Damco launches
digital freight forwarder

Maersk-owned global freight forwarding and logistics provider
Damco has unveiled its in-house ‘digital freight forwarder’.
The solution enables customers to book, manage and monitor
shipments online at the click of a button, focusing on four key
features: Instant quotation; Integrated document handling;
Milestone transparency; and Proactive exception management.
Initially focused on managing ocean shipments within the China to
UK trade lane, Damco said the company would grow by adding more
shipping routes and products over the coming months.
Although the company was initially only taking on full container load
business, arguably the most easily standardised part of freight
forwarding, it would, in due course, take on the more complex
challenges of freight forwarding, such as less-than-container load
(LCL) and air freight. It was expected to initially serve smaller and
more transactional customers that larger freight forwarders are
sometimes less able to easily service, before scaling up to larger
accounts.

Van Moer Logistics Terminal Vilvoorde
Waste transport over water receives a permanent character
Waterwegen en Zeekanaal have finalised the agreement between the
intercommunals Haviland, Ecowerf and partner Indaver to transport waste
over water.
After a pilot project, the operations were optimized in cooperation with all parties
involved, which results in a new partnership. The waste is transported by barge from the
container terminal at Vilvoorde, Brussels to the waste recycling plant of Indaver at Doel,
Antwerp. Special open-top containers were designed to increase the optimization of the
logistic flows.
Congestion
According the agreement, 60.000 tonnes of waste would be transported over water.
Which is an equivalent of about 2.400 single trips with trucks that would no longer be
used on the road, creating a positive vibe for the ever present congestion issue. 6 -12
containers of the intercommunal Haviland are transported on a regular base, where they
are processed in the incinerator of Indaver at Doel. The heat that is released by this
process is used to generate electrical power for the surrounding facilities. The waste of
the intercommunual Ecowerf will be transported over water starting November.
