MESSAGE
FROM THE CEO
participants – from right around this huge and virtually
untapped region. Ao Po Grand Marina is perfectly
situated for an event of this calibre, with immediate
access to Phang Nga Bay allowing exhibitors to take
prospective customers out for a sea trial, and affording
newcomers to boating the opportunity to step on
board for a cruise - on small boats or superyachts alike
- around some of the Bay’s spectacular islands. There’s
no better way to get people interested in boating than
to take them afloat.
The whole world mourned the sad passing of His
Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej on October
13th last year. Rarely has a Monarch, or any Head of
State in history touched the hearts of so many people
in so many countries around the globe. Thus it was in
a spirit of celebration of his kindness, his generosity,
his popularity and his love of sailing that the second
edition of the Thailand Yacht Show (TYS) went ahead
as planned in December 2016, and was dedicated to the
memory of Thailand’s beloved King. The Government
felt it was important to show the world that, even in
such circumstances, it was Business as Usual in the
Kingdom.
This is Thailand’s own Yacht Show, and the support we
have received as official organisers on behalf of the
Government has been absolutely magnificent; as a
result, TYS has, in only its first year, become established
as an occasion of truly international standing. The
proactive involvement of the Ministry of Tourism &
Sports, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Ministry
of Transport, the Marine Department, the Phuket
Provincial Office, our venue hosts Ao Po Grand Marina,
and of course the personal interest of Deputy Prime
Minister General Thanasak Patimaprakorn - all of whom
demonstrably want to see the yachting and boating
industries here thrive and prosper - has ensured that
Thailand continues to develop its reputation and status
as the premier hub of yachting and boating in Asia.
In so many ways, the Thailand Yacht Show can develop
into a world-class, all-embracing sales and marketing
platform for the whole of the Asia Pacific marine leisure
industry. This Show in this venue has all it takes to bring
together the dealers, the brokers, the charterers, and of
course, the visitors – charterers, buyers, and sporting
The second edition of TYS 2016 provided a platform
for some of the biggest and best yachting and boating
brands in the world, from superyachts available for
charter to family runabouts ready to cruise away to
the nearest beach. By definition, the superyachts are
the most visible elements of the Show, but it’s not just
about the big boats. TYS proved itself once again to
be the perfect marketing platform for all things that
float and are fun, and a showcase par excellence for
the recreational boating industry of Thailand.
We had boats, and we had luxury brands. We had
four days of exciting activities on our ‘Demonstration
Platform’, and a great many of the demos were
interactive, too. It’s all part of the inclusiveness of
the show, and fitted in perfectly with our intention
to present ‘something for everyone’ at the event. The
social scene was second to none, with lavish parties on
board boats, and a constant stream of entertainment
along the docks.
So we like to think that His Late Majesty King
Bhumiphol Adulyadej, Thailand’s beloved King, would
have approved. He was a passionate sailor, and we were
privileged to have on display a number of His Majesty’s
own boats, along with a remarkable exhibition of some
of his other nautical achievements.
We are already forging ahead with our preparations
for the Thailand Yacht Show 2018, which is starting to
attract more and more marine lifestyle-seeking folk
from China and all around the region, and look forward
to welcoming our guests, sponsors and exhibitors back
to Ao Po Grand Marina in February 2018.
A MESSAGE FROM
THE MINISTER
OF TOURISM AND
SPORTS
visitors afloat, we offer beautiful waters,
magnificent beaches, and jewel-like islands.
On shore, Thailand has some of the best hotels,
spas, health resorts and wellness centres in
the world, as well as a culture of friendliness
and the famous Thai welcome that is already
so well-known around the world.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is
delighted to have been part of Thailand’s
new Number One boating event – the Thailand
Yacht Show. Building on the success of the
inaugural Show in February 2016, this occasion
demonstrated that the combination of a
spectacular range of products and services
for luxury travellers – presented in a fabulous
setting, and organised by the best professionals
in the marine leisure industry – shows what
Thailand truly has to offer.
The Thailand Yacht Show is a very important
and integral part of the Government policy
aimed at promoting the Kingdom as a perfect
destination, both on and off the water. For
Adding all these together, and actively seeking
to streamline regulations for marine visitors,
we believe that the stimulus of the Thailand
Yacht Show will help promote high-end
tourism and further develop local economies
for the benefit of the businesses and people
of Thailand.
The Thailand Yacht Show is a window that the
world can look through to view our spectacular
offering as a world-class destination, and it
is a crucially important element in our vision
of making Thailand the marine hub of Asia.
