judges (Pat Cook, Les Kemp & Rodney Towner) were really impressed by the standard
of the debate and awarded the winning shield, the DIGBY WEIGHTMANN SHIELD, to our team. In
addition to this Mark Whiteley also won the award for the best individual speaker and received the
MAYORAL TROPHY. The trophies were presented to Aaron and Mark by the Past Mayor of Croydon
Councillor Wayne Trakas-Lawlor.
CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
Page-21
A message from the Chair of Governors, Mr E Samuels
On behalf of the Governing Body, I wanted to congratulate the students and staff at school
on such a positive first half term. The academic, debating and sporting awards reflect all of
the hard work which is currently being shown at The John Fisher School. I was delighted to
find out the Sutton Review team’s reflections on the standard of governance at the school
when they visited at the beginning of October. The team commented in their report that
“Governors have a strong understanding of their role within the school and the moral purpose
of the school as and within the Catholic community.”
We should feel very proud that we have such a successful Catholic school in our local catholic
community and truly appreciate how our students benefit from the thoughtfulness that
our Catholic teaching and distinctiveness encourages. Our success does not make us complacent
however and we want to continue to work on being the best that we can be. I would
stress to parents/carers the importance of being part of our John Fisher School Association
and would encourage you to attend the events which will hopefully take place this year. Let’s
hope we can find some volunteers to take up the leadership roles in this successful Parent
Teacher Association as we move the school further forward together.
Yours sincerely,
FIRST GIVE
Entering our third year with Just Give, we have already seen over £3,000 donated to local charities
on our behalf, as well as raised the profile of many smaller charities which rely on local
support. We have the perfect person at the helm for this, our very own ‘Teacher of the Year 2017’,
Mr. Evans.
“
An amazing experience, I cant believe we
were lucky enough to go up to Cit Hall and
experience the final event. It was great to
see so many people from around the UK,
sharing their experiences and success.
Even better, Mr. Evans won!!!
”
Page-23
The ‘First Give’ annual awards event took place at London’s iconic City Hall on Monday 2nd October.
As a school, we were one of a handful of schools who piloted the award 2 years ago and since its
introduction, the First Give award has become ever present within the Year 9 PSHE programme at
John Fisher.
Due to selfless dedication and efforts to raise awareness of social issues in our communities, the
winning form from Year 10 (Newman)were invited to the celebration event to compete in the ‘Soapbox
challenge’. They performed extremely well once again and we wait with excitement the results
of the challenge.
Fortunately, there was some success on the night for John Fisher when Mr Evans won ‘Teacher Of
The Year 2017’, beating off competition from teacher’s at 280 other schools around the UK.
2017
LOVE IN A BOX 2017
Dear Mr Dean,
Please pass on my thanks to everyone concerned with “Love in a Box.”
We completed 213 boxes on Sunday, and this was followed by another
8 boxes brought to the church by members of Mencap Sutton. It was a
real delight to see the students of John Fisher come to help pack the boxes
on a Sunday on their half term. Please do pass on my thanks to them
all. The contributions from John Fisher parents, staff and students mean
that we can continue to support those less fortunate than ourselves at
Christmas.
The boxes are due to be collected sometime today though I don’t know
their final destination. They will definitely be with the children by Christmas.
Thanks again for all the hard work for these children.
Yours sincerely,
Pam Oubridge.
(On behalf of Mustard Seed Chairy: Love in a Box)
We will be holding our annual ‘Speed Careers’ event on Thursday 16th November from 1.00pm-
3.30pm. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the variety of careers and opportunities
available to our students when they leave the School. If you can join us from 1.00pm, lunch will
be provided for all guests.
The event is split into two parts:
Lunch will be served from 1.00pm-1.30pm for all guests.
Part 1: 1.45pm-2.15pm
We are looking for guests to offer a short talk on their career, experience and journey to a group
of students who will select one talk to attend. We would love to offer a wide range of talks so that
students can pick one that is really relevant to what they are looking to undertake. This will be in
a classroom and a PC/Projector would be available. Due to space, we anticipate only being able to
accommodate 10 talks at once so please do let us know if you would be willing to do this.
Part 2: 2.15pm-3.15pm
The entire year group will join you in the sports hall for a speed dating style event. Guests will
be spread around the hall at a small table, with small groups of students spending a few minutes
hearing what you do ad how you got there. You will have room for pop up banners, laptops
(please make sure these are charged) and other props We will spread out the various industries
and sectors so that students do not hear from the same career more than once. We purposely mix
up the order of the guests and make the students follow a set order so that they talk to people in
all areas rather than just a few. We believe that this helps widen their awareness and makes them
think about careers they may not have considered. The small groups only spend a few minutes
with you before moving on to the next guest. This will continue for around 45 minutes before time
is given to students to walk around the hall and chat to any guests they have missed or would like
more information from.
If you, or your business, can spare some time to help Inspire the next generation
then please email us directly, outlining whether you can participate in Part 1, Part 2
or both.
$120
GOLD STANDARD STUDENT WELFARE
JOHN FISHER JOINS A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS IN
SUBSCRIBING TO ‘RETURN2PLAY’. THIS SERVICE
HELPS SUPPORT THE SCHOOL, STUDENT AND
PARENTS WHEN STUDENTS ARE RETURNING TO
PLAYING SPORT AFTER CONCUSSION.
As a school we are committed to providing
the best posisble care for our
students. With active youngsters comes
a risk of injury and we are delighted to
have linked up with ‘Return2Play’ to provide
a more robust monitoring system
which communicates to parents, staff
and external clubs.
Coaches are now able to complete an
injury form from their phone using an
App. This will then start the ‘Return2Play’
procedure which will require students to
undertake the required checks.
The School is also working with Bath University
in their national project focussing on rugby
injuries. In return for injury data we receive free
video coverage of some of our games, as well as
the analysis that goes alongside it.
With rugby being played by over 550 students
at John Fisher, we belive we are giving students
the best care and support avaliable and look
forward to working with ‘Return2Play’ and Bath
University for years to come.
The system is excellent for all injuries
but especially for concussion. Students
will need to follow the RFU guidelines
which includes seeing a GP. To make
this easier, parents and carers will be
able to book online virtual appointments
with registered GP’s who can assess the
students and give advice. This removes
the need for taking time off work as they
can be between 6pm-8pm throghout the
week.
Thisn is an additional service costing £25
for a year.
“
Using the Return 2 Play system
will allow us to record, track and
monitor all of our students who
get injured through sport and
other activities.
”