Thailand is perfectly positioned to welcome
superyachts arriving in Asia from Europe,
and this Show will help build on the strengths
we already have in the leisure marine sector,
both as a destination in its own right and as a
service centre for the wider, regional, marine
industry.
Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul
MINISTER OF TOURISM AND SPORTS
SHOW
OVERVIEW
The Show enjoyed support from the Ministry
of Tourism & Sports, the Tourism Authority
of Thailand, the Ministry of Transport, and
the Marine Department. An expanded lineup
of 75 brands on display, and 55 boats on
show (including 18 superyachts) meant that
the second TYS was, indeed, even bigger and
better than the inaugural edition.
The Thailand Yacht Show has definitely
‘arrived’ and is firmly established as one of
Asia’s premier big boat shows. Hosted at Ao
Po Grand Marina on the east coast of Phuket,
and within mere minutes’ cruising distance of
the stunning Phang Nga Bay, TYS proved once
again that a well-organised show backed by
the full support of the Thai Government is the
way to promote and develop the marine leisure
industry in Thailand.
There was something for everyone at the
Thailand Yacht Show: Big boats, small boats,
charter boats, monohulls, catamarans, sailing
boats, party boats, and super-fast power
boats. There were bars and pop-up food
outlets along the docks, exciting interactive
demonstrations of water toys - “Come on in,
have a try!” – and an air-conditioned pavilion
hosting displays from a wide-range of exhibits
from yachting and lifestyle brands, including
equipment manufacturers and suppliers, resort
developments, a yacht crew training academy
and an on-line berth-booking system.
The intention of the Thailand Yacht Show is to
encourage people to come along and take a
look, and of course, then they fall in love with
boating!
SOCIAL
EVENTS
Boating can be as social as you want it to
be. A getaway cruise to enjoy a little peace
and quiet is one thing, but a glamorous onboard
party is good too!
The second edition of the Thailand Yacht
Show certainly did not lack for upmarket
occasions. The scene was positively electric,
from the Opening Party at d’Deck sponsored
by Sevenstar Yacht Transport, to the Closing
Extravaganza on board the appropriatelynamed
HYPE, there was non-stop fun for four
days.
Several times every day the hugely-popular
Demo Platform by Java Yachting presented
displays of dinghy sailing, kayaking, dragon
boating and stand up paddle boarding. Show
visitors were actively encouraged to take
part, with assistance provided by qualified
instructors. For the extra-intrepid, there
were FlyBoard demonstrations too – but
just watching was exciting enough for most
people!
On board the 90m Lauren L, the biggest
yacht in the Show, Titan Brokers hosted an
extravagant party for an extraordinary guest
list, and the fun just never stopped on Ocean
Emerald, right up to the closing night’s fashion
show just before the yacht horns marked
6
POST SHOW REPORT • www.thailandyachtshow.com

the end of the show in traditional fashion.
International brokerage house Burgess Yachts
treated VIPs to a soirée on board the classically
elegant Northern Sun. Even a torrential
downpour couldn’t dampen the party spirit at
a huge and elegant reception hosted by the
show’s biggest exhibitor, Lee Marine, at their
Ao Po Grand Marina premises.
It wasn’t all invitation-only events: throughout
the four days of the show a mouth-watering
collection of pop-up bars and restaurants
kept the crowds fed and watered all along
the docks. Brokers’ and dealers’ hospitality
suites on the pontoon provided shade and
refreshments for show visitors taking a look
at the boats on display, and the new d’Deck
Bar at the marina entrance proved to be a
convenient and popular meeting spot
The HYPE party catamaran took off every
morning for ticketed cruises up into Phang
Nga Bay (but was always back in time for the
evening parties!) and Ocean Emerald hosted
press and media representatives the ultimate
morning, pre-Show cruise.
If you really couldn’t keep your feet on the
ground, TYS offered VIP guests helicopter
flights for a spectacular aerial tour of Phuket,
including Ao Po Grand Marina itself.

significantly increasing our display space
for TYS 2018.”
“We see TYS becoming the major
large yacht show in the region, and
EXHIBITORS
Good boat shows attract quality exhibitors,
and they in turn attract visitors – it’s a
virtuous circle. The calibre of both in-water and
in-hall exhibitors at the Thailand Yacht Show
was a veritable Who’s Who of boating in South
East Asia.
The superyacht charter division was represented
by Lauren L (90m, the largest yacht ever
on display in Asia, presented by Titan Fleet
brokers), Paraffin (Feadship, 60m, presented by
Lee Marine), Northern Sun (51m, Burgess) and
Ocean Emerald, a 41m Norman Foster-design,
presented by her owner, who is already making
a mark on the charter business in Thailand.
The biggest exhibitor in the Show by numbers
of boats (15) was Lee Marine – mere metres
from their head office in the Ao Po Grand
Marina commercial complex. Boat Lagoon
Yachting presented Princess motoryachts and
Jeanneau brand sailing boats. Simpson Marine
is ubiquitous in Asia, including at the Thailand
Yacht Show, displaying a Monte Carlo Yachts 70
as well as Lagoon catamarans and a Beneteau
sailing yacht. Other exhibitors included Hong
Seh Marine, Leopard Catamarans, Multihill
Solutions, Northrop & Johnson, the HYPE On-
Water hospitality lounge, and the beautiful,
classic, Illuzion which seemed to have a party
going all day every day!
Indoors, significant exhibitors included
LuxBerths, who launched their new online berth
booking platform during the Show, the Galileo
Maritime Academy, Mont Azure property,
Harcourt Yachting Crew Management, the
almost-open Port Takola Yacht Marina, Kenkoon,
Italthai Marine Group, Azimut Yachts Thailand.
Show sponsor, Sunbrella always on a mission to
keep everyone shaded and cool had a presence
both in the Pavilion and on the docks with a
range of colourful pinwheels.
promotion of TYS in English, Thai and Chinese.
A wide-ranging online and social media
campaign also proved to be highly effective in
raising interest and attracting visitors.
Visitor promotions and strategic partnerships
within the Show’s network, as well as increased
reach thanks to our relationship with the
Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Ministry
of Tourism & Sports network, provided valuable
access to airport advertising, billboard signage
throughout Phuket, in addition to our own onisland
signage campaign too.
Following in the footsteps of the immensely
successful first Thailand Yacht Show, the
second edition was extensively publicised
through a comprehensive mix of marketing
methods, both in print and electronically. A
new and visually striking brand campaign was
rolled-out in the run-up to the Show, and it
certainly helped us to stand-out. Advertising
and editorial coverage in premier boating
publications and luxury lifestyle titles around
the region led to extensive exposure and
The Show’s broadcast reach was equally
impressive, with national and international
television and radio interviews providing
coverage that was essential in garnering the
attendance of HNWI and UNHWI visitors. In
addition, a series of targeted e-newsletters
and news articles on the Show’s website, and
across its social media platforms, were all
employed to keep TYS visible both before and
during the event, and maintain a steady flow
of fresh information in real time to the largest
possible target audience.
THAILAND
YACHTING FORUM
of presentations from members of the Thai
Marine Business Association, starting with
an overview of the Andaman Sea region, its
highlights and strengths in the international
marketplace. This was followed by an in-depth
look at the Gulf of Thailand, in particular it’s
untapped potential as a cruising destination
and the expected increase in the number of
visiting yachts following recent changes by the
Customs Department.
The second edition of the Thailand Yachting
Forum provided a unique opportunity for
public and private sector co-operation, and a
platform for industry stakeholders to discuss
and share ideas of how to make Thailand the
yachting hub of ASEAN.
Held at the Phuket Boat Lagoon on 14
December 2016, the first half of the Forum saw
presentations from a number of government
departments and authorities, with the focus
primarily on developing Thailand’s superyacht
industry. The Marine Department updated on
recent and ongoing activities, specifically the
planned realignment of regulations to entice
more visiting superyachts to Thailand’s waters.
The second half of the Forum was dominated
by the private sector and included a number
Infrastructure is key to the success of any
marine destination, and the Forum looked
at the clear link between Phuket’s evolution
and marine infrastructure development, in
particular marina berths, and how this has
directly led to growth in the number of visiting
yachts to the area over the last 10 years.
With the drive by central government to turn
Thailand into a superyacht hub, Gold Coast
City Marina and Shipyard provided a timely
case study on Australia, highlighting its success
as a superyacht destination, and highlighting
important take-aways for Phuket and Thailand.
Delegates concurred that the Forum stimulated
discussion, proved to be an excellent
opportunity to develop contacts and further
strengthen business relationships, and that it is
essential tool to help guide Thailand’s marine
industry development for the future.
The third Thailand Yachting Forum will take
place 22 February, 2018, followed by the
Thailand Yacht Show (22 – 25 February, 2018).
